The neotropical biting midges related to Culicoides paraensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Culicoides paraensis (Goeldi), a common and widespread American bloodsucking midge that has been incriminated in the transmission of Mansonellosis and Oropouche Fever of humans in South America, is redescribed and figured. All published records are listed and new distribution is based on examination of extensive collections from throughout its range. Three closely related species of the subgenus Haematomyidium that have been confused with C. paraensis are briefly redescribed and figured, and a key is presented for their identification.

Two new biting midges from Pará, Brazil (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Two new species of Culicoides Latreille of the subgenus Haematomyidium Goeldi are described and illustrated based on female specimens from Pará, Brazil. The new species are compared with their similar congeners.

A new Culicoides of the stigmalis group (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Notes are presented on the three known Neotropical species of the Culicoides stigmalis group of boodsucking midges: alvarezi Ortiz, fluviatilis (Lutz), stigmalis Wirth, and on deanei n.sp., which is described from the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A diagnosis is given for the group, as well as a key for identification and comparative phtographs of the female wings.

Two new Culicoides of the paraensis species group (Diptera:Ceratopogonidae) from the Amazonian region of Peru

Two new species of the Culicoides paraensis species group, C. diversus Felippe-Bauer and C. peruvianus Felippe-Bauer, are described and illustrated based on female specimens from Amazonian region of Peru. A systematic key, table with numerical characters of females, and distribution of species of the C. paraensis group are given.

A new Culicoides (Diptera:Ceratopogonidae) of the subgenus Diphaomyia from Peru

A new species of Culicoides of the subgenus Diphaomyia, Culicoides jurbergi Felippe-Bauer, is described and illustrated based on female specimens collected biting man and with light traps in Peruvian Amazonia. The species is compared with its similar congener mirsae Ortiz.

Description of Culicoides pseudoheliconiae sp.n. from Peruvian Amazon and revalidation of Culicoides contubernalis Ortiz & Leon (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

A new species of the Culicoides hylas species group, Culicoides pseudoheliconiae Felippe-Bauer is described and illustrated based on female specimens from Peruvian Amazon, and Culicoides contubernalis Ortiz & Leon from Ecuador is resurrected and redescribed as a valid species. A systematic key, table with numerical characters of females of species of the Culicoides hylas group are given.

Culicoides baniwa sp.nov. from the Brazilian Amazon Region with a synopsis of the hylas species group (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

A new species of the Culicoides (Hoffmania) hylas species group, Culicoides baniwa Felippe-Bauer is described and illustrated based on a female specimen from the state of Amazonas, Brazil. A systematic key, wing photographs, diagramme of the legs pattern, table with numerical characters of females and a synopsis of the 11 species of the C. hylas group are presented. This paper further presents a new record of Culicoides pseudoheliconiae Felippe-Bauer out of the previously defined geographic distribution of the hylas species group, in the province of Misiones, Argentina.

A new Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) of the Reticulatus species group from Brazilian Amazon Region

A new species of the Culicoides reticulatus species group, Culicoides kuripako Felippe-Bauer, is described and illustrated based on females and male specimens from the states of Amazonas and Pará, Brazil. The new species is compared with its similar sympatric congener, Culicoides paucienfuscatus Barbosa.

Two new neotropical species of predaceous midges of the tribe sphaeromiini (Diptera: ceratopogonidae)

Two new Neotropical species of the tribe Sphaeromiini are described and illustrated, Mallochohelea limitrofe from Argentina and Uruguay, and Neobezzia wirthi from Argentina. The first species is only known from the female sex, being the second one described from both, female and male specimens.

Sphaerohelea, a new neotropical predaceous nidge genus of the tribe Sphaeromiini (Diptera: ceratopogonidae)

Sphaerohelea, a new Neotropical genus of predaceous midges related to Lanehelea, Spnaeromias, Chelohelea, Phaenobezzia and Leehelea is described and illustrated and ilustrated from female specimens. This new genus includes only one species, Sphaerohelea biestroi n. sp. from northeastern Argentina as a type-species.

Two new Brazilian species of Downeshelea Wirth & Gorgan D. fluminensis and D. quasidentica, are described and illustrated.

Two new neotropical species of Monohelea Kieffer and Downeshelea Wirth & Grogan (Diptera: Ceratipogonidae)

Two new Neotropical predaceous midges are described and illustrated, Downeshelea charrua from Uruguay, and Monohelea bidenata from Argentina. The first species is described from female and male specimens; only one male is know from the second.

A new neotropical predaceous midge, Downeshelea deanei, and redescription of Downeshelea guianae (Wirth)(Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

A new species of Downeshelea Wirth & Grogan, D. deanei Felippe-Bauer & Quintelas, is described and illustrated from a male specimen from Trinidad, and a redescription of D. guianae (Wirth) is given.

New Culicoides Latreille of the subgenus Mataemyia Vargas from Pará, Brazil (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Two new species of Culicoides Latreille of the Neotropical subgenus Mataemyia Vargas are described and illustrated based on female specimens from Juruti, Pará, Brazil and compared with their similar congeners. This paper also presents a diagnosis of the subgenus Mataemyia and a systematic key for the identification of the 19 species of the subgenus.
