The interaction of formamide and the two transition states of its amide group rotation with one, two, or three water molecules was studied in vacuum. Great differences between the electronic structure of formamide in its most stable form and the electronic structure of the transition states were noticed. Intermolecular interactions were intense, especially in the cases where the solvent interacted with the amide and the carbonyl groups simultaneously. In the transition states, the interaction between the lone pair of nitrogen and the water molecule becomes important. With the aid of the natural bond orbitals, natural resonance theory, and electron localization function (ELF) analyses an increase in the resonance of planar formamide with the addition of successive water molecules was observed. Such observation suggests that the hydrogen bonds in the formamidewater complexes may have some covalent character. These results are also supported by the quantitative ELF analyses. A computational study of the isomers of tetrafluorinated [2.2]cyclophanes persubstituted in one ring, namely F-4-[2.2]paracyclophane (4), F-4-anti-[2.2]metacyclophane (5a), F-4-syn-[2.2]metacyclophane (5b), and F-4-[2.2]metaparacyclophane (6a and 6b), was carried out. The effects of fluorination on the geometries, relative energies, local and global aromaticity, and strain energies of the bridges and rings were investigated. An analysis of the electron density by B3PW91/6-31+G(d,p), B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p), and MP2/6-31+G(d,p) was carried out using the natural bond orbitals (NBO), natural steric analysis (NSA), and atoms in molecules (AIM) methods. The analysis of frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) was also employed. The results indicated that the molecular structure of [2.2]paracyclophane is the most affected by the fluorination. Isodesmic reactions showed that the fluorinated rings are more strained than the nonfluorinated ones. The NICS, HOMA, and PDI criteria evidenced that the fluorination affects the aromaticity of both the fluorinated and the nonfluorinated rings. The NBO and NSA analyses gave an indication that the fluorination increases not only the number of through-space interactions but also their magnitude. The AIM analysis suggested that the through-space interactions are restricted to the F-4-[2.2]metacyclophanes. In addition, the atomic properties, computed over the atomic basins, shave evidence that not only the substitution, but also the position of the bridges could affect the atomic charges. the first atomic moments, and the atomic volumes.

A computational quantum chemistry experiment is described of Diels-Alder reactions between 2-cycloenones and cyclopentadiene. The effects of FMO-Frontier Molecular Orbitals (HOMO-LUMO) and of the withdrawing nature of substituents at the C=C bond of cycloenones were evaluated. The calculations were made using HF/STO-3G and B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) methods. The FMO based indexes are in agreement with the experimentally observed reactivity order. NBO - Natural Bond Orbitals - analysis was used to ascertain the effect of C=C substituents on the dienophile reactivity.

On the basis of theoretical B3LYP calculations, Yáñez and co-workers (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2012, 8, 2293) illustrated that beryllium ions are capable of significantly modulating (changing) the electronic structures of imidazole. In this computational organic chemistry study, the interaction of this β-amino acid and five model Lewis acids (BeF1+, Be2+, AlF2(1+), AlF2+, and Al3+) were investigated. Several aspects were addressed: natural bond orbitals, including second order perturbation analysis of intra-molecular charge delocalization and the natural population analysis atomic charges; molecular geometries; selected infrared stretching frequencies (C-N, C-O, and N-H), and selected ¹H-NMR chemical shifts. The data illustrate that this interaction can weaken the H-O bond and goes beyond strengthening the intra-molecular hydrogen bond (N...H-O) to cause a spontaneous transfer of the proton to the nitrogen atom in five cases generating zwitterion structures. Many new features are observed. Most importantly, the zwitterion structures include a stabilizing hydrogen bond (N-H...O) that varies in relative strength according to the Lewis acid. These findings explain the experimental observations of α-amino acids (for example: J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2001, 123, 3577) and are the first reported fundamental electronic structure characterization of β-amino acids in zwitterion form.

Looking for a better knowledge concerning water and ionic liquids (ILs) interactions, a systematic study of the activity coefficients of water in pyridinium, pyrrolidinium and piperidinium-based ILs at 298.2 K is here presented based on water activity measurements. Additionally, the study of the structural effects of the pyridinium-based cation is also pursued. The results show that non-aromatic ILs are interacting more with water than aromatic ones, and among the ortho, meta and para isomers of 1-butyl-methylpyridinium chloride, the ortho position confers a more hydrophilic character to that specific IL. The physicalchemistry of the solutions was interpreted based on dissociation constants, natural bond orbitals and excess enthalpies providing a sound basis for the interpretation of the experimental observations. These results show that hydrogen bonding controls the behavior of these systems, being the anion-water one of the most relevant interactions, but modulated by the anionecation interactions.

A rationalization of the known difference between the (3,4)J(C4H1) and (3,4)J(C1H4) couplings transmitted mainly through the 7-bridge in norbornanone is presented in terms of the effects of hyperconjugative interactions involving the carbonyl group. Theoretical and experimental studies Of (3,4)J(CH) couplings were carried out in 3-endo- and 3-exo-X-2-norbornanone derivatives (X = Cl, Br) and in exo- and endo-2-noborneol compounds. Hyperconjugative interactions were studied with the natural bond orbital (NBO) method. Hyperconjugative interactions involving the carbonyl pi*c(2) =o and sigma*c(2) =o antibonding orbitals produce a decrease of three-bond contribution to both (3,4) J(C4H1) and (3,4)J(C1H4) couplings. However, the latter antibonding orbital also undergoes a strong sigma c(3)-c(4) ->sigma*c(2) =o interaction, which defines an additional coupling pathway for (3,4)J(C4H1) but not for (3,4)J(C1H4). This pathway is similar to that known for homoallylic couplings, the only difference being the nature of the intermediate antibonding orbital; i.e. for (3,4)J(C4H1) it is of sigma*-type, while in homoallylic couplings it is of pi*-type. Well–prepared, adaptive and sustainably developing specialists are an important competitive advantage, but also one of the main challenges for businesses. One option of the education system for creation and development of staff adequate to the needs is the development of pro jects with topics from real economy ("Practical Projects"). The objective assessment is an essential driver and motivator, and is based on a system of well-chosen, well-defined and specific criteria and indicators. An approach to a more objective evaluation of practical projects is finding more objective weights of the criteria. A natural and reasonable approach is the accumulation of opinions of proven experts and subsequent bringing out the weights from the accumulated data. The preparation and conduction of a survey among recognized experts in the field of project-based learning in mathematics, informatics and information technologies is described. The processing of the data accumulated by applying AHP, allowed us to objectively determine weights of evaluation criteria and hence to achieve the desired objectiveness.

Using the B3LYP/6-31G* ab initio method, we have studied the rotation about the C=C bonds in 15 push-pull ethylenes of the general formula (X,Y)C=C(CHO)(2) [X, Y = NH2, NHCH3, N(CH3)(2), OCH3, SCH3] in the gas phase. Two stationary points (minimum and transition state) were located for all compounds. The geometry, dipole moments, natural bond orbital atomic charges, as well as the rotational barriers were examined. The torsion angle 0 depends essentially on the presence or absence of intramolecular hydrogen bonds, and the barrier is a function of the torsion angle. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract : This research paper provides an overview of the state of development of urban agriculture practices in Switzerland. It analyzes their potential of expansion while taking into account the particularities of the national context. The method follows a general to particular, theory to practice and descriptive to analytical reasoning. Firstly, urban agriculture is approached through a conceptual view, including a historical overview of the relationship between town and country and of the recent appearance of the term "urban agriculture". An outline of the literature on the subject, an examination of its various scientific approaches and riding issues of its definition are elaborated as well. In a second step, urban agriculture is considered in its practical form, both in Switzerland and abroad. From this we created an extensive inventory of various types of implementations which corresponds to a panel of assets identified according to the three aspects of sustainable development: social, ecology and economics. Thirdly the specificities of Swiss context are studied in order to understand the frame in which the potential of urban agriculture could be developed. Finally, two case studies of urban agriculture are analyzed and evaluated in detail, according to the so-called institutional regimes of natural resources (RIRN) approach: the "plantage" of the Bourdonnette neighborhood in Lausanne and the "Stadiongarten" in the Kreis 5 neighborhood in Zurich. Throughout this research, urban agriculture reveals a number of advantages in terms of sustainable development, even though the Swiss cities are unanimously recognized as having a deficit in this area. As well, despite the significant benefits that are its various practices, urban agriculture is still very uncommon in Switzerland, the concept itself appearing only rarely in public debates. The main obstacle to city agriculture is identified as the lack of available space in urban areas, however this constraint can easily be surpassed. By its topographical configuration, Switzerland is particularly prone to a close proximity between urban and agricultural spaces, thereby increasing the problems of urban sprawl. Among the stakes in the struggle against these interrelated phenomena, urban agriculture could play an important role. In conclusion, a series of recommendations are proposed so that urban agriculture projects can grow and persist in Switzerland.

Along the historical background of science, the hydrogen bond became widely known as the universal interaction, thus playing a key role in many molecular processes. Through the available theoretical approaches, many of these processes can be unveiled on the basis of the molecular parameters of the subject intermolecular system, such as the variation of bond length and mainly the frequency shift observed in the proton donor. Supported by the natural bond analysis (NBO) with the quantification of the hybridization contributions, the structural deformations and vibrational effects cited above are also attributed to the outcome of the intermolecular interaction strength, which consequently can be estimated by means of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) as well as evaluated by the symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). Moreover, to identify the preferential interaction sites for proton donors and acceptors, the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) is useful in this regard.

Stable isotopic characterization of chlorine in chlorinated aliphatic pollution is potentially very valuable for risk assessment and monitoring remediation or natural attenuation. The approach has been underused because of the complexity of analysis and the time it takes. We have developed a new method that eliminates sample preparation. Gas chromatography produces individually eluted sample peaks for analysis. The He carrier gas is mixed with Ar and introduced directly into the torch of a multicollector ICPMS. The MC-ICPMS is run at a high mass resolution of >= 10 000 to eliminate interference of mass 37 ArH with Cl. The standardization approach is similar to that for continuous flow stable isotope analysis in which sample and reference materials are measured successively. We have measured PCE relative to a laboratory TCE standard mixed with the sample. Solvent samples of 200 nmol to 1.3 mu mol ( 24- 165 mu g of Cl) were measured. The PCE gave the same value relative to the TCE as measured by the conventional method with a precision of 0.12% ( 2 x standard error) but poorer precision for the smaller samples.
