Here we describe a new route to synthesize ultrafine rare earth doped and undoped tin oxide particles for catalytic applications. The catalytic behavior observed in SnO2 samples suggests the control of the catalytic activity and the selectivity of the products by the segregation of a layer of a rare earth compound with the increase of the heat-treatment temperature. The ultrafine particles were characterized by means of BET, XPS, TEM, XRD and Rietveld refinement. It was demonstrated that the effects of the dopant on the methanol decomposition reaction and on the H-2 selectivity were correlated with the segregation of a rare earth layer on the tin oxide samples. The effect of the Sb addition on the microstructural and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film was studied in this work. Experimental results show that the Sb addition allowed to control the grain size and electrical conductivity of the SnO2 thin film, resulting in a nanostructured material. The nanostructured Sb-doped SnO2 thin films present high electrical conductivity, even in the presence of high porosity, supporting the hypothesis that nanostructured material must possess strong electrical conductivity. This work involves important aspects that can be applied to the development of high performance transparent conducting thin film. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanostructured composites based on titanium dioxide have been studied in order to improve optical and photo-catalytic properties, as well as their performance in gas sensors. In this work, titanium and tin dioxides were simultaneously synthesized by the polyol method resulting in TiO2 platelet coated with SnO2 nanoparticles as was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The thermal analysis showed that the combined synthesis promotes more easily the crystallization of the TiO2 rutile phase. The composite obtained after heat treatment at 500 degrees C showed to be formed of almost only rutile phases of both oxides. The optical properties analyzed by UV-Vis spectroscopy showed that the combined oxides have higher absorbance, which reinforces a model found in the literature based on the flow of photo-generated electrons to the conduction band of SnO2 delaying the recombination of charges.

The demand for high power density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for diverse applications ranging from mobile electronics to electric vehicles have resulted in an upsurge in the development of nanostructured electrode materials worldwide. Graphite has been the anode of choice in commercial LiBs. Due to several detrimental electrochemical and environmental issues, efforts are now on to develop alternative non-carbonaceous anodes which are safe, nontoxic and cost effective and at the same time exhibit high lithium storage capacity and rate capability. Titania (TiO2) and tin (Sn) based systems have gained much attention as alternative anode materials. Nanostructuring of TiO2 and SnO2 have resulted in enhancement of structural stability and electrochemical performances. Additionally, electronic wiring of mesoporous materials using carbon also effectively enhanced electronic conductivity of mesoporous electrode materials. We discuss in this article the beneficial influence of structural spacers and electronic wiring in anatase titania (TiO2) and tin dioxide (SnO2).

SnO2 nanocrystalline thin films were deposited on glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis technique in air atmosphere at 375, 400, 425, 450 and 500 ◦C substrate temperatures. The obtained films were characterized by using XRD. The room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra of these films have near band edge (NBE) and deep level emission under the excitation of 325 nm radiation. NBE PL peak intensity decreased consistently with temperatures for samples prepared at 400, 450 and 500 ◦C, while a sudden reduction in intensity is observed for the sample prepared at 425 ◦C. A similar effect was observed for the optical transmittance spectra. These effects can be explained on the basis of the change in population of oxygen vacancies as indicated by the change in a values

Nanoparticles of tin oxide, doped with Ce and Y, were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The structural variations of the tin oxide nanoparticles were characterized by means of nitrogen physisorption, carbon dioxide chemisorption, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized samples, undoped and doped with the rare earths, were used to promote the ethanol steam reforming reaction. The SnO2-based nanoparticles were shown to be active catalysts for the ethanol steam reforming. The surface properties, such as surface area, basicity/base strength distribution, and catalytic activity/selectivity, were influenced by the rare earth doping of SnO2 and also by the annealing temperatures. Doping led to chemical and micro-structural variations at the surface of the SnO2 particles. Changes in the catalytic properties of the samples, such as selectivity toward ethylene, may be ascribed to different dopings and annealing temperatures.

This communication describes, for the first time, the growth of SnO2 nanoribbons by a controlled carbothermal reduction process. An analysis of the transmission electron microscopy image revealed that these nanoribbons have a well-defined shape, with a typical width in the range of 70-300 nm. In general, the nanostructured ribbons were more than 100 mum in length. The results reported here support the hypothesis that this ribbon-like nanostructured material grows by a vapor-solid process. This study introduces two hypotheses to explain the SnO2 nanoribbon growth process.

Luminescent SnO2: x%mol Er3+ (x=0.1-2.0) thin films have been spin coated on borosilicate and silica substrates from water colloidal suspensions that could be prepared containing up to 40% in weight SnO2 nanocrystalline powders. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy results show the well known SnO2 cassiterite structure and nanocrystallites around 10 nm in diameter, corroborating results from X-ray diffraction. Mono and multi layers have been prepared from the stable colloidal suspensions and films thickness was observed to increase linearly, up to 200 nm, with the colloidal suspensions nanoparticles amount. Excitation and emission spectra have been measured and Er3+ ions were found to be essentially incorporated into the cassiterite structure, substituting for Sn4+, for doping concentration lower than 0.05 mol%. Er3+ ions also appear segregated at the grains surface for higher doping concentration. The optical parameters (refractive index, thickness and propagating modes) of a waveguide sample were measured at 632.8 and 543.4 nm by the prism coupling technique. A monomodal waveguide was obtained with attenuation loss of 3.5 dB/cm along a 2.5 cm optical path.

Thin films of tin dioxide (SnO2) are deposited by the sol-gel-dip-coating technique, along with GaAs layers, deposited by the resistive evaporation technique. The as-built heterojunction has potential application in optoelectronic devices, combining the emission from the rare-earth doped transparent oxide (Eu3+-doped SnO2 presents very efficient red emission) with a high mobility semiconductor. The advantage of this structure is the possibility of separation of the rare-earth emission centers from the electron scattering, leading to a strongly indicated combination for electroluminescence. Electrical characterization of the heterojunction SnO2:Eu/GaAs shows a significant conductivity increase when compared to the conductivity of the individual films, and the monochromatic light irradiation (266 nm) at low temperature of the heterojunction GaAs/SnO2:Eu leads to intense conductivity increase. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the heterojunction cross section shows high adherence and good morphological quality of the interfaces substrate/SnO2 and SnO2/GaAs, even though the atomic force microscopy (AFM) image of the GaAs surface shows disordered particles, which increases with sample thickness. On the other hand, the good morphology of the SnO2:Eu surface, shown by AFM, assures the good electrical performance of the heterojunction. The observed improvement on the electrical transport properties is probably related to the formation of short conduction channels at the semiconductors interface, which may exhibit two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) behavior. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Transition-metal (TM)-doped diluted magnetic oxides (DMOs) have attracted attention from both experimental and theoretical points of view due to their potential use in spintronics towards new nanostructured devices and new technologies. In the present work, we study the magnetic properties of Sn0.96TM0.04O2 and Sn0.96TM0.04O1.98(V (O))(0.02), where TM = Fe and Co, focusing in particular in the role played by the presence of O vacancies nearby the TM. The calculated total energy as a function of the total magnetic moment per cell shows a magnetic metastability, corresponding to a ground state, respectively, with 2 and 1 mu(B)/cell, for Fe and Co. Two metastable states, with 0 and 4 mu(B)/cell were found for Fe, and a single value, 3 mu(B)/cell, for Co. The spin-crossover energies (E (S)) were calculated. The values are E (S) (0/2) = 107 meV and E (S) (4/2) = 25 meV for Fe. For Co, E (S) (3/1) = 36 meV. By creating O vacancies close to the TM site, we show that the metastablity and E (S) change. For iron, a new state appears, and the state with zero magnetic moment disappears. The ground state is 4 mu(B)/cell instead of 2 mu(B)/cell, and the energy E (S) (2/4) is 30 meV. For cobalt, the ground state is then found with 3 mu(B)/cell and the metastable state with 1 mu(B)/cell. The spin-crossover energy E (S) (1/3) is 21 meV. Our results suggest that these materials may be used in devices for spintronic applications that require different magnetization states.

Ultrathin and transparent nanostructured Ni(OH)2 films were deposited on conducting glass (F:SnO2) by a urea-based chemical bath deposition method. By controlling the deposition time, the amount of deposited Ni(OH)2 was varied over 7 orders of magnitude. The turnover number for O2 generation, defined as the number of O2 molecules generated per catalytic site (Ni atom) and per second, increases drastically as the electrocatalyst amount decreases. The electrocatalytic activity of the studied samples (measured as the current density at a certain potential) increases with the amount of deposited Ni(OH)2 until a saturation value is already obtained for a thin film of around 1 nm in thickness, composed of Ni(OH)2 nanoplatelets lying flat on the conductive support. The deposition of additional amounts of catalyst generates a porous honeycomb structure that does not improve (only maintains) the electrocatalytic activity. The optimized ultrathin electrodes show a remarkable stability, which indicates that the preparation of highly transparent electrodes, efficient for oxygen evolution, with a minimum amount of nickel is possible.
