Music Score - The Drunkard's Home, As it was Temperance Song and As it is Chorus

A music score called "The Drunkard's Home" by Frank Howard. The front cover of the score has an illustration of two different experiences. One side of the illustration appears to be a family sitting by the fire as the patriarch reads the newspaper and the matriarch tends to one of the children. The other side of the illustration shows children on the floor in torn clothing as a female is slumped over a table and two men stumble in the door.

Dixie Music Score - Accession 1398 - M690 (746)

This collection consists of an autographed copy of Herman F. Arnold’s “Dixie”. The music scale is inscribed with “At the request of Miss Minnie Parker the copy of Dixie is presented to Winthrop College [in 1923] by Prof. Herman F. Arnold + the score in 159 of + who wrote Dixie and was made the war tune of the south at the inauguration of Jefferson Davis Feb. 18th 1861 at Montgomery, Ala.” There is also a note stating that this score is “One of the Four Autograph Copies of the Score of Dixie.” Minnie Barker was curator of the Winthrop museum and the music score was displayed there until Tillman Science Building was razed in 1962 which housed the museum.

The “Dixie” Music Score Collection consists of two photographs of one of the four original autographed copies of the musical score Dixie which was presented to Winthrop College in 1923 by Professor Herman F. The collection also contains newspaper clippings and correspondence relating to the controversy surrounding Dixie and whether it is racially insensitive.

On the use of textural features for writer identification in old handwritten music scores

Writer identification consists in determining the writer of a piece of handwriting from a set of writers. In this paper we present a system for writer identification in old handwritten music scores which uses only music notation to determine the author. The steps of the proposed system are the following. First of all, the music sheet is preprocessed for obtaining a music score without the staff lines. Afterwards, four different methods for generating texture images from music symbols are applied. Every approach uses a different spatial variation when combining the music symbols to generate the textures. Finally, Gabor filters and Grey-scale Co-ocurrence matrices are used to obtain the features. The classification is performed using a k-NN classifier based on Euclidean distance. The proposed method has been tested on a database of old music scores from the 17th to 19th centuries, achieving encouraging identification rates.

Airwaves: 100 years of radio

Music composition using prominent broadcast speeches across the whole twentieth century in commemoration of the centenary of Marconi's first transatlantic radio transmission. The work is based on creating music from the found objects of melody derived from spoken intonation. Recordings of the speeches are accompanied throughout by live instrumental music.

Taken

This eighty-minute work examines responses to Australia's Stolen Generations history. Based on recorded interviews with aboriginal survivors of state removal of children, Taken uses music as a metaphor for white Australians listening to these stories, as the music follows the spoken intonation in the interviews.

Dance of the waves

An Impressionistic piece. Dance of the Waves uses and expansive structure (A, A2, B, A2, Solos, D, C2, D). The piece is an atmospheric soundscape which evokes imagery of the ocean.

New city

The theme of New City utilizes ever changing time signatures and the main theme creates a dynamic dialogue between the melody instruments and the percusssion section.

Lucy

Lucy ! contemporary jazz waltz. The structure of this piece is fairly expansive (A,A,B.A,C,D,A,A,B,A). and after an opening theme in F major which is melodically pretty, the piece segues into a fairly straight ahead Jazz waltz which then leads to the solo section before a return of the initial theme

Chillaxin'

A jazz piece for solo piano and/or jazz ensemble. This piece combines traditional and contemporary approaches. It is primarily old style swing but incorporates many modern harmonic techniques/devices, as evidenced in the score, such as: the use of upper structure triads, drop two voicing techniques, and voicing in fourths.

Full moon dance

A Jazz Celtic World Music Fusion Jig. A jig time melody placed in a setting where the rhythm section plays in 4/4 and 6/4 time simultaneously over contemporary modal jazz voicings

West Brompton blues

A Celtic Jig time melody performed over a rhythm section part that combines a 4/4 Latin feel with a 6/4 Jazz time feel simultaneously. This is all placed in a contemporary jazz harmonic context

On the run

AABA Modal/World Music Fusion piece. A modal piece with the A sections based on the D dorian mode and the B section based on the E flat dorian mode. The time signature moves around in the A section (between 6/8 and 9/8. The melody of the B section is fragmented and contains unorthodox phrase starting and ending points

Andrew Bloomfield collection, 2006-2012

Andrew Bloomfield, and his twin sister Victoria, were born on May 6, 1968 in Auckland, New Zealand. The following year, the family moved to Guelph, Ontario. It became apparent from the time Andrew was 14 months old that he differed considerably from his twin sister, and he was subsequently diagnosed with autism when he was four years old. As a result, he lived away from his family for much of his early life in order to participate in programs for autistic people. Andrew found this very difficult, but also made some significant progress. He became able to relate to and care for his dog, and was able to express his thoughts with Augmentative and Alternative Communication, especially using Supported Typing. His twin sister Victoria was an important person in his life, and her untimely death in a car accident in 1996 devastated him. However, his network of friends and family have provided immense support and helped him build a fulfilling and meaningful life. In 2004 Andrew founded a group of other adult communicators who "type to talk" which he named "Bridges-Over-Barriers". They meet monthly in Guelph and contributed to the 2010 volume with accompanying documentary film on DVD. He lives in his own home in Guelph, guaranteed by a housing trust, and has written several books, including an autobiography, Bridges over Barriers in My Life with Autism.
