We evaluated the performance of an optical camera based prospective motion correction (PMC) system in improving the quality of 3D echo-planar imaging functional MRI data. An optical camera and external marker were used to dynamically track the head movement of subjects during fMRI scanning. PMC was performed by using the motion information to dynamically update the sequence's RF excitation and gradient waveforms such that the field-of-view was realigned to match the subject's head movement. Task-free fMRI experiments on five healthy volunteers followed a 2×2×3 factorial design with the following factors: PMC on or off; 3.0mm or 1.5mm isotropic resolution; and no, slow, or fast head movements. Visual and motor fMRI experiments were additionally performed on one of the volunteers at 1.5mm resolution comparing PMC on vs PMC off for no and slow head movements. Metrics were developed to quantify the amount of motion as it occurred relative to k-space data acquisition. The motion quantification metric collapsed the very rich camera tracking data into one scalar value for each image volume that was strongly predictive of motion-induced artifacts. The PMC system did not introduce extraneous artifacts for the no motion conditions and improved the time series temporal signal-to-noise by 30% to 40% for all combinations of low/high resolution and slow/fast head movement relative to the standard acquisition with no prospective correction. The numbers of activated voxels (p<0.001, uncorrected) in both task-based experiments were comparable for the no motion cases and increased by 78% and 330%, respectively, for PMC on versus PMC off in the slow motion cases. The PMC system is a robust solution to decrease the motion sensitivity of multi-shot 3D EPI sequences and thereby overcome one of the main roadblocks to their widespread use in fMRI studies.

This paper addresses the effects of synchronisation errors (time delay, carrier phase, and carrier frequency) on the performance of linear decorrelating detectors (LDDs). A major effect is that all LDDs require certain degree of power control in the presence of synchronisation errors. The multi-shot sliding window algorithm (SLWA) and hard decision method (HDM) are analysed and their power control requirements are examined. Also, a more efficient one-shot detection scheme, called “hard-decision based coupling cancellation”, is proposed and analysed. These schemes are then compared with the isolation bit insertion (IBI) approach in terms of power control requirements.

Este trabalho visa apresentar um enquadramento da realidade económica e industrial do sector transformador de granitos ornamentais em Portugal e fazer uma análise do processo de serragem, com engenhos multi-lâminas e granalha de aço, na medida em que este é o método de seccionamento de blocos de granito mais utilizado pelas grandes indústrias do sector. Tendo em conta a importância económica desta operação produtiva na indústria em causa, foi definido como fito deste projecto a análise estatística dos custos de produção; a definição de fórmulas de cálculo que permitam prever o custo médio de serragem; e o estudo de soluções economicamente viáveis e ambientalmente sustentáveis para o problema das lamas resultantes do expurgo dos engenhos. Para a persecução deste projecto foi realizada uma recolha de dados implementando rotinas de controlo e registo dos mesmos, em quadros de produção normalizados e de fácil preenchimento, pelos operadores destes equipamentos. Esta recolha de dados permitiu isolar, quantificar e formular os factores de rentabilização do processo de serragem selecionando, dentro da amostra de estudo obtida, um conjunto de serragens com características similares e com valores próximos dos valores da média estatística. Apartir dos dados destas serragens foram geradas curvas de tendência polinomial com as quais se analisaram as variações provocadas no custo médio de serragem, pelas variações do factor em estudo. A formulação dos factores de rentabilização e os dados estatísticos obtidos permitiram depois o desenvolvimento de fórmulas de cálculo do custo médio de serragem que establecem o custo de produção diferenciado em função das espessuras com, ou sem, a incorporação dos factores de rentabilização. Como consequência do projecto realizado obteve-se um conjunto de conclusões util, para o sector industrial em causa, que evidencia a importancia da Ocupação dos engenhos e rentabilização de um espaço confinado, da Resistência oferecida à serragem pelos granitos, e da Diferença de altura entre os blocos de uma mesma carga, nos custos de transformação.

Fiber reinforced polymer composites have been widely applied in the aeronautical field. However, composite processing, which uses unlocked molds, should be avoided in view of the tight requirements and also due to possible environmental contamination. To produce high performance structural frames meeting aeronautical reproducibility and low cost criteria, the Brazilian industry has shown interest to investigate the resin transfer molding process (RTM) considering being a closed-mold pressure injection system which allows faster gel and cure times. Due to the fibrous composite anisotropic and non homogeneity characteristics, the fatigue behavior is a complex phenomenon quite different from to metals materials crucial to be investigated considering the aeronautical application. Fatigue sub-scale specimens of intermediate modulus carbon fiber non-crimp multi-axial reinforcement and epoxy mono-component system composite were produced according to the ASTM 3039 D. Axial fatigue tests were carried out according to ASTM D 3479. A sinusoidal load of 10 Hz frequency and load ratio R = 0.1. It was observed a high fatigue interval obtained for NCF/RTM6 composites. Weibull statistical analysis was applied to describe the failure probability of materials under cyclic loads and fractures pattern was observed by scanning electron microscopy. OBJECTIVES Readout-segmented echo planar imaging (rs-EPI) significantly reduces susceptibility artifacts in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the breast compared to single-shot EPI but is limited by longer scan times. To compensate for this, we tested a new simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) acquisition for accelerated rs-EPI. MATERIALS AND METHODS After approval by the local ethics committee, eight healthy female volunteers (age, 38.9±13.1 years) underwent breast MRI at 3T. Conventional as well as two-fold (2× SMS) and three-fold (3× SMS) slice-accelerated rs-EPI sequences were acquired at b-values of 50 and 800s/mm(2). Two independent readers analyzed the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in fibroglandular breast parenchyma. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was estimated based on the subtraction method. ADC and SNR were compared between sequences by using the Friedman test. RESULTS The acquisition time was 4:21min for conventional rs-EPI, 2:35min for 2× SMS rs-EPI and 1:44min for 3× SMS rs-EPI. ADC values were similar in all sequences (mean values 1.62×10(-3)mm(2)/s, p=0.99). Mean SNR was 27.7-29.6, and no significant differences were found among the sequences (p=0.83). CONCLUSION SMS rs-EPI yields similar ADC values and SNR compared to conventional rs-EPI at markedly reduced scan time. Thus, SMS excitation increases the clinical applicability of rs-EPI for DWI of the breast.

One in 3,000 people in the US are born with cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disorder affecting the reproductive system, pancreas, and lungs. Lung disease caused by chronic bacterial and fungal infections is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in CF. Identities of the microbes are traditionally determined by culturing followed by phenotypic and biochemical assays. It was first thought that the bacterial infections were caused by a select handful of bacteria such as S. aureus, H. influenzae, B. cenocepacia, and P. aeruginosa. With the advent of PCR and molecular techniques, the polymicrobial nature of the CF lung became evident. The CF lung contains numerous bacteria and the communities are diverse and unique to each patient. The total complexity of the bacterial infections is still being determined. In addition, only a few members of the fungal communities have been identified. Much of the fungal community composition is still a mystery. This dissertation addresses this gap in knowledge. A snap shot of CF sputa bacterial community was obtained using the length heterogeneity-PCR community profiling technique. The profiles show that south Florida CF patients have a unique, diverse, and dynamic bacterial community which changes over time. The identities of the bacteria and fungi present were determined using the state-of-the-art 454 sequencing. Sequencing results show that the CF lung microbiome contains commonly cultured pathogenic bacteria, organisms considered a part of the healthy core biome, and novel organisms. Understanding the dynamic changes of these identified microbes will ultimately lead to better therapeutical interventions. Early detection is key in reducing the lung damage caused by chronic infections. Thus, there is a need for accurate and sensitive diagnostic tests. This issue was addressed by designing a bacterial diagnostic tool targeted towards CF pathogens using SPR. By identifying the organisms associated with the CF lung and understanding their community interactions, patients can receive better treatment and live longer.

In this thesis we address a multi-label hierarchical text classification problem in a low-resource setting and explore different approaches to identify the best one for our case. The goal is to train a model that classifies English school exercises according to a hierarchical taxonomy with few labeled data. The experiments made in this work employ different machine learning models and text representation techniques: CatBoost with tf-idf features, classifiers based on pre-trained models (mBERT, LASER), and SetFit, a framework for few-shot text classification. SetFit proved to be the most promising approach, achieving better performance when during training only a few labeled examples per class are available. However, this thesis does not consider all the hierarchical taxonomy, but only the first two levels: to address classification with the classes at the third level further experiments should be carried out, exploring methods for zero-shot text classification, data augmentation, and strategies to exploit the hierarchical structure of the taxonomy during training.

In Brazil, the consumption of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is increasing annually, but there are no experimental studies concerning the phenolic compound contents of commercial EVOO. The aim of this work was to optimise the separation of 17 phenolic compounds already detected in EVOO. A Doehlert matrix experimental design was used, evaluating the effects of pH and electrolyte concentration. Resolution, runtime and migration time relative standard deviation values were evaluated. Derringer's desirability function was used to simultaneously optimise all 37 responses. The 17 peaks were separated in 19min using a fused-silica capillary (50μm internal diameter, 72cm of effective length) with an extended light path and 101.3mmolL(-1) of boric acid electrolyte (pH 9.15, 30kV). The method was validated and applied to 15 EVOO samples found in Brazilian supermarkets.

The formation of mono-species biofilm (Listeria monocytogenes) and multi-species biofilms (Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, and L. monocytogenes) was evaluated. In addition, the effectiveness of sanitation procedures for the control of the multi-species biofilm also was evaluated. The biofilms were grown on stainless steel coupons at various incubation temperatures (7, 25 and 39°C) and contact times (0, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8days). In all tests, at 7°C, the microbial counts were below 0.4 log CFU/cm(2) and not characteristic of biofilms. In mono-species biofilm, the counts of L. monocytogenes after 8days of contact were 4.1 and 2.8 log CFU/cm(2) at 25 and 39°C, respectively. In the multi-species biofilms, Enterococcus spp. were present at counts of 8 log CFU/cm(2) at 25 and 39°C after 8days of contact. However, the L. monocytogenes in multi-species biofilms was significantly affected by the presence of Enterococcus spp. and by temperature. At 25°C, the growth of L. monocytogenes biofilms was favored in multi-species cultures, with counts above 6 log CFU/cm(2) after 8days of contact. In contrast, at 39°C, a negative effect was observed for L. monocytogenes biofilm growth in mixed cultures, with a significant reduction in counts over time and values below 0.4 log CFU/cm(2) starting at day 4. Anionic tensioactive cleaning complemented with another procedure (acid cleaning, disinfection or acid cleaning+disinfection) eliminated the multi-species biofilms under all conditions tested (counts of all micro-organisms<0.4 log CFU/cm(2)). Peracetic acid was the most effective disinfectant, eliminating the multi-species biofilms under all tested conditions (counts of the all microorganisms <0.4 log CFU/cm(2)). In contrast, biguanide was the least effective disinfectant, failing to eliminate biofilms under all the test conditions.

Extracts obtained from 57 marine-derived fungal strains were analyzed by HPLC-PDA, TLC and ¹H NMR. The analyses showed that the growth conditions affected the chemical profile of crude extracts. Furthermore, the majority of fungal strains which produced either bioactive of chemically distinctive crude extracts have been isolated from sediments or marine algae. The chemical investigation of the antimycobacterial and cytotoxic crude extract obtained from two strains of the fungus Beauveria felina have yielded cyclodepsipeptides related to destruxins. The present approach constitutes a valuable tool for the selection of fungal strains that produce chemically interesting or biologically active secondary metabolites.

This paper addresses the capacitated lot sizing problem (CLSP) with a single stage composed of multiple plants, items and periods with setup carry-over among the periods. The CLSP is well studied and many heuristics have been proposed to solve it. Nevertheless, few researches explored the multi-plant capacitated lot sizing problem (MPCLSP), which means that few solution methods were proposed to solve it. Furthermore, to our knowledge, no study of the MPCLSP with setup carry-over was found in the literature. This paper presents a mathematical model and a GRASP (Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure) with path relinking to the MPCLSP with setup carry-over. This solution method is an extension and adaptation of a previously adopted methodology without the setup carry-over. Computational tests showed that the improvement of the setup carry-over is significant in terms of the solution value with a low increase in computational time.

This paper proposes a new design methodology for discrete multi-pumped Raman amplifier. In a multi-objective optimization scenario, in a first step the whole solution-space is inspected by a CW analytical formulation. Then, the most promising solutions are fully investigated by a rigorous numerical treatment and the Raman amplification performance is thus determined by the combination of analytical and numerical approaches. As an application of our methodology we designed an photonic crystal fiber Raman amplifier configuration which provides low ripple, high gain, clear eye opening and a low power penalty. The amplifier configuration also enables to fully compensate the dispersion introduced by a 70-km singlemode fiber in a 10 Gbit/s system. We have successfully obtained a configuration with 8.5 dB average gain over the C-band and 0.71 dB ripple with almost zero eye-penalty using only two pump lasers with relatively low pump power. Shot peening is a cold-working mechanical process in which a shot stream is propelled against a component surface. Its purpose is to introduce compressive residual stresses on component surfaces for increasing the fatigue resistance. This process is widely applied in springs due to the cyclical loads requirements. This paper presents a numerical modelling of shot peening process using the finite element method. The results are compared with experimental measurements of the residual stresses, obtained by the X-rays diffraction technique, in leaf springs submitted to this process. Furthermore, the results are compared with empirical and numerical correlations developed by other authors.
