Transition metal molybdates of the formulaAMoO4 whereA=Fe, Co or Ni exhibit a first-order phase transition between 670K–970K. An investigation of the lowtemperature (lt) and high-temperature (ht) phases by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and other physical methods shows that the phase transition is associated with a valence change of the typeA 2++Mo6+αA 3++Mo5+ in the cases of iron and cobalt molybdates.

Scheelite-related -Ln2Mo3O12(Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, or Dy) oxides are reduced by hydrogen at 780–870 K yielding molybdenum (IV) oxides of formula Ln2Mo3O9. The latter crystallize in a tetragonal scheelite (ABO4) type structure where one third of the A sites and a quarter of the anion sites are vacant: Ln2/3(cat)1/3MoO3(an). The reaction Ln2Mo3O12+ 3H2 Ln2Mo3O9(an)3+ 3H2O may be regarded as topochemically controlled, since both the parent and the product phases have scheelite-related structures. Infrared spectra and electrical and magnetic properties of these metastable defect scheelite phases are reported.

Three new compounds AgLnMo(2)O(8) (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb) crystallize with a tetragonal scheelite-type structure characterized by MoO4 tetrahedra. The IR spectra show three absorption bands, which correspond respectively to the nu(1), nu(2), and nu(3) modes of the tetrahedral-MoO42- groups. The emission of AgGdMo2O8 shows the band of the MoO42- groups around 600 nm wavelength with very weak intensity. Both AgEuMo2O8 and AgTbMo2O8 emit intensely, and the concentration quenchings of both Eu3+ and Tb3+ luminescences are very weak. For all compounds, Ag+ luminescence is not observed. Theoretical researches are performed on the alpha-R2MoO6 (R = Y, Gd, Tb Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb) and pyrochlore-type R2Mo2O7 (R = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy) rare earth molybdates by using chemical bond theory of dielectric description. The chemical bonding characteristics and their relationship with thermal expansion property and compressibility are explored. The calculated values of linear thermal expansion coefficient (LTEC) and bulk modulus agree well with the available experimental values. The calculations reveal that the LTECs and the bulk moduli do have linear relationship with the ionic radii of the lanthanides: the LTEC decreases from 6.80 to 6.62 10(-6)/K and the bulk modulus increases from 141 to 154 GPa when R goes in the order Gd, Tb Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in the alpha-R2MoO6 series; while in the R2Mo2O7 series, the LTEC ranges from 6.80 to 6.61 10(-6)/K and the bulk modulus ranges from 147 to 163 GPa when R varies in the order Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy.

Luminescent hybrid Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of polyoxometaloeuropate (Na9EuW10O36) were successfully prepared. Low-angle X-ray diffraction data demonstrate that the LB films have a well-defined lamellar structure. The hybrid LB films can exhibit strong luminescence under UV irradiation, which can be observed by the human eye. The effect of the lipid ocradecylamine, on the luminescence of polyoxometaloeuropate was discussed and compared with that of the lipid dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide. It is found that the intensity ratio for the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition to the D-5(0) --> F-7(1) transition of europium in two kinds of LB films is quite different. The X-ray photoelectron spectra data verify that there exist different interactions between two lipids and the inorganic polyanions. The different interactions between two lipids and the polyanions may result in the distortion of the site symmetry for europium to a different extent, which may account for the difference in luminescent behavior between the two kinds of LB films.

A series of compounds, La2/3 - xLi3xMoO4, were first prepared. Their structures are tetragonal scheelites with the cationic defects. The cell parameters a, c and values of c/a decrease with the increasing of the substitution amount (3x) of lithium ion. Cationic vacancies are getting more as Li+ concentration is lower. The diffusion of lithium ion is predominant. The concentration of charge carriers increases with increasing the substitution amount (3x) of lithium ion, meanwhile, the concentration of cationic vacancies decreases. The conductivity approaches the best when the substitution amount (3x) of lithium ion is about 0.3. The conductivity of La0.567Li0.3MoO4 is 6.5 x 10(-6) S . cm(-1) at room temperature.

The europium-substituted heteropolytungstate K13Eu(SiW11O39)(2) was successfully assembled into two lipids by LB technique for the first time. X-ray diffraction has shown a well defined lamellar for the LB films. The LB films have been characterized by fluorescence spectra and the characteristic luminescence behaviors were discussed. The ligand-metal charge transfer band could be observed in the spectra of the LB films, which could not be found in that of heteropolytungstate solid. The results of fluorescence spectra indicate the energy could be effectively transferred from ligands to the Eu3+ ions in the LB films and the luminescence efficiency was increased greatly. The influences of various lipids on the luminescence of polyoxometalates were investigated. The various interactions between monolayer and polyanions have different effect on the luminescence properties of europium-substituted heteropolytungstate.

From the chemical bond viewpoint, the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) tensor coefficients of some Re-2(MoO4)(3) (ReMO)-type tare earth molybdates, with Re = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy, have been calculated by using the chemical bond theory of complex crystals and the modified bond charge model. All kinds of constituent chemical bonds are considered in the calculation. The major part of the NLO properties of these ReMO crystals is found from the ReO7 groups. The NLO coefficients of these ReMO crystals decrease with Re from Pr to Dy. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Four new compounds AgLnW(2)O(8) (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy) are prepared by solid-state reactions. They crystallize with a scheelite-related monoclinic symmetry. Infrared (IR) spectra show complicated absorption transitions in the region of 1000-400 cm(-1) that are similar to those of AgLnMo(2)O(8). Broad excitation and emission bands of the tungstate group are observed in AgGdW2O8 and AgTbW2O8 with a large Stokes shift, 12 573 and 12 387 cm(-1), respectively. Excitation and emission spectra of AgLnW(2)O(8) (Ln = Eu, Gd and Tb) show that energy transfer from the tungstate to EU3+, Gd3+ and Tb3+ occurs and that Eu3+ ions occupy a single crystallographic site with the C-2 Site symmetry. Crystalline molybdate thin films were prepared by the complex polymerization method. The AMoO(4) (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) films were deposited onto Si wafers by the spinning technique. The Mo-O bond in the AMoO(4) structure was confirmed by FTIR spectra. X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of crystalline scheelite-type phase. The mass, size, and basicity of A(2+) cations was found to be dependent on the intrinsic characteristics of the materials. The grain size increased in the following order: CaMoO4 < SrMoO4 < BaMoO4. The emission band wavelength was detected at around 576 nm. Our findings suggest that the material's morphology and photoluminescence were both affected by the variations in cations (Ca, Sr, or Ba) and in the thermal treatment.

In this communication, we investigate the effect of different surfactants: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-K40) on the growth process of zinc molybdate (beta-ZnMoO4) microcrystals synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at 140 degrees C for 8 h. These microcrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns proved that these crystals are monophasic and present a wolframite-type monoclinic structure. FE-SEM images revealed that the surfactants modified the crystal shapes, suggesting the occurrence of distinct crystal growth processes. The CTAB cationic surfactant promotes the hindrance of small nuclei that leads to the formation of rectangle-like crystals, SDS anionic surfactant induces a growth of irregular hexagons with several porous due to considerable size effect of counter-ions on the crystal facets, PVP-K40 non-ionic surfactant allows a reduction in size and thickness of plate-like crystals, while without surfactants have the formation of irregular plate-like crystals. Finally, the PL properties of beta-ZnMoO4 microcrystals were explained by means of different shape/size, surface defects and order-disorder into lattice. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This thesis is concerned with in-situ time-, temperature- and pressure-resolved synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction investigations of a variety of inorganic compounds with twodimensional layer structures and three-dimensional framework structures. In particular, phase stability, reaction kinetics, thermal expansion and compressibility at non-ambient conditions has been studied for 1) Phosphates with composition MIV(HPO4)2·nH2O (MIV = Ti, Zr); 2) Pyrophosphates and pyrovanadates with composition MIVX2O7 (MIV = Ti, Zr and X = P, V); 3) Molybdates with composition ZrMo2O8. The results are compiled in seven published papers and two manuscripts. Reaction kinetics for the hydrothermal synthesis of α-Ti(HPO4)2·H2O and intercalation of alkane diamines in α-Zr(HPO4)2·H2O was studied using time-resolved experiments. In the high-temperature transformation of γ-Ti(PO4)(H2PO4)·2H2O to TiP2O7 three intermediate phases, γ'-Ti(PO4)(H2PO4)·(2-x)H2O, β-Ti(PO4)(H2PO4) and Ti(PO4)(H2P2O7)0.5 were found to crystallise at 323, 373 and 748 K, respectively. A new tetragonal three-dimensional phosphate phase called τ-Zr(HPO4)2 was prepared, and subsequently its structure was determined and refined using the Rietveld method. In the high-temperature transformation from τ-Zr(HPO4)2 to cubic α-ZrP2O7 two new orthorhombic intermediate phases were found. The first intermediate phase, ρ-Zr(HPO4)2, forms at 598 K, and the second phase, β-ZrP2O7, at 688 K. Their respective structures were solved using direct methods and refined using the Rietveld method. In-situ high-pressure studies of τ-Zr(HPO4)2 revealed two new phases, tetragonal ν-Zr(HPO4)2 and orthorhombic ω-Zr(HPO4)2 that crystallise at 1.1 and 8.2 GPa. The structure of ν-Zr(HPO4)2 was solved and refined using the Rietveld method. The high-pressure properties of the pyrophosphates ZrP2O7 and TiP2O7, and the pyrovanadate ZrV2O7 were studied up to 40 GPa. Both pyrophosphates display smooth compression up to the highest pressures, while ZrV2O7 has a phase transformation at 1.38 GPa from cubic to pseudo-tetragonal β-ZrV2O7 and becomes X-ray amorphous at pressures above 4 GPa. In-situ high-pressure studies of trigonal α-ZrMo2O8 revealed the existence of two new phases, monoclinic δ-ZrMo2O8 and triclinic ε-ZrMo2O8 that crystallises at 1.1 and 2.5 GPa, respectively. The structure of δ-ZrMo2O8 was solved by direct methods and refined using the Rietveld method.

This thesis deals with the transformation of ethanol into acetonitrile. Two approaches are investigated: (a) the ammoxidation of ethanol to acetonitrile and (b) the amination of ethanol to acetonitrile. The reaction of ethanol ammoxidation to acetonitrile has been studied using several catalytic systems, such as vanadyl pyrophosphate, supported vanadium oxide, multimetal molibdates and antimonates. The main conclusions are: (I) The surface acidity must be very low, because acidity catalyzes several undesired reactions, such as the formation of ethylene, and of heavy compounds as well. (II) Supported vanadium oxide is the catalyst showing the best catalytic behaviour, but the role of the support is of crucial importance. (III) Both metal molybdates and antimonates show interesting catalytic behaviour, but are poorly active, and probably require harder conditions than those used with the V oxide-based catalysts. (IV) One key point in the reaction network is the rate of reaction between acetaldehyde (the first intermediate) and ammonia, compared to the parallel rates of acetaldehyde transformation into by-products (CO, CO2, HCN, heavy compounds). Concerning the non-oxidative process, two possible strategies are investigated: (a) the ethanol ammonolysis to ethylamine coupled with ethylamine dehydrogenation, and (b) the direct non-reductive amination of ethanol to acetonitrile. Despite the good results obtained in each single step, the former reaction does not lead to good results in terms of yield to acetonitrile. The direct amination can be catalyzed with good acetonitrile yield over catalyst based on supported metal oxides. Strategies aimed at limiting catalyst deactivation have also been investigated.
