Lyotropic nematics consisting of surfactant-cosurfactant water solutions may present a biaxial phase or direct U(+) <-> U(-) transitions, in different regions of the temperature-relative concentration phase diagram, for different systems and compositions. We propose that these may be related to changes of uniaxial micellar form, which may occur either smoothly or abruptly. Smooth change of cylinder-like into disc-like shapes requires a distribution of Maier-Saupe interaction constants and we consider two limiting cases for the distribution of forms: a single Gaussian and a double Gaussian. Alternatively, an abrupt change of form is described by a discontinuous distribution of interaction constants. Our results show that the dispersive distributions yield a biaxial phase, while an abrupt change of shape leads to coexistence of uniaxial phases. Fitting the theory to the experiment for the ternary system KL/decanol/D2O leads to transition lines in very good agreement with experimental results. In order to rationalise the results of the comparison, we analyse temperature and concentration form dependence, which connects micellar and experimental macroscopic parameters. Physically consistent variations of micellar asymmetry, amphiphile partitioning and volume are obtained. To the best of the authors` knowledge, this is the first truly statistical microscopic approach that is able to model experimentally observed lyotropic biaxial nematic phases.

Phospholipid (PL) molecules form the main structure of the membrane that prevents the direct contact of opposing articular cartilage layers. In this paper we conceptualise articular cartilage as a giant reverse micelle (GRM) in which the highly hydrated three-dimensional network of phospholipids is electrically charged and able to resist compressive forces during joint movement, and hence loading. Using this hypothetical base, we describe a hydrophilic-hydrophilic (HL-HL) biopair model of joint lubrication by contacting cartilages, whose mechanism is reliant on lamellar cushioning. To demonstrate the viability of our concept, the electrokinetic properties of the membranous layer on the articular surface were determined by measuring via microelectrophoresis, the adsorption of ions H, OH, Na and Cl on phospholipid membrane of liposomes, leading to the calculation of the effective surface charge density. The surface charge density was found to be -0.08 ± 0.002 cm-2 (mean ± S.D.) for phospholipid membranes, in 0.155 M NaCl solution and physiological pH. This value was approximately five times less than that measured in 0.01 M NaCl. The addition of synovial fluid (SF) to the 0.155 M NaCl solution reduced the surface charge density by 30% which was attributed to the binding of synovial fluid macromolecules to the phospholipid membrane. Our experiments show that particles charge and interact strongly with the polar core of RM. We demonstrate that particles can have strong electrostatic interactions when ions and macromolecules are solubilized by reverse micelle (RM). Since ions are solubilized by reverse micelle, the surface entropy influences the change in the charge density of the phospholipid membrane on cartilage surfaces. Reverse micelles stabilize ions maintaining equilibrium, their surface charges contribute to the stability of particles, while providing additional screening for electrostatic processes. © 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Thermally stable mesoporous TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films with pore size of 50 nm have been synthesized by adopting the polymeric micelle-assembly method. A triblock copolymer, poly(styrene-b-2-vinyl pyridine-b-ethylene oxide), which serves as a template for the mesopores, was utilized to form polymeric micelles. The effective interaction of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with the polymeric micelles enabled us to fabricate stable mesoporous films. By changing the molar ratio of TEOS and TTIP, several mesoporous TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films with different compositions can be synthesized. The presence of amorphous SiO2 phase effectively retards the growth of anatase TiO2 crystal in the pore walls and retains the original mesoporous structure, even at higher temperature (650 °C). These TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films are of very high quality, without any cracks or voids. The addition of SiO2 phase to mesoporous TiO2 films not only adsorbs more organic dyes, but also significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity compared to mesoporous pure TiO2 film without SiO2 phase.

Three new cationic amphiphiles bearing anthraquinone moieties at the polar headgroup region were synthesized, The single-chain amphiphile, N,N-dimethyl-N-octadecyl-N-(9,10-dihydro dioxoanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 1, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide upon dispersion in water gave co-micellar aggregates containing covalently attached anthraquinone residues at the polar aqueous interfaces. The other two double-chain amphiphiles, N,N-dioctadecyl-N-methyl-N-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxoanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 2 and N,N-dimethyl-N-(1,2-bispalmitoyloxypropanyl)-N-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 3, however, on dispersion in aqueous media produced vesicular aggregates. The critical temperatures for the gel to liquid-crystalline-like phase transition processes for the vesicular systems were determined by following temperature-dependent changes in the ratios of keto-enol tautomeric forms of benzoylacetanilide doped within respective. vesicular assemblies. The redox chemistry of the these supramolecular assemblies was also studied by following the time-dependent changes in the ITV-VIS absorption spectroscopy in the presence of exogenous reducing or oxidizing agents, Electrochemical studies using glassy carbon electrodes reveal that redox-active amphiphiles adsorb on to the glassy carbon surfaces to form electroactive deposits when dipped into aqueous suspensions of either of these aggregates irrespective of the micellar or vesicular nature of the dispersions.

The vesicle-micelle transition in aqueous mixtures of dioctadecyidimethylammonium and octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DODAB and C(18)TAB) cationic surfactants, having respectively double and single chain, was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSQ, steady-state fluorescence, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and surface tension. The experiments performed at constant total surfactant concentration, up to 1.0 mM, reveal that these homologous surfactants mix together to form mixed vesicles and/or micelles, depending on the relative amount of the surfactants. The melting temperature T-m of the mixed DODAB-C(18)TAB vesicles is larger than that for the neat DODAB in water owing to the incorporation of C(18)TAB in the vesicle bilayer. The surface tension decreases sigmoidally with C(18)TAB concentration and the inflection point lies around (XDODAB) approximate to 0.4, indicating the onset of micelle formation owing to saturation of DODAB vesicles by C(18)TAB molecules. When XDODAB > 0.5 C(18)TAB molecules are mainly solubilised by the vesicles, but when XDODAB < 0.25 micelles are dominant. Fluorescence data of the Nile Red probe incorporated in the system at different surfactant molar fractions indicate the formation of micelle and vesicle structures. These structures have apparent hydrodynamic radius RH of about 180 and 500-800 nm, respectively, as obtained by DLS measurements. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have used isothermal titration calorimetry to investigate the vesicle-to-micelle transition in dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) and chloride (DODAC) vesicle dispersions induced by the nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether (C12E8) at room temperature. Small and giant unilamellar vesicles were prepared by sonication and without sonication, respectively, of the pure cationic surfactants at low concentrations in water. The titration of 1.0 mM DODAX (X = Cl- and Br-) by a concentrated micellar solution of C12E8 shows that the enthalpy of interaction (DeltaH(obs)) of C12E8 in micellar form with DODAX is always endothermic. The titration curves are understood on the basis of superposition of the enthalpies of partitioning of C12E8 into the bilayer, of micelle formation and of vesicle-to-micelle transformation. The enthalpy, DeltaH(obs), initially increases owing to the incorporation of C12E8 into the vesicle bilayer until the C12E8/DODAX saturation ratio (R-sat) is reached, then DeltaH(obs) decreases, in different ways for DODAB and DODAC, owing to degradation of vesicles and formation of mixed micelles and intermediary structures up to the C12E8/DODAX solubilization ratio, R-sol. Above R-sol only mixed micelles exist. The surfactant solubilization takes place in three stages. All the critical ratios are lower for DODAB than for DODAC, meaning that C12E8 solubilizes more strongly in DODAB for example, R-sat is 0.8 for DODAB and 1.2 for DODAC. Sonication has no significant effect on the transition.

MyoD is a member of a family of DNA-binding transcription factors that contain a helix-loop-helix (HLH) region involved in protein-protein interactions. In addition to self-association and DNA binding, MyoD associates with a number of other HLH-containing proteins, thereby modulating the strength and specificity of its DNA binding. Here, we examine the interactions of full-length MyoD with itself and with an HLH-containing peptide portion of an E2A gene product, E47-96. Analytical ultracentrifugation reveals that MyoD forms micelles that contain more than 100 monomers and are asymmetric and stable up to 36 degrees C. The critical micelle concentration increases slightly with temperature, but micelle size is unaffected. The micelles are in reversible equilibrium with monomer. Addition of E47-96 results in the stoichiometric formation of stable MyoD-E47-96 heterodimers and the depletion of micelles. Micelle formation effectively holds the concentration of free MyoD constant and equal to the critical micelle concentration. In the presence of micelles, the extent of all interactions involving free MyoD is independent of the total MyoD concentration and independent of one another. For DNA binding, the apparent relative specificity for different sites can be affected. In general, heterodimer-associated activities will depend on the self-association behavior of the partner protein.

n-Octyl-beta-D-glueopyranoside (OG) is a non-ionic glycolipid, which is used widely in biotechnical and biochemical applications. All-atom molecular dynamics simulations from two different initial coordinates and velocities in explicit solvent have been performed to characterize the structural behaviour of an OG aggregate at equilibrium conditions. Geometric packing properties determined from the simulations and small angle neutron scattering experiment state that OG micelles are more likely to exist in a non-spherical shape, even at the concentration range near to the critical micelle concentration (0.025 M). Despite few large deviations in the principal moment of inertia ratios, the average micelle shape calculated from both simulations is a prolate ellipsoid. The deviations at these time scales are presumably the temporary shape change of a micelle. However, the size of the micelle and the accessible surface areas were constant during the simulations with the micelle surface being rough and partially elongated. Radial distribution functions computed for the hydroxyl oxygen atoms of an OG show sharper peaks at a minimum van der Waals contact distance than the acetal oxygen, ring oxygen, and anomeric carbon atoms. This result indicates that these atoms are pointed outwards at the hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface, form hydrogen bonds with the water molecules, and thus hydrate the micelle surface effectively. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy ("DOSY") is a useful tool for the identification of mixture components. In its basic form it relies on simple differences in hydrodynamic radius to distinguish between different species. This can be very effective where species have significantly different molecular sizes, but generally fails for isomeric species. The use of surfactant co-solutes can allow isomeric species to be distinguished by virtue of their different degrees of interaction with micelles or reversed micelles. The use of micelle-assisted DOSY to resolve the NMR spectra of isomers is illustrated for the case of the three dihydroxybenzenes (catechol, resorcinol, and hydroquinone) in aqueous solution containing sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles, and in chloroform solution containing AOT reversed micelles. © 2009 American Chemical Society.

Purpose: To develop a micelle-enhanced spectrofluorimetric method for the assay of azilsartan (AZL) in bulk form and spiked human plasma without the need for derivatization procedure. Method: The proposed method was based on studying the fluorescence behavior of AZL in Cremophor RH 40 (Cr RH 40) micellar system. The fluorescence intensity was measured at 371 nm after excitation at 264 nm. The proposed procedure was validated according to International Council on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines. Results: In aqueous solution, the fluorescence intensity of AZL was greatly enhanced by more than 3- fold in the presence of Cr RH 40. The fluorescence –concentration plot was linear over the range of 10 – 500 ng.mL-1, with a limit of detection of 3.287 ngmL-1. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of AZL in pure powder form and spiked human plasma. The mean recovery of AZL in spiked human plasma using the proposed method was 90.54 ± 1.17 %. Conclusion: The suggested method is highly sensitive and simple, and can easily be applied for the quantification of AZL in pure powder form as well as in biological fluids such as plasma.

Solar Cities Congress 2008 “Energising Sustainable Communities – Options for Our Future” THEME 3: Climate Change. Impact on Society and Culture. Sub Theme: planning and implementing holistic strategies for sustainable transport Abstract Promoting the use of cycling as an environmentally and socially sustainable form of transport. We need to reduce carbon emissions. We need to reduce fuel consumption. We need to reduce pollution. We need to reduce traffic congestion. As obesity levels and associated health problems in the developed nations continue to increase we need to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Few if any would argue with these statements. In fact many would consider these problems to be amongst the most urgent that our society faces. What if we had a vehicle that uses no fossil fuel to power it, creates no pollution, takes up far less space on the roads and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle. What if this machine would have energy efficiency levels 50 times greater than the car? This is a solution that is here, now and ready to go and many of us already own one. It is the humble bicycle. Although bicycle sales in Australia now outnumber car sales, bicycle use as a form of transport (as opposed to recreation) only constitutes around 3% to 4% of all trips. So, why are bicycles the forgotten form of transport if they promise to deliver the benefits that I have just outlined? This paper examines the underlying reasons for the relatively low use of bicycles as a means of transport. It identifies the areas of greatest potential for encouraging the use of the world’s most efficient form of transport. Tim Williams - May 2007
