second moment measurements are carried out on [(CH,),N], CdI, in the temperature range 77 to 400 K. The results are interpreted based on a molecular dynamical model of randomly reorienting methyl groups and isotropically tumbling tetramethyl ammonium group. The relaxation data show contributions from spin-rotation interaction at high temperatures and presence of inequivalent methyl groups. The correlation times and associated activation energies, connected with this model, are calculated from the data. The structure in the absorption line and in the free-induction decay signal at 77 K indicates the possibility of tunnelling motion of the methyl groups.

Internal motions of the protonic groups have been studied in polycrystalline [(CH3)4N]2HgBr4 and [(CH3)4N]2HgI4 from the temperature dependence of proton spin relaxation time (T 1) and the data analysed according to the spin lattice relaxation model due to Albert and coworkers. The temperature dependence ofT 1 in the above compounds is compared with that in (TMA)2HgCl4 and (TMA)2ZnCl4.

Abstract: The dynamics of poly(2-vinylpyridine) in chloroform solution has been examined by C-13 spin-lattice relaxation time and NOE measurements as a function of temperature. The experiments were performed at 50.3 and 100.6 MHz. The backbone carbon relaxation data have been analyzed in terms of six motional models. Among these models, the models which consider conformational transitions and bond librations for the backbone were found to be more successful. Pyridyl ring motion has been modeled as a restricted rotation with the rotational amplitude varying with temperature. The activation energy parameters obtained from the relaxation data of the pyridyl ring carbon have been compared with the energy barrier for ring rotation estimated from conformational energy calculations using the AM1 semiempirical quantum chemical method. The results of the conformational energy calculations support the description of pyridyl ring motion as a restricted rotation.

Monte Carlo calculations of the nuclear magnetic relaxation rate in a disordered metal–hydrogen system having a distribution of jump rates are reported. The calculations deal specifically with the spin-locked rotating-frame relaxation time T1ρ. The results demonstrate that the temperature variation of the rate is only weakly dependent on the distribution and it is therefore unlikely that the jump rate distribution can be extracted from relaxation measurements in which temperature is the main variable. It is shown that the alternative of measuring the relaxation rate over a wide range of spin-locking field strengths at a constant temperature can lead to an evaluation of the distribution.

The rotating-frame nuclear magnetic relaxation rate of spins diffusing on a disordered lattice has been calculated by Monte Carlo methods. The disorder includes not only variation in the distances between neighbouring spin sites but also variation in the hopping rate associated with each site. The presence of the disorder, particularly the hopping rate disorder, causes changes in the time-dependent spin correlation functions which translate into asymmetry in the characteristic peak in the temperature dependence of the dipolar relaxation rate. The results may be used to deduce the average hopping rate from the relaxation but the effect is not sufficiently marked to enable the distribution of the hopping rates to be evaluated. The distribution, which is a measure of the degree of disorder, is the more interesting feature and it has been possible to show from the calculation that measurements of the relaxation rate as a function of the strength of the radiofrequency spin-locking magnetic field can lead to an evaluation of its width. Some experimental data on an amorphous metal - hydrogen alloy are reported which demonstrate the feasibility of this novel approach to rotating-frame relaxation in disordered materials.

We critically discuss relaxation experiments in magnetic systems that can be characterized in terms of an energy barrier distribution, showing that proper normalization of the relaxation data is needed whenever curves corresponding to different temperatures are to be compared. We show how these normalization factors can be obtained from experimental data by using the Tln (t/t0) scaling method without making any assumptions about the nature of the energy barrier distribution. The validity of the procedure is tested using a ferrofluid of Fe3O4 particles.

Temperature and frequency dependence of the F-19 nuclear spin relaxation of the fluoroindate glass, 40InF(3)-20ZnF(2)- 20SrF(2)-2GaF(3)-2NaF-16BaF(2) and the fluorozirconate glass, 50ZrF(4)-20BaF(2)-21LiF-5LaF(3)-4AlF(3); are reported. Measurements were undertaken on pure and Gd3+ doped samples, in the temperature range of 185-1000 K, covering the region below and above the glass transition temperature, T-g. The temperature and frequency dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, T-1(-1), measured in the glassy state at temperature <300 K, is less than the observed dependence at higher temperatures. At temperatures >T-g, the fluorine mobility increases, leading to a more efficient spins lattice relaxation process. Activation energies, for F- motion, are 0.8 eV for the fluoroindate glass and 1 eV for the fluorozirconate glass. The addition of Gd3+ paramagnetic impurities;at 0.1-wt%, does not alter the temperature and frequency dependence of T-1(-1), but increases its magnitude more than one order of magnitude. At temperatures <400 K, the spin-spin relaxation time, T-2(-1), measured for all samples, is determined by the rigid-lattice nuclear dipole-dipole coupling, and it is temperature independent within the accuracy of the measurements. Results obtained for the pure glass, at temperatures >400 K, show that T-2(-1) decreases monotonically as the temperature increases. This decrease is explained as a consequence of the motional narrowing effect caused by the onset of the diffusive motion of the F- ions, with an activation energy around 0.8 eV. For the doped samples, the hyperfine interaction with the paramagnetic impurities is most effective in the relaxation of the nuclear spin, causing an increase in the T(2)(-1)s observed at temperatures >600 K. A renormalization-group calculation of the temperature-dependent nuclear spin relaxation rate for a magnetic impurity in a metallic host is reported. The calculation follows a simplified procedure, which produces accurate rates in the low-temperature Fermi-liquid regime, although yielding only qualitatively reliable results at higher temperatures. In all cases considered, as the temperature T diminishes, the rates peak before decaying linearly to zero in the Fermi-liquid range. For T → 0, the results agree very well with Shiba's expression relating the low-temperature coefficient of the relaxation rate to the squared zero-temperature susceptibility. In the Kondo limit, the enhanced susceptibility associated with the Kondo resonance produces a very sharp peak in the relaxation rate near the Kondo temperature. © 1991.
