The compressive behavior of carbon nanotube (CNT) foam with an entangled microstructure has become an important research area due to its excellent energy absorption capability. This report presents a tailored mechanical behavior of CNT foam under an applied magnetic field when all CNTs in the foam are coated with magnetic nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles not only enhanced the stiffness of the foam to four times but also revealed a nonlinear variation in both the stress and energy absorption capability with the gradual increase of the magnetic field. Magnetization of both CNT and attached nanoparticles along the magnetic field direction are shown to play a crucial role in determining the dominant deformation mechanism.

Brown's model for the relaxation of the magnetization of a single domain ferromagnetic particle is considered. This model results in the Fokker-Planck equation of the process. The solution of this equation in the cases of most interest is non- trivial. The probability density of orientations of the magnetization in the Fokker-Planck equation can be expanded in terms of an infinite set of eigenfunctions and their corresponding eigenvalues where these obey a Sturm-Liouville type equation. A variational principle is applied to the solution of this equation in the case of an axially symmetric potential. The first (non-zero) eigenvalue, corresponding to the largest time constant, is considered. From this we obtain two new results. Firstly, an approximate minimising trial function is obtained which allows calculation of a rigorous upper bound. Secondly, a new upper bound formula is derived based on the Euler-Lagrange condition. This leads to very accurate calculation of the eigenvalue but also, interestingly, from this, use of the simplest trial function yields an equivalent result to the correlation time of Coffey et at. and the integral relaxation time of Garanin. The results of two-dimensional micromagnetic modeling of magnetization patterns in Permalloy ellipses under the influence of rotating constant-amplitude magnetic fields are discussed. Ellipses of two different lateral sizes have been studied, 0.5m x 1.5m and 1m x 3m. The amplitude of the rotating magnetic field was varied between simulations with the condition that it must be large enough to saturate or nearly saturate the ellipse with the field applied along the long axis of the ellipse. For the smaller ellipse size it is found that the magnetization pattern forms an S state and the direction of the net magnetization lags behind the direction of the applied field. At a critical angle of the rotating magnetic field the direction of the magnetization switches by a large angle to a new S state. Both the critical angle and the angle interval of the switch depend on field amplitude. For this new state, it is instead the applied field direction that lags behind the magnetization direction. The transient magnetization patterns correspond to multi-domain patterns including two vortices, but this state never exists for the equilibrated magnetization patterns. The behavior of the larger ellipse in rotating field is different. With the field applied along the long-axis of the ellipse, the magnetization of the ellipse is nearly saturated with a vortex close to each apex of the ellipse. As the field is rotated, this magnetization pattern remains and the net-magnetization direction lags behind the direction of the field until for a certain angle of the applied field an equilibrium multi-domain state is created. Comparisons are made with corresponding experimental results obtained by performing in-field magnetic force microscopy on Permalloy ellipses.

Motion of single micrometer-sized magnetic particles on patterned magnetic surfaces is controlled by a rotating magnetic field (see Figure and cover). Patterns of thin-film magnetic elements are tailored to form transport lines. Individual particles are separated by adding junctions to the transport lines. The method can improve existing applications in biotechnology and generate new ones in life sciences.

Protein G-coated magnetic particles (MPs) were used as immobilisation supports for an antibody against okadaic acid (MAb(OA)) and carriers into a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) device for the development of a direct competitive immunosensor for okadaic acid (OA). SPR analysis of MAb(OA)-MP conjugates demonstrated that conjugations were successful with complete immobilisation of all the antibody biomolecules onto the MPs. Moreover, MAb(OA)-MP conjugates provided up to 11-fold higher SPR signals, compared to free MAb(OA). The use of conjugates in the direct competition assay provided a 3-fold lower LOD mu g/L (2.6 mu g of OA/L, equivalent to 12 mu g of OA/kg mussel meat). The presence of mussel matrix did not interfere in the OA quantification as seen in the calibration curves. Mussel samples, obtained from Ebro Delta's bays (NW Mediterranean) during a diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) event and in the presence of Dinophysis sacculus, an OA producer, in the shellfish production area, were analysed with the MP-based SPR immunosensor. The OA contents correlated with those obtained by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) (y = 0.984x -5.273, R-2 = 0.789, p <0.001) and by mouse bioassay (MBA).

We present an imaginary-time path-integral study of the problem of quantum decay of a metastable state of a uniaxial magnetic particle placed in the magnetic field at an arbitrary angle. Our findings agree with earlier results of Zaslavskii obtained by mapping the spin Hamiltonian onto a particle Hamiltonian. In the limit of low barrier, weak dependence of the decay rate on the angle is found, except for the field which is almost normal to the anisotropy axis, where the rate is sharply peaked, and for the field approaching the parallel orientation, where the rate rapidly goes to zero. This distinct angular dependence, together with the dependence of the rate on the field strength, provides an independent test for macroscopic spin tunneling.

The necessity to adapt sensors based on electrochemical techniques for high throughput analysis control increases the interest to develop new analytical systems able to perform measurements under buffer now. In this report we explored the possibility of employing a new system to make impedimetric measurements to detect the interaction between proteins and small molecules. The well-known biotin-streptavidin interaction was adopted to evaluate the proposed assembly. This system allows us to perform experiments under flow. Magnetic beads functionalized with streptavidin were used and first characterized using AFM and FTIR. Non-faradic impedance spectroscopy allowed the detection of the biotin-streptavidin interaction. Using our new system and under a flow of PBS buffer, 5 10-5 M of biotin was detected with a stable signal. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The formation of silica on core yttrium iron garnet presents a variety of different applications as corrosion resistance and stabilization of magnetic properties. Well-defined magnetic particles were prepared by heterocoagulating silica on yttrium iron garnet to protect the core. Yttrium iron garnet was obtained using a homogeneous nucleation process by controlling the chemical routes from cation hydrolysis in acid medium. The heterocoagulation was induced by tetraethyl orthosilicate hydrolysis in appropriate yttrium iron garnet dispersion medium. The presence of silica on yttrium iron garnet was characterized by vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, small area electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. On the mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain of the United States, Paleocene sands and silts are replaced during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) by the kaolinite-rich Marlboro Clay. The clay preserves abundant magnetite produced by magnetotactic bacteria and novel, presumptively eukaryotic, iron-biomineralizing microorganisms. Using ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy and electron microscopy, we map the magnetofossil distribution in the context of stratigraphy and carbon isotope data and identify three magnetic facies in the clay: one characterized by a mix of detrital particles and magnetofossils, a second with a higher magnetofossil-to-detrital ratio, and a third with only transient magnetofossils. The distribution of these facies suggests that suboxic conditions promoting magnetofossil production and preservation occurred throughout inner middle neritic sediments of the Salisbury Embayment but extended only transiently to outer neritic sediments and the flanks of the embayment. Such a distribution is consistent with the development of a system resembling a modern tropical river-dominated shelf.

A facile magnetic control system was designed in bioelectrocatalytic process based on functionalized iron oxide particles. The iron oxide particles were modified with glucose oxidase, and ferrocene dicarboxylic acid was used as electron transfer mediator. Functionalized iron oxide particles can assemble along the direction of applied magnetic field, and the directional dependence of the assembled iron oxide particles can be utilized for device purposes. We report here how such functionalized magnetic particles are used to modulate the bioelectrocatalytic signal by changing the orientation of the applied magnetic field. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are known for the unique properties conferred by their small size and have found wide application in food safety analyses. However, their high surface energy and strong magnetization often lead to aggregation, compromising their functions. In this study, iron oxide magnetic particles (MPs) over the range of nano to micro size were synthesized, from which particles with less aggregation and excellent magnetic properties were obtained. MPs were synthesized via three different hydrothermal procedures, using poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) of different molecular weight (Mw) as the stabilizer. The particle size, morphology, and magnetic properties of the MPs from these synthesis procedures were characterized and compared. Among the three syntheses, one-step hydrothermal synthesis demonstrated the highest yield and most efficient magnetic collection of the resulting PAA-coated magnetic microparticles (PAA-MMPs, >100 nm). Iron oxide content of these PAA-MMPs was around 90%, and the saturation magnetization ranged from 70.3 emu/g to 57.0 emu/g, depending on the Mw of PAA used. In this approach, the particles prepared using PAA with Mw of 100K g/mol exhibited super-paramagnetic behavior with ~65% lower coercivity and remanence compared to others. They were therefore less susceptible to aggregation and remained remarkably water-dispersible even after one-month storage. Three applications involving PAA-MMPs from one-step hydrothermal synthesis were explored: food proteins and enzymes immobilization, antibody conjugation for pathogen capture, and magnetic hydrogel film fabrication. These studies demonstrated their versatile functions as well as their potential applications in the food science area.

In recent years, interest in tissue engineering and its solutions has increased considerably. In particular, scaffolds have become fundamental tools in bone graft substitution and are used in combination with a variety of bio-agents. However, a long-standing problem in the use of these conventional scaffolds lies in the impossibility of re-loading the scaffold with the bio-agents after implantation. This work introduces the magnetic scaffold as a conceptually new solution. The magnetic scaffold is able, via magnetic driving, to attract and take up in vivo growth factors, stem cells or other bio-agents bound to magnetic particles. The authors succeeded in developing a simple and inexpensive technique able to transform standard commercial scaffolds made of hydroxyapatite and collagen in magnetic scaffolds. This innovative process involves dip-coating of the scaffolds in aqueous ferrofluids containing iron oxide nanoparticles coated with various biopolymers. After dip-coating, the nanoparticles are integrated into the structure of the scaffolds, providing the latter with magnetization values as high as 15 emu g1 at 10 kOe. These values are suitable for generating magnetic gradients, enabling magnetic guiding in the vicinity and inside the scaffold. The magnetic scaffolds do not suffer from any structural damage during the process, maintaining their specific porosity and shape. Moreover, they do not release magnetic particles under a constant flow of simulated body fluids over a period of 8 days. Finally, preliminary studies indicate the ability of the magnetic scaffolds to support adhesion and proliferation of human bone marrow stem cells in vitro. Hence, this new type of scaffold is a valuable candidate for tissue engineering applications, featuring a novel magnetic guiding option.
