Welded equipment for cryogenic applications is utilized in chemical, petrochemical, and metallurgical industries. One material suitable for cryogenic application is austenitic stainless steel, which usually doesn`t present ductile/brittle transition temperature, except in the weld metal, where the presence of ferrite and micro inclusions can promote a brittle failure, either by ferrite cleavage or dimple nucleation and growth, respectively. A 25-mm- (1-in.-) thick AISI 304 stainless steel base metal was welded with the SAW process using a 308L solid wire and two kinds of fluxes and constant voltage power sources with two types of electrical outputs: direct current electrode positive and balanced square wave alternating current. The welded joints were analyzed by chemical composition, microstructure characterization, room temperature mechanical properties, and CVN impact test at -100 degrees C (-73 degrees F). Results showed that an increase of chromium and nickel content was observed in all weld beads compared to base metal. The chromium and nickel equivalents ratio for the weld beads were always higher for welding with square wave AC for the two types of fluxes than for direct current. The modification in the Cr(eq)/Ni(eq) ratio changes the delta ferrite morphology and, consequently, modifies the weld bead toughness at lower temperatures. The oxygen content can also affect the toughness in the weld bead. The highest absorbed energy in a CVN impact test was obtained for the welding condition with square wave AC electrical output and neutral flux, followed by DC(+) electrical output and neutral flux, and square wave AC electrical output and alloyed flux.

Microcellular (MC) soles based on polybutadiene (BR) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blends for low-temperature applications were developed. A part of BR in BR-LDPE blend was replaced by natural rubber (NR) for property improvement. The BR-NR-LDPE blend-based MC sole shows good technical properties. Sulphur curing and DCP curing were tried in BR-LDPE and NR-BR-LDPE blends. Study shows that sulphur-cured MC sheets possess better technical properties than DCPcured MC sheets. 90/10 BR-LDPE and 60/30/10 BR-NR-LDPE blend combinations are found to be suitable for low-temperature applications.

An experimental setup was designed to visualize water percolation inside the porous transport layer, PTL, of proton exchange membrane, PEM, fuel cells and identify the relevant characterization parameters. In parallel with the observation of the water movement, the injection pressure (pressure required to transport water through the PTL) was measured. A new scaling for the drainage in porous media has been proposed based on the ratio between the input and the dissipated energies during percolation. A proportional dependency was obtained between the energy ratio and a non-dimensional time and this relationship is not dependent on the flow regime; stable displacement or capillary fingering. Experimental results show that for different PTL samples (from different manufacturers) the proportionality is different. The identification of this proportionality allows a unique characterization of PTLs with respect to water transport. This scaling has relevance in porous media flows ranging far beyond fuel cells. In parallel with the experimental analysis, a two-dimensional numerical model was developed in order to simulate the phenomena observed in the experiments. The stochastic nature of the pore size distribution, the role of the PTL wettability and morphology properties on the water transport were analyzed. The effect of a second porous layer placed between the porous transport layer and the catalyst layer called microporous layer, MPL, was also studied. It was found that the presence of the MPL significantly reduced the water content on the PTL by enhancing fingering formation. Moreover, the presence of small defects (cracks) within the MPL was shown to enhance water management. Finally, a corroboration of the numerical simulation was carried out. A threedimensional version of the network model was developed mimicking the experimental conditions. The morphology and wettability of the PTL are tuned to the experiment data by using the new energy scaling of drainage in porous media. Once the fit between numerical and experimental data is obtained, the computational PTL structure can be used in different types of simulations where the conditions are representative of the fuel cell operating conditions.

The primary objective of this work is to develop an efficient accelerator system for low temperature vulcanization of rubbers. Although xanthates are known to act as accelerators for low temperature vulcanization, a systematic study on the mechanism of vulcanization, the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates at varying temperatures of vulcanization, cure characteristics etc are not reported. Further. xanthate based curing systems are not commonly used because of their chance for premature vulcanization during processing. The proposed study is to develop a novel accelerator system for the low temperature vulcanization of rubbers having enough processing safely. lt is also proposed to develop a method for the prevulcanisation of natural rubber latex at room temperature. As already mentioned the manufacture of rubber products at low temperature will improve its quality and appearance. Also, energy consumption can be reduced by low temperature vulcanization. in addition, low temperature vulcanization will be extremely useful in the area of repair of defective products, since subjecting finished products to high temperatures during the process of repair will adversely affect the quality of the product. Further. room temperature curing accelerator systems will find extensive applications in surface coating industries.

Aim of the work is the implementation of a low temperature reforming (LT reforming) unit downstream the Haloclean pyrolyser in order to enhance the heating value of the pyrolysis gas. Outside the focus of this work was to gain a synthesis gas quality for further use. Temperatures between 400 °C and 500 °C were applied. A commercial pre-reforming catalyst on a nickel basis from Südchemie was chosen for LT reforming. As biogenic feedstock wheat straw has been used. Pyrolysis of wheat straw at 450 °C by means of Haloclean pyrolysis leads to 28% of char, 50% of condensate and 22% of gas. The condensate separates in a water phase and an organic phase. The organic phase is liquid, but contains viscous compounds. These compounds could underlay aging and could lead to solid tars which can cause post processing problems. Therefore, the implementation of a catalytic reformer is not only of interest from an energetic point of view, it is generally interesting for tar conversion purposes after pyrolysis applications. By using a fixed bed reforming unit at 450–490 °C and space velocities about 3000 l/h the pyrolysis gas volume flow could be increased to about 58%. This corresponds to a decrease of the yields of condensates by means of catalysis up to 17%, the yield of char remains unchanged, since pyrolysis conditions are the same. The heating value in the pyrolysis gas could be increased by the factor of 1.64. Hydrogen concentrations up to 14% could be realised.

Hydrogen has been considered as a potentially efficient and environmentally friendly alternative energy solution. However, one of the most important scientific and technical challenges that the "hydrogen economy" faces is the development of safe and economically viable on-board hydrogen storage for fuel cell applications, especially to the transportation sector. Ammonia borane (BH3NH 3), a solid state hydrogen storage material, possesses exceptionally high hydrogen content (19.6 wt%).However, a fairly high temperature is required to release all the hydrogen atoms, along with the emission of toxic borazine. Recently research interests are focusing on the improvement of H2 discharge from ammonia borane (AB) including lowering the dehydrogenation temperature and enhancing hydrogen release rate using different techniques. Till now the detailed information about the bonding characteristics of AB is not sufficient to understand details about its phases and structures. ^ Elemental substitution of ammonia borane produces metal amidoboranes. Introduction of metal atoms to the ammonia borane structure may alter the bonding characteristics. Lithium amidoborane is synthesized by ball milling of ammonia borane and lithium hydride. High pressure study of molecular crystal provides unique insight into the intermolecular bonding forces and phase stability. During this dissertation, Raman spectroscopic study of lithium amidoborane has been carried out at high pressure in a diamond anvil cell. It has been identified that there is no dihydrogen bond in the lithium amidoborane structure, whereas dihydrogen bond is the characteristic bond of the parent compound ammonia borane. It has also been identified that the B-H bond becomes weaker, whereas B-N and N-H bonds become stronger than those in the parent compound ammonia borane. At high pressure up to 15 GPa, Raman spectroscopic study indicates two phase transformations of lithium amidoborane, whereas synchrotron X-ray diffraction data indicates only one phase transformation of this material. ^ Pressure and temperature has a significant effect on the structural stability of ammonia borane. This dissertation explored the phase transformation behavior of ammonia borane at high pressure and low temperature using in situ Raman spectroscopy. The P-T phase boundary between the tetragonal (I4mm) and orthorhombic (Pmn21) phases of ammonia borane has been determined. The transition has a positive Clapeyron slope which indicates the transition is of exothermic in nature. Influence of nanoconfinemment on the I4mm to Pmn2 1 phase transition of ammonia borane was also investigated. Mesoporus silica scaffolds SBA-15 with pore size of ~8 nm and MCM-41 with pore size of 2.1-2.7 nm, were used to nanoconfine ammonia borane. During cooling down, the I4mm to Pmn21 phase transition was not observed in MCM-41 nanoconfined ammonia borane, whereas the SBA-15 nanocondfined ammonia borane shows the phase transition at ~195 K. Four new phases of ammonia borane were also identified at high pressure up to 15 GPa and low temperature down to 90 K.^

Semiconductor chip packaging has evolved from single chip packaging to 3D heterogeneous system integration using multichip stacking in a single module. One of the key challenges in 3D integration is the high density interconnects that need to be formed between the chips with through-silicon-vias (TSVs) and inter-chip interconnects. Anisotropic Conductive Film (ACF) technology is one of the low-temperature, fine-pitch interconnect method, which has been considered as a potential replacement for solder interconnects in line with continuous scaling of the interconnects in the IC industry. However, the conventional ACF materials are facing challenges to accommodate the reduced pad and pitch size due to the micro-size particles and the particle agglomeration issue. A new interconnect material - Nanowire Anisotropic Conductive Film (NW-ACF), composed of high density copper nanowires of ~ 200 nm diameter and 10-30 µm length that are vertically distributed in a polymeric template, is developed in this work to tackle the constrains of the conventional ACFs and serves as an inter-chip interconnect solution for potential three-dimensional (3D) applications.

Different storage conditions can induce changes in the colour and carotenoid profiles and levels in some fruits. The goal of this work was to evaluate the influence of low temperature storage on the colour and carotenoid synthesis in two banana cultivars: Prata and Nanicão. For this purpose, the carotenoids from the banana pulp were determined by HPLC-DAD-MS/MS, and the colour of the banana skin was determined by a colorimeter method. Ten carotenoids were identified, of which the major carotenoids were all-trans-lutein, all-trans-α-carotene and all-trans-β-carotene in both cultivars. The effect of the low temperatures was subjected to linear regression analysis. In cv. Prata, all-trans-α-carotene and all-trans-β-carotene were significantly affected by low temperature (p<0.01), with negative estimated values (β coefficients) indicating that during cold storage conditions, the concentrations of these carotenoids tended to decrease. In cv. Nanicão, no carotenoid was significantly affected by cold storage (p>0.05). The accumulation of carotenoids in this group may be because the metabolic pathways using these carotenoids were affected by storage at low temperatures. The colour of the fruits was not negatively affected by the low temperatures (p>0.05).

We report the synthesis of single-phase, crystalline CdSiO3 nanostructures at 580ºC; to the best of our knowledge, this is the lowest temperature at which this material is reported to form. The desired phase does not form below 580ºC, since the diffraction peaks are shifted to lower angles in the material treated at 570ºC when compared to JDPDS Card No. 85-0310. The source of silicon has strong influence on the product morphology: Na2SiO3 yields single-phase CdSiO3 in needle-shaped nanostructures, while high surface area mesostructured SiO2 yields coralloid-shaped particles. Low angle X-ray diffractometry reveals that the mesostructured nature of the silica precursor is not maintained in the resulting CdSiO3. Scanning electron microscopy suggests that in this case a transition occurs between the spherical morphology of the precursor and the needle-shape morphology of the material prepared from Na2SiO3. The surface area of the silica precursor has a strong influence in the reaction, since the use of commercial silica with a lower surface area does not yield the desired product.

The development of Nb(3)Al and Nb(3)Sn superconductors is of great interest for the applied superconductivity area. These intermetallics composites are obtained normally by heat treatment reactions at high temperature. Processes that allow formation of the superconducting phases at lower temperatures (<1000 degrees C), particularly for Nb(3)Al, are of great interest. The present work studies phase formation and stability of Nb(3)Al and Nb(3)Sn superconducting phases using mechanical alloying (high energy ball milling). Our main objective was to form composites near stoichiometry, which could be transformed into the superconducting phases using low-temperature heat treatments. High purity Nb-Sn and Nb-Al powders were mixed to generate the required superconducting phases (Nb-25at.%Sn and Nb-25at.%Al) in an argon atmosphere glove-box. After milling in a Fritsch mill, the samples were compressed in a hydraulic uniaxial press and encapsulated in evacuated quartz tubes for heat treatment. The compressed and heat treated samples were characterized using X-ray diffractometry. Microstructure and chemical analysis were accomplished using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. Nb(3)Al XRD peaks were observed after the sintering at 800 degrees C for the sample milled for 30 h. Nb(3)Sn XRD peaks could be observed even before the heat treatment. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. In order to reduce energy costs, high-temperature insulation porous refractory ceramics have been subjected to increasing demands. Among the techniques used to produce these materials (such as the addition of foaming agents and organic compounds), the pore generation via phase transformation presents key aspects, such as easy processing and the absence of toxic volatiles. In this study, this technique was applied to produce porous ceramics by decomposing an aluminum magnesium hydro-carbonate known as hydrotalcite (Mg(6)Al(2)(CO(3))(OH)(16)center dot 4H(2)O). It was found out that by using this complex compound, a large fraction of pores can be generated and kept at high temperatures (above 1300 degrees C) due to the in situ formation of spinel-like phases (MgAl(2)O(4)). Austenitic stainless steels cannot be conventionally surface treated at temperatures close to 550 degrees C due to intense precipitation of nitrides or carbides. Plasma carburizing allows introducing carbon in the steel at temperatures below 500 degrees C without carbide precipitation. Plasma carburizing of AISI 316L was carried out at 480 degrees C and 400 degrees C, during 20 h, using CH(4) as carbon carrier gas. The results show that carbon expanded austenite (gamma(c)), 20 mu m in depth, was formed on the surface after the 480 degrees C treatment. Carbon expanded austenite (gamma(c)), 8 mu m in depth, was formed on the surface after the 400 degrees C treatment. DRX results showed that the austenitic FCC lattice parameter increases from 0.358 nm to 0.363 nm for the 400 degrees C treatment and to 0.369 nm for the 480 degrees C treatment, giving an estimation of circa 10 at.% carbon content for the latter. Lattice distortion, resulting from the expansion and the associated compressive residual stresses increases the surface hardness to 1040 HV(0.025). Micro-scale tensile tests were conducted on specimens prepared with the conditions selected above, which has indicated that the damage imposed to the expanded austenite layer was more easily related to each separated grain than to the overall macro-scale stresses imposed by the tensile test.
