Centenarians provided autobiographical memories to either a request for a life narrative or a request to produce autobiographical memories to cue words. Both methods produced distributions with childhood-amnesia, reminiscence-bump, and recency components. The life-narrative method produced relatively more bump memories at the expense of recent memories. The life-narrative distributions were similar to those obtained from 80-year-old adults without clinical symptoms and from 80-year-old Alzheimer's dementia and depression patients, except that the centenarians had an additional 20-year period of relatively low recall between the bump and recency components. The centenarians produced more emotionally neutral memories than the other three groups and produced fewer and less detailed memories than the non-clinical 80-year-old sample.

Given the ever increasing importance of legislation to the resolution of legal disputes, there is a concomitant need for law students to be well trained in the anatomy, identification, interpretation and application of laws made by or under parliament. This article discusses a blended learning project called Indigo’s Folly, implemented at the Queensland University of Technology Law School in 2014. Indigo’s Folly was created to increase law student competency with respect to statutory interpretation. Just as importantly, it was designed to make the teaching of statutory interpretation more interesting – to “bring the sexy” to the student statutory interpretation experience. Quantitative and qualitative empirical data will be presented as evidence to show that statutory interpretation can be taught in a way that law students find engaging.

My dissertation is a corpus-based study of non-finite constructions in Old English (OE). It revisits the question of Latin influence on the OE syntax, offering a new evaluation of syntactic interference between Latin and OE, and, more generally, of the contact situation in the OE period, drawing on methods used in studying grammaticalization and language contact. I address three non-finite constructions: absolute participial construction, accusative-and-infinitive construction, and nominative-and-infinitive construction, exemplified respectively in present-day English as - She looked like a pixie sometimes, her eyes darting here and there, forever watchful (BNC CCM 98); - My first acquaintance with her was when I heard her sing (BNC CFY 2215); - Charles the Bald was said to resemble his grandfather physically (BNC HPT 175). This study compares data from translated texts against the background of original OE writings, establishing dependencies and differences between the two. Although the contrastive analysis of source and target texts is one of the major methods employed in the study, translation and translation strategies as such are only my secondary foci. The emphasis is rather on what source/target comparison can tell us about the OE non-finite syntax and the typological differences between Latin and OE in this domain, and on whether contact-induced change can originate in translation. In terms of theoretical framework, I have adopted functional-typological approach, which rests on the principles of iconicity and event integration, and to the best of my knowledge, has not been applied systematically to OE non-finite constructions. Therefore one more aim of the dissertation is to test this framework and to see how OE fits into the cross-linguistic picture of non-finites. My research corpus consists of two samples: 1) written OE closely dependent on the Latin originals, based on editions of two gloss texts, five translations, and Latin originals of these texts, representing four text types: hymns, religious regulations, homily/life narrative, and biblical narrative (180,622 words); and 2) written OE as far independent from Latin as possible, based on a selection from the York-Toronto-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Old English Prose (YCOE) and representing five text types: laws, charters, correspondence, chronicle narrative, and homily/life narrative (274,757 words).

This study analyzes the forming of the occupational identity of the well-educated fixed-term employees. Fixed-term employment contracts amongst the well-educated labour force are exceptionally common in Finland as compared to other European countries. Two groups of modern fixed-term employees are distinguished. The first comprises well-educated women employed in the public sector whose fixed-term employment often consists of successive periods as temporary substitutes. The other group comprises well-educated, upper white-collar men aged over 40, whose fixed-term employment careers often consist of jobs of project nature or posts that are filled for a fixed period only. Method of the study For the empirical data I interviewed 35 persons (26 women and 9 men) in 33 interviews, one of which was conducted by e-mail and one was a group interview. All the interviews were electronically recorded and coded. All the interviewees have two things in common: fixed-term employment and formal high education. Thirteen (13) of them are researchers, four nurses, four midwives, four journalists, and ten project experts. I used the snowball method to get in touch the interviewees. The first interviewees were those who were recommended by the trade unions and by my personal acquaintances. These interviewees, in turn, recommended other potential interviewees. In addition, announcements on the internet pages of the trade unions were used to reach other interviewees. In analysing process I read the research material several times to find the turning points in the narrative the interviewees told. I also searched for the most meaningful stories told and the meaning the interviewees gave to these stories and to the whole narrative. In addition to that I paid attention to co-production of the narrative with the interviewees and analyzed the narrative as performance to be able to search for the preferred identities the interviewees perform. (Riesman 2001, 698-701). I do not pay much attention to the question of truth of a narrative in the sense of its correspondence with facts; rather I think a working life narrative has two tasks: On the one hand one has to tell the facts and on the other hand, he/she has to describe the meaning of these facts to herself/himself. To emphasize the double nature of the narrative about one’s working life I analyzed the empirical data both by categorizing it according to the cultural models of storytelling (heroic story, comedy, irony and tragedy) and by studying the themes most of the interviewees talked about. Ethics of the study I chose to use narrative within qualitative interviews on the grounds that in my opinion is more ethical and more empowering than the more traditional structured interview methods. During the research process I carefully followed the ethical rules of a qualitative research. The purpose of the interviews and the research was told to the interviewees by giving them a written description of the study. Oral permission to use the interview in this research was obtained from the interviewees. The names and places, which are mentioned in the study, are changed to conceal the actual identity of the interviewees. I shared the analysis with the interviewees by sending each of them the first analysis of their personal interview. This way I asked them to make sure that the identity was hidden well enough and hoped to give interviewees a chance to look at their narratives, to instigate new actions and sustain the present one (Smith 2001, 721). Also I hoped to enjoy a new possibility of joint authorship. Main results As a result of the study I introduce six models of telling a story. The four typical western cultural models that guide the telling are: heroic story, comedy, tragedy and satirical story (Hänninen 1999). In addition to these models I found two ways of telling a career filled with fixed-term employments that differ significantly from traditional career story telling. However, the story models in which the interviewees pour their experience locates the fixed term employers work career in an imagined life trajectory and reveals the meaning they give to it. I analyze the many sided heroic story that Liisa tells as an example of the strength of the fear of failing or losing the job the fixed term employee feels. By this structure it is also possible to show that success is felt to be entirely a matter of chance. Tragedy, the failure in one’s trial to get something, is a model I introduce with the help of Vilppu’s story. This narrative gets its meaning both from the sorrow of the failure in the past and the rise of something new the teller has found. Aino tells her story as a comedy. By introducing her narrative, I suggest that the purpose of the comedy, a stronger social consensus, gets deeper and darker shade by fixed-term employment: one who works as a fixed term employee has to take his/her place in his/her work community by him/herself without the support the community gives to those in permanent position. By studying the satiric model Rauno uses, I argue that using irony both turns the power structures to a carnival and builds free space to the teller of the story and to the listener. Irony also helps in building a consensus, mutual understanding, between the teller and the listener and it shows the distance the teller tells to exist between him and others. Irony, however, demands some kind of success in one’s occupational career but also at least a minor disappointment in the progress of it. Helmi tells her story merely as a detective story. By introducing Helmi’s narrative, I argue that this story model strengthens the trust in fairness of the society the teller and the listener share. The analysis also emphasizes the central position of identity work, which is caused by fixed-term employment. Most of the interviewees talked about getting along in working life. I introduced Sari’s narrative as an example of this. In both of these latter narratives one’s personal character and habits are lifted as permanent parts of the actual professional expertise, which in turn varies according to different situations. By introducing these models, I reveal that the fixed-term employees have different strategies to cope with their job situations and these strategies vary according to their personal motives and situations and the actual purpose of the interview. However, I argue that they feel the space between their hopes and fears narrow and unsecure. In the research report I also introduce pieces of the stories – themes – that the interviewees use to build these survival strategies. They use their personal curriculum vitae or portfolio, their position in work community and their work morals to build their professional identity. Professional identity is flexible and varies in time and place, but even then it offers a tool to fix one’s identity work into something. It offers a viewpoint to society and a tool to measure one’s position in surrounding social nets. As one result of the study I analyze the position the fixed-term employees share on the edge of their job communities. I summarize the hopes and fears the interviewees have concerning employers, trade unions, educational institutions and the whole society. In their opinion, the solidarity between people has been weakened by the short-sighted power of the economy. The impact the fixed-term employment has on one’s professional identity and social capital is a many-sided and versatile process. Fixed-term employment both strengthens and weakens the professional identity, social capital and the building of trust. Fixed-term employment also affects one’s day-to-day life by excluding her/him from the norm and by one’s difficulty in making long-term plans (Jokinen 2005). Regardless of the nature of the job contract, the workers themselves are experts in making the best of their sometimes less than satisfying work life and they also build their professional identity by using creatively their education, work experiences and interpersonal relations. However, a long career of short fixed-term employments may seriously change the perception of employee about his/her role. He/she may start concentrating only in coping in his/her unsatisfactory situation and leaves the active improvement of the lousy working conditions to other people. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa exploratória que teve como objeto de estudo o desejo de amamentar na perspectiva das tecnologias não invasivas de cuidado de enfermagem. Objetivou: Descrever a vivência da mulher em relação à amamentação quanto ao seu desejo de amamentar. Identificar se o desejo da mulher de amamentar foi respeitado. Discutir os cuidados de enfermagem recebidos pela mulher durante o período de amamentação na perspectiva das tecnologias não invasivas de cuidado de enfermagem. Utilizou a Narrativa de Vida como método, adotou o referencial metodológico de Daniel Bertaux e realizou entrevista aberta com dezesseis mulheres em processo de amamentação, a partir do pós-parto imediato até os 06 meses de vida do bebê em atendimento no alojamento conjunto, no alojamento de mães que possuem seus bebês internados na UTI neonatal e as Estratégias de Saúde da Família com a seguinte pergunta norteadora: Fale a respeito de sua vida que tenha relação com a amamentação. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética e Pesquisa da Prefeitura Municipal de Saúde do Rio de Janeiro. A coleta de dados foi realizada no período de fevereiro a julho de 2013, até atingir o ponto de saturação. Emergiram a partir de suas narrativas duas unidades de significação: Vivência da mulher em relação à sua amamentação e Cuidados de enfermagem na perspectiva da tecnologia não invasiva de cuidado de enfermagem. O referencial teórico adotado foi Donald Woods Winnicott. As narrativas de vida das mulheres entrevistadas evidenciaram que entre dezesseis mulheres, onze queriam amamentar e cinco relataram que não queriam amamentar. Das mulheres que queriam, observa-se que algumas já possuíam o desejo, por decisão própria. Vivenciar ou ter vivenciado a amamentação; influência familiar e relação mãe-filho são fatores que levam uma mulher a decidir ou não amamentar. O estudo evidenciou que a mulher se sente completamente responsável pelo filho, julga as que não amamentam e amamenta mesmo com dificuldades. As que inicialmente, relataram o desejo de não amamentar na gravidez, no puerpério decidiram amamentar e algumas dessas, justificaram a mudança em função da pressão profissional. A Enfermagem não utiliza dos preceitos das Tecnologias Não Invasivas de Cuidado de Enfermagem para cuidar da mãe e seu filho com relação ao desejo de amamentar. O relacionamento mãe-filho é um fator que nos leva a uma reflexão considerada como uma das mais importantes quando se fala de amamentação na concepção de Donald Winnicott. A enfermagem deve incorporar possibilidades e concepções das tecnologias não invasivas de cuidado de enfermagem em sua prática nas diversas áreas de atuação. Na amamentação, as Tecnologias Não Invasivas de Cuidado de Enfermagem são excelentes ferramentas para a enfermagem praticar no seu cotidiano assistencial com mulheres que estão amamentando. Uma vez que priorizam a não invasão, o respeito ao desejo, o empoderamento, a autonomia e a autoconfiança.

In 1900, Ernst Däumig (1866–1922) wrote to Karl Kautsky of his ‘bitter experiences’ of violence in the French Foreign Legion and then in the Prussian military that had led to his recent ‘conversion’ to the socialist worldview. This article takes up Däumig's letters, articles and travelogues, and a drama, to explore how he recast his experiences of colonial and military violence twice, first as a writer for a German soldiers’ journal and then as an aspiring socialist journalist. As well as a burden that pushed him to critique his past, Däumig's military and colonial experiences are shown to have been his starting capital in the world of journalism and politics. The article gives particular attention to the process of conversion, through which Däumig forged a new life narrative out of the moral tales offered by the adopted worldview and the events of his own past. In addition to providing a case study of worldview conversion, this article demonstrates how biographical research can challenge assumptions about the impact of colonial violence on German metropolitan culture. At the same time, this biographical analysis sheds light on the early career of one of the key figures in the German Revolution of 1918 to 1921. As co-chairman of the Independent Social Democratic Party (USPD), Däumig led the USPD into union with the Communist Party in 1920.

Isolationism and neutrality are two of the recurrent themes in the study of the history of the U.S. foreign policy in the interwar years. The trauma of the Great War, which had swept away 130.000 U.S. lives and had cost $30 billion, had led public opinion to strongly oppose any involvement with European affairs. Besides, the urgent need for economic recovery during the dismal years of the Great Depression did not leave Roosevelt much room for manoeuvre to influence international events. His positions regarding the intentions of the Fascist states remained, at best, ambivalent. These facts notwithstanding, about 2800 U.S. citizens crossed the Atlantic and rushed in to help democratic Spain, which was on the verge of becoming one more hostage in the hands of the Fascism. They joined the other British, Irish and Canadian volunteers and formed the XV International Brigade. 900 Americans never returned home. This alone should challenge the commonly held assumption that the American people were indifferent to the rise of the Fascist threat in Europe. But it also begs other questions. Considering the prevailing isolationist mood, what really motivated them? With what discursive elements did these men construct their anti Fascist representations? How far did their understanding of the Spanish democracy correspond to their own American democratic ideal? In what way did their war experience across the Atlantic mould their perception of U.S. politics (both domestic and foreign)? How far did the Spanish Civil War constitute one first step towards the realization that the U.S. might actually be drawn into another international conflict of unpredictable consequences? Last but not the least, what ideological, political and cultural complicity existed between the men from the English-speaking battalions? In order to unearth some of the answers, I intend to examine their letters and see how these men recorded the historical events in which they took part. Their correspondence emerged from the desire to prove their commitment to a common cause and spoke of a common war experience, but each letter, in its uniqueness, ends up mirroring not only the social and political background of each individual fighter, but also his own particular perspective of the war, of world politics and of the Spanish people. We shall see how these letters differ and converge and how these particular accounts weave, as in an epistolary novel, a larger-than-life narrative of outrage and solidarity, despair and hope.

La toxicomanie est un problème bien réel dans la société québécoise. Cette problématique touche autant les hommes que les femmes, de tous les âges et de toutes les sphères de la société. Toutefois, les hommes adultes étant plus nombreux à utiliser les services en réadaptation des toxicomanies, le but de ce mémoire est de donner une voix à ces hommes, afin de connaitre leurs visions sur les trajectoires qui les ont menées vers cette problématique. Les témoignages de six hommes adultes ayant une dépendance à l’alcool ou aux drogues ont donc été recueillis à l’aide d’entrevues de type récit de vie. Les résultats qui se dégagent de ces histoires de vie viennent, d’un côté, corroborer certaines données de la littérature, mais mettent aussi en lumière de nouveaux éléments. En effet, les facteurs de risque de la littérature tel que l’influence des pairs, des parents consommateurs et un début précoce de la consommation font partie intégrante de la trajectoire des répondants de cette recherche. Par contre, certains éléments dont l’impulsivité qui est fortement ressortie comme facteurs de risque de la toxicomanie dans la recension des écrits n’a pas été soulevée comme notion principale par ces hommes. Les similitudes de certains éléments entre chacun des récits de vie des participants lèvent toutefois le voile sur de nouveaux facteurs de risque. Les liens pauvres avec la figure paternelle doivent être pris en considération comme facteurs puisqu’ils font partie de la majorité des histoires de vie des répondants. De plus, le revenu est aussi un élément qui a grandement été relaté par les participants puisqu’il influence la quantité ainsi que la substance consommée. Cette recherche permet de prendre davantage conscience de la réalité des hommes toxicomanes ainsi que des particularités de leur trajectoire de vie.

Cette thèse de doctorat, qui s’inscrit dans un programme de doctorat en sciences humaines appliquées, s’est d’abord construite en réponse à un problème concret, celui du roulement des infirmières et des infirmières auxiliaires dans le réseau de la santé et des services sociaux. En cours de route, il est toutefois apparu nécessaire d’élargir le questionnement à la question du rapport au travail des jeunes infirmières pour être en mesure de saisir les dynamiques sociales plus larges qui conditionnent certains choix professionnels, dont la décision de quitter son emploi. Cette thèse poursuit donc deux grands objectifs. D’une part, elle s’attarde à cerner l’ensemble des processus qui conduisent les jeunes infirmières à faire le choix de quitter leur emploi. D’autre part, elle vise à mieux comprendre comment a évolué leur rapport au travail dans le temps. La perspective théorique retenue s’appuie sur deux approches complémentaires, soit celles de la perspective des parcours de vie et de divers courants en sociologie de l’individu qui ont comme point commun d’accorder une place importante au contexte social, aux contraintes structurelles, de même qu’à l’autonomie des acteurs et à leur capacité d’agir sur leur parcours de vie. Ces approches s’avèrent particulièrement pertinentes dans le cadre de notre étude puisqu’elles permettent de rendre compte des liens complexes entre le contexte social plus global, les différents contextes de vie d’un individu et ses comportements en emploi. Elles invitent à conceptualiser le rapport au travail comme un processus qui évolue dans le temps à travers lequel plusieurs éléments de la vie d’un individu et de ses proches se combinent pour donner une orientation particulière aux trajectoires professionnelles. Vu sous cet angle, la décision de quitter se présente également comme un processus qui se construit dans un laps de temps plus ou moins long où entrent en jeu plusieurs dimensions de la vie d’un individu. La perspective adoptée dans le cadre de cette thèse permet de combler des lacunes dans ce champ de recherche où peu d’études se sont attardées à comprendre les différents processus qui façonnent le rapport au travail dans le temps et qui conduisent les infirmières à la décision de quitter leur emploi. Pour répondre aux objectifs de recherche, une étude qualitative a été menée. Des entrevues individuelles de type récit de vie ont été effectuées pour comprendre, du point de vue des participantes, comment a évolué leur rapport au travail et les processus qui les ont amenées à quitter leur emploi. Une étude de cas a été effectuée dans un centre de santé et de services sociaux de la province de Québec qui affichait un taux de roulement particulièrement élevé. L’étude visait les infirmières et les infirmières auxiliaires, groupe professionnel fortement touché par le roulement de la main-d’œuvre. Des entretiens en profondeur, d’une durée de 2h30 à 3 heures, ont été réalisées auprès de 42 infirmières et infirmières auxiliaires. Les résultats de la recherche sont présentés à travers la production de trois articles scientifiques. Le premier article, Pour une compréhension dynamique du rapport au travail: la valeur heuristique de la perspective des parcours de vie, a pour objectif de faire ressortir l’intérêt que présentent les principes analytiques associés à cette perspective dans l’étude du rapport au travail. Dans cet article, nous démontrons que le rapport au travail est le résultat d’un processus complexe où les aspirations des individus, leurs conditions concrètes d’emploi et les événements qui surviennent dans leur vie personnelle et familiale entretiennent des liens dynamiques et interdépendants qui façonnent le rapport au travail tout au long de la vie. Cet article apporte des éléments de réflexion à la question posée par plusieurs chercheurs : par quel moyen saisir ce qu’il en est du rapport au travail des jeunes? Le deuxième article, Rencontre entre l’idéaltype de travailleur et l’idéal de travail : le cas de jeunes infirmières en début de vie professionnelle, vise à rendre compte de la manière dont s’est faite la rencontre entre les attentes que les infirmières nourrissent à l’égard du travail et leur réalité concrète de travail à une période précise de leur trajectoire professionnelle, soit celle de leur insertion en emploi et des premières années de pratique. L’article démontre que trois dimensions du rapport au travail sont affectées par les nouvelles normes managériales qui prévalent dans le réseau de la santé et des services sociaux : 1) la place souhaitée du travail dans la vie, 2) la réalisation de soi par le travail et 3) le sens au travail. Cet article apporte une contribution dans la compréhension du rapport au travail de jeunes professionnelles qui exercent un métier de relation d’aide dans le contexte spécifique du réseau québécois de la santé et des services sociaux. Le troisième article, Comprendre le roulement comme un processus lié au cycle de la vie : le cas des infirmières, traite plus spécifiquement de la question du roulement de la main d’œuvre infirmière. Quatre parcours de départs sont présentés qui possèdent des caractéristiques distinctes relatives à la rencontre entre les attentes et la réalité concrète de travail, l’interaction entre le travail et la vie hors travail et la manière dont s’est construite dans le temps la décision de quitter son emploi. Les résultats démontrent que la décision de quitter se présente comme un processus qui se construit dans un laps de temps plus ou moins long, qui implique différentes dimensions de la vie d’un individu et qui est intimement lié à la quête de réalisation de soi au travail et dans les autres domaines de la vie. Cet article propose une façon d’appréhender le phénomène du roulement qui se distingue des modèles dominants qui abordent cette question à partir d’une lecture essentiellement individualisante et psychologisante des départs. La contribution de cette thèse à l’avancement des connaissances réside principalement dans le fait qu’elle appréhende autrement la question du rapport au travail et celle du roulement de la main-d’œuvre en recourant à la perspective des parcours de vie et à la sociologie de l’individu. L’approche que nous avons préconisée permet de saisir les processus sociaux et la multiplicité des éléments à prendre en considération dans l’étude du rapport au travail des jeunes infirmières et de la décision de quitter son emploi. Elle met en exergue l’importance de considérer le contexte social plus global dans lequel s’inscrit tout individu qui, dans les sociétés contemporaines, doit s’engager dans un travail de construction identitaire tout au long de la vie.

This study investigated whether temporal clustering of autobiographical memories (AMs) around periods of self-development ( [Rathbone et al., 2008] and [Rathbone et al., 2009]) would also occur when imagining future events associated with the self. Participants completed an AM task and future thinking task. In both tasks, memories and future events were cued using participant-generated identity statements (e.g., I am a student; I will be a mother). Participants then dated their memories and future events, and finally gave an age at which each identity statement was judged to emerge. Dates of memories and future events were recoded as temporal distance from the identity statement used to cue them. AMs and future events both clustered robustly around periods of self-development, indicating the powerful organisational effect of the self. We suggest that life narrative structures are used to organise future events as well as memories.

The focus of this thesis is a production of video biographies with/by sheltered teenagers. The general objective is discuss the potential production of video biographies while a device of research-action-formation. From de point of view of research, the study interrogates cultural practices that demarcates the passage of teenagers in shelter institutional; From the point of view of action, seeks to identify the modes of appropriation of space for audiovisual creation by teenagers; and, from the point of view of formation, asks the potentiality of audiovisual language while the way from which teenagers can auto-configure themselves responsibly, in the reinvention of places and others worlds for them. The research falls in the intersection of qualitative approach of ethnographic and of research-action-formation. Is anchored theoretically in autobiographical approaches - Pineau (2005); Passeggi (2008); Delory-Momberger (2008); Josso (2010) e Bertaux (2010) - and in the filmic method - Ramos (2003); Wohlgemuth (2005) and Comoli (2009).
