Molecular Lego (R): non-centrosymmetric alignment within interdigitating layers

(E)-N-Hexadecyl-4-[2-(4-octadecyloxynaphthyl) ethenyl] quinolinium bromide, which has a wide-bodied chromophore and terminal n-alkyl groups, adopts a U-shape when spread at the air-water interface but a stretched conformation when compressed to ca. 35 mN m(-1). The high-pressure phase has a narrow stability range prior to collapse but may be extended from 40 to 60 mN m(-1) by co-spreading the dye in a 1 : 1 ratio with docosanoic acid. The mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film has a monolayer thickness of 4.6 +/- 0.2 nm which decreases to 2.5 +/- 0.1 nm layer(-1) in the bulk, the reduction arising from an interdigitating layer arrangement, both top and bottom. It is the first example of LB-Lego(R) and, in addition, represents the only fully interdigitating structure with non-centrosymmetrically aligned chromophores. They are tilted 38 degrees from the substrate normal. The second-harmonic intensity increases quadratically with the number of layers, i.e. as I-(N)(2 omega) = (I(1)N2)-N-2 omega, with a second-order susceptibility of chi ((2))(zzz) = 30 pm V-1 at 1064 nm for refractive indices of n(omega) = 1.55 and n(2 omega) = 1.73, d = 2.5 nm layer(-1) and phi = 38 degrees. Angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of these films provide no evidence of the bromide counterion, which suggests that it is replaced by OH 2 or HCO3-, which occur naturally in the aqueous subphase, or C21H43COO- from the co-deposited fatty acid. This probably applies to all cationic dyes deposited by the LB technique.

NXT: el robot de Lego

Treball de recerca realitzat per un alumne d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit cientí­fic del Jovent l'any 2009. L'NXT és un robot creat per l'empresa Lego que disposa d'un controlador, de diversos servo motors i de sensors (tacte, llum, ultrasons, so...). Es programa mitjançant un programa especial, pensat per nois i noies de catorze anys, anomenat Lego Mindstorms. S'estudia el funcionament d'aquest programa i les parts del sistema de control del robot. L'estudi engloba el controlador, quatre sensors i els servomotors.

LEGO® bricks as building blocks for centimeter-scale biological environments

LEGO bricks are commercially available interlocking pieces of plastic that are conventionally used as toys. We describe their use to build engineered environments for cm-scale biological systems, in particular plant roots. Specifically, we take advantage of the unique modularity of these building blocks to create inexpensive, transparent, reconfigurable, and highly scalable environments for plant growth in which structural obstacles and chemical gradients can be precisely engineered to mimic soil.

Legal LEGO: Model based computer assisted teaching in evidence courses

This paper describes the development of a new approach to the use of ICT for the teaching of courses in the interpretation and evaluation of evidence. It is based on ideas developed for the teaching of science to school children, in particular the importance of models and qualitative reasoning skills. In the first part, we make an analysis of the basis of current research into “evidence scholarship” and the demands such a system would have to meet. In the second part, we introduce the details of such a system that we developed initially to assist police in the interpretation of evidence.

Os professores e o consumo de projetos que chegam à escola: o caso do Projeto Lego Education

O estudo proposto focaliza o modo como os professores recebem, consomem e se apropriam de projetos educativos que são implementados nas escolas de ensino fundamental. Trata-se de um estudo de caso que focaliza a implementação, iniciada em 2008, do Projeto Lego Education em escolas de uma rede municipal de ensino no interior paulista. A implementação do referido projeto insere-se em um contexto mais amplo marcado pelo crescimento de um “rentável mercado formativo” (Nóvoa, 1999) entre nós atualmente. Diante desse contexto, surge uma questão: Como foi, para os professores daquela rede de ensino, a inserção do Projeto Lego Education em seu trabalho docente e como os mesmos lidam com o projeto atualmente? Para tentar responder a essa questão o presente estudo foi realizado com os professores que foram capacitados e atuaram na implementação do projeto, a partir de entrevistas semi-estruturadas e observações. Objetivou-se investigar como o referido projeto foi apropriado (de Certeau, 1994) pelos professores na sua implementação e como os mesmos percebem o projeto atualmente. Pretendeu-se identificar, assim, maneiras pelas quais os professores relacionam-se com materiais didáticos, livros/guias do professor e cursos de capacitação docente ligados ao Projeto Lego Education, procurando caracterizar as maneiras como os mesmos se apropriam e consomem (de Certeau, 1994) tais produtos que lhes são dirigidos. Nesse estudo foi realizada também a análise de documentos relacionados ao Projeto Lego Education (sites das empresas envolvidas, manuais e revistas, entre outros materiais), focando em como esses materiais se referem ao professor e sua prática em sala de aula. A platform for real-time control education with LEGO MINDSTORMS.

A set of software development tools for building real-time control systems on a simple robotics platform is described in the paper. The tools are being used in a real-time systems course as a basis for student projects. The development platform is a low-cost PC running GNU/Linux, and the target system is LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT, thus keeping the cost of the laboratory low. Real-time control software is developed using a mixed paradigm. Functional code for control algorithms is automatically generated in C from Simulink models. This code is then integrated into a concurrent, real-time software architecture based on a set of components written in Ada. This approach enables the students to take advantage of the high-level, model-oriented features that Simulink oers for designing control algorithms, and the comprehensive support for concurrency and real-time constructs provided by Ada.
