Ruostumattomien terästen hinta on kasvanut maailman laajuisen kysynnän kasvun seurauksena. Samoin on käynyt myös ruostumattomien terästen valmistukseen käytettävien seosaineiden hinnalle. Terästen valmistajat ovatkin kehittäneet lean duplex teräksiä vastatakseen hintatietoisten markkinoiden kysyntään. Näissä lean duplex teräksissä kalliita seosaineita kuten nikkeliä ja molybdeenia on korvattu typellä ja mangaanilla. Houkutteleviksi vaihtoehdoiksi perinteisille ruostumattomille teräksille lean duplex laadut tekee myös niiden hyvät lujuus- ja korroosio-ominaisuudet. Kirjallisuus osio esittelee lasereiden toimintaperiaatteen. Myös avaimenreikähitsauksen periaate on esitetty. Ruostumattomien terästen yleisimmät seosaineet ovat esitelty, kuten myös syy niiden seostamiseen. Ruostumattomat duplex-teräkset on esitelty samoin kuin lean duplex teräkset. Kokeellisen osion koehitsit hitsattiin osin samalla tuotantolinjalla lopputuotteen kanssa ja osin laboratoriossa. Koemateriaaleina olivat lean duplex teräkset 1.4162 ja 1.4362 joiden materiaalipaksuudet olivat 1.2 mm ja 1.5 mm. Hitsatuille lamelleille tehtiin painetestaus. Makroskopiaa ja valomikroskopiaa käytettiin koehitsien arvioinnissa kuten myös ristivetokoetta. Kiinnostavimmista hitseistä määritettiin myös faasisuhde. Lean duplex teräs 1.4362 havaittiin sopivammaksi laaduksi tämän kaltaisessa sovelluksessa, mutta myös laatu 1.4162 täyttää sovelluksen hitsille asetetut vaatimukset, tosin huomattavasti pienemmässä parametri ikkunassa. Valittu menetelmä faasisuhteen määrittämiseen osoittautui epätarkaksi, joten faasisuhteen osalta tämän tutkimuksen tulokset ovat vain suuntaa-antavia.

Viime vuosien aikana tapahtunut nikkelin hinnan nouseminen on vaikuttanut austeniittis-ferriittisten ruostumattomien terästen, ns. duplex -terästen kehittämiseen. Niukkaseosteisemmissa lean duplex -teräksissä seostetun nikkelin määrää on vähennetty ja sitä on korvattu typellä ja mangaanilla. Nämä muutokset ko. terästen seostuksessa aiheuttavat haasteita hitsaukselle, erityisesti austeniitti-ferriitti -suhteen säilyttämisessä, sekä sitä kautta iskusitkeyden ja korroosio-ominaisuuksien säilyttämiselle. Suurempi typen osuus myös lisää teräksen hitsisulan viskositeettia, mikä heikentää juuripalkojen hitsauksessa tunkeumaa. Tässsä diplomityössä on tutkittu keinoja helpottaa paksujen (yli 20 mm) lean duplex -teräslevyjen hitsausta käytännön näkökulmasta, sekä parantaa hitsattujen levyjen iskusitkeyttä. Hitsauskokeilla löydettiin hitsausta helpottavia menetelmiä ja kokeista saatiin karsimalla valikoitua hitsausarvot, joilla pystytään hitsaamaan painelaitedirektiivin mukaisesti hyväksyttäviä hitsejä lean duplex -laatuihin LDX2101 ja UR2202.

Two simulative test methods were used to study galling in sheet forming of two types of stainlesssteel sheet: austenitic (EN 1.4301) and lean duplex LDX 2101 (EN 1.4162) in different surface conditions. Thepin-on-disc test was used to analyse the galling resistance of different combinations of sheet materials and lubricants. The strip reduction test, a severe sheet forming tribology test was used to simulate the conditionsduring ironing. This investigation shows that the risk of galling is highly dependent on the surface texture of theduplex steel. Trials were also performed in an industrial tool used for high volume production of pumpcomponents, to compare forming of LDX 2101 and austenitic stainless steel with equal thickness. The forming forces, the geometry and the strains in the sheet material were compared for the same component.It was found that LDX steels can be formed to high strain levels in tools normally applied for forming ofaustenitic steels, but tool adaptations are needed to comply with the higher strength and springback of thematerial.

Growing demand for stainless steel construction materials has increased the popularity of substitutive materials for austenitic stainless steels. The lean duplex grades have taken their place in building of structures exposed to corrosive environments. Since the duplex grades are relatively new materials, the current codes and norms do not fully cover the newest duplex grades. The joints tested in this thesis were designed and studied according to Eurocode 3, even though all the materials are not yet accepted to the standards. The main objective in this thesis was to determine the differences of the used materials in behaviour under loading at low temperatures. Tests in which the deformation and strength properties of the joints were determined were done at the temperature of -46°C, which is the requirement of temperature for structures designed according to Norsok standards. Results show that replacing the austenitic grade with the lean duplex grade is acceptable.

Diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää mangaaniseosteisen LDX2101 duplex-teräksen ja LDX2101 hitsauslisäaineiden hitsausparametrit puikkohitsaus-, MAG-täytelankahitsaus- ja plasmahitsausprosessilla. Toisena tavoitteena oli selvittää lämmöntuonnin vaikutuksia hit-sausliitosten mekaanisiin ominaisuuksiin, iskusitkeyteen (-40 °C) ja ferriitti- / austeniittipitoi-suuksien jakaantumiseen. Tutkittavat hitsit olivat päittäishitsejä ja koelevyjen aineenpaksuus oli 6 mm. Koetulosten perusteella tehtiin hitsausohjeet kyseisille hitsausprosesseille. Työn kirjallisessa osassa on selvitetty yleisesti duplex-terästen käyttökohteita, mekaanisia ja kemiallisia ominaisuuksia sekä duplex-terästen korroosio-ominaisuuksia. Lisäksi on käsitelty eri hitsausprosesseja ja duplex-terästen hitsattavuutta, jossa selvitetään mm. terästen jähmet-tymistä, erkaumia ja faaseja, lämmöntuonnin vaikutuksia ja hitsausliitosten korroosionkestä-vyyttä. Teoriaosassa on kerrottu myös hitsausliitosten tarkastuksesta ja hitsiluokista. Työn kokeellisessa osassa esitellään kokeiden suoritus sekä ainetta rikkova ja ainetta rikko-maton tarkastus. Liitoksille suoritettava koestusohjelma noudatti pääosin menetelmäkoestan-dardin SFS-EN 15614-1 ohjetta. Hitseille tehtiin ainetta rikkomaton tarkastus, joka käsittää silmämääräisen tarkastuksen, pintatarkastuksen ja röntgentarkastuksen. Rikkovaa aineen-koetusta tehtiin sisältäen kovuusmittaukset, vetokokeet, taivutuskokeet jaiskusitkeyskokeet. Lisäksi valmistettiin metallografiset hieet, joita tutkimalla selvitettiin hitsausliitoksen metal-lurgiaa ja määriteltiin ferriitti- ja austeniittipitoisuudet. Kokeiden perusteella on laadittu hit-sausohjeet kullekin hitsausprosessille. Lisäksi kokeellisessa osassa on esitelty tulokset syö-pymäkokeesta, jossa selvitettiin eri materiaalien syöpymiskestävyyttä valkolipeäliuoksessa. Tutkimustuloksien perusteella LDX2102 duplex-materiaali onhyvin hitsattavaa laajalla hit-sausparametrialueella. Mekaaniset ominaisuudet, kuten lujuus- ja iskusitkeysarvot täyttävät materiaalistandardin SFS-EN10028-7 niille asettamat vaatimukset. Taivutussitkeys ja murto-venymät jäivät kuitenkin osalla koekappaleista vaatimustasoa alhaisemmiksi. Austeniitti- ja ferriittipitoisuudet vastaavat materiaalistandardin vaatimuksia.

This study focused on the method known as lean production as a work-related psychosocial risk factor in a Brazilian multinational auto parts company after its merger with other multinational companies. The authors conducted a qualitative analysis of two time points: the first using on-site observation and key interviews with managers and workers during implementation of lean production in 1996; the second, 16 years later, comparing data from a document search in labor inspection records from the Ministry of Labor and Employment and legal proceedings initiated by the Office of the Public Prosecutor for Labor Affairs. The merger led to layoffs, replacements, and an increase in the workday. A class action suit was filed on grounds of aggravated working conditions. The new production model led to psychosocial risks that increased the need for workers' health precautions when changes in the production process introduced new and increased risks of physical and mental illnesses.

Solution annealed and water quenched duplex and super duplex stainless steels are thermodynamically metastable systems at room temperature. These systems do not migrate spontaneously to a thermodynamically stable condition because an energy barrier separates the metastable and stable states. However, any heat input they receive, for example through isothermal treatment or through prolonged exposure to a voltaic arc in the welding process, cause them to reach a condition of stable equilibrium which, for super duplex stainless steels, means precipitation of intermetallic and carbide phases. These phases include the sigma phase, which is easily identified from its morphology, and its influence on the material`s impact strength. The purpose of this work was to ascertain how 2-hour isothermal heat treatments at 920 degrees C and 980 degrees C affect the microstructure of ASTM A890/A890M GR 6A super duplex stainless steel. The sigma phase morphologies were found to be influenced by these two aging temperatures, with the material showing a predominantly lacy microstructure when heat treated at 920 degrees C and block-shaped when heat treated at 980 degrees C. The machining of super duplex stainless steel castings is usually complicated by the difficulty involved in maintaining the dimensional tolerances required for given applications. Internal stresses originating from the solidification process and from subsequent heat treatments reach levels that exceed the material`s yield strength, promoting plastic strain. Stress relief heat treatments at 520 degrees C for 2 h are an interesting option to solve this problem, but because these materials present a thermodynamically metastable condition, a few precautions should be taken. The main objective of this work was to demonstrate that, after solution annealing at 1130 degrees C and water quenching, stress relief at 520 degrees C for 2 h did not alter the duplex microstructure or impair the pitting corrosion resistance of ASTM A890/A890M Grade 6A steel. This finding was confirmed by microstructural characterization techniques, including light optical and scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Corrosion potential measurements in synthetic sea water containing 20,000 ppm of chloride ions were also conducted at three temperatures: 5 degrees C, 25 degrees C and 60 degrees C. Sigma phase is a deleterious one which can be formed in duplex stainless steels during heat treatment or welding. Aiming to accompany this transformation, ferrite and sigma percentage and hardness were measured on samples of a UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel submitted to heat treatment. These results were compared to measurements obtained from ultrasound and eddy current techniques, i.e., velocity and impedance, respectively. Additionally, backscattered signals produced by wave propagation were acquired during ultrasonic inspection as well as magnetic Barkhausen noise during magnetic inspection. Both signal types were processed via a combination of detrended-fluctuation analysis (DFA) and principal component analysis (PCA). The techniques used were proven to be sensitive to changes in samples related to sigma phase formation due to heat treatment. The purpose of this paper was to study the main effects of the turning in the superficial integrity of the duplex stainless steel ASTM A890-6A. The tests were conducted on a turning centre with carbide tools and the main entrances variables were: tool material class, feed rate, cutting depth, cutting speed and cutting fluid utilisation. The answers were analysed: microstructural analysis by optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction, cutting forces measurements by a piezoelectric dynamometer, surface roughness, residual stress by x-ray diffraction technique and the microhardness measurements. The results do not show any changes in the microstructural of the material, even when the greater cutting parameters were used. The smaller feed rate (0.1 mm/v), smaller cutting speed (110 m/min) and the greater cutting depth (0.5 mm) provided the smaller values for the tensile residual stress, the smaller surface roughness and the greater microhardness.

The microstructure and texture of melt-spun UNS S31803 (DIN W. Nr. 1. 4462) duplex stainless steel were analyzed after casting and solution treatment. The cast ribbons contained austenite (gamma) and ferrite (alpha or delta) with roughly equal compositions. The alpha and gamma had < 100 > and < 110 > partial fiber textures, respectively. After solution treatment, the texture was maintained, the amount of gamma phase increased, and the alloying elements were partitioned as expected, according to whether they were ferrite or austenite stabilizers. Alpha prime formation leads to material embrittlement and deterioration of corrosion resistance. In the present study, the mechanical and corrosion behavior of super duplex stainless steel UNS S32520 aged at 475 degrees C from 0.5 h to 1,032 h was evaluated using microhardness measurements, Charpy impact tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic polarization curves. The sensibility of these tests to the effects of alpha prime phase was investigated. The microhardness test showed a gradual increase in hardness with aging time, whereas the impact tests revealed losses of about 80% in the energy absorption capacity for the material aged for 12 h in comparison with the solution-annealed samples. The most responsive analysis was the impact test, which indirectly revealed the presence of this deleterious phase in samples aged for 0.5 h. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization tests were not highly sensitive to the alpha prime phase unless these are present in large amounts in the stainless steel.
