Recolonisation of lagoon of islands, Tasmania, by Baumea Arthrophylla: the first step in regeneration of a unique ecosystem?

Lagoon of Islands was a unique ecosystem. Damming the lagoon in 1964 caused the decline of the ecosystem, destroying the original vegetation and, eventually, rendering the lagoon eutrophic. While this took place the lagoon was colonised by a macrophyte not previously noticed in the lagoon. In an effort to restore acceptable water quality, restoration of macrophyte cover was encouraged by hydrological manipulation. Recent investigations have revealed that one of the original dominant macrophyte species is recolonising the lagoon, creating an alternative management option for the lagoon.

Adaptive sizing of populations and number of islands in distributed genetic algorithms

Deciding the appropriate population size and number of is- lands for distributed island-model genetic algorithms is often critical to the algorithm’s success. This paper outlines a method that automatically searches for good combinations of island population sizes and the number of islands. The method is based on a race between competing parameter sets, and collaborative seeding of new parameter sets. This method is applicable to any problem, and makes distributed genetic algorithms easier to use by reducing the number of user-set parameters. The experimental results show that the proposed method robustly and reliably finds population and islands settings that are comparable to those found with traditional trial-and-error approaches.

Length-weight relationships of fish from the lagoon of New Caledonia

Length-weight relationships of 335 species of fish of New Caledonia, belonging to 65 families of coral reef fishes, were computed (80%) or assembled from the literature (20% of all cases) to facilitate, among other things, estimation of coral reef fish biomass from visual census.

Present status and future scope of fisheries in the Andaman group of islands

The coastal area of approximately 2000 km and the water-bodies in between the Andaman and Nicobar islands are rich in fishery potential which range from 0.012-0.47 million tonnes. The fishery is dominated by catches of sardines, perches, carangids, mackerels, Leiognathus elasmobranchs, seerfish, mullets and tunas. About 2050 fishermen, with 1150 country craft, 113 mechanised boats and 1367 different kinds of nets and lines are engaged in active fishing in the island. Numerous bays, lagoons and creeks are available among the group of islands for mariculture activities. The mangroves of these islands provide feeding and nursery grounds for juveniles of penaeid prawns, crabs and finfishes.
