Jockeys are required to maintain very low body weight and precise weight control during competition. This study examined the weight loss and weight management strategies of professional horseracing jockeys in the state of Victoria, Australia. An anonymous, self-completed questionnaire was administered (55 % response rate, n = 116). Almost half (43 %) reported that maintaining riding weight was difficult or very difficult, with 75 % routinely skipping meals. In preparation for racing, 60 % reported that they typically required additional weight loss, with 81 % restricting food intake in the 24 hours prior to racing. Additionally, sauna-induced sweating (29 %) and diuretics (22 %) were frequently employed to further aid in weight loss prior to racing. These rapid weight loss methods did not differ between the 51 % of jockeys who followed a weight management plan compared to those who did not. The impact of these extreme weight loss practices on riding performance and health remains unknown.

This thesis argues that inclusion of women jockeys at the elite level was enabled by the equal opportunity legislation when it was first enacted but the legislation has failed to live up to its' initial promise. Cultural barriers continue to inform and authorise unfair work practices.

Electronic dance music (EDM) has the capacity of producing not simply individual recordings but also a medium to create new soundtracks through live manipulation of these recordings by disc jockeys (DJs). This immediacy in dance music is in contrast with recorded rock music continuing to be presented in a static form. Research was undertaken to explore the proposition that EDM’s beat-mixing function can be implemented to create immediacy in rock music. The term used in this thesis to refer to the application of beat-mixing in rock music is ‘ClubRock’. Through collaboration between a number of disk jockeys and rock music professionals the research applied the process of beat-mixing standard rock compositions to produce a continuous rock set. DJ techniques created immediacy in the recordings and transformed static renditions into a fluid creative work.

Workplace practices form an overarching social determinant of health for Victorian jockeys and their families. This research highlights the importance of riding opportunity, coping with risk and danger, and the gratification associated with the lifestyle to be key characteristics that impact on jockey family health for the better or worse.
