The package inserts for drugs represent the main source of written information provided to patients, but the deficiency in the page layouts of informational texts (readability), the excess of information and use of techno-scientific language hamper the effectiveness of communication between the author (manufacturer) and player (patient) in addition to the physiological conditions of patients are often elderly. This article discusses these issues from theoretical predictions, and proposes solutions to the adequacy of information graphics package inserts of drugs and facilitating the identification of drug cards.

El Niño South Oscillation (ENSO) is one climatic phenomenon related to the inter-annual variability of global meteorological patterns influencing sea surface temperature and rainfall variability. It influences human health indirectly through extreme temperature and moisture conditions that may accelerate the spread of some vector-borne viral diseases, like dengue fever (DF). This work examines the spatial distribution of association between ENSO and DF in the countries of the Americas during 1995-2004, which includes the 1997-1998 El Niño, one of the most important climatic events of 20(th) century. Data regarding the South Oscillation index (SOI), indicating El Niño-La Niña activity, were obtained from Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The annual DF incidence (AIy) by country was computed using Pan-American Health Association data. SOI and AIy values were standardised as deviations from the mean and plotted in bars-line graphics. The regression coefficient values between SOI and AIy (rSOI,AI) were calculated and spatially interpolated by an inverse distance weighted algorithm. The results indicate that among the five years registering high number of cases (1998, 2002, 2001, 2003 and 1997), four had El Niño activity. In the southern hemisphere, the annual spatial weighted mean centre of epidemics moved southward, from 6° 31' S in 1995 to 21° 12' S in 1999 and the rSOI,AI values were negative in Cuba, Belize, Guyana and Costa Rica, indicating a synchrony between higher DF incidence rates and a higher El Niño activity. The rSOI,AI map allows visualisation of a graded surface with higher values of ENSO-DF associations for Mexico, Central America, northern Caribbean islands and the extreme north-northwest of South America.

The purpose of this project was to identify in a subject group of engineers and technicians (N = 62) a preferred mode of representation for facilitating correct recall of information from complex graphics. The modes of representation were black and white (b&w) block, b&w icon, color block, and color icon. The researcher's test instrument included twelve complex graphics (six b&w and six color - three per mode). Each graphics presentation was followed by two multiple-choice questions. Recall performance was better using b&w block mode graphics and color icon mode graphics. A standardized test, the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) was used to identify a cognitive style preference (field dependence). Although engineers and technicians in the sample were strongly field-independent, they were not significantly more field-independent than the normative group in the Witkin, Oltman, Raskin, and Karp study (1971). Tests were also employed to look for any significant difference in cognitive style preference due to gender. None was found. Implications from the project results for the design of visuals and their use in technical training are discussed.

The thesis introduced the octree and addressed the complete nature of problems encountered, while building and imaging system based on octrees. An efficient Bottom-up recursive algorithm and its iterative counterpart for the raster to octree conversion of CAT scan slices, to improve the speed of generating the octree from the slices, the possibility of utilizing the inherent parallesism in the conversion programme is explored in this thesis. The octree node, which stores the volume information in cube often stores the average density information could lead to “patchy”distribution of density during the image reconstruction. In an attempt to alleviate this problem and explored the possibility of using VQ to represent the imformation contained within a cube. Considering the ease of accommodating the process of compressing the information during the generation of octrees from CAT scan slices, proposed use of wavelet transforms to generate the compressed information in a cube. The modified algorithm for generating octrees from the slices is shown to accommodate the eavelet compression easily. Rendering the stored information in the form of octree is a complex task, necessarily because of the requirement to display the volumetric information. The reys traced from each cube in the octree, sum up the density en-route, accounting for the opacities and transparencies produced due to variations in density.

In this paper, we present view-dependent information theory quality measures for pixel sampling and scene discretization in flatland. The measures are based on a definition for the mutual information of a line, and have a purely geometrical basis. Several algorithms exploiting them are presented and compare well with an existing one based on depth differences

This paper describes and analyses the experience of designing, installing and evaluating a farmer-usable touch screen information kiosk on cattle health in a veterinary institution in Pondicherry. The contents of the kiosk were prepared based on identified demands for information on cattle health, arrived at through various stakeholders meetings. Information on these cattle diseases and conditions affecting the livelihoods of the poor was provided through graphics, text and audio back-up, keeping in mind the needs of landless and illiterate poor cattle owners. A methodology for kiosk evaluation based on the feedback obtained from kiosk facilitator, critical group reflection and individual users was formulated. The formative evaluation reveals the potential strength this ICT has in transferring information to the cattle owners in a service delivery centre. Such information is vital in preventing diseases and helps cattle owners to present and treat their animals at an early stage of disease condition. This in turn helps prevent direct and indirect losses to the cattle owners. The study reveals how an information kiosk installed at a government institution as a freely accessible source of information to all farmers irrespective of their class and caste can help in transfer of information among poor cattle owners, provided periodic updating, interactivity and communication variability are taken care of. Being in the veterinary centre, the kiosk helps stimulate dialogue, and facilitates demand of services based on the information provided by the kiosk screens.

In this work, we propose a Geographical Information System that can be used as a tool for the treatment and study of problems related with environmental and city management issues. It is based on the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) standard for Web development of graphics. The project uses the concept of remate and real-time mar creation by database access through instructions executed by browsers on the Internet. As a way of proving the system effectiveness, we present two study cases;.the first on a region named Maracajaú Coral Reefs, located in Rio Grande do Norte coast, and the second in the Switzerland Northeast in which we intended to promote the substitution of MapServer by the system proposed here. We also show some results that demonstrate the larger geographical data capability achieved by the use of the standardized codes and open source tools, such as Extensible Markup Language (XML), Document Object Model (DOM), script languages ECMAScript/ JavaScript, Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) and PostgreSQL and its extension, PostGIS

Tensor3D is a geometric modeling program with the capacity to simulate and visualize in real-time the deformation, specified through a tensor matrix and applied to triangulated models representing geological bodies. 3D visualization allows the study of deformational processes that are traditionally conducted in 2D, such as simple and pure shears. Besides geometric objects that are immediately available in the program window, the program can read other models from disk, thus being able to import objects created with different open-source or proprietary programs. A strain ellipsoid and a bounding box are simultaneously shown and instantly deformed with the main object. The principal axes of strain are visualized as well to provide graphical information about the orientation of the tensor's normal components. The deformed models can also be saved, retrieved later and deformed again, in order to study different steps of progressive strain, or to make this data available to other programs. The shape of stress ellipsoids and the corresponding Mohr circles defined by any stress tensor can also be represented. The application was written using the Visualization ToolKit, a powerful scientific visualization library in the public domain. This development choice, allied to the use of the Tcl/Tk programming language, which is independent on the host computational platform, makes the program a useful tool for the study of geometric deformations directly in three dimensions in teaching as well as research activities. This paper aims to describe the basic concepts and necessary for Java programs can invoke libraries of programming language C/C ++, through the JNA API. We used a library developed in C/C ++ called Glass [8], which offers a solution for viewing 3D graphics, using graphics clusters, reducing the cost of viewing. The purpose of the work is to interact with the humanoid developed using Java, which makes movements of LIBRAS language for the deaf, as Glass's, so that through this they can view the information using stereoscopic multi-view in full size. ©2010 IEEE.
