This paper aims to present the results of systematic survey on clastic dykes in the Corumbataí Formation (Permian), in the northeast region of the State of São Paulo. Besides this, the paper analyses genetic aspects of those features as well as their stratigraphic and sedimentologic implications in terms of geologic evolution of the northeastern Paraná Sedimentary Basin during Permian times. The field works had been developed in 3 main Corumbataí Formation outcrops (2 road cuts and a quarry) supposed to show the most important clastic dikes occurrences in the studied area. Basically, the sedimentary intrusions are formed by fine sand or silt size particles and had penetrated host rocks as near-vertical, centimeter thick, dykes (most common form) or as horizontal sheets, forming clastic sills (subsidiary form), both with variable geometric forms and dimensions. A lot of dyke walls show undulations suggesting pre-diagenetic clastic intrusions, probably near the ancient depositional surface. Almost all intrusions occur in the superior third portion of the Corumbataí Formation and some similar features seem to appear in the adjoining superposed Pirambóia Formation base. In this article the authors defend a seismic origin hypothesis for the clastic intrusions. It is important to mention that clastic intrusions tend to occur linked to expressive seismic events, with magnitude upper to 5. The analysis of isopach maps of the Permian and Mesozoic units of the Paraná Sedimentary Basin in the study area suggests a depositional system changing, from epicontinental sea conditions to shallow platform and, finally, to coastal deserts. Probably, this environmental change was driven by regional uplift accompanied by seismic events. It is possible that ancient seismicity triggered liquefaction processes and the resulting clastic intrusions. In this sense, those clastic features might be properly namedseismites.

The Rio Apa Massif corresponds to the southeastern portion of the Amazonian Craton and crops out in the Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. It is constituted by rocks of paleoproterozoic age of Rio Apa Complex, Alto Tererê Group and the plutonic-volcanic suites of the Amoguijá Group, subdivided in Alumiador Intrusive suits and Serra da Bocaina Volcanic. The Volcanic Suite is represented by São Francisco and Bocaina mountains and is constituted by terms of the composition of alkali - rhyolitic to rhyolitic, including in minor amounts riodacite, andesite and dacite. It consists of a variety of textual subvolcanic rocks, volcanic and varied volcanoclastics. The pyroclastic deposits are very expressive and consist of pyroclastic particle immerse in aphanitic matrix, fine grained or amorphous, where quartz, feldspar, chlorite, sericite, microlithes of carbonate, sparse spherulites and reliquiar volcanic glass can be distinguished. The pyroclastic rocks are represented by breccias, ignimbrites, agglomerate, tuffs, lapillistones and pumices and contain commonly vitroclasts, lithoclasts and crystalloclasts, pumices, fiammes, glass shards, spherulites, vesicles and amygdales. They are calc-alkaline rocks with dominant peraluminous character high to middle potassium series and define a sin-colisional dominant tectonic and are genetically associated to the evolution of the Amoguijá Magmatic Arc.

Mineralogical and oxygen isotopic analyses of samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 477, 481, and 477 in the Guaymas Basin indicate the existence of two distinct hydrothermal systems. In the first, at Sites 481 and 478, hot dolerite sills intruded into highly porous hemipelagic siliceous mudstones that were moderately rich in organic matter, thermally altered the adjacent sediments, and expelled hydrothermal pore fluids. The second, at Site 477 and active at present, is most probably caused by a recent igneous intrusion forming a magma chamber at shallow depth. In the first hydrothermal system, the main thermal reactions above and below the sills are dissolution of opal-A and formation of quartz, either directly or through opal-CT; formation of smectite; formation of analcime only above the sills; dissolution and recrystallization of calcite and occasional formation of dolomite or protodolomite. The d18O values of the hydrothermally altered sediments range from 9.9 to 12.2 per mil (SMOW). The d18O values of recrystallized calcites above the first sill complex, Site 481, indicate temperatures of 140° to 170°C. No fluid recharge is required in this system. The thickness of the sill complexes and the sequence and depth of intrusion into the sediment column determine the thickness of the alteration zones, which ranges from 2 or 3 to approximately 50 meters. Generally, the hydrothermally altered zone is thicker above than below the sill. In the second type, the sediments are extensively recrystallized. The characteristic greenschist-facies mineral assemblage of quartz-albite-chlorite-epidote predominates. Considerable amounts of pyrite, pyrrhotite, and sphene are also present. The lowest d18O value of the greenschist facies rocks is 6.6 per mil, and the highest d18O value of the associated pore fluids is +1.38 per mil (SMOW). The paragenesis and the oxygen isotopes of individual phases indicate alteration temperatures of 300 ± 50°C. On the basis of the oxygen isotopes of the solids and associated fluids, it is concluded that recharge of fluids is required. The water/rock ratio in wt.% is moderate, approximately 2/1 to 3/1 - higher than the calculated water/rock ratio of the hydrothermal system at the East Pacific Rise, 21 °N.

Li contents [Li] and isotopic composition (delta Li-7) of mafic minerals (mainly amphibole and clinopyroxene) from the alkaline to peralkaline Ilimaussaq plutonic complex, South Greenland, track the behavior of Li and its isotopes during magmatic differentiation and final cooling of an alkaline igneous system. [Li] in amphibole increase from < 10 ppm in Caamphiboles of the least differentiated unit to >3000 ppm in Na-amphiboles of the highly evolved units. In contrast, [Li] in clinopyroxene are comparatively low (<85 ppm) and do not vary systematically with differentiation. The distribution of Li between amphibole and pyroxene is controlled by the major element composition of the minerals (Ca-rich and Na-rich, respectively) and changes in oxygen fugacity (due to Li incorporation via coupled substitution with ferric iron) during magmatic differentiation. delta(7) Li values of all minerals span a wide range from + 17 to - 8 parts per thousand, with the different intrusive units of the complex having distinct Li isotopic systematics. Amphiboles, which dominate the Li budget of whole-rocks from the inner part of the complex, have constant delta Li-7 of + 1.8 +/- 2.2 parts per thousand (2 sigma, n = 15). This value reflects a homogeneous melt reservoir and is consistent with their mantle derivation, in agreement with published O and Nd isotopic data. Clinopyroxenes of these samples are consistently lighter, with Delta Li-7(amph-cpx). as large as 8 parts per thousand and are thus not in Li isotope equilibrium. These low values probably reflect late-stage diffusion of Li into clinopyroxene during final cooling of the rocks, thus enriching the clinopyroxene in 6 Li. At the margin of the complex delta(7) Li in the syenites increases systematically, from +2 to high values of + 14 parts per thousand. This, coupled with the observed Li isotope systematics of the granitic country rocks, reflects post-magmatic open-system processes occurring during final cooling of the intrusion. Although the shape and magnitude of the Li isotope and elemental profiles through syenite and country rock are suggestive of diffusion-driven isotope fractionation, they cannot be modeled by one-dimensional diffusive transport and point to circulation of a fluid having a high 67 Li value (possibly seawater) along the chilled contact. In all, this study demonstrates that Li isotopes can be used to identify complex fluid- and diffusion-governed processes taking place during the final cooling of such rocks. Relatively homogeneous oxygen isotope compositions of amphibole, clinopyroxene, and olivine separates (+5.2 to +5.7parts per thousand relative to VSMOW) and neodymium isotope compositions (epsilon(Nd(T)) = -0.9 to -1.8 for primary magmatic minerals and epsilon(Nd(T)) = -0.1 and -0.5 for mineral separates from late-stage pegmatites and hydrothermal veins) from the alkaline to agpaitic llimaussaq intrusion, South Greenland, indicate a closed system evolution of this igneous complex and support a mantle derivation of the magma. In contrast to the homogeneous oxygen and neodymium isotopic data, deltaD values for hand-picked amphibole separates vary between -92 and -232parts per thousand and are among the most deuterium-depleted values known from igneous amphiboles. The calculated fluid phase coexisting with these amphiboles has a homogeneous oxygen isotopic composition within the normal range of magmatic waters, but extremely heterogeneous and low D/H ratios, implying a decoupling of the oxygen- and hydrogen isotope systems. Of the several possibilities that can account for such unusually low deltaD values in amphiboles (e.g., late-stage hydrothermal exchange with meteoric water, extensive magmatic degassing, contamination with organic matter, and/or effects of Fe-content and pressure on amphibole-water fractionation) the most likely explanation for the range in deltaD values is that the amphiboles have been influenced by secondary interaction and reequilibration with D-depleted fluids obtained through late-magmatic oxidation of internally generated CH(4) and/or H(2). This interpretation is consistent with the known occurrence of abundant magmatic CH(4) in the Ilimaussaq rocks and with previous studies on the isotopic compositions of the rocks and fluids. THESIS ABSTRACT Major element and stable isotope compositions of amphiboles were analyzed from a number of alkaline and peralkaline igneous complexes in order to determine the importance of compositional variations in minerals to hydrogen isotope fractionations in natural mineral-melt-fluid systems. The thesis mainly focuses on nepheline syenites of well-studied, but chemically variable alkaline intrusive rocks, from which amphiboles and, if possible, other hydrous silicates such as micas and eudialytes were separated. The system of primary interest was the alkaline Ilímaussaq Complex of the Gardar Province of South Greenland. For the purpose of comparison additional samples were collected and examined from the Tugtutôq Complex (South Greenland), the Khibina and Lovozero Complexes (Kola Peninsular, Russia), Mount St-Hilaire and Mount Royal (Canada) and six further complexes from NW Namibia (Cape Cross, Okenyenya, Messum, Etaneno, Kalkfeld, and Okorusu). The hydrogen isotope compositions of amphiboles from the localities studied differ greatly, which is atypical for amphiboles from mantle, range between - 227 and - 700/00 (latter compatible with a simple mantle origin). As this wide range in compositions and the extreme depletion in the heavy hydrogen isotope (D) content relative to other igneous rocks appear to be unique to alkaline to peralkaline rocks of this type, a common process is indicated. The different alkaline complexes chosen cover a wide range of amphibole chemical compositions. Detailed chemical characterization of amphiboles by electron microprobe and Mössbauer spectroscopy analyses helped to constrain the control of Fe on the H-isotope fractionations. Complete characterization of the chemical compositions of the amphiboles support Fe-control on fractionations and at least for the peralkaline Ilímaussaq complex a relationship between Fe3+/FeT ratios and variations in D/H. The studied complexes differ in their agpaitic index (Na+K/Al) and also in their Fe-content. The most iron (27-35 wt. %) and alkaline element rich amphiboles, with the lowermost D/H ratio, as well with very wide range, are the ones from Ilímaussaq complex. Similar, but less D depleted amphiboles are from the Kola Peninsula and the Canadian localities. The complexes described from NW Namibia have amphiboles with normal magmatic hydrogen isotope composition (-730/00 to -1000/00), and have less Fe-content (15-17 wt. %), and are more Ca-and less Na-rich. In this case alkalinity is not that important in comparison to the other studied complexes. Beside the alkaline element contents in the amphiboles, the alkalinity of the fluids has been found to be an important factor, in conjunction with earlier suggestions from experimental systems. To further constrain this factor, hydrothermal exchange experiments between amphiboles and fluids of different salinity simulating natural conditions were performed. The approach of examining natural amphiboles from alkaline igneous complexes in parallel to performing exchange experiments - helped to further constrain the factors controlling the H-isotope fractionations in alkaline rocks. The observed changes between the hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions of amphiboles and fluids before and after the experiments suggest that another phase was produced during the experiments, which influenced the final hydrogen isotope composition of the system. This presumably hydrous phase has also influenced the Fe3 +/Fe2+ ratio of the amphiboles, which became more oxidized. The extremely low SD values of amphiboles in these alkaline complexes may be due to a combination of different factors such as high alkalinity, high Fe-content, and shallow intrusion depths. This wide range and the low SD values of the amphiboles studied might be a result of internal, magmatic processes and it is unlikely that meteoric water was involved and/or magmatic degassing played an important role.

Low pressure partial melting of basanitic and ankaramitic dykes gave rise to unusual, zebra-like migmatites, in the contact aureole of a layered pyroxenite-gabbro intrusion, in the root zone of an ocean island (Basal Complex, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands). These migmatites are characterised by a dense network of closely spaced, millimetre-wide leucocratic segregations. Their mineralogy consists of plagioclase (An(32-36)), diopside, biotite, oxides (magnetite, ilmenite), +/-amphibole, dominated by plagioclase in the leucosome and diopside in the melanosome. The melanosome is almost completely recrystallised, with the preservation of large, relict igneous diopside phenocrysts in dyke centres. Comparison of whole-rock and mineral major- and trace-element data allowed us to assess the redistribution of elements between different mineral phases and generations during contact metamorphism and partial melting. Dykes within and outside the thermal aureole behaved like closed chemical systems. Nevertheless, Zr, Hf, Y and REEs were internally redistributed, as deduced by comparing the trace element contents of the various diopside generations. Neocrystallised diopside - in the melanosome, leucosome and as epitaxial phenocryst rims - from the migmatite zone, are all enriched in Zr, Hf, Y and REEs compared to relict phenocrysts. This has been assigned to the liberation of trace elements on the breakdown of enriched primary minerals, kaersutite and sphene, on entering the thermal aureole. Major and trace element compositions of minerals in migmatite melanosomes and leucosomes are almost identical, pointing to a syn- or post-solidus reequilibration on the cooling of the migmatite terrain i.e. mineral-melt equilibria were reset to mineral-mineral equilibria. The Patino Formation sandstones, which crop out in Aregua neighborhood in Eastern Paraguay and show columnar joints near the contact zone with a nephelinite dyke, have as their main characteristics the high proportion of syntaxial quartz overgrowth and a porosity originated from different processes, initially by dissolution and later by partial filling and fracturing. Features like the presence of floating grains in the syntaxial cement, the transitional interpenetrative contact between the silica-rich cement and grains as well as the intense fracture porosity are strong indications that the cement has been formed by dissolution and reprecipitation of quartz from the framework under the effect of thermal expansion followed by rapid contraction. The increase of the silica-rich cement towards the dyke in association with the orthogonal disposition of the columns relative to dyke walls are indicative that the igneous body may represent the main heat source for the interstitial aqueous solutions previously existing in the sediments. At macroscopic scale, the increasing of internal tensions in the sandstones is responsible for the nucleation of polygons, leading to the individualization of prisms, which are interconnected by a system of joints, formed firstly on isotherm surfaces of low temperature and later on successive adjacent planes towards the dyke heat source.

A variety of platinum-group-minerals (PGM) have been found to occur associated with the chromitite and dunite layers in the Niquelandia igneous complex. Two genetically distinct populations of PGM have been identified corresponding to phases crystallized at high temperatures (primary), and others formed or modified during post-magmatic serpentinization and lateritic weathering (secondary). Primary PGM have been found in moderately serpentinized chromitite and dunite, usually included in fresh chromite grains or partially oxidized interstitial sulfides. Due to topographically controlled lateritic weathering, the silicate rocks are totally transformed to a smectite-kaolinite-garnierite-amorphous silica assemblage, while the chromite is changed into a massive aggregate of a spinel phase having low-Mg and a low Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio, intimately associated with Ti-minerals, amorphous Fe-hydroxides, goethite, hematite and magnetite. The PGM in part survive alteration, and in part are corroded as a result of deep chemical weathering. Laurite is altered to Ru-oxides or re-crystallizes together with secondary Mg-ilmenite. Other PGM, especially the Pt-Fe alloys, re-precipitate within the altered chromite together with kaolinite and Fe-hydroxides. Textural evidence suggests that re-deposition of secondary PGM took place during chromite alteration, controlled by variation of the redox conditions on a microscopic scale.

The Niquelandia Complex, Brazil, is one of the world's largest mafic-ultramafic plutonic complexes. Like the Mafic Complex of the Ivrea-Verbano Zone, it is affected by a pervasive high-T foliation and shows hypersolidus deformation structures, contains significant inclusions of country-rock paragneiss, and is subdivided into a Lower and an Upper Complex. In this paper, we present new SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages that provide compelling evidence that the Upper and the Lower Niquelandia Complexes formed during the same igneous event at ca. 790 Ma. Coexistence of syn-magmatic and high-T subsolidus deformation structures indicates that both complexes grew incrementally as large crystal mush bodies which were continuously stretched while fed by pulses of fresh magma. Syn-magmatic recrystallization during this deformation resulted in textures and structures which, although appearing metamorphic, are not ascribable to post-magmatic metamorphic event(s), but are instead characteristic of the growth process in huge and deep mafic intrusions such as both the Niquelandia and Ivrea Complexes. Melting of incorporated country-rock paragneiss continued producing hybrid rocks during the last, vanishing stages of magmatic crystallization. This resulted in the formation of minor, late-stage hybrid rocks, whose presence obscures the record of the main processes of interaction between mantle magmas and crustal components, which may be active at the peak of the igneous events and lead to the generation of eruptible hybrid magmas. One of the key for the understanding of an orogenic belt is the characterization of the terranes involved and the identification of the suture(s) separating crustal blocks: these are essential information for large-scale paleo-reconstructions. In addition, the structural relationships between the terranes involved in the collisional processes and the eventual UHP relicts may provide first order inputs to exhumation models of subducted rocks. The structure of the Rhodope Massif (northern Greece and southern Bulgaria) results from the stacking of high-grade nappes during a continental collision, which age is comprised between Latest-Jurassic and Early-Cenozoic. UHP and HP relicts, associated with oceanic and ultramafic material, suggest the presence of a dismembered suture zone within the massif. The location of this suture remains unclear; furthermore, up to now, the UHP and eclogitic localities represent isolated spots and no synthesis on their structural position within the massif has been proposed. The first aim of this work is to define the relationships between HP-UHP relicts, crustal blocks, shear zones and amphibolitic material. To achieve this objective, we characterized the accreted blocks in terms of protoliths ages of the orthogneisses mainly along two cross sections on the Greek part of the belt. Geochemical affinities of meta-igneous rocks served as a complementary tool for terrane characterization and geodynamic interpretation. Single-zircon Pb-Pb evaporation and zircon U-Pb SHRIMP dating of orthogneiss protoliths define two groups of intrusion-ages: Permo-Carboniferous and Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous. Structurally, these two groups correspond to distinct units: the Late Jurassic gneissic complex overthrusts the one bearing the Permo-Carboniferous orthogneisses. Mylonites, eclogites, amphibolites of oceanic affinities, and UHP micaschists, mark a “melange” zone, intensively sheared towards the SW, which separates the two units. Thus, we interpret them as two distinct terranes, the Rhodope and Thracia terranes, separated by the Nestos suture. The correlation of our findings in northern Greece to the Bulgarian part of the Massif suggests a northern rooting of the Nestos Suture. This configuration results of the closure of a marginal oceanic basin of the Tethys system by a north-directed subduction. This interpretation is supported by the geochemical affinities of the orthogneisses: the Late-Jurassic igneous rocks formed by subduction-related magmatism, pprobably the same north-directed subduction that gave rise to the UHP metamorphism of the metasediments of the “melange” zone. It is noteworthy that the UHP-HP relicts seem to be restricted to the contact between the two terranes suggesting that the UHP relicts are exhumed only within the suture zone. Furthermore, the singularity of the suture suggests that the Late-Jurassic subduction explains the occurrence of UHP and eclogite relicts in the Central Rhodope despite the large age range previously attributed the UHP and/or HP stage.

The late Carboniferous to Permian is a critical period for final amalgamation of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which is characterized by voluminous igneous rocks, particularly granitoids. The Kekesai composite granitoid porphyry intrusion, situated in the Chinese western Tianshan (southwest part of CAOB) includes two intrusive phases, a monzogranite phase, intruded by a granodiorite phase. LA-ICPMS U-Pb zircon analyses suggest that the monzogranitic rocks formed at 305.5±1.1 Ma, with a wide age range of inherited zircons (358-488 Ma and 1208-1391 Ma), whereas the granodioritic rocks formed at 288.7±1.5 Ma. The monzogranitic and granodioritic phases have similar geochemical features and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic compositions. They exhibit high and variable SiO2 (66-71 wt.%) and MgO (0.41-2.14 wt.%) contents with some arc-like geochemical characteristics (e.g., enrichment of large ion lithophile elements and negative anomalies of Nb, Ta and Ti) and relatively high initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (ISr=0.7055-0.7059), low positive eNd(t) (+0.84 to +1.03) as well as a large variation in Hf isotopic compositions with eHf(t) between +3.43 to +14.8, implying both of them were derived from similar source materials. These geochemical characteristics suggest that they might be mainly derived from the partial melting of arc-derived Mesoproterozoic mafic lower crust with involvement of a mantle-derived component in variable proportions by mantle-derived magma underplating. The presence of late-Ordovician to earliest early Carboniferous inherited zircons and the Hf isotopic compositions in the monzogranitic sample, similar to that of the widespread juvenile arc rocks, indicates some crust contamination during magma emplacement. Our new data, combined with previous studies, imply that extensive post-collisional magmatism due to underplating of mantle-derived magma, could plausibly be explained by slab break-off regime.

A paleomagnetic study was made of 12 samples of trachytic basalt from the base of ODP Hole 698A on the Northeast Georgia Rise (southwest Atlantic) and four samples of andesitic basalt and nine samples of volcanic breccia from the base of ODP Hole 703A on the Meteor Rise (southeast Atlantic). The magnetic intensities of the Hole 703A samples are anomalously low, possibly reflecting alteration effects. The mean magnetic intensity of the Hole 698A samples is high, and compatible with the model of Bleil and Petersen (1983) for the variation of magnetic intensity with age in oceanic basalts, involving progressive low-temperature oxidation of titanomagnetite to titanomaghemite for some 20 m.y. followed by inversion to intergrowths of magnetite and other Fe-Ti oxides during the subsequent 100 m.y. These results support the interpretation of the Hole 698A basalts as true oceanic basement of Late Cretaceous age rather than a younger intrusion. Well-defined stable components of magnetization were identified from AF and thermal demagnetization of the Hole 698A basalts, and less well-defined components were identified for the Hole 703A samples. Studies of the magnetic homogeneity of the Hole 698A basalts, involving harmonic analysis of the spinner magnetometer output, indicate the presence of an unevenly distributed low-coercivity component superimposed on the more homogeneous high-coercivity characteristic magnetization. The former component is believed to reside in irregularly distributed multidomain magnetite grains formed along cracks within the basalt, whilst the latter resides in more uniformly distributed finer magnetic grains. The inclination values for the high-coercivity magnetization of five Hole 698A basalt samples form an internally consistent set with a mean value of 59° ± 5°. The corresponding Late Cretaceous paleolatitude of 40° ± 5° is shallower than expected for this site but is broadly compatible with models for the opening of the South Atlantic involving pivoting of South America away from Africa since the Early Cretaceous. The polarity of the stable characteristic magnetization of the Site 698 basalts is normal. This is consistent with their emplacement during the long Campanian to Maestrichtian normal polarity Chron C33N.
