Most existing work on learning community structure in social network is graph-based whose links among the members are often represented as an adjacency matrix, encoding direct pairwise associations between members. In this paper, we propose a method to group online communities in blogosphere based on the topics learnt from the content blogged. We then consider a different type of online community formulation - the sentiment-based grouping of online communities. The problem of sentiment-based clustering for community structure discovery is rich with many interesting open aspects to be explored. We propose a novel approach for addressing hyper-community detection based on users' sentiment. We employ a nonparametric clustering to automatically discover hidden hyper-communities and present the results obtained from a large dataset.

We present a large-scale mood analysis in social media texts. We organise the paper in three parts: (1) addressing the problem of feature selection and classification of mood in blogosphere, (2) we extract global mood patterns at different level of aggregation from a large-scale data set of approximately 18 millions documents (3) and finally, we extract mood trajectory for an egocentric user and study how it can be used to detect subtle emotion signals in a user-centric manner, supporting discovery of hyper-groups of communities based on sentiment information. For mood classification, two feature sets proposed in psychology are used, showing that these features are efficient, do not require a training phase and yield classification results comparable to state of the art, supervised feature selection schemes, on mood patterns, empirical results for mood organisation in the blogosphere are provided, analogous to the structure of human emotion proposed independently in the psychology literature, and on community structure discovery, sentiment-based approach can yield useful insights into community formation.

This ethnographic study makes a number of original contributions to the consumer identity projects and the marketplace cultures dimensions of consumer culture theory research. This study introduces the notion of the brand-orientated play-community, a novel consumption community form, which displays, as locus, a desire to play. This contributes to our understanding of the fluid relationship between subcultures of consumption, consumer tribes, and brand community. It was found that the brand-orientated play-community’s prime celebration, conceptualised as the ‘branded carnival’, displays characteristics of the archetypal carnival. The community access carnivalistic life and a world-upside-down ethos via the use and misuse of marketplace resources. The branded carnival is further supported by the community’s enactment of ‘toxic play’, which entails abnormal alcohol consumption, black market illegal resources, edgework activities, hegemonic masculinity and upsetting the public. This play-community is discussed in terms of a hyper-masculine playpen, as the play enacted has a direct relationship with the enactment of strong masculine roles. It was found that male play-ground members enact the extremes of contrasting masculine roles as a means to subvert the calculated and sedate ‘man-of-action-hero’ synthesis. Carnivals are unisex, and hence, women have begun entering the play-ground. Female members have successfully renegotiated their role within the community, from playthings to players – they have achieved player equality, which within the liminoid zone is more powerful than gender equality. However, while toxic play is essential to the maintenance of collective identity within the culture so too is the more serious form of play: the toxic sport of professional beer pong. The author conceptualises beer pong as a ‘toxic sport’, as it displays the contradictory play foundations of agon and corrupt ilinx: this is understood as a milestone step in the emergence of the postmodern sport era, in which spontaneity and the carnivalesque will dominate.

Participating in a community exemplifies the aspect of sharing, networking and interacting in a social media system. There has been extensive work on characterising on-line communities by their contents and tags using topic modelling tools. However, the role of sentiment and mood has not been studied. Arguably, mood is an integral feature of a text, and becomes more significant in the context of social media: two communities might discuss precisely the same topics, yet within an entirely different atmosphere. Such sentiment-related distinctions are important for many kinds of analysis and applications, such as community recommendation. We present a novel approach to identification of latent hyper-groups in social communities based on users’ sentiment. The results show that a sentiment-based approach can yield useful insights into community formation and metacommunities, having potential applications in, for example, mental health—by targeting support or surveillance to communities with negative mood—or in marketing—by targeting customer communities having the same sentiment on similar topics.

Local news is nothing new, but there is an unmistakable hype around its reinvention in the digital age through the hyperlocal phenomena. This article applies the lens of subculture theory to move beyond questions related to who produces hyperlocal news, how to pay for it and its democratic potential, to focus on its social and cultural values and meanings. In doing so, it engages with the normative and political economy approaches that dominate this niche of journalism studies. We argue that a cultural approach can generate much-needed critical perspectives on the significance of what we term “excessively local news” and the future of mainstream journalism in this globalized world. In the process, it challenges media scholars and practitioners who cleave to traditional hierarchies of value about what hyperlocal news is and should be, even at the risk of being unfashionable in the digital age.

OBJECTIVES Resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) in Escherichia coli can be due to the production of ESBLs, plasmid-mediated AmpCs (pAmpCs) or chromosomal AmpCs (cAmpCs). Information regarding type and prevalence of β-lactamases, clonal relations and plasmids associated with the bla genes for ESC-R E. coli (ESC-R-Ec) detected in Switzerland is lacking. Moreover, data focusing on patients referred to the specialized outpatient clinics (SOCs) are needed. METHODS We analysed 611 unique E. coli isolated during September-December 2011. ESC-R-Ec were studied with microarrays, PCR/DNA sequencing for blaESBLs, blapAmpCs, promoter region of blacAmpC, IS elements, plasmid incompatibility group, and also implementing transformation, aIEF, rep-PCR and MLST. RESULTS The highest resistance rates were observed in the SOCs, whereas those in the hospital and community were lower (e.g. quinolone resistance of 22.6%, 17.2% and 9.0%, respectively; P = 0.003 for SOCs versus community). The prevalence of ESC-R-Ec in the three settings was 5.3% (n = 11), 7.8% (n = 22) and 5.7% (n = 7), respectively. Thirty isolates produced CTX-M ESBLs (14 were CTX-M-15), 5 produced CMY-2 pAmpC and 5 hyper-expressed cAmpCs due to promoter mutations. Fourteen isolates were of sequence type 131 (ST131; 10 with CTX-M-15). blaCTX-M and blaCMY-2 were associated with an intact or truncated ISEcp1 and were mainly carried by IncF, IncFII and IncI1plasmids. CONCLUSIONS ST131 producing CTX-M-15 is the predominant clone. The prevalence of ESC-R-Ec (overall 6.5%) is low, but an unusual relatively high frequency of AmpC producers (25%) was noted. The presence of ESC-R-Ec in the SOCs and their potential ability to be exchanged between hospital and community should be taken into serious consideration.

Context: Population-based screening has been advocated for subclinical thyroid dysfunction in the elderly because the disorder is perceived to be common, and health benefits may be accrued by detection and treatment. Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction and unidentified overt thyroid dysfunction in an elderly population. Design, Setting, and Participants: A cross-sectional survey of a community sample of participants aged 65 yr and older registered with 20 family practices in the United Kingdom. Exclusions: Exclusions included current therapy for thyroid disease, thyroid surgery, or treatment within 12 months. Outcome Measure: Tests of thyroid function (TSH concentration and free T 4 concentration in all, with measurement of free T3 in those with low TSH) were conducted. Explanatory Variables: These included all current medical diagnoses and drug therapies, age, gender, and socioeconomic deprivation (Index of Multiple Deprivation, 2004) Analysis: Standardized prevalence rates were analyzed. Logistic regression modeling was used to determine factors associated with the presence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction Results: A total of 5960 attended for screening. Using biochemical definitions, 94.2% [95% confidence interval (CI) 93.8-94.6%] were euthyroid. Unidentified overt hyper- and hypothyroidism were uncommon (0.3, 0.4%, respectively). Subclinical hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were identified with similar frequency (2.1%, 95% CI 1.8-2.3%; 2.9%, 95% CI 2.6-3.1%, respectively). Subclinical thyroid dysfunction was more common in females (P < 0.001) and with increasing age (P < 0.001). After allowing for comorbidities, concurrent drug therapies, age, and gender, an association between subclinical hyperthyroidism and a composite measure of socioeconomic deprivation remained. Conclusions: Undiagnosed overt thyroid dysfunction is uncommon. The prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction is 5%. We have, for the first time, identified an independent association between the prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction and deprivation that cannot be explained solely by the greater burden of chronic disease and/or consequent drug therapies in the deprived population.
