Amorphous polymer/salt mixtures based on polyvinyl alcohol and poly(hydroxyethylacrylate) and poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate) are described. The polyvinylalcohol materials have been prepared by a solvent free hot pressing technique as well as the traditional solvent casting method. The hot pressing technique allows the production of samples which are genuinely free of solvents and thereby has allowed an assessment in this work of the effect of residual solvent on conductivity. The acrylate materials were prepared by direct polymerization of monomer/salt mixtures, thus avoiding the need for solvents. These materials have glass transitions around or well above room temperature, but nonetheless have conductivities as high as 10−7 S/cm at room temperature. The temperature and composition dependence of conductivity are also presented.

High-quality InGaAs/InAlAs/InP high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) structures with lattice-matched or pseudomorphic channels have been grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). The purpose of this work is to enhance the channel conductivity by changing the epitaxial structure and growth process. With the use of pseudomorphic step quantum-well channel, the highest channel conductivity is achieved at x = 0.7, the corresponding electron mobilities are as high as 12300 (300 K) and 61000 cm(2)/V.s (77 K) with two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) density of 3.3 x 10(12) cm(-2). These structures are comprehensively characterized by Hall measurements, photoluminescence, double crystal X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Strong room-temperature luminescence is observed, demonstrating the high optical quality of the samples. We also show that decreasing the In composition in the InyAl1-yAs spacer is very effective to increase the 2DEG density of PHEMT structures. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The Ce6-xYxMoO15-delta solid solution with fluorite-related structure have been characterized by differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetry (DTA/TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR, Raman, scanning electric microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods. The electric conductivity of samples is investigated by Ac impedance spectroscopy. An essentially pure oxide-ion conductivity of the oxygen-deficiency was observed in pure argon, oxygen and air. The highest oxygen-ion conductivity was found in Ce5.5Y0.5MoO15-delta ranging from 5.9 X 10(-5)(S cm(-1)) at 300 degrees C to 1.3 X 10(-2)(S cm(-1)) at 650 degrees C, respectively. The oxide-ion conductivities remained stable over 80 h-long test at 800 degrees C. These properties suggested that significant oxide-ionic conductivity exists in these materials at moderately elevated temperatures.

A new amorphous comblike polymer(CBP) based on methylvinyl ether/maleic anhydride alternating copolymer backbone and on oligooxyethylene side chain was synthesized The dynamic mechanical properties of CBP-Li salt complexes showed that there were two glass transitions. There are two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity vs. Li salt concentration. The plot of Log sigma against 1/(T-To) shows an unusual dual VTF behavior when using sidechain glass transition temperature (T-beta) as To.

Doping lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (Li[NTf2]) into the N-ethyl,N′-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([C2mpyr][NTf2]) plastic crystal material has previously indicated order of magnitude enhancements in ion transport and conductivity over pure [C2mpyr][NTf2]. Recently, conductivity enhancements in this ionic plastic crystal induced by SiO2 nanoparticles have also been reported. In this work the inclusion of SiO2 nanoparticles in Li ion doped [C2mpyr][NTf2] has been investigated over a wide temperature range by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), impedance spectroscopy, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Solid state 1H NMR indicates that the addition of the nanoparticles increases the mobility of the [C2mpyr] cation and positron lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements indicate an increase in mean defect size and defect concentration as a result of nanoparticle inclusion, especially with 10 wt% SiO2. Thus, the substantial drop in ion conductivity observed for this doped nanocomposite material was surprising. This decrease is most likely due to the decrease in mobility of the [NTf2] anion, possibly by its adsorption at the SiO2/grain boundary interface and concomitant decrease in mobility of the Li ion.

The addition of up to 4 mol% of the strong acids, trifluoromethane sulfonic acid (TfOH) and bis-trifluoromethanesulfonyl imide [HN(Tf) 2], to the organic ionic plastic crystal (OIPC) [Choline][DHP] has been shown to dramatically increase the ionic conductivity by up to three orders of magnitude whilst still retaining the crystalline structure of the OIPC matrix. This enhanced proton diffusivity led to a significant proton reduction reaction in the electrochemical measurements. Powder XRD and DSC thermal analyses strongly suggest that these mixtures are single phase, crystalline materials. The work here also confirms that an increase in TfOH acid concentration (8 mol% and 12 mol%) results in a higher content of the amorphous phase as previously observed for the H 3PO 4/[Choline][DHP] system. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

It is a challenge to retain the high stretchability of an elastomer when used in polymer composites. Likewise, the high conductivity of organic conductors is typically compromised when used as filler in composite systems. Here, it is possible to achieve elastomeric fiber composites with high electrical conductivity at relatively low loading of the conductor and, more importantly, to attain mechanical properties that are useful in strain-sensing applications. The preparation of homogenous composite formulations from polyurethane (PU) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) that are also processable by fiber wet-spinning techniques are systematically evaluated. With increasing PEDOT:PSS loading in the fiber composites, the Young's modulus increases exponentially and the yield stress increases linearly. A model describing the effects of the reversible and irreversible deformations as a result of the re-arrangement of PEDOT:PSS filler networks within PU and how this relates to the electromechanical properties of the fibers during the tensile and cyclic stretching is presented. Conducting elastomeric fibers based on a composite of polyurethane (PU) and PEDOT:PSS, produced by a wet-spinning method, have high electrical conductivity and stretchability. These fibers can sense large strains by changes in resistance. The PU/PEDOT:PSS fiber is optimized to achieve the best strain sensing. PU/PEDOT:PSS fibers can be produced on a large scale and integrated into conventional textiles by weaving or knitting. © 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The preparation of the ZrO(2):8 mol % Y(2)O(3)/NiO (YSZ/NiO) composites by a modified liquid mixture technique is reported. Nanometric NiO particles dispersed over the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) were prepared, resulting in dense sintered specimens with no solid solution formation between the oxides. Such a feature allowed for the electrical characterization of the composites in a wide range of relative volume fraction, temperature, and oxygen partial pressure. The main results indicate that the composites have high electrical conductivity, and the transport properties in these mixed ionic-electronic (MIEC) composites are strongly dependent on the relative volume fraction of the phases, microstructure, and temperature. These parameters should hence be taken into consideration for the optimized design of MIEC composites for electrochemical applications. In this context, the composite was reduced under H(2) for the preparation of high-conductivity YSZ/Ni cermets for use as solid oxide fuel cell anode material with relatively low metal content. We report an investigation into the high-frequency conductivity of optically excited charge carriers far from equilibrium with the lattice. The investigated samples consist of hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon films grown on a thin film of silicon oxide on top of a silicon substrate. For the investigation, we used an optical femtosecond pump-probe setup to measure the reflectance change of a probe beam. The pump beam ranged between 580 and 820nm, whereas the probe wavelength spanned 770 to 810nm. The pump fluence was fixed at 0.6mJ/cm2. We show that at a fixed delay time of 300fs, the conductivity of the excited electron-hole plasma is described well by a classical conductivity model of a hot charge carrier gas found at Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, while Fermi-Dirac statics is not suitable. This is corroborated by values retrieved from pump-probe reflectance measurements of the conductivity and its dependence on the excitation wavelength and carrier temperature. The conductivity decreases monotonically as a function of the excitation wavelength, as expected for a nondegenerate charge carrier gas.

The bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ion has recently been used in its lithium salt as a useful ion in solid polymer electrolytes because of the reduced degree of ion interaction its diffuse charge generates. In this work we have synthesised a number of novel salts based on the ammonium and pyrrolidinium cations of this anion. The salts all show reduced melting points compared with analogous halide salts. In some cases they are molten at room temperature. This latter group of salts have been characterized with respect to their properties as ionic liquids; the highest room temperature conductivity 2 mS cm−1 being exhibited by methyl butyl pyrrolidinium imide. Many of the salts are glass forming, exhibiting glass transition temperatures in the region of −90°C.
