We demonstrate that the surface relief guided-mode resonant gratings with specified central wavelength and FWHM in the visible wavelength range can be designed by analyzing the complex poles of Reflectance and transmission coefficient matrix algorithm (RTCM), a variant of S-matrix propagation algorithm proposed for calculation of multilayer gratings. In addition, FWHM is computed with couple-mode (CM) theory of resonant gratings which is firstly extended by Norton et al. in calculation of waveguide grating. Furthermore, the side band reflections of the filter can be reduced to less than 5% in the visible wavelength with the antireflection (AR) design technique widely used in the thin-film field.

In this paper, a new type of guided-mode resonant grating (GMRG) filter with an antireflective surface called the 'moth-eye structure' for the multiple channels is presented by using rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) and the S-matrix method. Long range, low sidebands and multiple channels are found when the GMRG filters with antireflective surface are illuminated with incident polarization light. It is calculated that the multiple channel phenomenon can be shown when the depth of antireflective surface is increased. Moreover, the wavelengths of the multiple channels can be easily shifted by changing the depth of the homogenous layer which is under the antireflective surface, and the optical properties of GMRG filters such as low sideband reflection and narrow band are not badly spoiled when the depth is changed.

Unless the fabrication error control is well treated, it easily causes overetched fabrication errors, which causes the resonant peak value deviation during the fabrication process of guided-mode resonant filters (GMRFs). Hence, the fabrication error control becomes a key point for improving the performance of GMRF. We find that, within the range of the groove depth from 93 to 105 nm, the relationship between the overetched error and the resonant peak value deviation is nearly linear, which means that we can compensate the reflectance response deviation and reduce the resonant peak value deviation by the method of covering the layer film on the GMRF. Simulation results show that the deviation is compensated perfectly by this way. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

In this paper the resonant wavelength of a long period fiber grating (LPG) is tuned toward longer wavelength by etching the fiber, For LP04 and LP05 cladding modes', the tuning ranges of 23 and 81 nm are achieved, respectively. Also the dependence of the resonant wavelength on the cladding radius of LPG is theoretically simulated. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B,V. All rights reserved.

In order to characterise long period gratings fabricated in endlessly single mode photonic crystal fibres with bulk cladding we perform eigenanalysis of guided modes supported by these fibres. Resonant coupling occurs only when the beating length equals the multiple grating periods. Experimentally obtained grating spectra and sensitivity are fully explained using modified phase matching condition.

A comprehensive eigenmode analysis is performed of the guided modes supported by typical photonic crystal fiber. These modes exhibit unusual phase matching conditions requiring multiple grating periods for resonant coupling. All the signature features of the experimentally observed transmission spectra are explained by multiple-period resonances.

Based on the Mach-Zehnder effect between the core mode and the cladding modes, the interference fringes are formed by a pair of cascaded long-period fiber gratings (CLPFGs). Theoretical analyses show that the spectral spacing and the wavelength of these fringes are functions of the waveguide dispersion factor gamma, which is a characterizing parameter to LPFG and with theoretical and applicational significance. By measuring the characteristics of the transmission spectra of CLPFGs, the absolute value of gamma can be obtained. At the same time, the thermo-optic coefficient of effective refractive index difference between core and cladding modes, p, can also be obtained by measured the temperature sensitivity of these fringes. In the experiments, \gamma\ and mu were measured by this method to be 0.874 and 4.08 x 10(-5) degreesC(-1), respectively, for LPFGs with period of 450 mum and with a HE14 resonant peak at 1554 nm. Electric fields inside guided-mode resonance filters (GMRFs) may be intensified by resonance effects. The electric field enhancement is investigated in two GMRFs: one is resonant at normal incidence, the other at oblique incidence. It is shown that the two GMRFs exhibit different behaviors in their electric enhancement. Differences between the electric field distributions of the two GMRFs arise because coupling between counter-propagating modes occurs in the first case. It is also shown that the order of the electric field of maximum amplitude can be controlled by modulation of the dielectric constant of the grating. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

The authors present an analysis of plasmonic wave filter and curved waveguide, simulated using a 2-D finite-difference time-domain technique. With different dielectric materials or surface structures located on the interface of the metal/dielectric, the resonant enhanced wave filter can divide light waves of different wavelengths and guide them with low losses. And the straight or curved waveguide can confine and guide light waves in a subwavelength scale. Within the 20 mu m simulation region, it is found that the intensity of the guided light at the interface is roughly four times the peak intensity of the incident light.

In this paper, the effective coupling coefficient k(eff) and the self-coupling coefficient zeta(1) are introduced to describe the characteristic of gratings in a resonant situation when the effects of radiation and other partial waves coupling are considered. The dependence of these two coupling coefficients on grating tooth shapes and depths and the dimensions of graded refractive index (GRIN) waveguides is numerically analysed. The results show that the gratings with linear GRIN waveguides have the largest \k(eff)\. The possibility of realizing a complex-coupled DFB laser, even a pure gain or loss coupled DFB laser, employing only a real refractive index coupled grating is also discussed.

We present a precise theoretical explanation and prediction of certain resonant peaks and dips in the electromagnetic transmission coefficient of periodically structured slabs in the presence of nonrobust guided slab modes. We also derive the leading asymptotic behavior of the related phenomenon of resonant enhancement near the guided mode. The theory applies to structures in which losses are negligible and to very general geometries of the unit cell. It is based on boundary-integral representations of the electromagnetic fields. These depend on the frequency and on the Bloch wave vector and provide a complex-analytic connection in these parameters between generalized scattering states and guided slab modes. The perturbation of three coincident zeros-those of the dispersion relation for slab modes, the reflection constant, and the transmission constant-is central to calculating transmission anomalies both for lossless dielectric materials and for perfect metals.

Sol–gel derived poly(oxyethylene)/siloxane organic–inorganic di-ureasil hybrids containing different amounts (20–60% mol) of methacrylic acid (McOH) modified zirconium oxo-clusters (Zr-OMc) were processed as thin films and transparent and shape controlled monoliths. Laser direct writing was used to create channel waveguides, Bragg gratings, Fabry–Perot cavities and optical filters. The resulting Fabry–Perot optical cavity displays a free spectral range of 16.55 GHz and a fringe intensity contrast of 5.35 dB. Optical rejection values between 6.7 and 10.4 dB were obtained by varying the amount of the Zr-OMc oxo-clusters.
