The developing energy markets and rising energy system costs have sparked the need to find new forms of energy production and increase the self-sufficiency of energy production. One alternative is gasification, whose principles have been known for decades, but it is only recently when the technology has become a true alternative. However, in order to meet the requirements of modern energy production methods, it is necessary to study the phenomenon thoroughly. In order to understand the gasification process better and optimize it from the viewpoint of ecology and energy efficiency, it is necessary to develop effective and reliable modeling tools for gasifiers. The main aims of this work have been to understand gasification as a process and furthermore to develop an existing three-dimensional circulating fluidized bed modeling tool for modeling of gasification. The model is applied to two gasification processes of 12 and 50 MWth. The results of modeling and measurements have been compared and subsequently reviewed. The work was done in co-operation with Lappeenranta University of Technology and Foster Wheeler Energia Oy.

Wood gasification technologies to convert the biomass into fuel gas stand out. on the other hand, producing electrical energy from stationary engine is widely spread, and its application in rural communities where the electrical network doesn't exist is very required. The recovery of exhaust gases (engine) is a possibility that makes the system attractive when compared with the same components used to obtain individual heat such as electric power. This paper presents an energetic alternative to adapt a fixed bed gasifier with a compact cogeneration system in order to cover electrical and thermal demands in a rural area and showing an energy solution for small social communities using renewable fuels. Therefore, an energetic and economical analysis from a cogeneration system producing electric energy, hot and cold water, using wooden gas as fuel from a small-sized gasifier was calculated. The energy balance that includes the energy efficiency (electric generation as well as hot and cold water system; performance coefficient and the heat exchanger, among other items), was calculated. Considering the annual interest rates and the amortization periods, the costs of production of electrical energy, hot and cold water were calculated, taking into account the investment, the operation and the maintenance cost of the equipments. This work aims to study the thermodynamic, ecological and fluid-dynamic aspects of a circulating fluidized bed gasifier using sugar cane bagasse as biomass, in order to estimate a model of its normal operation. In the initial stage was analysed the composition of biomass selected (sugar cane bagasse) and its lower heating value (LHV) was calculated. The energy balance of the gasifier was done, being the volumetric flow of air, synthesis gas and biomass estimated. Also the power produced by this gasifier was theoretically estimated. Then the circulating fluidized bed gasifier was designed for operation with approximately 100 kg/h of processed biomass. Cross-sectional area of the reactor, feeder size, diameter of the exit zone of the gases and minimum height of the expanded bed were selected. Some bed gasifier hydrodynamic factors were also studied. The minimum fluidization velocity, fluidization terminal velocity, and average fluidizing velocity were calculated, in order to understand the fluid-dynamic behaviour of gasification of this fuel. It was obtained a theoretical model that can support a possible prototype of circulating fluidized bed gasifier biomass. Finally, there were studied the ecological aspects of the gasifier, through an overall methodology. Ecological efficiencies were estimated for two scenarios: first considering the carbon cycle and thereafter disregarding the carbon cycle. The updraft biomass gasifiers currently available produce a gas with high tar content. For almost all downstream applications a substantial reduction of the tar concentration is required. The gravimetric tar concentration behavior in producer gas, obtained at a modified updraft fixed bed gasifier, was studied. The feedstock feeding system was modified respect to the traditional updraft gasification design in order to decrease the tar concentration in the producer gas; the material is feeding continuously through a conduit in the base of the reactor over the grate. The caloric power of the syngas obtained was slightly lower than the typical value for this type of reactor and the highest efficiency obtained for the woodchip gasification was 77%. The highest tar concentration obtained during the experiments was 1652.7 mg N m-3 during the first our of experiments, comparable with the smaller value reported for the updraft reactors, this value is reduced significantly after the stabilization of the gasification process in the reactor. The smaller value obtained was 21 mg N m-3. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The objective of this work is to develop a non-stoichiometric equilibrium model to study parameter effects in the gasification process of a feedstock in downdraft gasifiers. The non-stoichiometric equilibrium model is also known as the Gibbs free energy minimization method. Four models were developed and tested. First a pure non-stoichiometric equilibrium model called M1 was developed; then the methane content was constrained by correlating experimental data and generating the model M2. A kinetic constraint that determines the apparent gasification rate was considered for model M3 and finally the two aforementioned constraints were implemented together in model M4. Models M2 and M4 showed to be the more accurate among the four developed models with mean RMS (root mean square error) values of 1.25 each.Also the gasification of Brazilian Pinus elliottii in a downdraft gasifier with air as gasification agent was studied. The input parameters considered were: (a) equivalence ratio (0.28-035); (b) moisture content (5-20%); (c) gasification time (30-120 min) and carbon conversion efficiency (80-100%). The aim of this work is to develop stoichiometric equilibrium models that permit the study of parameters effect in the gasification process of a particular feedstock. In total four models were tested in order to determine the syngas composition. One of these four models, called M2, was based on the theoretical equilibrium constants modified by two correction factors determined using published experimental data. The other two models, M3 and M4 were based in correlations, while model M4 was based in correlations to determine the equilibrium constants, model M3 was based in correlations that relate the H-2, CO and CO2 content on the synthesis gas. Model M2 proved to be the more accurate and versatile among these four models, and also showed better results than some previously published models. Also a case study for the gasification of a blend of hardwood chips and glycerol at 80% and 20% respectively, was performed considering equivalence ratios form 0.3 to 0.5, moisture contents from 0%-20% and oxygen percentages in the gasification agent of 100%, 60% and 21%. The objectives of this research were to investigate the perforamnce of a rubberwood gasifier and engine with electricity generation and to identify opportunities for the implementation of such a system in Malaysia. The experimental work included the design, fabrication and commissioning of a throated downdraft gasifier in Malaysia. The gasifier was subsequently used to investigate the effect of moisture content, dry wood capacity and particle size of rubberwood on gasifier performance. Additional experiments were also conducted to investigate the influence of two different nozzle numbers and two different throat diameters on tar cracking. A total of 101 runs were completed during the duration of the research. From the experimental data, the average mass balance was found to be 92.65%. The average energy balance over the gasifier to hot raw gas was 98.7%, to cold clean gas was 102.4% and over the complete system was 101.9%. The heat loss from the gasifier was estimated to range from 10-26% of the chemical energy of the feedstock. From the downstream operation, the heat loss was estimated to range from 17-37% of the chemical energy of rubberwood feedstock. The maximum throughput for stable operation was found to be 60-70% of the maximum dry wood capacity. The gasifier was found to have a maximum turndown ratio of 5:1. It is also postulated that the phenomenon of turndown of the gasifier is due to a `bubble theory' occurring at the gasification zone, and this hypothesis is explained. For stable power output, the working range of the engine was found to be 5-33.5 kWe. The thermal efficiency and diesel displacement of the engine was found to be 17-18% and 65-70% respectively. The research also showed that rubberwood gasification in Malaysia is feasible if the price of diesel is above MR35/l and the price of wood is below MR120/tonne.

Fatigue crack growth tests have been carried out in a number of gaseous environments in order to assess their effects on the crack propagation resistance of BS 4360 grade 50EE, a weldable structural steel. Crack growth rates at 25 °C are up to 20 times higher in hydrogen than in air, but there is no effect when hydrogen is present as a 30% constituent of a simplified product gas (SPG). Indeed, crack growth rates in such a mixture are slightly lower than those measured in air, being comparable with those observed in an inert environment. The other gases present in the SPG are CO, CO2 and CH4, and it is probable that the carbon monoxide is responsible for nullifying the embrittling effects of hydrogen, by preferentially adsorbing on to the surface of the steel and thus blocking hydrogen entry. Experimental observations suggest that oxygen has the same effect when small quantities are allowed to diffuse into a non-flowing hydrogen environment around a propagating crack. The results are encouraging in terms of the suitability of conventional structural steels such as BS 4360 for gas plant applications. The gas mixtures present in such an environment would not have the severe detrimental effects on fatigue crack growth resistance which result from the presence of 'pure' hydrogen. © 1993.

Na actualidade, quando se procura a diversificação energética, em especial de fontes renováveis, a gasificação surge como uma forma promissora de aproveitamento da biomassa, nomeadamente dos resíduos florestais, para a geração de energia eléctrica. Neste contexto, passou-se em revista as diversas formas de gasificação, a sua evolução histórica e os diversos tipos de reactores com as suas vantagens e desvantagens. De igual forma, foram analisadas as disponibilidades e características da biomassa no mundo e em Portugal, destacando-se as suas potencialidades e as dificuldades no seu aproveitamento. Fez-se o dimensionamento de um reactor-gasificador de leito fluidizado borbulhante à escala piloto, bem como dos equipamentos complementares, sistema de alimentação, ventilador, ciclone, filtro para o gás produzido e gerador eléctrico. As dimensões dum reactor para trabalhos laboratoriais foram determinadas por cálculo das condições hidrodinâmicas, que, também, permitiram calcular o caudal de ar a utilizar. Por balanços materiais, considerando-se uma composição experimental do gás de síntese citada na literatura, determinou-se uma possível composição da alimentação e um caudal de alimentação.

A procura de uma forma limpa de combustível, aliada à crescente instabilidade de preços dos combustíveis fósseis verificada nos mercados faz com que o hidrogénio se torne num combustível a considerar devido a não resultar qualquer produto poluente da sua queima e de se poder utilizar, por exemplo, desperdícios florestais cujo valor de mercado não está inflacionado por não pertencer à cadeia alimentar humana. Este trabalho tem como objetivo simular o processo de gasificação de biomassa para produção de hidrogénio utilizando um gasificador de leito fluidizado circulante. O oxigénio e vapor de água funcionam como agentes gasificantes. Para o efeito usou-se o simulador de processos químicos ASPEN Plus. A simulação desenvolvida compreende três etapas que ocorrem no interior do gasificador: pirólise, que foi simulada por um bloco RYIELD, combustão de parte dos compostos voláteis, simulada por um bloco RSTOIC e, por fim, as reações de oxidação e gasificação do carbonizado “char”, simuladas por um bloco RPLUG. Os valores de rendimento dos compostos após a pirólise, obtidos por uma correlação proposta por Gomez-Barea, et al. (2010), foram os seguintes: 20,33% “char”, 22,59% alcatrão, 36,90% monóxido de carbono, 16,05%m/m dióxido de carbono, 3,33% metano e 0,79% hidrogénio (% em massa). Como não foi possível encontrar valores da variação da composição do gás à saída do gasificador com a variação da temperatura, para o caso de vapor de água e oxigénio, optou-se por utilizar apenas vapor na simulação de forma a comparar os seus valores com os da literatura. Às temperaturas de 700, 770 e 820ºC, para um “steam-to-biomass ratio”, (SBR) igual a 0,5, os valores da percentagem molar de monóxido de carbono foram, respetivamente, 56,60%, 55,84% e 53,85%, os valores de hidrogénio foram, respetivamente, 17,83%, 18,25% e 19,31%, os valores de dióxido de carbono foram, respetivamente, 16,40%, 16,85% e 17,93% e os valores de metano foram, respetivamente, 9,00%, 8,95% e 8,83%. Os valores da composição à saída do gasificador, à temperatura de 820ºC, para um SBR de 0,5 foram: 53,85% de monóxido de carbono, 19,31% de hidrogénio, 17,93% de dióxido de carbono e 8,83% de metano (% em moles). Para um SBR de 0,7 a composição à saída foi de 54,45% de monóxido de carbono, 19,01% de hidrogénio, 17,59% de dióxido de carbono e 8,87% de metano. Por fim, quando SBR foi igual a 1 a composição do gás à saída foi de 55,08% de monóxido de carbono, 18,69% de hidrogénio, 17,24% de dióxido de carbono e 8,90% de metano. Os valores da composição obtidos através da simulação, para uma mistura de ar e vapor de água, ER igual a 0,26 e SBR igual a 1, foram: 34,00% de monóxido de carbono, 14,65% de hidrogénio, 45,81% de dióxido de carbono e 5,41% de metano. A simulação permitiu-nos ainda dimensionar o gasificador e determinar alguns parâmetros hidrodinâmicos do gasificador, considerando que a reação “water-gas shift” era a limitante, e que se pretendia obter uma conversão de 95%. A velocidade de operação do gasificador foi de 4,7m/s e a sua altura igual a 0,73m, para um diâmetro de 0,20m.
