The activity view of inner speech

We distinguish two general approaches to inner speech (IS) the "format" and the "activity" views and defend the activity view. The format view grounds the utility of IS on features of the representational format of language, and is related to the thesis that the proper function of IS is to make conscious thinking possible. IS appears typically as a product constituted by representations of phonological features. The view also has implications for the idea that passivity phenomena in cognition may be misat-tributed IS. The activity view sees IS as a speaking activity that does not have a proper function in cognition. It simply inherits the array of functions of outer speech. We argue that it is methodologically advisable to start from this variety of uses, which suggests commonalities between internal and external activities. The format view has several problems; it has to deny "unsymbolized thinking"; it cannot easily explain how IS makes thoughts available to consciousness, and it cannot explain those uses of IS where its format features apparently play no role. The activity view not only lacks these problems but also has explanatory advantages: construing IS as an activity allows it to be integrally constituted by its content; the view is able to construe unsymbolized thinking as part of a continuum of phenomena that exploit the same mechanisms, and it offers a simple explanation for the variety of uses of IS

Useful field of view test

A test of the useful field of view was introduced more than two decades ago and was designed to reflect the visual difficulties that older adults experience with everyday tasks. Importantly, the useful field of view is one of the most extensively researched and promising predictor tests for a range of driving outcomes measures, including driving ability and crash risk, as well as other everyday tasks. Currently available commercial versions of the test can be administered using personal computers and measure speed of visual processing speed for rapid detection and localization of targets under conditions of divided visual attention and in the presence and absence of visual clutter. The test is believed to assess higher order cognitive abilities, but performance also relies on visual sensory function since targets must be visible in order to be attended to. The format of the useful field of view test has been modified over the years; the original version estimated the spatial extent of useful field of view, while the latest versions measures visual processing speed. While deficits in the useful field of view are associated with functional impairments in everyday activities in older adults, there is also emerging evidence from several research groups that improvements in visual processing speed can be achieved through training. These improvements have been shown to reduce crash risk, and have a positive impact on health and functional well being, with the potential to increase the mobility and hence independence of older adults.

Developing a Multidisciplinary Process View of IFC Standardization

The industry foundation classes (IFC) file format is one of the most complex and ambitious IT standardization projects currently being undertaken in any industry, focusing on the development of an open and neutral standard for exchanging building model data. Scientific literature related to the IFC standard has dominantly been technical so far; research looking at the IFC standard from an industry standardization per- spective could offer valuable new knowledge for both theory and practice. This paper proposes the use of IT standardization and IT adoption theories, supported by studies done within construction IT, to lay a theoretical foundation for further empirical analysis of the standardization process of the IFC file format.

Coherent wavelength division multiplexing: a novel transmission format for high spectral density optical communication networks

In this thesis a novel transmission format, named Coherent Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CoWDM) for use in high information spectral density optical communication networks is proposed and studied. In chapter I a historical view of fibre optic communication systems as well as an overview of state of the art technology is presented to provide an introduction to the subject area. We see that, in general the aim of modern optical communication system designers is to provide high bandwidth services while reducing the overall cost per transmitted bit of information. In the remainder of the thesis a range of investigations, both of a theoretical and experimental nature are carried out using the CoWDM transmission format. These investigations are designed to consider features of CoWDM such as its dispersion tolerance, compatibility with forward error correction and suitability for use in currently installed long haul networks amongst others. A high bit rate optical test bed constructed at the Tyndall National Institute facilitated most of the experimental work outlined in this thesis and a collaboration with France Telecom enabled long haul transmission experiments using the CoWDM format to be carried out. An amount of research was also carried out on ancillary topics such as optical comb generation, forward error correction and phase stabilisation techniques. The aim of these investigations is to verify the suitability of CoWDM as a cost effective solution for use in both current and future high bit rate optical communication networks

The only way is up: retail format saturation and the demise of the American five and dime store, 1914-1941

We examine a classic ‘wheel of retailing’ episode – the abandonment of the five and dime pricing formula by American variety chains. These switched from a conventional product lifecycle, focusing on cost reduction through standardisation, to a reverse path up the ‘service cost - unit value’ continuum. We show that, rather than reflecting deteriorating managerial acumen, this was a response to the continued imperative for growth following retail format saturation. Firm-specific (rather than format-specific) competitive advantages were too weak for any chain to be confident it could win a within-format price war, making inter-format competition through raising price points more attractive.

The software Multibeam Converter is a tool to convert files or folders of files (ascii/tab-separated data files with or without metaheader), downloaded from PANGAEA via the search engine or the data warehouse to the ODV import format, e.g. for visualization or further processing. MultibeamConverter is distributed as freeware for the operating systems Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X and Linux.

Traduzione audiovisiva e format gastronomici: proposta di sottotitolaggio in italiano e in francese della finale di Masterchef

In questo mio elaborato ho affrontato il tema della traduzione audiovisiva. Mi sono soffermata sulla tecnica del sottotitolaggio, concentrando la mia attenzione sui format televisivi di cucina. Sono stata spinta da una vera e propria passione per tutto ciò che riguarda la sfera gastronomica e i programmi televisivi a questa dedicati. Oggi queste trasmissioni hanno raggiunto un vero e proprio successo mondiale. La nostra è l’era dei grandi format televisivi che non parlano altro che di cucina, sfide tra i fornelli e critiche spietate. La cucina è alla base di ogni civiltà ed è parte integrante della cultura di ogni popolo. Tra le molteplici sfaccettature delle culture, troviamo la gastronomia che, dal mio punta di vista, è situata ai primi posti per importanza. L’Italia e la Francia hanno, sin da sempre, dimostrato la loro eccellenza all’interno del panorama mondiale enogastronomico: la cucina italiana, con la sua semplicità e i suoi sapori mediterranei, e quella francese, ricca di note tradizionali ed esotiche all’unisono. Per questo motivo, la mia attenzione si è rivolta a un talk show culinario ormai noto in tutto il mondo: MasterChef. In questo format televisivo, i concorrenti sono tenuti a sostenere varie prove, nelle quali bisogna realizzare piatti dell’arte culinaria del paese in cui il programma viene trasmesso e non solo. Scopo del programma è aggiudicarsi il titolo di miglior chef. Ho scelto chiaramente un’edizione a mio piacimento del programma per entrambi i paesi e ho proposto un sottotitolaggio per un particolare momento di questo format televisivo: la finale. Nella fattispecie, ho proposto il sottotitolaggio per la finale di MasterChef Italia in francese e per la finale di MasterChef France in italiano. Ho scelto di sottotitolare questo particolare momento della trasmissione televisiva, in quanto ritengo che, oltre ad essere uno dei più emozionanti per i telespettatori, sia ricco di elementi utili per un’analisi approfondita in ambito traduttivo.
