The goal of this EPS@ISEP project proposed in the Spring of 2014 was to develop a flapping wing flying robot. The project was embraced by a multinational team composed of four students from different countries and fields of study. The team designed and implemented a robot inspired by a biplane design, constructed from lightweight materials and battery powered. The prototype, called MyBird, was built with a 250 € budget, reuse existing materials as well as low cost solutions. Although the team's initial idea was to build a light radio controlled robot, time limitations along with setbacks involving the required electrical components led to a light but not radio controlled prototype. The team, from the experience gathered, made a number of future improvement suggestions, namely, the addition of radio control and a camera and the adoption of articulated monoplane design instead of the current biplane design for the wings.

Dragonflies demonstrate unique and superior flight performances than most of the other insect species and birds. They are equipped with two pairs of independently controlled wings granting an unmatchable flying performance and robustness. In this paper, the dynamics of a dragonfly-inspired robot is studied. The system performance is analyzed in terms of time response and robustness. The development of computational simulation based on the dynamics of the robotic dragonfly allows the test of different control algorithms. We study different movements, the dynamics, and the level of dexterity in wing motion of the dragonfly. The results are positive for the construction of flying platforms that effectively mimic the kinematics and dynamics of dragonflies and potentially exhibit superior flight performance than existing flying platforms.

Bats are animals that posses high maneuvering capabilities. Their wings contain dozens of articulations that allow the animal to perform aggressive maneuvers by means of controlling the wing shape during flight (morphing-wings). There is no other flying creature in nature with this level of wing dexterity and there is biological evidence that the inertial forces produced by the wings have a key role in the attitude movements of the animal. This can inspire the design of highly articulated morphing-wing micro air vehicles (not necessarily bat-like) with a significant wing-to-body mass ratio. This thesis presents the development of a novel bat-like micro air vehicle (BaTboT) inspired by the morphing-wing mechanism of bats. BaTboT’s morphology is alike in proportion compared to its biological counterpart Cynopterus brachyotis, which provides the biological foundations for developing accurate mathematical models and methods that allow for mimicking bat flight. In nature bats can achieve an amazing level of maneuverability by combining flapping and morphing wingstrokes. Attempting to reproduce the biological wing actuation system that provides that kind of motion using an artificial counterpart requires the analysis of alternative actuation technologies more likely muscle fiber arrays instead of standard servomotor actuators. Thus, NiTinol Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) acting as artificial biceps and triceps muscles are used for mimicking the morphing wing mechanism of the bat flight apparatus. This antagonistic configuration of SMA-muscles response to an electrical heating power signal to operate. This heating power is regulated by a proper controller that allows for accurate and fast SMA actuation. Morphing-wings will enable to change wings geometry with the unique purpose of enhancing aerodynamics performance. During the downstroke phase of the wingbeat motion both wings are fully extended aimed at increasing the area surface to properly generate lift forces. Contrary during the upstroke phase of the wingbeat motion both wings are retracted to minimize the area and thus reducing drag forces. Morphing-wings do not only improve on aerodynamics but also on the inertial forces that are key to maneuver. Thus, a modeling framework is introduced for analyzing how BaTboT should maneuver by means of changing wing morphology. This allows the definition of requirements for achieving forward and turning flight according to the kinematics of the wing modulation. Motivated by the biological fact about the influence of wing inertia on the production of body accelerations, an attitude controller is proposed. The attitude control law incorporates wing inertia information to produce desired roll (φ) and pitch (θ) acceleration commands. This novel flight control approach is aimed at incrementing net body forces (Fnet) that generate propulsion. Mimicking the way how bats take advantage of inertial and aerodynamical forces produced by the wings in order to both increase lift and maneuver is a promising way to design more efficient flapping/morphing wings MAVs. The novel wing modulation strategy and attitude control methodology proposed in this thesis provide a totally new way of controlling flying robots, that eliminates the need of appendices such as flaps and rudders, and would allow performing more efficient maneuvers, especially useful in confined spaces. As a whole, the BaTboT project consists of five major stages of development: - Study and analysis of biological bat flight data reported in specialized literature aimed at defining design and control criteria. - Formulation of mathematical models for: i) wing kinematics, ii) dynamics, iii) aerodynamics, and iv) SMA muscle-like actuation. It is aimed at modeling the effects of modulating wing inertia into the production of net body forces for maneuvering. - Bio-inspired design and fabrication of: i) skeletal structure of wings and body, ii) SMA muscle-like mechanisms, iii) the wing-membrane, and iv) electronics onboard. It is aimed at developing the bat-like platform (BaTboT) that allows for testing the methods proposed. - The flight controller: i) control of SMA-muscles (morphing-wing modulation) and ii) flight control (attitude regulation). It is aimed at formulating the proper control methods that allow for the proper modulation of BaTboT’s wings. - Experiments: it is aimed at quantifying the effects of properly wing modulation into aerodynamics and inertial production for maneuvering. It is also aimed at demonstrating and validating the hypothesis of improving flight efficiency thanks to the novel control methods presented in this thesis. This thesis introduces the challenges and methods to address these stages. Windtunnel experiments will be oriented to discuss and demonstrate how the wings can considerably affect the dynamics/aerodynamics of flight and how to take advantage of wing inertia modulation that the morphing-wings enable to properly change wings’ geometry during flapping. Resumen: Los murciélagos son mamíferos con una alta capacidad de maniobra. Sus alas están conformadas por docenas de articulaciones que permiten al animal maniobrar gracias al cambio geométrico de las alas durante el vuelo. Esta característica es conocida como (alas mórficas). En la naturaleza, no existe ningún especimen volador con semejante grado de dexteridad de vuelo, y se ha demostrado, que las fuerzas inerciales producidas por el batir de las alas juega un papel fundamental en los movimientos que orientan al animal en vuelo. Estas características pueden inspirar el diseño de un micro vehículo aéreo compuesto por alas mórficas con redundantes grados de libertad, y cuya proporción entre la masa de sus alas y el cuerpo del robot sea significativa. Esta tesis doctoral presenta el desarrollo de un novedoso robot aéreo inspirado en el mecanismo de ala mórfica de los murciélagos. El robot, llamado BaTboT, ha sido diseñado con parámetros morfológicos muy similares a los descritos por su símil biológico Cynopterus brachyotis. El estudio biológico de este especimen ha permitido la definición de criterios de diseño y modelos matemáticos que representan el comportamiento del robot, con el objetivo de imitar lo mejor posible la biomecánica de vuelo de los murciélagos. La biomecánica de vuelo está definida por dos tipos de movimiento de las alas: aleteo y cambio de forma. Intentar imitar como los murciélagos cambian la forma de sus alas con un prototipo artificial, requiere el análisis de métodos alternativos de actuación que se asemejen a la biomecánica de los músculos que actúan las alas, y evitar el uso de sistemas convencionales de actuación como servomotores ó motores DC. En este sentido, las aleaciones con memoria de forma, ó por sus siglas en inglés (SMA), las cuales son fibras de NiTinol que se contraen y expanden ante estímulos térmicos, han sido usados en este proyecto como músculos artificiales que actúan como bíceps y tríceps de las alas, proporcionando la funcionalidad de ala mórfica previamente descrita. De esta manera, los músculos de SMA son mecánicamente posicionados en una configuración antagonista que permite la rotación de las articulaciones del robot. Los actuadores son accionados mediante una señal de potencia la cual es regulada por un sistema de control encargado que los músculos de SMA respondan con la precisión y velocidad deseada. Este sistema de control mórfico de las alas permitirá al robot cambiar la forma de las mismas con el único propósito de mejorar el desempeño aerodinámico. Durante la fase de bajada del aleteo, las alas deben estar extendidas para incrementar la producción de fuerzas de sustentación. Al contrario, durante el ciclo de subida del aleteo, las alas deben contraerse para minimizar el área y reducir las fuerzas de fricción aerodinámica. El control de alas mórficas no solo mejora el desempeño aerodinámico, también impacta la generación de fuerzas inerciales las cuales son esenciales para maniobrar durante el vuelo. Con el objetivo de analizar como el cambio de geometría de las alas influye en la definición de maniobras y su efecto en la producción de fuerzas netas, simulaciones y experimentos han sido llevados a cabo para medir cómo distintos patrones de modulación de las alas influyen en la producción de aceleraciones lineales y angulares. Gracias a estas mediciones, se propone un control de vuelo, ó control de actitud, el cual incorpora información inercial de las alas para la definición de referencias de aceleración angular. El objetivo de esta novedosa estrategia de control radica en el incremento de fuerzas netas para la adecuada generación de movimiento (Fnet). Imitar como los murciélagos ajustan sus alas con el propósito de incrementar las fuerzas de sustentación y mejorar la maniobra en vuelo es definitivamente un tópico de mucho interés para el diseño de robots aéros mas eficientes. La propuesta de control de vuelo definida en este trabajo de investigación podría dar paso a una nueva forma de control de vuelo de robots aéreos que no necesitan del uso de partes mecánicas tales como alerones, etc. Este control también permitiría el desarrollo de vehículos con mayor capacidad de maniobra. El desarrollo de esta investigación se centra en cinco etapas: - Estudiar y analizar el vuelo de los murciélagos con el propósito de definir criterios de diseño y control. - Formular modelos matemáticos que describan la: i) cinemática de las alas, ii) dinámica, iii) aerodinámica, y iv) actuación usando SMA. Estos modelos permiten estimar la influencia de modular las alas en la producción de fuerzas netas. - Diseño y fabricación de BaTboT: i) estructura de las alas y el cuerpo, ii) mecanismo de actuación mórfico basado en SMA, iii) membrana de las alas, y iv) electrónica abordo. - Contro de vuelo compuesto por: i) control de la SMA (modulación de las alas) y ii) regulación de maniobra (actitud). - Experimentos: están enfocados en poder cuantificar cuales son los efectos que ejercen distintos perfiles de modulación del ala en el comportamiento aerodinámico e inercial. El objetivo es demostrar y validar la hipótesis planteada al inicio de esta investigación: mejorar eficiencia de vuelo gracias al novedoso control de orientación (actitud) propuesto en este trabajo. A lo largo del desarrollo de cada una de las cinco etapas, se irán presentando los retos, problemáticas y soluciones a abordar. Los experimentos son realizados utilizando un túnel de viento con la instrumentación necesaria para llevar a cabo las mediciones de desempeño respectivas. En los resultados se discutirá y demostrará que la inercia producida por las alas juega un papel considerable en el comportamiento dinámico y aerodinámico del sistema y como poder tomar ventaja de dicha característica para regular patrones de modulación de las alas que conduzcan a mejorar la eficiencia del robot en futuros vuelos.

A pterosaur bone bed with at least 47 individuals (wing spans: 0.65-2.35 m) of a new species is reported from southern Brazil from an interdunal lake deposit of a Cretaceous desert, shedding new light on several biological aspects of those flying reptiles. The material represents a new pterosaur, Caiuajara dobruskii gen. et sp. nov., that is the southermost occurrence of the edentulous clade Tapejaridae (Tapejarinae, Pterodactyloidea) recovered so far. Caiuajara dobruskii differs from all other members of this clade in several cranial features, including the presence of a ventral sagittal bony expansion projected inside the nasoantorbital fenestra, which is formed by the premaxillae; and features of the lower jaw, like a marked rounded depression in the occlusal concavity of the dentary. Ontogenetic variation of Caiuajara dobruskii is mainly reflected in the size and inclination of the premaxillary crest, changing from small and inclined (∼ 115°) in juveniles to large and steep (∼ 90°) in adults. No particular ontogenetic features are observed in postcranial elements. The available information suggests that this species was gregarious, living in colonies, and most likely precocial, being able to fly at a very young age, which might have been a general trend for at least derived pterosaurs.

This paper develops a Markovian jump model to describe the fault occurrence in a manipulator robot of three joints. This model includes the changes of operation points and the probability that a fault occurs in an actuator. After a fault, the robot works as a manipulator with free joints. Based on the developed model, a comparative study among three Markovian controllers, H(2), H(infinity), and mixed H(2)/H(infinity) is presented, applied in an actual manipulator robot subject to one and two consecutive faults.

This work presents an automated system for the measurement of form errors of mechanical components using an industrial robot. A three-probe error separation technique was employed to allow decoupling between the measured form error and errors introduced by the robotic system. A mathematical model of the measuring system was developed to provide inspection results by means of the solution of a system of linear equations. A new self-calibration procedure, which employs redundant data from several runs, minimizes the influence of probes zero-adjustment on the final result. Experimental tests applied to the measurement of straightness errors of mechanical components were accomplished and demonstrated the effectiveness of the employed methodology. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Simulated annealing (SA) is an optimization technique that can process cost functions with degrees of nonlinearities, discontinuities and stochasticity. It can process arbitrary boundary conditions and constraints imposed on these cost functions. The SA technique is applied to the problem of robot path planning. Three situations are considered here: the path is represented as a polyline; as a Bezier curve; and as a spline interpolated curve. In the proposed SA algorithm, the sensitivity of each continuous parameter is evaluated at each iteration increasing the number of accepted solutions. Background: Posterior reconstruction (PR) of the rhabdosphincter has been previously described during retropubic radical prostatectomy, and shorter times to return of urinary continence were reported using this technical modification. This technique has also been applied during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP); however, contradictory results have been reported. Objective: We describe here a modified technique for PR of the rhabdosphincter during RARP and report its impact on early recovery of urinary continence and on cystographic leakage rates. Design, setting, and participants: We analyzed 803 consecutive patients who underwent RARP by a single surgeon over a 12-mo period: 330 without performing PR and 473 with PR. Surgical procedure: The reconstruction was performed using two 6-in 3-0 Poliglecaprone sutures tied together. The free edge of the remaining Denonvillier`s fascia was identified after prostatectomy and approximated to the posterior aspect of the rhabdosphincter and the posterior median raphe using one arm of the continuous suture. The second layer of the reconstruction was then performed with the other arm of the suture, approximating the posterior lip of the bladder neck and vesicoprostatic muscle to the posterior urethral edge. Measurements: Continence rates were assessed with a self-administrated, validated questionnaire (Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite) at 1, 4, 12, and 24 wk after catheter removal. Continence was defined as the use of ""no absorbent pads."" Cystogram was performed in all patients on postoperative day 4 or 5 before catheter removal. Results and limitations: There was no significant difference between the groups with respect to patient age, body mass index, prostate-specific antigen levels, prostate weight, American Urological Association symptom score, estimated blood loss, operative time, number of nerve-sparing procedures, and days with catheter. In the PR group, the continence rates at 1, 4, 12, and 24 wk postoperatively were 22.7%, 42.7%, 91.8%, and 96.3%, respectively; in the non-PR group, the continence rates were 28.7%, 51.6%, 91.1%, and 97%, respectively. The modified PR technique resulted in significantly higher continence rates at 1 and 4 wk after catheter removal (p = 0.048 and 0.016, respectively), although the continence rates at 12 and 24 wk were not significantly affected (p = 0.908 and p = 0.741, respectively). The median interval to recovery of continence was also statistically significantly shorter in the PR group (median: 4 wk; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.39-4.61) when compared to the non-PR group (median: 6 wk; 95% CI: 5.18-6.82; log-rank test, p = 0.037). Finally, the incidence of cystographic leaks was lower in the PR group (0.4% vs 2.1%; p = 0.036). Although the patients` baseline characteristics were similar between the groups, the patients were not preoperatively randomized and unknown confounding factors may have influenced the results. Conclusions: Our modified PR combines the benefits of early recovery of continence reported with the original PR technique with a reinforced watertight closure of the posterior anastomotic wall. Shorter interval to recovery of continence and lower incidence of cystographic leaks were demonstrated with our PR technique when compared to RARP with no reconstruction. Background: Positive surgical margin (PSM) after radical prostatectomy (RP) has been shown to be an independent predictive factor for cancer recurrence. Several investigations have correlated clinical and histopathologic findings with surgical margin status after open RP. However, few studies have addressed the predictive factors for PSM after robot-assisted laparoscopic RP (RARP). Objective: We sought to identify predictive factors for PSMs and their locations after RARP. Design, setting, and participants: We prospectively analyzed 876 consecutive patients who underwent RARP from January 2008 to May 2009. Intervention: All patients underwent RARP performed by a single surgeon with previous experience of > 1500 cases. Measurements: Stepwise logistic regression was used to identify potential predictive factors for PSM. Three logistic regression models were built: (1) one using preoperative variables only, (2) another using all variables (preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative) combined, and (3) one created to identify potential predictive factors for PSM location. Preoperative variables entered into the models included age, body mass index (BMI), prostate-specific antigen, clinical stage, number of positive cores, percentage of positive cores, and American Urological Association symptom score. Intra-and postoperative variables analyzed were type of nerve sparing, presence of median lobe, percentage of tumor in the surgical specimen, gland size, histopathologic findings, pathologic stage, and pathologic Gleason grade. Results and limitations: In the multivariable analysis including preoperative variables, clinical stage was the only independent predictive factor for PSM, with a higher PSM rate for T3 versus T1c (odds ratio [OR]: 10.7; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.6-43.8) and for T2 versus T1c (OR: 2.9; 95% CI, 1.9-4.6). Considering pre-, intra-, and postoperative variables combined, percentage of tumor, pathologic stage, and pathologic Gleason score were associated with increased risk of PSM in the univariable analysis (p < 0.001 for all variables). However, in the multivariable analysis, pathologic stage (pT2 vs pT1; OR: 2.9; 95% CI, 1.9-4.6) and percentage of tumor in the surgical specimen (OR: 8.7; 95% CI, 2.2-34.5; p = 0.0022) were the only independent predictive factors for PSM. Finally, BMI was shown to be an independent predictive factor(OR: 1.1; 95% CI, 1.0-1.3; p = 0.0119) for apical PSMs, with increasing BMI predicting higher incidence of apex location. Because most of our patients were referred from other centers, the biopsy technique and the number of cores were not standardized in our series. Conclusions: Clinical stage was the only preoperative variable independently associated with PSM after RARP. Pathologic stage and percentage of tumor in the surgical specimen were identified as independent predictive factors for PSMs when analyzing pre-, intra-, and postoperative variables combined. Background: Several studies have shown that robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP) is feasible, with favorable complication rates and short hospital times. However, the early recovery of urinary continence remains a challenge to be overcome. Objective: We describe our technique of periurethral retropubic suspension stitch during RALP and report its impact on early recovery of urinary continence. Design, setting, and participants: We analyze prospectively 331 consecutive patients who underwent RALP, 94 without the placement of suspension stitch (group 1) and 237 with the application of the suspension stitch (group 2). Surgical procedure: The only difference between the groups was the placement of the puboperiurethral stitch after the ligation of the dorsal venous complex (DVC). The periurethral retropubic stitch was placed using a 12-in monofilament polyglytone suture on a CTI needle. The stitch was passed from right to left between the urethra and DVC, and then through the periostium on the pubic bone. The stitch was passed again through the DVC, and then through the pubic bone in a figure eight, and then tied. Measurements: Continence rates were assessed with a self-administered validated questionnaire (Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite [EPIC] at 1, 3, 6, and 12 mo after the procedure. Continence was defined as the use of no absorbent pads or no leakage of urine. Results and limitations: In group 1, the continence rate at 1, 3, 6, and 12 mo postoperatively was 33%, 83%, 94.7%, and 95.7%, respectively; in group 2, the continence rate was 40%, 92.8%, 97.9%, and 97.9%, respectively. The suspension technique resulted in significantly greater continence rates at 3 mo after RALP (p = 0.013). The median/mean interval to recovery of continence was also statistically significantly shorter in the suspension group (median: 6 wk; mean: 7.338 wk: 95% confidence interval [CI]: 6.387-8.288) compared to the non-suspension group (median: 7 wk; mean: 9.585 wk: 95% CI: 7.558-11.612; log rank test, p = 0.02). Conclusions: The suspension stitch during RALP resulted in a statistically significantly shorter interval to recovery of continence and higher continence rates at 3 mo after the procedure. Background: Widespread use of prostate-specific antigen screening has resulted in younger and healthier men being diagnosed with prostate cancer. Their demands and expectations of surgical intervention are much higher and cannot be adequately addressed with the classic trifecta outcome measures. Objective: A new and more comprehensive method for reporting outcomes after radical prostatectomy, the pentafecta, is proposed. Design, setting, and participants: From January 2008 through September 2009, details of 1111 consecutive patients who underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy performed by a single surgeon were retrospectively analyzed. Of 626 potent men, 332 who underwent bilateral nerve sparing and who had 1 yr of follow-up were included in the study group. Measurements: In addition to the traditional trifecta outcomes, two perioperative variables were included in the pentafecta: no postoperative complications and negative surgical margins. Patients who attained the trifecta and concurrently the two additional outcomes were considered as having achieved the pentafecta. A logistic regression model was created to evaluate independent factors for achieving the pentafecta. Results and limitations: Continence, potency, biochemical recurrence-free survival, and trifecta rates at 12 mo were 96.4%, 89.8%, 96.4%, and 83.1%, respectively. With regard to the perioperative outcomes, 93.4% had no postoperative complication and 90.7% had negative surgical margins. The pentafecta rate at 12 mo was 70.8%. On multivariable analysis, patient age (p = 0.001) was confirmed as the only factor independently associated with the pentafecta. Conclusions: A more comprehensive approach for reporting prostate surgery outcomes, the pentafecta, is being proposed. We believe that pentafecta outcomes more accurately represent patients` expectations after minimally invasive surgery for prostate cancer.
