First record of a smut fungus on Byblidaceae: Yelsemia lowrieana, a new species from Australia.

Yelsemia lowrieana sp . nov. (Ustilaginomycetes) is described and illustrated from Byblis rorida collected in northwestern Western Australia. Infected plants had galls filled with spores on stems and pedicels. The spores were unusual in that each could be separated from a dark outer spore wall. This is the first record of a smut fungus on the dicotyledonous host family Byblidaceae.

First record of Passalora calotropidis in Australia and its generic position

Passalora calotropidis has been found for the first time in Australia on rubber bush (Calotropis procera) in northern Queensland where it was associated with a damaging leaf spot disease. Analysis of sequence data of the ITS region indicated that P calotropidis belonged to a group that consisted of species of Pseudocercospora. The generic position of P calotropidis and its potential for biological control are discussed.

First record of Nematospora coryli in Australia and its association with dry rot of Citrus

Nematospora (Eremothecium) coryli was isolated from Citrus and identified for the first time in Australia. This insect-transmitted yeast was associated with dry rot in cultivated and native Citrus fruits. Although N. coryli is known as a serious seed pathogen of many tropical and sub-tropical plants, evidence is presented that it has been present and undetected in Queensland for at least ninety years.

First record of Erysiphe aquilegiae on a host outside the Ranunculaceae

Erysiphe aquilegiae (Erysiphaceae) is found for the first time on Catharanthus roseus, in the Apocynaceae. This fungus is previously known only on the Ranunculaceae. Aecidium sp. (Pucciniaceae) on Marsdenia sp. is reported for the first time from Australia.

First record of stubby-root nematode (Paratrichodorus porosus) associated with barley in Australia

High populations (5000 to 20 000/kg soil) of the stubby-root nematode Paratrichodorus porosus were identified morphologically from soil samples taken under patches of poorly growing barley in a field between Yuleba and Surat in western Queensland, Australia. Lower populations (<4000/kg soil) were recovered from soil samples taken from asymptomatic barley. This is the first record of this nematode species on barley in Australia.

First record of gynaikothrips uzeu (Zimmermann) (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) from Australia

Gynaikothrips uzeli (Zimmermann) is newly recorded from Queensland, Australia, causing leaf galls on ornamental figs. Gynaikothrips uzeli is considered a pest of Fiats benjamina (Moraceae) (Weeping fig) in southern Asia and America.

First Record of the Ragged-tooth Shark, Odontaspis ferox, off the U.S. Atlantic Coast

On 11 September 1994, a large shark was captured and later identified as the ragged-tooth shark, Odontaspis ferox (Risso). The shark was captured during routine bottom trawl survey operations onboard the NOAA R/V Albatross IV, approximately 25 n.mi. south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. (lat. 34° 51' N, long. 75° 26' W) with a “36 Yankee” bottom trawl towed at 3.5 knots. Average water depth at the time of capture was 173 m, bottom temperature was 17.8°C, and salinity was 36.41‰. First record of a yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) from the stomach of a longnose lancetfish (Alepisaurus ferox)

In 1987 we found a juvenile yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares (Bonnaterre, 1788), in the stomach of a longnose lancetfish, Alepisaurus ferox Lowe, 1833. Analysis of published information on lancetfish food habits (Haedrich, 1964, 1969; Haedrich and Nielsen, 1966; Parin, 1968; Parin et al., 1969; Fourmanoir, 1969; Grandperrin and Legand, 1970; Kubota and Uyeno, 1970; Legand et al., 1972; Kubota, 1973; Fujita and Hattori, 1976; Matthews et al., 1977) led us to conclude that this was the first record of a yellowfin tuna found in a lancetfish stomach.
