We study the growth dynamics of the size of manufacturing firms considering competition and normal distribution of competency. We start with the fact that all components of the system struggle with each other for growth as happened in real competitive business world. The detailed quantitative agreement of the theory with empirical results of firms growth based on a large economic database spanning over 20 years is good with a single set of the parameters for all the curves. Further, the empirical data of the variation of the standard deviation of the growth rate with the size of the firm are in accordance with the present theory rather than a simple power law. Family businesses dominate in a majority of economies (Astrachan and Shanker, 2003; Chrisman, Chua, and Sharma, 2005; Morck and Yeung, 2004). As entrepreneurial activities have been shown to be central to economic growth it is essential that family businesses, irrespective of ownership patterns, not only survive but also grow thus growing the economy overall. While a great deal is known about entrepreneurial activities and a body of knowledge is being developed in relation to entrepreneurial processes in family firms, more needs to be understood in relation to the dynamics of entrepreneurial activities at the individual family firm level. One area of particular interest is the dynamics within the business and the family and how these dynamics impact upon entrepreneurial activities. Specifically how relationships between and among family members engaged in the business can interact with professional non-family member senior executives. The senior executives can actively use their positions in such ways that initiatives suggested by family members are less successful than they might be. This paper addresses how ‘family’ aspects of a business can assist or impede the entrepreneurial activities of individuals. It takes into account some of the unique features of family businesses – such as the importance of ‘familiness’ as a competitive advantage; the direct links between ownership and control of a business and the recognition (often implicit) that individuals in families do make a difference to how the business functions (Habbershon and Williams, 1999, Sharma, 2004; and Tokarczyk, Hansen Green, and Down, 2007). This emphasis on individuals in families fits well with the idea of entrepreneur as individual, as expressed by Schumpeter (1934), Baumol et al (2007). The theoretical approach that adopted to explore the dynamics of processes occurring within family firms is structuration theory combined with a theory of embeddeness (Dacin, Ventresca and Beal, 1999; Giddens, 1979, 1984, Jack and Anderson, 2002; and Sarason, Dean and Dillard, 2006).

Plants subjected to increases in the supply of resource(s) limiting growth may allocate more of those resources to existing leaves, increasing photosynthetic capacity, and/or to production of more leaves, increasing whole-plant photosynthesis. The responses of three populations of the alpine willow, Salix glauca, growing along an alpine topographic sequence representing a gradient in soil moisture and organic matter, and thus potential N supply, to N amendments, were measured over two growing seasons, to elucidate patterns of leaf versus shoot photosynthetic responses. Leaf-(foliar N, photosynthesis rates, photosynthetic N-use efficiency) and shoot-(leaf area per shoot, number of leaves per shoot, stem weight, N resorption efficiency) level measurements were made to examine the spatial and temporal variation in these potential responses to increased N availability. The predominant response of the willows to N fertilization was at the shoot-level, by production of greater leaf area per shoot. Greater leaf area occurred due to production of larger leaves in both years of the experiment and to production of more leaves during the second year of fertilization treatment. Significant leaf-level photosynthetic response occurred only during the first year of treatment, and only in the dry meadow population. Variation in photosynthesis rates was related more to variation in stomatal conductance than to foliar N concentration. Stomatal conductance in turn was significantly related to N fertilization. Differences among the populations in photosynthesis, foliar N, leaf production, and responses to N fertilization indicate N availability may be lowest in the dry meadow population, and highest in the ridge population. This result is contrary to the hypothesis that a gradient of plant available N corresponds with a snowpack/topographic gradient.

The age and growth dynamics of the spinner shark (Carcharhinus brevipinna) in the northwest Atlantic Ocean off the southeast United States and in the Gulf of Mexico were examined and four growth models were used to examine variation in the ability to fit size-at-age data. The von Bertalanffy growth model, an alternative equation of the von Bertalanffy growth model with a size-at-birth intercept, the Gompertz growth model, and a logistic model were fitted to sex-specific observed size-at-age data. Considering the statistical criteria (e.g., lowest mean square error [MSE], high coefficient-of-determination, and greatest level of significance) we desired for this study, the logistic model provided the best overall fit to the size-at-age data, whereas the von Bertalanffy growth model gave the worst. For “biological validity,” the von Bertalanffy model for female sharks provided estimates similar to those reported in other studies. However, the von Bertalanffy model was deemed inappropriate for describing the growth of male spinner sharks because estimates of theoretical maximum size (L∞) indicated a size much larger than that observed in the field. However, the growth coefficient (k= 0.14/yr) from the Gompertz model provided an estimate most similar to that reported for other large coastal species. The analysis of growth for spinner shark in the present study demonstrates the importance of fitting alternative models when standard models fit the data poorly or when growth estimates do not appear to be realistic.

The effect of potassium dichromate in concentrations of 0.5 to 10 mg/l on a laboratory culture of Sc. quadricauda algae was studied in standard conditions. The total cell numbers decreased at potassium dichromate concentrations over 1 mg/l, and the proportion of living cells decreased at all studied concentrations. A positive correlation was found between changes in cell size and their numbers at toxin concentrations of 1 and 3 mg/l, and a negative correlation was found between the relative size and the cell numbers at 3 and 10 mg/l. This may be due to different intensity of growth inhibition and cell division under the influence of the toxin. The culture sensitivity to the toxin increased in autumn and decreased in the spring.

The use of bioluminescence was evaluated as a tool to study Pseudomonas syringae population dynamics in susceptible and resistant plant environments. Plasmid pGLITE, containing the luxCDABE genes from Photorhabdus luminescens, was introduced into Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola race 7 strain 1449B, a Gram-negative pathogen of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Bacteria recovered from plant tissue over a five-day period were enumerated by counting numbers of colony forming units and by measurement of bioluminescence. Direct measurement of bioluminescence from leaf disc homogenates consistently reflected bacterial growth as determined by viable counting, but also detected subtle effects of the plant resistance response on bacterial viability. This bioluminescence procedure enables real time measurement of bacterial metabolism and population dynamics in planta, obviates the need to carry out labour intensive and time consuming traditional enumeration techniques and provides a sensitive assay for studying plant effects on bacterial cells.

The benthic dinoflagellate O. ovata represents a serious threat for human health and for the ecology of its blooming areas: thanks to its toxicity this microalga has been responsible for several cases of human intoxication and mass mortalities of benthic invertebrates. Although the large number of studies on this dinoflagellate, the mechanisms underpinning O. ovata growth and toxin production are still far to be fully understood. In this work we have enriched the dataset on this species by carrying out a new experiment on an Adriatic O. cf. ovata strain. Data from this experiment (named Beta) and from another comparable experiment previously conducted on the same strain (named Alpha), revealed some interesting aspects of this dinoflagellate: it is able to grow also in a condition of strong intracellular nutrient deficiency (C:P molar ratio > 400; C:N > 25), reaching extremely low values of chlorophyll-a to carbon ratio (0.0004). Was also found a significant inverse relationships (r > -0.7) between cellular toxin to carbon and cellular nutrient to carbon ratios of experiment Alpha. In the light of these result, we hypothesized that in O. cf. ovata nutrient-stress conditions (intended as intracellular nutrient deficiency) can cause: i) an increase in toxin production; ii) a strong decrease in chlorophyll-a synthesis; iii) a lowering of metabolism associated with the formation of a sort of resting stage. We then used a modelling approach to test and critically evaluate these hypotheses in a mechanistic way: newly developed formulation describing toxin production and fate, and ad hoc changes in the already existent formulations describing chlorophyll synthesis, rest respiration, and mortality, have been incorporated in a simplified version of the European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model (ERSEM), together with a new ad hoc parameterization. The adapted model was able to accurately reproduce many of the trends observed in the Alpha experiment, allowing us to support our hypotheses. Instead the simulations of the experiment Beta were not fully satisfying in quantitative terms. We explained this gap with the presumed different physiological behaviors between the algae of the two experiments, due to the different pre-experimental periods of acclimation: the model was not able to reproduce acclimation processes in its simulations of the experiment Beta. Thus we attempt to simulate the acclimation of the algae to nutrient-stress conditions by manual intervention on some parameters of nutrient-stress thresholds, but we received conflicting results. Further studies are required to shed light on this interesting aspect. In this work we also improve the range of applicability of a state of the art marine biogeochemical model (ERSEM) by implementing in it an ecological relevant process such as the production of toxic compounds.
