The objective of this thesis work was to assess axial misalignment in fatigue loaded welds using the effective notch method. As a result, the fatigue behaviour of non-load carrying cruciform fillet welded joint under cyclic tensile loading has been studied. Various degrees of axial misalignment have been found in one series of non-load carrying cruciform fillet welded joints used in a laboratory investigation. As a result, it was important to carry out a comprehensive investigation since axial misalignment forms part of thequality of fatigue loaded structure and can reduce the fatigue strength. To extend the study, the correlation between fatigue strength and stress ratio, as well as stress concentration factor, were also studied. Moreover, a closer investigation of place of crack initiation and its dependence on weld sequence and imperfections of test specimen (angular distortion) was studied. For the fatigue class calculations, FEM (finite element method) and the effectivenotch approach are used. The addressed variable is the axial misalignment whichis introduce by modeling the entire joint. Fracture mechanics based calculations are also used and quantitatively compared with effective notch and experimental results.

It is commonly observed that complex fabricated structures subject tofatigue loading fail at the welded joints. Some problems can be corrected by proper detail design but fatigue performance can also be improved using post-weld improvement methods. In general, improvement methods can be divided into two main groups: weld geometry modification methods and residual stress modification methods. The former remove weld toe defects and/or reduce the stress concentrationwhile the latter introduce compressive stress fields in the area where fatigue cracks are likely to initiate. Ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) is a novel post-weld treatment method that influences both the residual stress distribution andimproves the local geometry of the weld. The structural fatigue strength of non-load carrying attachments in the as-welded condition has been experimentally compared to the structural fatigue strength of ultrasonic impact treated welds. Longitudinal attachment specimens made of two thicknesses of steel S355 J0 have been tested for determining the efficiency of ultrasonic impacttreatment. Treated welds were found to have about 50% greater structural fatigue strength, when the slope of the S-N-curve is three. High mean stress fatigue testing based on the Ohta-method decreased the degree of weld improvement only 19%. This indicated that the method could be also applied for large fabricated structures operating under high reactive residual stresses equilibrated within the volume of the structure. The thickness of specimens has no significant effect tothe structural fatigue strength. The fatigue class difference between 5 mm and 8 mm specimen was only 8%. It was hypothesized that the UIT method added a significant crack initiation period to the total fatigue life of the welded joints. Crack initiation life was estimated by a local strain approach. Material parameters were defined using a modified Uniform Material Law developed in Germany. Finite element analysis and X-ray diffraction were used to define, respectively, the stress concentration and mean stress. The theoretical fatigue life was found to have good accuracy comparing to experimental fatigue tests. The predictive behaviour of the local strain approach combined with the uniformmaterial law was excellent for the joint types and conditions studied in this work.

The future of high technology welded constructions will be characterised by higher strength materials and improved weld quality with respect to fatigue resistance. The expected implementation of high quality high strength steel welds will require that more attention be given to the issues of crack initiation and mechanical mismatching. Experiments and finite element analyses were performed within the framework of continuum damage mechanics to investigate the effect of mismatching of welded joints on void nucleation and coalescence during monotonic loading. It was found that the damage of undermatched joints mainly occurred in the sandwich layer and the damageresistance of the joints decreases with the decrease of the sandwich layer width. The damage of over-matched joints mainly occurred in the base metal adjacent to the sandwich layer and the damage resistance of the joints increases with thedecrease of the sandwich layer width. The mechanisms of the initiation of the micro voids/cracks were found to be cracking of the inclusions or the embrittled second phase, and the debonding of the inclusions from the matrix. Experimental fatigue crack growth rate testing showed that the fatigue life of under-matched central crack panel specimens is longer than that of over-matched and even-matched specimens. Further investigation by the elastic-plastic finite element analysis indicated that fatigue crack closure, which originated from the inhomogeneousyielding adjacent to the crack tip, played an important role in the fatigue crack propagation. The applicability of the J integral concept to the mismatched specimens with crack extension under cyclic loading was assessed. The concept of fatigue class used by the International Institute of Welding was introduced in the parametric numerical analysis of several welded joints. The effect of weld geometry and load condition on fatigue strength of ferrite-pearlite steel joints was systematically evaluated based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. Joint types included lap joints, angle joints and butt joints. Various combinations of the tensile and bending loads were considered during the evaluation with the emphasis focused on the existence of both root and toe cracks. For a lap joint with asmall lack-of-penetration, a reasonably large weld leg and smaller flank angle were recommended for engineering practice in order to achieve higher fatigue strength. It was found that the fatigue strength of the angle joint depended strongly on the location and orientation of the preexisting crack-like welding defects, even if the joint was welded with full penetration. It is commonly believed that the double sided butt welds can have significantly higher fatigue strength than that of a single sided welds, but fatigue crack initiation and propagation can originate from the weld root if the welding procedure results in a partial penetration. It is clearly shown that the fatigue strength of the butt joint could be improved remarkably by ensuring full penetration. Nevertheless, increasing the fatigue strength of a butt joint by increasing the size of the weld is an uneconomical alternative.

Työssä tutkittiin Kempin WiseRoot-prosessilla hitsattujen päittäisliitosten väsymiskestävyyttä laboratoriokokein ja väsymiskestävyyden mitoitusmenetelmillä. WiseRoot-hitsausprosessi on räätälöity lyhytkaariprosessi juuripalkojen hitsaukseen yhdeltä puolelta.

International Institute of Welding suosittelee käyttämään elementtimenetelmässä hitsin rajaviivoilla sekä juuressa fiktiivistä 1 mm pyöristystä, jonka avulla tehollinen lovijännitys määritetään. Kaikille liitostyypeille sovelletaan samaa, kaltevuudeltaan m = 3 olevaa SN-käyrää, jolloin maksimipääjännitystä vastaava väsymisluokka FAT saa arvon 225. Nykyisiä mitoitusohjeita on pidetty kuitenkin liian konservatiivisina, etenkin jos kyseessä on suurilujuuksisesta teräksestä valmistettu korkealaatuinen hitsi. Rajaviivalla vaikuttavaa lovijännitystä on tutkittu mallintamalla liitokset FEMAP – elementtimenetelmäohjelmalla varioimalla rajaviivan pyöristystä. Elementtimenetelmän tuloksia on verrattu analyyttisiin loven muotoluvun laskentakaavoihin. Suurin osa koesauvoista on väsytetty käyttämällä jännityssuhdetta R < 0,11. Koesauvat on jaoteltu jännityssuhteen sekä liitostyypin mukaan. Kaikkien koekappaleiden karakteristiseksi väsymisluokan arvoksi on määritetty FAT 200. Alle 0,11 jännityssuhteella väsytettyjen koekappaleiden karakteristinen väsymisluokka on FAT 230 ja isoilla jännityssuhteilla väsytettyjen FAT 126. Tulosten perusteella nykyiset mitoitusohjeet eivät ole liian konservatiivisia. Väsymisluokkaa FAT 225 voidaan käyttää väsymislaskennassa, mikäli rakenteen kuormitusten suhde on alle 0,1.

Ensimmäinen koe suoritettiin värähtelyllä hyödyntäen rakenneputken ominaistaajuutta, jolloin kuormituksen rajajännityssuhde on -1. Toinen väsytyskoe suoritettiin rakenneputkista leikatuille väsytyssauvoille, missä pituussuuntainen HF –hitsi on keskellä sauvaa. Tämä väsytyskoe suoritettiin vetotykytyksellä rajajännityssuhteella 0,1. Väsytyskokeissa havaittiin, että kiinnityshitsi täyttää sille asetetut vaatimukset, koska murtumat tapahtuivat perusaineesta. Tällöin koetuloksia vertaillaan Eurokoodi 3:n perusaineen väsymisluokkaan 160, SN -käyrän kaltevuudella m = 5. Kaikkien koetulosten väsymiskestävyysluokan keskiarvoksi saatiin 185 95 %:n todennäköisyydellä. Tutkimuksessa saatiin arvokasta tietoa kahden eri materiaalin väsymislujuudesta. Materiaalilla ei kuitenkaan havaittu vaikutusta lujuuteen. Eri jälkikäsittelyt eli juuren puolen metallipurseen höyläys tai pituussuuntaisen hitsisauman hehkutus eivät vaikuttaneet väsymislujuuteen. Kokeissa väsymismurtuma ydintyi rakenneputken pinnalta olevista alkuvioista, joten putkien käsittelyä valmistuksen jälkeen voitaisiin parantaa.

The performance optimisation of overhead conductors depends on the systematic investigation of the fretting fatigue mechanisms in the conductor/clamping system. As a consequence, a fretting fatigue rig was designed and a limited range of fatigue tests was carried out at the middle high cycle fatigue regime in order to access an exploratory S-N curve for a Grosbeak conductor, which was mounted on a mono-articulated aluminium clamping system. Subsequent to these preliminary fatigue tests, the components of the conductor/clamping system, such as ACSR conductor, upper and lower clamps, bolt and nuts, were subjected to a failure analysis procedure in order to investigate the metallurgical free variables interfering on the fatigue test results, aiming at the optimisation of the testing reproducibility. The results indicated that the rupture of the planar fracture surfaces observed in the external At strands of the conductor tested under lower bending amplitude (0.9 mm) occurred by fatigue cracking (I mm deep), followed by shear overload. The V-type fracture surfaces observed in some At strands of the conductor tested under higher bending amplitude (1.3 mm) were also produced by fatigue cracking (approximately 400 mu m deep), followed by shear overload. Shear overload fracture (45 degrees fracture surface) was also observed on the remaining At wires of the conductor tested under higher bending amplitude (1.3 mm). Additionally, the upper and lower Al-cast clamps presented microstructure-sensitive cracking, which was folowed by particle detachment and formation of abrasive debris on the clamp/conductor tribo-interface, promoting even further the fretting mechanism. The detrimental formation of abrasive debris might be inhibited by the selection of a more suitable class of as-cast At alloy for the production of clamps. Finally, the bolt/nut system showed intense degradation of the carbon steel nut (fabricated in ferritic-pearlitic carbon steel, featuring machined threads with 190 HV), with intense plastic deformation and loss of material. Proper selection of both the bolt and nut materials and the finishing processing might prevent the loss in the clamping pressure during the fretting testing. It is important to control the specification of these components (clamps, bolt and nuts) prior to the start of large scale fretting fatigue testing of the overhead conductors in order to increase the reproducibility of this assessment. We study the effect of strong heterogeneities on the fracture of disordered materials using a fiber bundle model. The bundle is composed of two subsets of fibers, i.e. a fraction 0 ≤ α ≤ 1 of fibers is unbreakable, while the remaining 1 - α fraction is characterized by a distribution of breaking thresholds. Assuming global load sharing, we show analytically that there exists a critical fraction of the components αc which separates two qualitatively diferent regimes of the system: below αc the burst size distribution is a power law with the usual exponent Ƭ= 5/2, while above αc the exponent switches to a lower value Ƭ = 9/4 and a cutoff function occurs with a diverging characteristic size. Analyzing the macroscopic response of the system we demonstrate that the transition is conditioned to disorder distributions where the constitutive curve has a single maximum and an inflexion point defining a novel universality class of breakdown phenomena

Thermal cutting methods, are commonly used in the manufacture of metal parts. Thermal cutting processes separate materials by using heat. The process can be done with or without a stream of cutting oxygen. Common processes are Oxygen, plasma and laser cutting. It depends on the application and material which cutting method is used. Numerically-controlled thermal cutting is a cost-effective way of prefabricating components. One design aim is to minimize the number of work steps in order to increase competitiveness. This has resulted in the holes and openings in plate parts manufactured today being made using thermal cutting methods. This is a problem from the fatigue life perspective because there is local detail in the as-welded state that causes a rise in stress in a local area of the plate. In a case where the static utilization of a net section is full used, the calculated linear local stresses and stress ranges are often over 2 times the material yield strength. The shakedown criteria are exceeded. Fatigue life assessment of flame-cut details is commonly based on the nominal stress method. For welded details, design standards and instructions provide more accurate and flexible methods, e.g. a hot-spot method, but these methods are not universally applied to flame cut edges. Some of the fatigue tests of flame cut edges in the laboratory indicated that fatigue life estimations based on the standard nominal stress method can give quite a conservative fatigue life estimate in cases where a high notch factor was present. This is an undesirable phenomenon and it limits the potential for minimizing structure size and total costs. A new calculation method is introduced to improve the accuracy of the theoretical fatigue life prediction method of a flame cut edge with a high stress concentration factor. Simple equations were derived by using laboratory fatigue test results, which are published in this work. The proposed method is called the modified FAT method (FATmod). The method takes into account the residual stress state, surface quality, material strength class and true stress ratio in the critical place.

Birnbaum-Saunders models have largely been applied in material fatigue studies and reliability analyses to relate the total time until failure with some type of cumulative damage. In many problems related to the medical field, such as chronic cardiac diseases and different types of cancer, a cumulative damage caused by several risk factors might cause some degradation that leads to a fatigue process. In these cases, BS models can be suitable for describing the propagation lifetime. However, since the cumulative damage is assumed to be normally distributed in the BS distribution, the parameter estimates from this model can be sensitive to outlying observations. In order to attenuate this influence, we present in this paper BS models, in which a Student-t distribution is assumed to explain the cumulative damage. In particular, we show that the maximum likelihood estimates of the Student-t log-BS models attribute smaller weights to outlying observations, which produce robust parameter estimates. Also, some inferential results are presented. In addition, based on local influence and deviance component and martingale-type residuals, a diagnostics analysis is derived. Finally, a motivating example from the medical field is analyzed using log-BS regression models. Since the parameter estimates appear to be very sensitive to outlying and influential observations, the Student-t log-BS regression model should attenuate such influences. The model checking methodologies developed in this paper are used to compare the fitted models.

Shape memory materials (SMMs) represent an important class of smart materials that have the ability to return from a deformed state to their original shape. Thanks to such a property, SMMs are utilized in a wide range of innovative applications. The increasing number of applications and the consequent involvement of industrial players in the field have motivated researchers to formulate constitutive models able to catch the complex behavior of these materials and to develop robust computational tools for design purposes. Such a research field is still under progress, especially in the prediction of shape memory polymer (SMP) behavior and of important effects characterizing shape memory alloy (SMA) applications. Moreover, the frequent use of shape memory and metallic materials in biomedical devices, particularly in cardiovascular stents, implanted in the human body and experiencing millions of in-vivo cycles by the blood pressure, clearly indicates the need for a deeper understanding of fatigue/fracture failure in microsize components. The development of reliable stent designs against fatigue is still an open subject in scientific literature. Motivated by the described framework, the thesis focuses on several research issues involving the advanced constitutive, numerical and fatigue modeling of elastoplastic and shape memory materials. Starting from the constitutive modeling, the thesis proposes to develop refined phenomenological models for reliable SMA and SMP behavior descriptions. Then, concerning the numerical modeling, the thesis proposes to implement the models into numerical software by developing implicit/explicit time-integration algorithms, to guarantee robust computational tools for practical purposes. The described modeling activities are completed by experimental investigations on SMA actuator springs and polyethylene polymers. Finally, regarding the fatigue modeling, the thesis proposes the introduction of a general computational approach for the fatigue-life assessment of a classical stent design, in order to exploit computer-based simulations to prevent failures and modify design, without testing numerous devices.

This study examined the effects of skipping breakfast on selected aspects of children's cognition, specifically their memory (both immediate and one week following presentation of stimuli), mental tempo, and problem solving accuracy. Test instruments used included the Hagen Central/Incidental Recall Test, Matching Familiar Figures Test, McCarthy Digit Span and Tapping Tests. The study population consisted of 39 nine-to eleven year old healthy children who were admitted for overnight stays at a clinical research setting for two nights approximately one week apart. The study was designed to be able to adequately monitor and control subjects' food consumption. The design chosen was the cross-over design where randomly on either the first or second visit, the child skipped breakfast. In this way, subjects acted as their own controls. Subjects were tested at noon of both visits, this representing an 18-hour fast.^ Analysis focused on whether or not fasting for this period of time affected an individual's performance. Results indicated that for most of the tests, subjects were not significantly affected by skipping breakfast for one morning. However, on tests of short-term central and incidental recall, subjects who had skipped breakfast recalled significantly more of the incidental cues although they did so at no apparent expense to their storing of central information. In the area of problem-solving accuracy, subjects skipping breakfast at time two made significantly more errors on hard sections of the MFF Test. It should be noted that although a large number of tests were conducted, these two tests showed the only significant differences.^ These significant results in the areas of short-term incidental memory and in problem solving accuracy were interpreted as being an effect of subject fatigue. That is, when subjects missed breakfast, they were more likely to become fatigued and in the novel environment presented in the study setting, it is probable that these subjects responded by entering Class II fatigue which is characterized by behavioral excitability, diffused attention and altered performance patterns. ^
