Recent vacuum system development with an XHV condition for the particle accelerators is briefly described. The progress of selecting and treatment of the materials used in XHV systems is introduced, and the choice of the main pump for an XHV system and some new pumping method are presented. Some leak detection experiences both for the superconducting and warm vacuum systems are recommended and the status of XHV measurement and the gauge calibration are introduced.

Polycrystalline diamond coatings have been grown on unpolished side of Si(100) wafers by hot filament chemical vapour deposition process. The morphology of the grown coatings has been varied from cauliflower morphology to faceted morphology by manipulation of the growth temperature from 700 degrees C to 900 degrees C and methane gas concentration from 3% to 1.5%. It is found that the coefficient of friction of the coatings under high vacuum of 133.32 x 10(-7) Pa (10(-7) torr) with nanocrystalline grains can be manipulated to 0.35 to enhance tribological behaviour of bare Si substrates.

As the study of electrical breakdown phenomena in vacuum systems, gains more importance, a thorough understanding of the breakdown mechanism at high voltages necessitates a chamber for experimental studies. An epoxy-resin chamber has been constructed by casting ring sections which were joined together. The advantages of such a chamber over the conventional metal or glass chamber are given especially as regards the electric field configuration, high voltage lead-in, and the ease of construction. Special facilities can be incorporated while constructing the chamber which makes it more versatile; for example, in pre-breakdown current measurements, electron beam focusing studies, etc.

Although some researchers have published friction and wear data of Plasma Nitride (PN) coatings, the tribological behavior of PN/PN Pairs in high vacuum environment has not been published so far In order to bridge this knowledge gap, tribological tests under dry conditions have been conducted on PN/PN Pairs for varying temperatures of 25, 200, 400 and 500 degrees C in high vacuum (1.6 x 10(-4) bar) environment. The PN coatings showed good wear resistance layer on the ring surface. The PN coatings were removed only from the pin surface for all the tests since it contacts at a point. The friction and wear were low at lower temperatures and it eliminated adhesion between the contact surfaces until the coating was completely removed from the pin surface. ZnS nanostructures were grown on Si substrates in high vacuum by modified thermal evaporation technique. Morphology, chemical composition and structural properties of grown ZnS nanostructures were studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscope (TEM). SEM studies showed that morphology of the grown structures varies with incident flux and source temperature. TEM studies showed that grown nanostructures are single crystalline in nature without structural defects such as stacking faults and twins. No catalytic particle was included in this growth process, and hence these micro and nanostructures were assumed to grow by VS mechanism.

A potentiometric device based on interfacing a solid electrolyte oxygen ion conductor with a thin platinum film acts as a robust, reproducible sensor for the detection of hydrocarbons in high- or ultrahigh-vacuum environments. Sensitivities in the order of approximately 5 x 10(-10) mbar are achievable under open circuit conditions, with good selectivity for discrimination between n-butane on one hand and toluene, n-octane, n-hexane, and 1-butene on the other hand. The sensor's sensitivity may be tuned by operating under constant current (closed circuit) conditions; injection of anodic current is also a very effective means of restoring a clean sensing surface at any desired point. XPS data and potentiometric measurements confirm the proposed mode of sensing action: the steady-state coverage of Oa, which sets the potential of the Pt sensing electrode, is determined by the partial pressure and dissociative sticking probability of the impinging hydrocarbon. The principles established here provide the basis for a viable, inherently flexible, and promising means for the sensitive and selective detection of hydrocarbons under demanding conditions.

The morphology of films of isotactic polypropylene poly (3-dodecylthiophene) and iPP/P3DDT blend formed in electrostatic fields has been investigated by using scanning electron microscope. The experiment results show that the micro-crystal morphology of polymer films was strongly dependent on electrostatic fields. It was found that the effect of the electrostatic field led to the formation of dendrite crystals aligned in the field direction, and some branches of P3DDT ruptured. However, the micro-crystals in these films grew into spherulites without electrostatic field, and have no crystal orientation.

This paper explores the possibility of combining moderate vacuum frying followed by post-frying high vacuum application during the oil drainage stage, with the aim to reduce oil content in potato chips. Potato slices were initially vacuum fried under two operating conditions (140 °C, 20 kPa and 162 °C, 50.67 kPa) until the moisture content reached 10 and 15 % (wet basis), prior to holding the samples in the head space under high vacuum level (1.33 kPa). This two-stage process was found to lower significantly the amount of oil taken up by potato chips by an amount as high as 48 %, compared to drainage at the same pressure as the frying pressure. Reducing the pressure value to 1.33 kPa reduced the water saturation temperature (11 °C), causing the product to continuously lose moisture during the course of drainage. Continuous release of water vapour prevented the occluded surface oil from penetrating into the product structure and released it from the surface of the product. When frying and drainage occurred at the same pressure, the temperature of the product fell below the water saturation temperature soon after it was lifted out of the oil, which resulted in the oil getting sucked into the product. Thus, lowering the pressure after frying to a value well below the frying pressure is a promising method to lower oil uptake by the product.
