Streptozotocin-diabetic rats were treated for 17 days with a decoction of Eugenia jambolana (Myrtaceae) leaves (15%, w/v) as a substitute for water. Body weight, food and fluid intake, urine volume, glycemia, urinary glucose and urea were evaluated every 5 days. The animals were sacrificed by decapitation and blood samples collected for the determination of glycemia, serum cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and angiotensin-converting enzyme. The weight of adipose and muscle tissues was also determined. There were no statistically significant differences between treated and untreated rats for any of the biochemical or physiological parameters. We conclude that, at least in this experimental model, Eugenia jambolana leaf decoction has no antidiabetic activity.

The fruit of Indian Eugenia jambolana have been shown to have therapeutic properties, but because the therapeutic potential of a plant is related to the geographic region in which the plant was grown and to the part of the plant used, we investigated Brazilian Eugenia jambolana fruit using the same preparation and experimental methods as have been used in India. The well-established metabolic cage model was used to evaluate the physiological and metabolic parameters associated with streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats (n = 10) which had been administered, by gavage, 50 mg per day of lyophilised Eugenia jambolana fruit-pulp extract for 41 days. We found that, compared to untreated controls, rats treated with the lyophilised fruit-pulp showed no observable difference in body weight, food or water intake, urine volume, glycaemia, urinary urea and glucose, hepatic glycogen, or on serum levels of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol or triglycerides. No change was observed in the masses of epididymal or retroperitoneal adipose tissue or of soleus or extensor digitorum longus muscles. This lack of any apparent effect on the diabetes may be attributable to the regional ecosystem where the fruit was collected and/or to the severity of the induced diabetes. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.. Plants that possess a diuretic effect are widely used by people in the treatment of some important diseases as edema and hypertension. The objective of this work was to study the effects of pitanga and jambos aqueous extracts (AE) about the arterial pressure (AP) and urinary flow (V) in normotensive and anesthetized rats. The AE were prepared for the decoction method and administrated for intragastric way in different concentrations: 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. These concentrations corresponded respectively at doses of 56, 94, 145, 172 mg of pitanga dried extract /Kg and 44, 73, 83, 95 mg of jambos dried extract/Kg. The animals were divided in nine groups with seven individuals (n=7): control (C), P-10%, P-15%, P-20%, P-25%, J-10%, J-15%, J-20% and J-25%. The rats were anesthetized (hypnol 3%) and submitted to tracheotomy. The left carotide artery was catheterized to measure the AP through a mercury manometer, in periods of 15 minutes. The bladder was catheterized for urine collection and to measure the V, in periods of 30 minutes. The experimental protocol was divided in four periods of 30 minutes each: basal (to evaluate of the basal parameters) and experimental (Exp) 1, 2 and 3 (after the administration of the AE). The results were analyzed for ANOVA and Tukey (X±SD, p<0.05). In the C group did have not alteration of the AP basal but the V basal increased. In the experimental groups (AE of P and J) had significative decline in the AP basal: 34% (P-10%), 20% (P-15%), 21% (P-20%), 31% (P-25%), 24% (J-10%), 20% (J-15%) 16% (J-20%) and 29% (J-25%). Moreover, the administration of AE increased the V basal in: 280% (P-15%) and 192% (J-20%). The results showed that the plants evaluated are hypotensive and diuretic.

O Brasil apresenta regiões com grande diversidade geográfica proporcionando o desenvolvimento de diferentes espécies vegetais, favorecendo a busca por bioativos com fins terapêuticos. Nos últimos anos, fungos endofíticos vêm sendo considerados fontes importantes de produtos naturais, demonstrando atividades biológicas de interesses terapêuticos. Pesquisas apontam que extratos brutos oriundos de fungos endofíticos da Eugenia jambolana demonstram atividades antineoplásicas e antimicrobianas. No presente estudo verificou-se a atividade citotóxica e genotóxica de extratos brutos provenientes do metabolismo secundários dos fungos endofíticos isolados de partes da planta da Eugenia jambolana, como caule (Ej- c), folhas (Ej-f), fruto verde (Ej-fv) e fruto maduro (Ej-fm) por meio de experimentos in vitro, utilizando células de hepatocarcinoma murino selvagem (Hepa-1c1c7). Para avaliar a citotoxicidade dos extratos brutos foi realizado o teste do MTT, podendo ser observados diferentes perfis citotóxicos de acordo com a parte da planta e o tempo de exposição de 24 e 48 horas. No tempo de exposição de 24 horas as amostras de Ej-fv(1) e Ej-fv(3) apresentaram CI50 de 65,57 μg/ml e 85,75 μg/ml, respectivamente. Já para amostra Ej-fm(1) houve CI50= 46,53 μg/ml . Nas análises que correspondem o tempo de exposição de 48 horas os extratos brutos do caule Ej-c ( Ej-c(3) e Ej-c(5)) apresentaram CI50 nas concentrações de 84,65 μg/ml e 95,35 μg/ml, respectivamente. O composto Ej-c(1) também foi observado uma menor citotoxicidade na concentração de 100,0 μg/ml. A atividade citotóxica também foi observada nas amostras da folha Ej-f (Ej-f(1), Ej-f(2), Ej-f(3)) atingindo o CI50 nas concentrações de 95,54 μg/ml, 90,8, μg/ml e 26,91 μg/ml, respectivamente.
