For large size- and chemical-mismatched isovalent semiconductor alloys, such as N and Bi substitution on As sites in GaAs, isovalent defect levels or defect bands are introduced. The evolution of the defect states as a function of the alloy concentration is usually described by the popular phenomenological band anticrossing (BAC) model. Using first-principles band-structure calculations we show that at the impurity limit the N-(Bi)-induced impurity level is above (below) the conduction- (valence-) band edge of GaAs. These trends reverse at high concentration, i.e., the conduction-band edge of GaAs1-xNx becomes an N-derived state and the valence-band edge of GaAs1-xBix becomes a Bi-derived state, as expected from their band characters. We show that this band crossing phenomenon cannot be described by the popular BAC model but can be naturally explained by a simple band broadening picture.

This chapter focuses on relationships between plastic deformation structures and mechanical properties in metals and alloys deforming by dislocation glide. We start by summarizing plastic deformation processes, then look at the fundamental mechanisms of plastic deformation and explore how deformation structures evolve. We then turn to experimental techniques for characterization which have allowed deformation microstructures to be quantified in terms of common structural parameters. The microstructural evolution has been described over many length scales and analyzed theoretically based on general principles. The deformation microstructures are related to work hardening stages. Finally we identify correlations between a wide range of microstructural features and mechanical properties, particularly flow stress, and use experimental observations to illustrate their inter-relationships.

It is known that the electrical resistance of annealed metals is usually smaller than that of metals in their cold worked state. The curve showing the relation between electrical resistance and annealing temperature reaches a minimum; continued annealing at higher temperature produces an increase in the electrical resistance. In the case of alloys it has been noted that a second decrease occurs at higher annealing temperature. The following work corroborates the observance of previous investigations. The electrical resistance of cold worked copper, gold, nickel, and iron decreased with annealing and then increased, the minimum being around 300° C. or 400° C. Monel metal showed a minimum resistance followed by an increase which in turn was followed by a second decrease.

Ordered intermetallic phases of Pt with several transition metals have been prepared and their electrocatalytic properties studied. In light of these tests it is proposed that these catalysts could be used as electrodes in fuel cells, as they combine an excellent capacity to adsorb organic fuels at the Pt sites with low susceptibility to being poisoned by intermediates and reaction products at the transition-metal sites. An experimental procedure used to obtain the four intermetallic phases Pt-M (M = Mn, Pb, Sb and Sn) is described. The phases thus produced were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with surface analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The data thus obtained support the conclusion that the method described here is highly effective for the preparation of Pt-M phases featuring a range of structural and electronic modifications that will allow a useful relation to be established between their physicochemical properties and predicted electrocatalytic activity. First-principles quantum-mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and deformed asymmetric models for Ba0.5Sr 0.5TiO3. Electronic properties are analyzed and the relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results on the photoluminescence behavior is discussed. The presence of localized electronic levels in the band gap, due to the symmetry break, would be responsible for the visible photoluminescence of the amorphous state at room temperature. Thin films were synthesized following a soft chemical processing. Their structure was confirmed by x-ray data and the corresponding photoluminescence properties measured.

Adsorption of CO has been investigated on the surfaces of polycrystalline transition metals as well as alloys by employing electron energy loss spectroscopy (eels) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (ups). CO adsorbs on polycrystalline transition metal surfaces with a multiplicity of sites, each being associated with a characteristic CO stretching frequency; the relative intensities vary with temperature as well as coverage. Whilst at low temperatures (80- 120 K), low coordination sites are stabilized, the higher coordination sites are stabilized at higher temperatures (270-300 K). Adsorption on surfaces of polycrystalline alloys gives characteristic stretching frequencies due to the constituent metal sites. Alloying, however, causes a shift in the stretching frequencies, indicating the effect of the band structure on the nature of adsorption. The up spectra provide confirmatory evidence for the existence of separate metal sites in the alloys as well as for the high-temperature and low-temperature phases of adsorbed CO.
