The enthalpy increments and the standard molar Gibbs energies of formation-of DyFeO3(s) and Dy3Fe5O12(s) have been measured using a Calvet micro-calorimeter and a solid oxide galvanic cell, respectively. A co-operative phase transition, related to anti-ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transformation, is apparent. from the heat capacity data for DyFeO3 at similar to 648 K. A similar type of phase transition has been observed for Dy3Fe5O12 at similar to 560 K which is related to ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic transformation. Enthalpy increment data for DyFeO3(s) and Dy3Fe5O12(s), except in the vicinity of the second-order transition, can be represented by the following polynomial expressions:{H(0)m(T) - H(0)m(298.15 K)) (Jmol(-1)) (+/-1.1%) = -52754 + 142.9 x (T (K)) + 2.48 x 10(-3) x (T (K))(2) + 2.951 x 10(6) x (T (K))(-1); (298.15 less than or equal to T (K) less than or equal to 1000) for DyFeO3(s), and {H(0)m(T) - H(0)m(298.15 K)} (Jmol(-1)) (+/-1.2%) = -191048 + 545.0 x (T - (K)) + 2.0 x 10(-5) x (T (K))(2) + 8.513 x 10(6) x (T (K))(-1); (208.15 less than or equal to T (K) less than or equal to 1000)for Dy3Fe5O12(s). The reversible emfs of the solid-state electrochemical cells: (-)Pt/{DyFeO3(s) + Dy2O3(s) + Fe(s)}/YDT/CSZ//{Fe(s) + Fe0.95O(s)}/Pt(+) and (-)Pt/{Fe(s) + Fe0.95O(s)}//CSZ//{DyFeO3(s) + Dy3Fe5O12(s) + Fe3O4(s)}/Pt(+), were measured in the temperature range from 1021 to 1250 K and 1035 to 1250 K, respectively. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of solid DyFeO3 and Dy3Fe5O12 calculated by the least squares regression analysis of the data obtained in the present study, and data for Fe0.95O and Dy2O3 from the literature, are given by Delta(f)G(0)m(DyFeO3,s)(kJmol(-1))(+/-3.2)= -1339.9 + 0.2473 x (T(K)); (1021 less than or equal to T (K) less than or equal to 1548)and D(f)G(0)m(Dy3Fe5O12,s) (kJmol(-1)) (+/-3.5) = -4850.4 + 0.9846 x (T (K)); (1035 less than or equal to T (K) less than or equal to 1250) The uncertainty estimates for Delta(f)G(0)m include the standard deviation in the emf and uncertainty in the data taken from the literature. Based on the thermodynamic information, oxygen potential diagram and chemical potential diagrams for the system Dy-Fe-O were developed at 1250 K. An optically transparent thin-layer electrochemical (OTTLE) cell with a locally extended optical path has been developed in order to perform vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy on chiral molecules prepared in specific oxidation states by means of electrochemical reduction or oxidation. The new design of the electrochemical cell successfully addresses the technical challenges involved in achieving sufficient infrared absorption. The VCD-OTTLE cell proves to be a valuable tool for the investigation of chiral redox-active molecules.

In this work we described for the first time the construction of a 25 μL electrochemical cell from low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) material and carbon screen-printed electrode applicable in portable devices. Firstly, a carbon screen-printed electrode was prepared and characterized by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy. Afterwards carbon polymeric film and metal pastes were dropped into the LTCC cell cavities in order to determine the device electrodes, and this arrangement was also electrochemically characterized. The great advantage of this promising device is the simple construction method and its widespread applicability in reusable portable devices. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The electrochemical generation of ozone by Ni/Sb-SnO2 anodes immersed in 0.5M H2SO4 was assessed in both flow and recycle systems using the same electrochemical cell. The anodes were found to exhibit current efficiencies of up to 50% for ozone generation under flow conditions at room temperature, with an optimum mole ratio in the precursor solutions of ca. 500:8:3 Sn:Sb:Ni and optimum cell voltage of 2.7V. A comparison of the data obtained under flow and recycle conditions suggests that the presence of ozone in the anolyte inhibits its formation. The minimum electrical energy cost achieved, of 18 kWh kg1 compares favorably with estimated costs for Cold Corona Discharge generally reported in the literature, especially when the very significant advantages of electrochemical ozone generation are taken into account.

he chemical potential of carbon in diamond, relative to its value in graphite, has been directly determined using a solid state electrochemical cell incorporating single crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cell can be represented as Pt, C(graphite) + CaC2 + CaF2double vertical barCaF2double vertical barCaF2 + CaC2 + C(diamond), Pt The reversible emf of this cell is directly related by the Nernst equation to the Gibbs free energy change for the conversion of diamond to graphite. The difference in the chemical potential of carbon in the two crystal structures varies linearly with temperature in the range 940 to 1260 K ?C(diamond) ? ?C(graphite) = 1100 + 4.64T (±50) J mol?1 On the average, the values given by the equation are 320 J mol?1 less positive than the currently accepted ones based on calorimetric studies. The difference is primarily in the enthalpy term.

Micrometre-scale polypyrrole (PPy) structures are synthesised for electrochemical supercapacitor applications by a facile electrochemical route. Globular polypyrrole microstructures of size < 5 μm are grown on stainless steel (SS-304) substrate by electro-polymerisation of pyrrole on oxygen microbubble templates electrochemically generated and stabilised in the presence of surfactant/supporting electrolyte/ dopant b-naphthalene sulfonic acid (b-NSA). Microstructures obtained with scan range of 0??1.6 V (against Ag/AgCl) are uniformly distributed over the surface with high coverage density of 5 x 105 to 8 x 10 cm-2. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the formed microstructures are of Β-NSA doped PPy. Scanning electron microscopy showed the uniform spread and good coverage of microstructures over the substrate. Supercapacitor properties of PPy films are investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge/discharge methods with 1.0 M KCl as electrolyte in a three-electrode electrochemical cell. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy proves the supercapacitance behaviour and explains the special inductive component of impedance observed in the high-frequency regime because of the globular structures of PPy deposited

Thermodynamic properties of Dysprosium rhodite (DyRhO3) are measured in the temperature range from 900 to 1,300 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of DyRhO3 with O-type perovskite structure from its components binary oxides, Dysprosia with C-rare earth structure and beta-Rh2O3 with orthorhombic structure, can be represented by the equation: Delta G(f(OX))(O) (+/- 182)/J mol(-1) = -52710+3.821(T/K). By using the thermodynamic data for DyRhO3 from experiment and auxiliary data for other phases from the literature, the phase relations in the system Dy-Rh-O are computed. Thermodynamic data for intermetallic phases in the binary system Dy-Rh, required for constructing the chemical potential diagrams, are evaluated using calorimetric data available in the literature for three intermetallics and Miedema's model, consistent with the phase diagram. The results are presented in the form of Gibbs triangle, oxygen potential-composition diagram, and three-dimensional chemical potential diagram at 1,273 K. Temperature-composition diagrams at constant oxygen partial pressures are also developed. The decomposition temperature of DyRhO3 is 1,732 (+/- 2.5) K in pure oxygen and 1,624 (+/- 2.5) K and in air at standard pressure.

This article describes the design of a new type of long-path-length thin-layer cell (LPTLC), which is constructed by inserting two Teflon cell bodies into a standard cuvette. This cuvette holder enables the LPTLC to combine with photometric instrumentation conveniently. Gold, platinum, glassy carbon, and other materials can be used for the working electrode. Since no soluble adhesive material is used, the cell can meet various needs (in situ conventional and derivative W-vis, in situ circular dichroism, etc.) in both aqueous and nonaqueous systems.

The possibility of determining the rate constant of a catalytic reaction using a parallel incident spectroelectrochemical cell was investigated in this work. Various spectroelectrochemical techniques were examined, including single-potential-step chronoabsorptometry, single-potential-step open-circuit relaxation chronoabsorptometry and double-potential-step chronoabsorptometry. The values determined for the kinetics of the ferrocyanide-ascorbic acid system are in agreement with the reported values. The parallel incident method is much more sensitive than the normal transmission method and can be applied to systems which have smaller molar absorptivities, larger rate constants or lower concentrations.

In developing a biosensor, the utmost important aspects that need to be emphasized are the specificity and selectivity of the transducer. These two vital prerequisites are of paramount in ensuring a robust and reliable biosensor. Improvements in electrochemical sensors can be achieved by using microelectrodes and to modify the electrode surface (using chemical or biological recognition layers to improve the sensitivity and selectivity). The fabrication and characterisations of silicon-based and glass-based gold microelectrode arrays with various geometries (band and disc) and dimension (ranging from 10 μm-100 nm) were reported. It was found that silicon-based transducers of 10 μm gold microelectrode array exhibited the most stable and reproducible electrochemical measurements hence this dimension was selected for further study. Chemical electrodeposition on both 10 μm microband and microdisc were found viable by electro-assisted self-assembled sol-gel silica film and nanoporous-gold electrodeposition respectively. The fabrication and characterisations of on-chip electrochemical cell was also reported with a fixed diameter/width dimension and interspacing variation. With this regard, the 10 μm microelectrode array with interspacing distance of 100 μm exhibited the best electrochemical response. Surface functionalisations on single chip of planar gold macroelectrodes were also studied for the immobilisation of histidine-tagged protein and antibody. Imaging techniques such as atomic force microscopy, fluorescent microscopy or scanning electron microscope were employed to complement the electrochemical characterisations. The long-chain thiol of self-assembled monolayer with NTA-metal ligand coordination was selected for the histidine-tagged protein while silanisation technique was selected for the antibody immobilisation. The final part of the thesis described the development of a T-2 labelless immunosensor using impedimetric approach. Good antibody calibration curve was obtained for both 10 μm microband and 10 μm microdisc array. For the establishment of the T-2/HT-2 toxin calibration curve, it was found that larger microdisc array dimension was required to produce better calibration curve. The calibration curves established in buffer solution show that the microelectrode arrays were sensitive and able to detect levels of T-2/HT-2 toxin as low as 25 ppb (25 μg kg-1) with a limit of quantitation of 4.89 ppb for a 10 μm microband array and 1.53 ppb for the 40 μm microdisc array.
