The work by Koglin et al. (Koglin, N., Kostopoulos, D., Reichmann, T., 2009. Geochemistry, petrogenesis and tectonic setting of the Samothraki mafic Suite, NE Greece: Trace-element, isotopic and zircon age constraints. Tectonophysics 473, 53-68. doi: 10.1016/j.tecto.2008.10.028), where the authors have proposed to nullify the scenario presented by Bonev and Stampfli (Bonev, N., Stampfli, G., 2008. Petrology, geochemistry and geodynamic implications of Jurassic island arc magmatism as revealed by mafic volcanic rocks in the Mesozoic low-grade sequence, eastern Rhodope, Bulgaria. Lithos 100, 210-233) is here Put under discussion. The arguments for this proposal are reviewed in the light of available stratigraphic and radiometric age constraints, geochemical signature and tectonics of highly relevant Jurassic ophiolitic suites occurring immediately north of the Samothraki mafic suite. Our conclusion is that the weak arguments and the lack of knowledge on the relevant constraints from the regional geologic information make inconsistent the Proposal and the model of these authors. DOI: The "Big Brother" in the dissemination of scientific documentation

Rapid growth in the availability and use of digital documents has prompted the development of instruments to handle them. A most important example of these instruments are digital identifiers, which provide a codification system that allows digital items, usually up to the level of a computer file, to be singled out and located. Digital identifiers make up standardized global systems applied to specific products or areas. They are part of the very many identifiers developed to handle large numbers of items and large amounts of information for transactional purposes, which often have a global span. Digital identifiers include the ubiquitous Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), a code that unequivocally identifies trade items all around the world. The GTIN can take on several configurations depending on its application. These include: EAN-13, EAN-8, EAN-14, and UCC-12. Influence on present-day coastal dynamics and evolution of a relict subaqueous delta lobe: Sol de Riu lobe, Ebro Delta. Continental Shelf Research, 74: 94-104. doi:10.1016/j.csr.2013.11.021

We used high-resolution swath-bathymetry data to characterise the morphology of the abandoned subaqueous Sol de Riu delta lobe in the Ebro Delta, Western Mediterranean Sea. This study aims to assess the influence of an abandoned delta lobe on present-day coastal dynamics in a micro-tidal environment. Detailed mapping of the relict Sol de Riu lobe also showed a set of bedforms interpreted as footprints of human activities: seasonal V-shaped depressions on the middle shoreface due to boat anchoring and old trawling marks between 16 and 18 m water depth. Estimations of the mobility of bottom sediment showed that the shallowest shoreface (i.e. less than 7 m depth) is the most dynamic part of the relict lobe, while the middle shoreface experienced significant morphological changes since the lobe was abandoned. The deepest shoreface (i.e. water depth in excess of 15 m), which corresponds to the front of the lobe, is defined by a very small potential for morphological change. Simulations showed that while the relict lobe does not significantly affect the typical short period waves (Tp ≈4 s) in the study area, it does interfere with the most energetic wave conditions (Tp ≥ 7 s) acting as a shoal leading to the concentration of wave energy along the shoreline northwest of the lobe. The consequence of such modification of the high-energy wave propagation pattern by the relict lobe is an alteration of the wave-induced littoral sediment dynamics with respect to a situation without the lobe.

Comment on: Fruit and seed biomineralization and its effect on preservation by E. Messager et al.; in: Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences (2010) 2:25–34. DOI 10.1007/s12520-010-0024-1

This article provides a brief critique of a recent article on biomineralisation and preservation. It gives a summary of the difference between biomineralisation and mineral replacement, and addresses problems with the interpretation of FT-IR data. The lack of contextual information for the samples studied is another problem which is highlighted.

O DOI-CODI carioca: memória e cotidiano no "Castelo do Terror"

O objetivo dessa dissertação é analisar a memória de seis ex-prisioneiros políticos do Destacamento de Operações de Informações-Centro de Operações de Defesa Interna do Rio de Janeiro (DOI-CODI/RJ), entrevistados recentemente, entre os anos de 2002 e 2004, sobre o cotidiano vivido nessa instituição em 1970. Naquele ano, dentro do Sistema de Segurança Interna (SISSEGIN), os DOI-CODI haviam sido criados e distribuídos por todas as Regiões Militares do país, tornando-se a principal instituição de repressão aos opositores políticos que optaram pela luta armada como forma de derrotar a ditadura militar brasileira. Assim, as narrativas desses seis ex-prisioneiros são, além de fontes essenciais, o principal objeto de estudo deste trabalho. Através delas, torna-se possível acessar aspectos cruciais para a caracterização do cotidiano vivido pelos presos em um desses órgãos, ― o DOI-CODI do Rio de Janeiro ―, uma vez que esse passado se liga ao presente por meio de suas memórias. Diante disso, a fim de melhor entender tais memórias, a formação e a atuação dos DOI-CODI também são aqui analisadas, colocando as narrativas dos ex-prisioneiros políticos entrevistados em diálogo com uma bibliografia especialmente selecionada, além de uma fonte a respeito do DOI feita por um de seus agentes quando este órgão ainda estava em atividade, em 1978. Para que a essas memórias seja aplicada uma crítica efetiva, necessária a todo trabalho histórico, o estudo se debruça ainda sobre as interferências que o presente exerce na construção que fazem com relação ao passado vivido no DOI-CODI/RJ, com o objetivo de esclarecer as bases sobre as quais são construídas cerca de trinta anos depois.
