This paper considers the design of reduced-order distributed functional observers for interconnected linear systems with the presence of time delays in the interconnections. Unlike observers which consider only the ideal non-delayed output information transfer, the proposed observer is capable of dealing with delayed output information from geographically separated subsystems. It is shown that by accepting measurement data from other subsystems, the conditions under which an observer exists can be made less conservative. Existence conditions, systematic and a straightforward procedure for the synthesis of the observers are given along with numerical examples illustrating the effectiveness and simplicity of the design algorithm.

This paper presents a load frequency control scheme using electric vehicles (EVs) to help thermal turbine units to provide the stability fluctuated by load demands. First, a general framework for deriving a state-space model for general power system topologies is given. Then, a detailed model of a four-area power system incorporating a smart and renewable discharged EVs system is presented. The areas within the system are interconnected via a combination of alternating current/high voltage direct current links and thyristor controlled phase shifters. Based on some recent development on functional observers, novel distributed functional observers are designed, one at each local area, to implement any given global state feedback controller. The designed observers are of reduced order and dynamically decoupled from others in contrast to conventional centralized observer (CO)-based controllers. The proposed scheme can cope better against accidental failures than those CO-based controllers. Extensive simulations and comparisons are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

This brief paper presents new conditions for the existence and design of reduced-order linear functional state observers for linear systems with unknown inputs. Systematic procedures for the synthesis of reduced-order functional observers are given. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the attractiveness and simplicity of the new design procedures.

In the existing literature, the existence conditions and design procedures for scalar functional observers are available for the cases where the observers’ order p is either p=1 or p=(v-1), where v is the observability index of the matrix pair (C,A). Therefore, if an observer with an order p=1 does not exist, the other available option is to use a higher order observer with p=(v-1). This paper shows that there exists another option that can be used to design scalar linear functional observers of the order lower than the well-known upper bound (v-1). The paper provides the existence conditions and a design procedure for scalar functional observers of order 0≤ p ≤2, and demonstrates the presented results with a numerical example.

This paper presents a new method of designing scalar functional observers of order less than the well-known upper bound (ν - 1). A condition for the existence of observers of order p where 1 ≤ p ≤ (ν - 1) is given. A simple and effective algorithm for solving the constrained generalized Sylvester equation is proposed. Several numerical examples are given to illustrate the attractiveness of the design algorithm.

The problem of observing a scalar functional or multi functionals (z(t)∈Rk , k>1) of the state vector has been the subject of numerous papers, and different algorithms have been proposed (see, [1]-[13] and references therein). There are also papers that deal with the order reduction of multi-dimensional functional observers [9,10,12,13]. For scalar functional observers, a well-known Luenberger’s classic result [1] provides an upper bound on the order with p=(v-1). It is interesting to note here that, except for a recent result of Darouach [12,13], little results have been reported on the order reduction for scalar functional observers.

This paper presents a methodological approach to design dynamic output feedback sliding-mode control for a class of uncertain dynamical systems. The control action consists of the equivalent control and robust control components. The design of the equivalent control and the sliding function are based on the pole-placement technique. Linear functional observers are developed to implement the sliding function and the equivalent control. Stability of the resulting system under the proposed control scheme is guaranteed. A numerical example is given to demonstrate its efficacy.

Darouach [1] recently derived necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and stability of functional observers with an order, p, equals to the dimension m of the vectors to be estimated. In general, these conditions are difficult to satisfy and when they are not, the only available option is to increase the order of the functional observers. This note presents new conditions for the existence of a general pth-order functional observer. Systematic procedures for the synthesis of reduced-order functional observers are given. A numerical example is given to illustrate the design procedures.

This paper presents the design of reduced-order linear functional observers for a class of linear time-delay systems of the neutral-type. The type of the observer proposed in this paper is without internal delay and its order is the same as the number of linear functions to be estimated. First, conditions for the existence of the reduced-order functional observers that are capable of asymptotically estimating any given function of the state vector are derived. Then, based on the newly derived existence conditions, a procedure is given for the determination of the observer parameters. The results derived in this paper include a range of linear systems and extend some existing results of linear functional observers to linear neutral delay systems. A numerical example is given to illustrate the design procedure.

The design of a minimum-order linear functional observer for linear time-invariant systems has been an open problem for over four decades. This technical note provides a solution to this problem. The technical note also introduces the concept of Functional Observability/Detectability and shows that the well-known concept of Observability/Detectability is a special case of Functional Observability/Detectability.

In control theory, a state observer is an auxiliary dynamical system that mirrors the behaviour of a physical system, and it is driven by input and output measurements of the physical system in order to provide an estimate of internal states of the physical system. The primary consideration in the design of an observer is that the estimate of the states should be close to the actual value of the system states. On the other hand, the functional observation problem centers on the construction of an auxiliary dynamical system, known as the functional observer or functional reconstructor, driven by the available system inputs and outputs in order to estimate a linear function or functions of the system states. Obviously, a functional observer is a general form of the state observer because when the linear functions are chosen as the individual states of the system then the problem of functional observation reduces to the problem of state observation.
