The SrWO4 (SWO) powders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method and annealed at different temperatures. The SWO structure was obtained by X-ray diffraction and the corresponding photoluminescence (PL) spectra was measured. The PL results reveal that the structural order-disorder degree in the SWO lattice influences in the PL emission intensity. Only the structurally order-disordered samples present broad and intense PL band in the visible range. To understand the origin of this phenomenon, we performed quantum-mechanical calculations with crystalline and order-disordered SWO periodic models. Their electronic structures were analyzed in terms of band structure. The appearance of localized levels in the band gap of the order-disordered structure was evidenced and is a favorable condition for the intense PL to occur.

The crystal structure of a hexamer duplex d(CACGTG)(2) has been determined and refined to an R-factor of 18.3% using X-ray data up to 1.2 angstrom resolution. The sequence crystallizes as a left-handed Z-form double helix with Watson-Crick base pairing. There is one hexamer duplex, a spermine molecule, 71 water molecules, and an unexpected diamine (Z-5, 1,3-propanediamine, C3H10N2)) in the asymmetric unit. This is the high-resolution non-disordered structure of a Z-DNA hexamer containing two AT base pairs in the interior of a duplex with no modifications such as bromination or methylation on cytosine bases. This structure does not possess multivalent cations such as cobalt hexaammine that are known to stabilize Z-DNA. The overall duplex structure and its crystal interactions are similar to those of the pure-spermine form of the d(CGCGCG)(2) structure. The spine of hydration in the minor groove is intact except in the vicinity of the T5A8 base pair. The binding of the Z-5 molecule in the minor grove of the d(CACGTG)(2) duplex appears to have a profound effect in conferring stability to a Z-DNA conformation via electrostatic complementarity and hydrogen bonding interactions. The successive base stacking geometry in d(CACGTG)(2) is similar to the corresponding steps in d(CG)(3). These results suggest that specific polyamines such as Z-5 could serve as powerful inducers of Z-type conformation in unmodified DNA sequences with AT base pairs. This structure provides a molecular basis for stabilizing AT base pairs incorporated into an alternating d(CG) sequence.

Sm-doped PbTiO3 powder was synthesized by the polymeric precursor method, and was heat treated at different temperatures. The x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and UV-visible were used as a probe for the structural order degree short-, intermediate-, and long-range orders. Sm-3+ ions were used as markers of these order-disorder transformations in the PbTiO3 system. From the Rietveld refinement of the Sm-doped PbTiO3 x-ray diffraction data, structural models were obtained and analyzed by periodic ab initio quantum mechanical calculations using the CRYSTAL 98 package within the framework of density functional theory at the B3LYP level. This program can yield important information regarding the structural and electronic properties of crystalline and disordered structures. The experimental and theoretical results indicate the presence of the localized states in the band gap, due to the symmetry break, which is responsible for visible photoluminescence at room temperature in the disordered structure. A polymeric precursor method was used to synthesis PbTiO3 amorphous thin film processed at low temperature. The luminescence spectra of PbTiO3 amorphous thin films at room temperature revealed an intense single-emission band in the visible region, the visible emission band was found to be dependent on the thermal treatment history, Photoluminescence properties Versus different annealing temperatures were investigated. The experimental results (XRD, AFM, FL) indicate that the nature of photoluminescence (PL) must be related to the disordered structure of PbTiO3 amorphous thin films, Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Disordered and crystalline Mn-doped BaTiO3 (BTO:Mn) powders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. After heat treatment, the nature of visible photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature in amorphous BTO:Mn was discussed, considering results of experimental and theoretical studies. X-ray diffraction (XRD), PL, and UV-vis were used to characterize this material. Rietveld refinement of the BTO:Mn from XRD data was used to built two models, which represent the crystalline BTO:Mn (BTO:Mn,) and disordered BTO:Mn (BTO:Mn-d) structures. Theses models were analyzed by the periodic ab initio quantum mechanical calculations using the CRYSTAL98 package within the framework of density functional theory at the B3LYP level. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that PL is related with the degree of disorder in the BTO:Mn powders and also suggests the presence of localized states in the disordered structure. Intense and broad photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature was observed on structurally disordered Ba[Zr0.25Ti0.75]O-3 (BZT) powders synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. BZT powders were annealed at 573 K for different times and at 973 K for 2 h in oxygen atmosphere. The single-phase cubic perovskite structure of the powder annealed at 973 K for 2 It was identified by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman techniques. PL emission increased with the increase of annealing time, which reached its maximum value in the powder annealed at 573 K for 192 h. First principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and disordered models. The theoretical calculations and experimental measurements of Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy indicate that the presence of intermediary energy levels in the band gap is favorable for the intense and broad PL emission at room temperature in disordered BZT powders. The PL behavior is probably due the existence of a charge gradient on the disordered structure, denoted by means of a charge transfer process from [TiO5]-[ZrO6] or [TiO6]-[ZrO5] clusters to [TiO6]-[ZrO6] clusters. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) has become a primary nanoparticle characterization technique with applications from materials characterization to biological and environmental detection. With the expansion in DLS use from homogeneous spheres to more complicated nanostructures, comes a decrease in accuracy. Much research has been performed to develop different diffusion models that account for the vastly different structures but little attention has been given to the effect on the light scattering properties in relation to DLS. In this work, small (core size < 5 nm) core-shell nanoparticles were used as a case study to measure the capping thickness of a layer of dodecanethiol (DDT) on Au and ZnO nanoparticles by DLS. We find that the DDT shell has very little effect on the scattering properties of the inorganic core and hence can be ignored to a first approximation. However, this results in conventional DLS analysis overestimating the hydrodynamic size in the volume and number weighted distributions. By introducing a simple correction formula that more accurately yields hydrodynamic size distributions a more precise determination of the molecular shell thickness is obtained. With this correction, the measured thickness of the DDT shell was found to be 7.3 ± 0.3 Å, much less than the extended chain length of 16 Å. This organic layer thickness suggests that on small nanoparticles, the DDT monolayer adopts a compact disordered structure rather than an open ordered structure on both ZnO and Au nanoparticle surfaces. These observations are in agreement with published molecular dynamics results.

Conventional catalyzed thermal CVD of carbon microcoils commonly suffers from poor control of the coil shape and morphology and rarely reaches the nanoscale size range. This article reports on an unconventional Ni-P alloy-catalyzed, high-throughput, highly reproducible CVD of ultra-long carbon coil-like micro- and nano-structures using acetylene precursor at relatively low process temperatures. Helical carbon microcoils with consistently uniform, circular cross-sections and a high degree of crystallinity have been synthesized at 750 °C. A further reduction of the temperature to 650 °C led to the growth of ultra-long (up to several mm) wave-like carbon nanofibers made of two nanowires with the diameters in the 100-200 nm range. The results of the XRD and Raman analysis reveal that the nanofibers feature only a slightly more disordered structure compared to the microcoils. Our results suggest that morphology and structure of the carbon coil-like micro- and nano-structures can be tailored by the appropriate alloying of the catalyst and the choice of the CVD process parameters.

The supramolecular self-assembly of brominated molecules was investigated and compared on Cu(110) and Cu(110)[BOND]O(2×1) surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum. By using scanning tunnelling microscopy, we show that brominated molecules form a disordered structure on Cu(110), whereas a well-ordered supramolecular network is observed on the Cu(110)[BOND]O(2×1) surface. The different adsorption behaviors of these two surfaces are described in terms of weakened molecule–substrate interactions on Cu(110)[BOND]O(2×1) as opposed to bare Cu(110). The effect of oxygen-passivation is to suppress debromination and it can be a convenient approach for investigating other self-assembly processes on copper-based substrates.

Crystalline morphologies of spin-coated poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) thin films under different conditions are investigated mainly with atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. When PLLA concentration in chloroform is varied from 0.01 to 1% gradually, disordered structure, rod-shape and larger spheres aggregates are observed in thin films subsequently. Under different annealing temperature, such as at 78, 102, 122 degrees C, respectively, we can find most rod-like crystalline aggregates. Interestingly, we observed that nucleation sites locate at the edge of the holes at the original crystalline stage. Then, these holes developed to form chrysanthemum-like and rods subsequently with annealing time meanwhile the size and the shape of crystalline aggregate are changed. In addition. effect of substrate and solvent on morphology is also discussed. On the other hand, the possible mechanism of crystalline morphology evolution is proposed.

The electrical, magnetic and transport properties of Zn doped polycrystalline samples of Sr2Fe1-xZnxMoO6 ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.15 and 0.25) with the double perovskite structure have been investigated. The subtle replacement of Fe3+ ions by Zn2+ ions facilitates the formation of a more ordered structure, while further substitution leads to disordered structure because of the presence of a striped phase. Analysis of the x-ray powder diffraction patterns based on Rietveld analysis indicates that the replacement of Fe3+ by Zn2+ ions favours the formation of Mo6+ ions. The spin-glass behaviour can be explained on the basis of the competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange and the ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction. The low-field magnetoresistance was moderately enhanced at x = 0.05, and its origin was found to be the competition between the decrease of the concentration of the itinerant electrons and the weaker antiferromagnetic superexchange in the antiphase boundaries. An almost linear negative magnetoresistance in moderate field has been observed for x = 0.25. A possible double-exchange mechanism is proposed for elucidating the observations; it also suggests a coexistence of (Fe3+, Mo5+) and (Zn2+, Mo6+) valence pairs.

Dodecatungsto-silicic H4SiW12O40 and -phosphoric acids H3PW12O40 were deposited on silica by a classical impregnation technique. The resulting materials were studied by in situ Raman and infrared spectroscopy, XPS and by solid-state H-1 MAS NMR as a function of their dehydroxylation temperature. The data show that in the case of H3PW12O40 three silanol groups are protonated while in the case of H4SiW12O40 at least one acidic proton remains. Upon heating this proton reacts leading to a disordered structure and a broadening of the W-O Raman bands.

In this thesis, we present the results of our investigations on the photoconducting and electrical switching properties of selected chalcogenide glass systems. We have used XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis for confinuing the amorphous nature of these materials and for confirming their constituents respectively.Photoconductivity is the enhancement in electrical conductivity of materials brought about by the motion of charge carriers excited by absorbed radiation. The phenomenon involves absorption, photogeneration, recombination and transport processes and it gives good insight into the density of states in the energy gap of solids due to the presence of impurities and lattice defects. Photoconductivity measurements lead to the determination of such important parameters as quantum efficiency, photosensiti\'ity, spectral sensitivity and carrier lifetime. Extensive research work on photoconducting properties of amorphous semiconductors has resulted in the development of a variety of very sensitive photodetectors. Photoconductors are finding newer and newer uses eyery day. CdS, CdSe. Sb2S3, Se, ZnO etc, are typical photoconducting materials which are used in devices like vidicons, light amplifiers, xerography equipment etc.Electrical switching is another interesting and important property possessed by several Te based chalcogenides. Switching is the rapid and reversible transition between a highly resistive OFF state, driven by an external electric field and characterized by a threshold voltage, and a low resistivity ON state, Switching can be either threshold type or memory type. The phenomenon of switching could find applications in areas like infonnation storage, electrical power control etc. Investigations on electrical switching in chalcogenide glasses help in understanding the mechanism of switching which is necessary to select and modify materials for specific switching applications.Analysis of XRD pattern gives no further infonuation about amorphous materials than revealing their disordered structure whereas x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,XPS) provides information about the different constituents present in the material. Also it gives binding energies (b.e.) of an element in different compounds and hence b.e. shift from the elemental form. Our investigations have been concentrated on the bulk glasses, Ge-In-Se, Ge-Bi-Se and As-Sb-Se for photoconductivity measurements and In-Te for electrical switching. The photoconducting properties of Ge-Sb-Se thin films prepared by sputtering technique have also been studied. The bulk glasses for the present investigations are prepared by the melt quenching technique and are annealed for half an hour at temperatures just below their respective glass transition temperatures. The dependence of photoconducting propenies on composition and temperature are investigated in each system. The electrical switching characteristics of In-Te system are also studied with different compositions and by varying the temperature.

We analysed Hordeum spontaneum accessions from 21 different locations to understand the genetic diversity of HsDhn3 alleles and effects of single base mutations on the intrinsically disordered structure of the resulting polypeptide (HsDHN3). HsDHN3 was found to be YSK2-type with a low-frequency 6-aa deletion in the beginning of Exon 1. There is relatively high diversity in the intron region of HsDhn3 compared to the two exon regions. We have found subtle differences in K segments led to changes in amino acids chemical properties. Predictions for protein interaction profiles suggest the presence of a protein-binding site in HsDHN3 that coincides with the K1 segment. Comparison of DHN3 to closely related cereals showed that all of them contain a nuclear localization signal sequence flanking to the K1 segment and a novel conserved region located between the S and K1 segments [E(D/T)DGMGGR]. We found that H. vulgare, H. spontaneum, and Triticum urartu DHN3s have a greater number of phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C than other cereal species, which may be related to stress adaptation. Our results show that the nature and extent of mutations in the conserved segments of K1 and K2 are likely to be key factors in protection of cells.
