This paper presents the results concerning the degradation of the pesticide carbaryl comparing two methods: electrochemical (EC) and photo-assisted electrochemical (PAEC). The experimental variables of applied current density, electrolyte flow-rate and initial carbaryl concentration were investigated. The results demonstrate that the electrochemical degradation of carbaryl was greatly enhanced when simultaneous UV light was applied. The greatest difference between the PAEC and EC method was apparent when lower current densities were applied. The extent of COD removal was much enhanced for the combined method, independent of the applied current density. It should be noted that the complete removal of carbaryl was achieved with out the need to add NaCl to the reaction mixture, avoiding the risk of chlorinated organic species formation. In this work we studied the electrochemical treatment of a tannery wastewater using dimensionally stable anodes (DSA (R)) containing tin, iridium, ruthenium, and titanium. The electrodes were prepared by thermal decomposition of the polymeric precursors. The electrolyses were performed under galvanostatic conditions, at room temperature. Effects of the oxide composition, current density, and effluent conductivity were investigated, and the current efficiency was calculated as a function of the time for the performed electrolyses. Results showed that all the studied electrodes led to a decrease in the content of both total phenolic compounds and total organic carbon (TOC), as well as lower absorbance in the UV-vis region. Toxicity tests using Daphnia similis demonstrated that the electrochemical treatment reduced the wastewater toxicity. The use of DSA (R) type electrodes in the electrochemical treatment of tannery wastewater proved to be useful since it can promote a decrease in total phenolic compounds, TOC, absorbance, and toxicity. This paper discusses different aspects related to the application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the study of heterogeneous electrochemical reactions occurring on Dimensionally Stable anodes (DSA®). The most relevant aspects of the semiconductor/electrolyte interface, the application of the EIS classical equivalent circuit approach and the ac porous model in DSA are presented. The paper shows that DSA type electrodes can be consistently investigated by using the ac porous model and an analysis is presented showing the advantage of applying this kind of approach to study heterogeneous reactions on DSA electrodes. Furthermore, some preliminary results on Ti/Ru0,3Ti(0,7-x)Sn x O2 based electrodes are presented to exemplify the use of the ac porous model analysis.

The present work deals with the design and construction of an equipment for muti-cell accelerated stability test measurements (AST) of dimensionally stable anodes (DSA). The equipment was built using only components that were available in the laboratory. Measurements of three electrochemical cells can be performed using the developed software. The acquisition time interval and the cut-off potencial can be set by the user. Experimental data for RuO2 electrodes obtained with the built equipment are in agreement with the literature.

This paper reports the electrochemical degradation of the azo dye Ponceau 2R under galvanostatic electrolysis in the 1 to 200 mA cm-2 range at room temperature using dimensionally-stable anodes of oxygen (DSA-O2), chlorine (DSA-Cl2) and a titanium electrode of platinum coated with platinum oxide (Ti/Pt). The methodology applied was efficient for removing the color of the Ponceau 2R and the highest percentage removal of total organic carbon was obtained at 200 mA cm-2. Despite not having been observed complete mineralization, approximately80% removal of aromatic rings was estimated, resulting in drastic reduction of toxicity of the sample.

Electrodes of RhxTi(1-x) O-y nominal composition were prepared by thermal decomposition of the chloride or nitrate precursor salts dissolved in strongly acidic medium and applied by brush to both sides of a Tidegrees support. A systematic study of the influence of calcination temperature and time as well as oxygen flux was conducted. The coatings were characterised by SEM, EDAX, XRD, open circuit potential measurements and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Visible-ultraviolet spectrophotometry was employed to identify the chemical form of the precursor in solution while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to assess the decomposition temperature ranges. Optimisation of the coating preparation parameters showed coatings obtained from [Rh(H2O)(6)](NO3)(3) precursor dissolved in HNO3 1:2 (v/v) and fired at 430 degreesC for 2 h in a 5 1 min (-1) oxygen stream-furnished stable electrodes having the highest electrochemically active surface area. This report shows an unexpected toxicity decrease during atrazine photoelectrodegradation in the presence of NaCl. Atrazine is a pesticide classified as endocrine disruptor occurring in industrial effluents and agricultural wastewaters. We therefore studied the effects of the degradation method, electrochemical and electrochemical photo-assisted, and of the supporting electrolyte, NaCl and Na2SO4, on the residual toxicity of treated atrazine solutions. We also studied the toxicity of treated atrazine solutions using Results show that at initial concentration of 20 mg L-1, atrazine was completely removed in up to 30 min using 10 mA cm(-2) electrolysis in NaCl medium, regardless of the electrochemical method used. The total organic carbon removal by the photo-assisted method was 82% with NaCl and 95% with Na2SO4. The solution toxicity increased during sole electrochemical treatment in NaCl, as expected. However, the toxicity unexpectedly decreased using the photo-assisted method. This finding is a major discovery because electrochemical treatment with NaCl usually leads to the formation of toxic chlorine-containing organic degradation by-products.

The industrial wastewater from resin production plants contains as major components phenol and formaldehyde, which are traditionally treated by biological methods. As a possible alternative method, electrochemical treatment was tested using solutions containing a mixture of phenol and formaldehyde simulating an industrial effluent. The anode used was a dimensionally stable anode (DSAA (R)) of nominal composition Ti/Ru0.3Ti0.7O2, and the solution composition during the degradation process was analyzed by liquid chromatography and the removal of total organic carbon. From cyclic voltammetry, it is observed that for formaldehyde, a small offset of the beginning of the oxygen evolution reaction occurs, but for phenol, the reaction is inhibited and the current density decreases. From the electrochemical degradations, it was determined that 40 mA cm(-2) is the most efficient current density and the comparison of different supporting electrolytes (Na2SO4, NaNO3, and NaCl) indicated a higher removal of total organic carbon in NaCl medium.

Surface oxygen groups play a key role on the performance of porous carbon electrodes for electrochemical capacitors in aqueous media. The electrooxidation method in NaCl electrolyte using a filter press cell and dimensionally stable anodes is proposed as a viable process for the generation of oxygen groups on porous carbon materials. The experimental set-up is so flexible that allows the easy modification of carbon materials with different configurations, i.e. cloths and granular, obtaining different degrees of oxidation for both conformations without the requirement of binders and conductivity promoters. After the electrooxidation method, the attained porosity is maintained between 90 and 75% of the initial values. The surface oxygen groups generated can increase the capacitance up to a 30% when compared to the pristine material. However, a severe oxidation is detrimental since it may decrease the conductivity and increase the resistance for ion mobility.

This paper has investigated the electrochemical oxidation of glyphosate herbicide (GH) on RuO(2) and IrO(2) dimensionally stable anode (DSA (R)) electrodes. Electrolysis was achieved under galvanostatic control as a function of pH, GH concentration, supporting electrolyte, and current density. The influence of the oxide composition on GH degradation seems to be significant in the absence of chloride; Ti/Ir(0.30)Sn(0.70)O(2) is the best electrode material to oxidize GH. GH oxidation is favored at low pH values. The use of chloride medium increases the oxidizing power and the influence of the oxide composition is meaningless. At 30 mA cm(-2) and 4 h of electrolysis, complete GH removal from the electrolyzed solution has been obtained. In chloride medium, application of 50 mA cm(-2) leads to virtually total mineralization ( release of phosphate ions = 91%) for all the evaluated oxide materials. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The electrochemical treatment of a synthetic tannery wastewater prepared with 30 compounds used in animal skin processing was studied. Electrolyses were performed in a one-compartment flow cell at a current density of 20 mA cm(-2), using a dimensionally stable anode (DSA (R)) of composition Ti/Ir(0.10)Sn(0.90)O(2) as the working electrode. Effects of chloride concentration and presence of sulfate were evaluated. Variation in the concentration of phenolic compounds as a function of electrolysis time revealed a first-order exponential decay; faster phenol removals were obtained with increasing chloride concentration in the wastewater. Lower phenol removals were obtained in the presence of sulfate. Higher chloride concentrations led to a faster decrease in total organic carbon (TOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and absorbance values at 228 nm. Faster wastewater color removal, higher current efficiency and lower energy consumption were also obtained. This electrochemical treatment was also able to reduce the wastewater toxicity for Daphnia similis. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electrochemical treatment of a synthetic tannery wastewater, prepared with several compounds used by finishing tanneries, was studied in chloride-free media. Boron-doped diamond (Si/BDD), antimony-doped tin dioxide (Ti/SnO(2)-Sb), and iridium-antimony-doped tin dioxide (Ti/SnO(2)-Sb-Ir)were evaluated as anode. The influence of pH and current density on the treatment was assessed by means of the parameters used to measure the level of organic contaminants in the wastewater; i.e., total phenols, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), and absorbance. Results showed that faster decrease in these parameters occurred when the Si/BDD anode was used. Good results were obtained with the Ti/SnO(2)-Sb anode, but its complete deactivation was reached after 4h of electrolysis at 25 mA cm(-2), indicating that the service life of this electrode is short. The Ti/SnO(2)-Sb-Ir anode is chemically and electrochemically more stable than the Ti/SnO(2)-Sb anode, but it is not suitable for the electrochemical treatment under the studied conditions. No significant changes were observed for electrolyses performed at different pH conditions with Si/BDD, and this electrode led to almost complete mineralization after 4 h of electrolysis at 100mAcm(-2). The increase in current density resulted in faster wastewater oxidation, with lower current efficiency and higher energy consumption. Si/BBD proved to be the best electrodic material for the direct electrooxidation of tannery wastewaters. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
