A new approach based on occupation measures is introduced for studying stochastic differential games. For two-person zero-sum games, the existence of values and optimal strategies for both players is established for various payoff criteria. ForN-person games, the existence of equilibria in Markov strategies is established for various cases.

The goal of this work was to examine the occurrence of brachyurans in soft bottom sublittoral habitats and their association with some environmental factors. The relative abundance of crabs in two depth strata (from 4.5 to 9 m and from 9 to 18 m) was quantified. Crabs were collected with an otter-trawl with 3.7 m of mouth opening and 12-mm mesh in the cod end. Monthly sampling, consisted of a single trawl in each stratum during a 1-yr period, were carried out. Fifteen brachyuran and six anomuran species were found, including Callinectes ornatus Ordway, 1863; Callinectes danae Smith, 1869; Hepatus pudibundus (Herbst, 1785); Libinia spinosa H. Milne-Edwards, 1834; Persephona punctata (Linnaeus, 1758), and P. mediterranea (Herbst, 1794), which were the most abundant and frequent in the area. The most abundant swimming crabs in both strata were C. ornatus and C, dan(re. Size differences in C. ornatus were observed between strata, suggesting a spatial separation of juveniles and adult crabs.

We examined the diets and habitat shift of juvenile red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) in the northeast Gulf of Mexico. Fish were collected from open sand-mud habitat (little to no relief), and artificial reef habitat (1-m3 concrete or PVC blocks), from June 1993 through December 1994. In 1994, fish settled over open habitat from June to September, as shown by trawl collections, then began shifting to reef habitat — a shift that was almost completed by December as observed by SCUBA visual surveys. Stomachs were examined from 1639 red snapper that ranged in size from 18.0 to 280.0 mm SL. Of these, 850 fish had empty stomachs, and 346 fish from open habitat and 443 fish from reef habitat contained prey. Prey were identified to the lowest possible taxon and quantified by volumetric measurement. Specific volume of particular prey taxa were calculated by dividing prey volume by individual fish weight. Red snapper shifted diets with increasing size. Small red snapper (<60 mm SL) fed mostly on chaetognaths, copepods, shrimp, and squid. Large red snapper (60–280 mm SL) shifted feeding to fish prey, greater amounts of squid and crabs, and continued feeding on shrimp. We compared red snapper diets for overlapping size classes (70–160 mm SL) of fish that were collected from both habitats (Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index and multidimensional scaling analysis). Red snapper diets separated by habitat type rather than fish size for the size ranges that overlapped habitats. These diet shifts were attributed to feeding more on reef prey than on open-water prey. Thus, the shift in habitat shown by juvenile red snapper was reflected in their diet and suggested differential habitat values based not just on predation refuge but food resources as well.

Ribosomal RNA genes of most insects are interrupted by R1/R2 retrotransposons. The occurrence of R2 retrotransposons in sciarid genomes was studied by PCR and Southern blot hybridization in three Rhynchosciara species and in Trichosia pubescens. Amplification products with the expected size for non-truncated R2 elements were only obtained in Rhynchosciara americana. The rDNA in this species is located in the proximal end of the X mitotic chromosome but in the salivary gland is associated with all four polytene chromosomes. Approximately 50% of the salivary gland rDNA of most R. americana larval groups analysed had an insertion in the R2 site, while no evidence for the presence of R1 elements was found. In-situ hybridization results showed that rDNA repeat units containing R2 take part in the structure of the extrachromosomal rDNA. Also, rDNA resistance to Bal 31 digestion could be interpreted as evidence for nonlinear rDNA as part of the rDNA in the salivary gland. Insertions in the rDNA of three other sciarid species were not detected by Southern blot and in-situ hybridization, suggesting that rDNA retrotransposons are significantly under-represented in their genomes in comparison with R. americana. R2 elements apparently restricted to R. americana correlate with an increased amount of repetitive DNA in its genome in contrast to other Rhynchosciara species. The results obtained in this work together with previous results suggest that evolutionary changes in the genus Rhynchosciara occurred by differential genomic occupation not only of satellite DNA but possibly also of rDNA retrotransposons.

We compared the relative contribution of blackwater inundation forest (igapo) and unflooded (terra firme) forest for regional bird species diversity in the lower Rio Negro region. For analyses of habitat preference we used mist-net samples and an unpublished bird species check-list. The igapo forest had lower bird species diversity than the terra firme forest. However, some 14% of the forest bird species in the region are restricted to igapo forest. Species composition was found to be distinct between the understories of the two forest types. Common forest bird guilds in the Neotropics such as ant-following birds avoid igapo forest. The differential habitat selection among birds in the inundated and unflooded forest is likely to result from vegetation structure and biological interactions such as aggressive behaviour. Since the inundated forest has a typical biota, conservation efforts needs to be directed to protect these habitats. Unfortunately, inundation forests are threatened by several human actions, especially dam construction. The extent of protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon is insufficient for the adequate protection of the inundated habitats, because it includes only 3% of the total area.

In the northwestern region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, the freshwater crab Dilocarcinus pagei Stimpson, 1861 is usually sold as bait for several fish species for sport fishing. Thus, knowledge of the reproductive biology of this species is essential to provide information for maintaining natural stocks and implementing future farming initiatives. The objective of this study was to investigate the population dynamics of the red freshwater crab D. pagei, focusing on reproductive and juvenile recruitment periods, sex ratio, and individual growth. Sampling was performed monthly from October 2005 to September 2007 in the Marimbondo-Fumas Hydroelectric Plant reservoir, Rio Grande, municipality of Icém in northwestern São Paulo state. The individuals were sexed, carapace widths were measured, and the gonads were examined macroscopically. In total, 1002 individuals were analyzed, consisting of 568 males and 434 females, of which 4 were ovigerous and 35 carried early juveniles in the incubatory chamber. The largest numbers of reproductive individuals of both sexes were recorded during the winter and spring months before spawning, which occurred in the spring. Intense juvenile recruitment and the highest rainfall levels were observed during the Southern Hemisphere summer. The results indicate that spawning can be considered seasonal, and the simultaneous emergence of juveniles with high rainfall levels is probably the result of the higher availability of food and potential sites for protection against predators. The skewed sex ratio (♂ 1:0.76 ♀) may be associated with growth rates, mortality, food restriction, behavioral differences, migration, and differential habitat use between the sexes. The similar maximum size (CW∞) and growth constant (k) for males (k = 1.78 y-1, CW = 61.43 mm) and females (k = 1.67 y-1, CW = 60.66 mm) may be associated with different energy investment strategies between the sexes. Uma das dez espécies de primatas presentes na Reserva Mamirauá (RDSM), Saimiri vanzolinii, possui alguns limites de sua distribuição ainda indefinidos. Considera-se sua área de distribuição como uma das menores dentre os primatas neotropicais, com cerca de 950 Km². Duas outras formas presentes do gênero Saimiri ainda não têm a sua taxonomia esclarecida. O objetivo principal deste estudo foi determinar características ecológicas e comportamentais que possam atuar como mecanismos de isolamento reprodutivo entre as formas de Saimiri na área da RDSM. Foram amostradas diversas áreas na RDSM, próximas às margens de rios e canais, coincidindo com as bordas da distribuição de S. vanzolinii. Ao longo do trajeto foram marcadas coordenadas geográficas no GPS. Em todos os pontos com presença de unidades sociais de Saimiri foram identificados a localidade, a forma de Saimiri, o número de indivíduos, hábitat, marca d’água e primatas associados. As vocalizações do tipo “cackle” foram gravadas oportunamente. Foram percorridos 218 Km, registrando-se 328 unidades sociais do gênero: 41% de Saimiri vanzolinii, 30% de Saimiri sp.1 e 29% de Saimiri sp.2. Um dos animais. Áreas de simpatria e sintopia também foram localizadas. Saimiri vanzolinii ocupa uma área com 106 Km² a menos do que o conhecido, abrangendo apenas 870 Km², o que confirma a menor área de distribuição de um primata neotropical. Dentre os resultados mais relevantes que podem determinar o isolamento reprodutivo entre as social, uso do estrato vertical e freqüências máximas da vocalização “cackle”. Saimiri tamanho médio de unidade social de Saimiri sp.2, na estação da seca, foi menor que para as outras formas. Quanto ao uso do estrato vertical, Saimiri vanzolinii ocupou níveis mais baixos, na estação da seca, do que Saimiri sp.1. Todas as formas ocuparam estratos mais baixos na estação da cheia. As freqüências máximas da vocalização “cackle” apresentaram diferenças entre as três formas, sendo Saimiri vanzolinii
