Iowa's first field application of synthetic engineering fabrics was on research project HR-158, "Prevention of Reflective Cracking in Asphalt Overlays". This research placed in September 1971 used three different engineering fabrics. A final report concluding generally favorable performance was distributed in May 1977. There have been a number of Iowa engineering fabric installations since that initial project.

Seasonal variations in ground temperature and moisture content influence the load carrying capacity of pavement subgrade layers. To improve pavement performance, pavement design guidelines require knowledge of environmental factors and subgrade stiffness relationships. As part of this study, in-ground instrumentation was installed in the pavement foundation layers of a newly constructed section along US Highway 20 near Fort Dodge, Iowa, to monitor the seasonal variations in temperature, frost depth, groundwater levels, and moisture regime. Dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), nuclear gauge, and Clegg hammer tests were performed at 64 test points in a 6-ft x 6-ft grid pattern to characterize the subgrade stiffness properties (i.e., resilient modulus) prior to paving. The purpose of this paper is to present the field instrumentation results and the observed changes in soil properties due to seasonal environmental effects.

Estacas apicais herbáceas de ramos plagiotrópicos do cacaueiro (clones CEPEC 42, TSH 516 e TSH 1188) foram tratadas com 0 e 6.000 mg.kg-1 do ácido indolbutírico (AIB) e estaqueadas em tubetes de 288 cm³ contendo como substrato uma mistura de Plantmax® e fibra de coco triturada (1:1), enriquecido com Osmocote® (19-06-20) e PG mix® (14-16-18). Os tubetes foram acondicionados em bandejas e estas foram mantidas em câmaras de nebulização. Na avaliação, realizada aos 78 dias após o estaqueamento, verificou-se que, independentemente da aplicação de AIB, as estacas dos clones avaliados apresentaram índices de enraizamento superiores a 87%, mas o tratamento das estacas com AIB aumentou os índices de sobrevivência e de estacas enraizadas de todos os clones, número de raízes (clones TSH 516 e TSH 1188), matéria seca de raízes (Clones CEPEC 42 e TSH 516) e matéria seca da parte aérea (Clones TSH 566 e TSH 1188).

The 70kDa ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) plays important roles in the regulation of protein synthesis, cell growth and metabolism. S6K1 is activated by the phosphorylation of multiple serine and threonine residues in response to stimulation by a variety of growth factors and cytokines. In addition to phosphorylation, we have recently shown that S6K1 is also targeted by lysine acetylation. Here, using tandem mass spectrometry we have mapped acetylation of S6K1 to lysine 516, a site close to the C-terminus of the kinase that is highly conserved amongst vertebrate S6K1 orthologues. Using acetyl-specific K516 antibodies, we show that acetylation of endogenous S6K1 at this site is potently induced upon growth factor stimulation. Although S6K1 acetylation and phosphorylation are both induced by growth factor stimulation, these events appear to be functionally independent. Indeed, experiments using inhibitors of S6K1 activation and exposure of cells to various stresses indicate that S6K1 acetylation can occur in the absence of phosphorylation and vice versa. We propose that K516 acetylation may serve to modulate important kinase-independent functions of S6K1 in response to growth factor signalling.

Pressure vessels are equipments that require a great care because of their high cost and human life risk in case of fail, and its fabrication methods are different for each manufacturer. Normally, pressure vessels and its parts are fabricated by welding, which may change local properties of metals. The head of a pressure vessel is a very important structural component and it is fabricated by welding and mechanical conformation. Because its excellent mechanical properties, de steel A-516 Grade 70 is often used in manufacturing of large pressure vessels that are subjected to high pressure and temperature, but was verified that its mechanical resistance is decreased when submitted to a tension relief heat treatment. By experience it was defined that before mechanical conformation of the head of a large pressure vessel, the steel should be submitted to a stress relief heat treatment in order to facilitate the mechanical conformation, but there is no quantitative analysis to prove this method and study its possible risks. In the present work the steel A-516 Grade 70 demonstrated a decrease of its mechanical resistance when submitted to a stress relief heat treatment, but keeping above the minimum limit defined in the literature. By other side its ductility was substantially increased, being possible to deduce that the stress relief heat treatment before mechanical conformation is a viable e recommended technique, but with reservations. With the data acquired during the fabrication e preparation of the specimen and the result of the tests, it was possible to elaborate a welding procedure that provides the same results obtained in this present work
