We study numerically the temperature dependencies of specific heat, susceptibility, penetration depth, and thermal conductivity of a coupled (d(x2-y2) + is)-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor in the presence of a weak s-wave component (1) on square lattice and (2) on a lattice with orthorhombic distortion. As the temperature is lowered past the critical temperature T-c, a less ordered superconducting phase is created in d(x2-y2) wave, which changes to a more ordered phase in (d(x2-y2) + is) wave at T-c1. This manifests in two second-order phase transitions. The two phase transitions are identified by two jumps in specific heat at T-c and T-c1. The temperature dependencies of the superconducting observables exhibit a change from power-law to exponential behavior as temperature is lowered below T-c1 and confirm the new phase transition. We study the order parameter for mixed-symmetry states involving a major d(x2-y2) state and various minor s-wave states (s, s(xy), and Sx2+y2) for different filling and temperature for mixing angles 0 and pi /2. We employ a two-dimensional tight-binding model incorporating second-neighbor hopping for tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice. There is mixing for the symmetric s state both on tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice. The s(xy) state mixes with the d(x2-y2) state only on orthorhombic lattice. The s(x2+y2) state never mixes with the d(x2-y2) state. The temperature dependence of the order parameters is also studied. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

High temperature superconductors were discovered in 1986, but despite considerable research efforts, both experimental and theoretical, these materials remain poorly understood. Because their electronic structure is both inhomogeneous and highly correlated, a full understanding will require knowledge of quasiparticle properties both in real space and momentum space. In this thesis, we will present a theoretical analysis of the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) data in BSCCO. We introduce the Bogoliubov-De Gennes Hamiltonian and solve it numerically on a two-dimensional 20 x 20 lattice under a magnetic field perpendicular to the surface. We consider a vortex at the center of our model. We introduce a Zn impurity in our lattice as a microscopic probe of the physical properties of BSCCO. By direct numerical diagonalization of the lattice BogoliubovDe Gennes Hamiltonian for different positions of the impurity, we can calculate the interaction between the vortex and the impurity in a d-wave superconductor.

The temperature dependencies of specific heat and spin susceptibility of a coupled dx2-y2 + idxy superconductor in the presence of a weak dxy component are investigated in the tight-binding model (1) on square lattice and (2) on a lattice with orthorhombic distortion. As the temperature is lowered past the critical temperature Tc, first a less ordered dx2-y2 superconductor is created, which changes to a more ordered dx2-y2 + idxy superconductor at Tcl(< Tc). This manifests in two second order phase transitions identified by two jumps in specific heat at Tc and Tc1. The temperature dependencies of the superconducting observables exhibit a change from power-law to exponential behavior as temperature is lowered below Tc1 and confirm the new phase transition. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. We investigate the solution of the gap equation for mixed order parameter symmetry states as a function of filling using a two-dimensional tight-binding model incorporating second-neighbor hopping for tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice, the principal (major) component of the order parameter is taken to be of the d(x2-y2) type, As suggested in several investigations the minor component of the order parameter is taken to be of the d(xy) type. Both the permissible mixing angles 0 and pi/2 between the two components are considered. As a function of filling pronounced maxima of d(x2-y2) order parameter is accompanied by minima of the d(xy) order parameter. At fixed filling. The temperature dependence of the two components of the order parameter is also studied in all cases. The variation of critical temperature T, with filling is also studied and T-c is found to increase with second-neighbor hopping. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Fermi patches in quasi-two dimensional charge density waves (CDW) have not described the connection to superconductivity (SC) according to theory adequately at this point in time. The connection between CDW and SC in the quasi-two dimensional material CuxTiSe2 is an interesting one which might reveal mechanisms in unconventional superconductors. A previous Brock graduate student grew crystals of CuxTiSe2. The precise doping of the samples was not known. In order to determine the doping parameter x in CuxTiSe2, a sensitive resistivity measurement system was necessary. A new resistivity measurement system was designed and implemented utilizing an Infrared Labs HDL-10 He3 cryostat. By comparing with data from the literature, doping of two samples was investigated using the new measurement system and a Quantum Design Magnetic Property Measurement System (MPMS). Methods for determining the doping revealed that the old resistivity system would not be able to determine the CDW transition temperature of highly doped samples or doping for elongated samples due to electronic noise. Doping in one sample was found to be between x=0.06 and x=0.065. Values of doping in the second sample had a discrepancy but could be explained by incorrect sample orientation.

A systematic diagrammatic expansion for Gutzwiller wavefunctions (DE-GWFs) proposed very recently is used for the description of the superconducting (SC) ground state in the two-dimensional square-lattice t-J model with the hopping electron amplitudes t (and t') between nearest (and next-nearest) neighbors. For the example of the SC state analysis we provide a detailed comparison of the method's results with those of other approaches. Namely, (i) the truncated DE-GWF method reproduces the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) results and (ii) in the lowest (zeroth) order of the expansion the method can reproduce the analytical results of the standard Gutzwiller approximation (GA), as well as of the recently proposed 'grand-canonical Gutzwiller approximation' (called either GCGA or SGA). We obtain important features of the SC state. First, the SC gap at the Fermi surface resembles a d(x2-y2) wave only for optimally and overdoped systems, being diminished in the antinodal regions for the underdoped case in a qualitative agreement with experiment. Corrections to the gap structure are shown to arise from the longer range of the real-space pairing. Second, the nodal Fermi velocity is almost constant as a function of doping and agrees semi-quantitatively with experimental results. Third, we compare the

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) resulting in accumulating neurological disability. The disorder is more prevalent at higher latitudes. To investigate VDR gene variation using three intragenic restriction fragment length polymorphisms (Apa I, Taq I and Fok I) in an Australian MS case-control population. One hundred and four Australian MS patients were studied with patients classified clinically as Relapsing Remitting MS (RR-MS), Secondary Progressive MS (SP-MS) or Primary Progressive MS (PP-MS). Also, 104 age-, sex-, and ethnicity-matched controls were investigated as a comparative group. Our results show a significant difference of genotype distribution frequency between the case and control groups for the functional exon 9 VDR marker Taq I (p(Gen) = 0.016) and interestingly, a stronger difference for the allelic frequency (p(All) = 0.0072). The Apa I alleles were also found to be associated with MS (p(All) = 0.04) but genotype frequencies were not significantly different from controls (p(Gen) = 0.1). The Taq and Apa variants are in very strong and significant linkage disequilibrium (D' = 0.96, P < 0.0001). The genotypic associations are strongest for the progressive forms of MS (SP-MS and PP-MS). Our results support a role for the VDR gene increasing the risk of developing multiple sclerosis, particularly the progressive clinical subtypes of MS.

Asymmetrically dibridged dicopper(II) complexes, [Cu-2(OH)(O2CC6H4-p-Me)(tmen)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (1) and [Cu-2(OH)(O2CC6H4-p-OMe)(tmen)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (2) (tmen = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine), were prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/a with a = 17.718(2), b = 9.869(1), c = 19.677(2) Angstrom, beta = 115.16(1)degrees, V = 3114.3(6) Angstrom(3) and Z = 4. The structure was refined to R(wR(2)) = 0.067(0.178). Complex 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/a with a = 17.695(3), b = 9.574(4), c = 20.104(2) Angstrom, beta = 114.18(1)degrees, V = 3107(1) Angstrom(3) and Z = 4. The final residuals are R(wR(2)) = 0.067(0.182). The complexes have a [Cu-2(mu-OH)(mu-OH)(mu-O2CAr)](2+) core with tmen Ligands occupying the terminal sites of the core. In addition, one copper is axially bound to a water molecule. The Cu ... Cu distances and the Cu-OH Cu angles in the core are 3.394(1) Angstrom, 124.4(2)degrees for 1 and 3.374(1) Angstrom, 123.3(3)degrees for 2. The complexes show axial X-band EPR spectral features in methanol glass at 77 K giving g(perpendicular to) = 2.02, g(parallel to) = 2.3 (A(parallel to) = 165 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) and a visible band near similar to 630 nm in methanol. The complexes are weakly antiferromagnetic. A theoretical fit of the magnetic susceptibility data in the temperature range 40-295 K gives -J = 10 cm(-1), g = 2.05 for 1 and -J = 10 cm(-1), g = 2.0 for 2. Plots of -2J versus the Cu-OH-Cu angle (phi) in this class of asymmetrically dibridged dicopper(II) complexes having d(x2-y2)-d(x2-y2) magnetic orbitals show a linear magneto-structural correlation: -2J(cm(-1)) = 11.48 phi(deg) - 1373.

Six ternary copper(II) complexes of general formulation [CuLB] (1-6), where L is dianionic ONS-donor thiosemicarbazones derived from the condensation of salicylaldehyde with thiosemicarbazides and B is NN-donor heterocyclic bases like 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, are prepared from a reaction of copper(II) acetate hydrate with the heterocyclic base (B) and the thiosemicarbazone (H2L) in MeOH, and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction technique. Crystal structures of the complexes display a distorted square-pyramidal (4 + 1) coordination geometry having the ONS-donor thiosemicarbazone bonded at the basal plane. The chelating heterocyclic bases exhibit axial-equatorial mode of bonding. The complexes are one-electron paramagnetic and they show axial X-band EPR spectra in DMF-toluene glass at 77 K giving g(parallel to)(A(parallel to)) and g(perpendicular to) values of similar to2.2 (175 x 10(-4) cm(-1)) and similar to2.0 indicating a {d(x2-y2)}(1) ground state. The complexes show a d-d band near 570 nm and a charge transfer band near 400 nm in DMF. The complexes are redox active and exhibit a quasireversible Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple in DMF-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate near 0.1 V vs. SCE. They are catalytically active in the oxidation of ascorbic acid in presence of dioxygen. Copper dodecanoate films prepared by emulsion method exhibit superhydrophobic property with water contact angle of 155 degrees and sliding angle of <2 degrees. The films have been characterised by using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Surface microstructure of copper dodecanoate consists of numerous microscale papillas of about 6-12 mu m in length with a diameter in the range of 360-700 nm. The superhydrophobicity of the films is due to their dual micronano surface morphology. The wetting behaviour of the film surface was studied by a simple water immersion test. The results show that copper dodecanoate film retained superhydrophobic property even after immersing in water for about 140 h. The optical absorption spectrum exhibits two broadbands centred at 388 and 630 nm that have been assigned to B-2(1g) -> E-2(g) and B-2(1g) -> B-2(2g) transitions of Cu2+ ions, respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum exhibits two resonance signals with effective g values at g(parallel to)approximate to 2.308 and g(perpendicular to) approximate to 2.071, which suggests that the unpaired electron occupies d(x2-y2) orbital in the ground state. Analysing the coordination state of copper ions in cuprate superconductors, it is found that the larger the energy splitting between d(x2-y2) and d(z2) orbitals of Cu or the higher the energy of the d(x2-y2) orbital, the higher the Tc. Thus, appropriate coordination structures and strong-field ligands must be chosen for expanding the energy splitting and increasing the energy of the d(x2-y2) orbital when searching for new high-Tc superconductors. Summarizing the experimental results of ESR and XPS, it is considered that the [Cu2+ - O open-square-box 2- - Cu3+] resonance exists in cuprate superconductors and the electron field breathing mode is present. Analysing the mechanism and the relationship between the coordination state of Cu and Tc, we consider that the two dimensional Cu-O planes are responsible for the superconductivity of YBa2Cu3O7-y.

Background. Vitamin D and its analogues are reported to have renoprotective effects in chronic kidney disease including diabetic nephropathy (DN). Vitamin D3 is converted to 1,25(OH) D3 by CYP2R1 and CYP27B1. The biological action of 1,25(OH) D3 is mediated via its receptor. VDR, CYP27B1 or CYP2R1 gene variants could modify the biological activity of vitamin D3. We have conducted the first case- control association study to determine the relationship between polymorphisms in VDR, CYP27B1 and CYP2R1 genes, and the risk of DN in individuals with type 1 diabetes.
