The efficiency of a Laue lens for X and Gamma ray focusing in the energy range 60 ÷ 600 keV is closely linked to the diffraction efficiency of the single crystals composing the lens. A powerful focusing system is crucial for applications like medical imaging and X ray astronomy where wide beams must be focused. Mosaic crystals with a high density, such as Cu or Au, and bent crystals with curved diffracting planes (CDP) are considered for the realization of a focusing system for X rays, owing to their high diffraction efficiency. In this work, a comparison of the efficiency of CDP crystals and mosaic crystals was performed on the basis of the theory of X-ray diffraction. Si, GaAs and Ge CDP crystals with optimized thicknesses and moderate radii of curvature of several tens of metres demonstrate comparable or superior performance with respect to the higher atomic number mosaic crystals generally used. A simplified approach for calculating the integrated reflectivity of the crystals is applied. A bending technique used during this work to realize CDP crystals consists in a controlled surface damaging induced by a mechanical lapping process. A compressive strained layer of few micrometres in thickness is generated and causes the convex curvature of the damaged side of the crystal. Another new bending technique is developed and the main results are shown. The process consists on a film deposition of a selected bi-component epoxy resin on one side of crystal, made uniform in thickness by mean of a spin-coater. Choosing the speed of spin-coating, so changing the thickness of the film, a control of radius of curvature can be obtained. Moreover the possibility to combine the two bending technique to obtain CDP crystal with a stronger curvature in rather thick crystals was demonstrated. Detailed characterization of Si, and GaAs CDP crystals at low and high x-ray energies are performed on flat and bent crystals obtained with the damaging and the resin deposition technique. As expected an increase of diffraction efficiency in asymmetrical diffraction geometry in CDP crystals with respect to the flat ones is observed. On the other hand an unexpected increase of the integrated intensity in symmetrical geometry, not predicted by the theory, is observed in all the measurements performed with different set up. The experimental trend of the integrated reflectivity as a function of the radius of curvature is in a good agreement with that predicted by the theory of bent perfect crystals, so it is possible to conclude that the surface damage has a limited effect on the crystal reflectivity. A study of the integrated reflectivity in the energy range of interest (100÷350 keV) in CDP crystals realized with damaging and resin deposition technique at symmetrical and asymmetrical geometries was performed at ILL Institute. Also at these energies the diffraction efficiency of bent crystals was much larger (a 12 time increase is observed for bent crystals in asymmetrical 111 geometry) than that measured in flat crystals. The diffraction efficiency of CDP crystals realized with both techniques tends to coincide with that of flat crystals at very high energies (> 200 keV). This suggesting that also real flat perfect crystals can be considered as strongly bent or mosaic crystals at very high X ray energies.

A discrete slip model which characterizes the inhomogeneity of material properties in ductile single crystals is proposed in this paper. Based on this model rate-dependent finite element investigations are carried out which consider the finite deformation, finite rotation, latent hardening effect and elastic anisotropy. The calculation clearly exhibits the process from microscopic inhomogeneous and localized deformation to necking and the formation of LSBS and reveals several important features of shear localization. For example, the inhomogeneous deformation is influenced by the imperfections and initial non-uniformities of material properties. The inhomogeneous deformation may either induce necking which results in the lattice rotation and leads to geometrical softening, which in turn promotes the formation of CSBS, or induces heavily localized deformation. The microscopic localized deformation eventually develops into the LSBS and results in a failure. These results are in close agreement with experiment. Our calculations also find that the slip lines on the specimen's surface at necking become curved and also find that if the necking occurs before the formation of LSBS, this band must be misoriented from the operative slip systems. In this case, the formation of LSBS must involve non-crystallographic effects. These can also be indirectly confirmed by experiment. All these suggest that our present discrete slip model offers a correct description of the inhomogeneous deformation characterization in ductile crystals.

The full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of an x-ray rocking curve (XRC) has been used as a parameter to determine the tilt and twist angles of GaN layers. Nevertheless, when the thickness of GaN epilayer reaches several microns, the peak broadening due to curvature becomes non-negligible. In this paper, using the (0 0 l), l = 2, 4, 6, XRC to minimize the effects of wafer curvature was studied systematically. Also the method to determine the tilt angle of a curved GaN layer was proposed while the Williamson-Hall plot was unsuitable. It was found that the (0 0 6) XRC-FWHM had a significant advantage for high-quality GaN layers with the radius curvature of r less than 3.5 m. Furthermore, an extrapolating method of gaining a reliable tilt angle has also been proposed, with which the calculated error can be improved by 10% for r < 2 m crystals compared with the (0 0 6) XRC-FWHM. In skew geometry, we have demonstrated that the twist angles deriving from the (2 0 4) XRC-FWHM are in accord with those from the grazing incidence in-plane diffraction (IP-GID) method for significantly curved samples.

The novel phase field model with the "polymer characteristic" was established based on a nonconserved spatiotemporal Ginzburg-Landau equation (TDGL model A). Especially, we relate the diffusion equation with the crystal growth faces of polymer single crystals. Namely, the diffusion equations are discretized according to the diffusion coefficient of every lattice site in various crystal growth faces and the shape of lattice is selected based on the real proportion of the unit cell dimensions.

The crystallization detail of polyethylene (PE) has been scarcely studied via in-situ approach since it is an extremely fast process. In this work, optical microscopy is used to investigate crystallization details and characteristics of windmill-like polyethylene crystals. It has been shown that the straight edges of the petals appear firstly and grow in pairs from their central junctions, which subsequently induce the surrounding domains in between each pairs of petals to nucleate and crystallize into twisted lamellar overgrowths. The remaining terrace-stacked lamellae which form curved edges of the petals start to develop only after the straight edges of the petals together with the twisted lamellar overgrowths have completed their growth. It is confirmed that the preferential growth direction of these petals are along crystallographic [113] axis, which has an angle of 65, with the typical direction along b-axis adopted also by the twisted lamellar overgrowths.

Metallocene-catalyzed short chain branched polyethylene single crystals, formed from the melt at a higher crystallization temperature of 114 degreesC, were obtained. Highly elongated lamellae were formed, which are different from truncated lozenge or lenticular shaped single crystals formed at a lower crystallization temperature. It was found that there existed a definite line in the lamellae along the longitudinal growth direction and two regions were separated by the definite line. The lateral habits of both the regions were asymmetrical about the b-axis due to the chain tilting, which was the same as that at a lower crystallization temperature. Generally, the highly elongated lamellae were not straight, but curved towards the opposite direction with chain tilting direction due to a series of edge dislocation within a lamella. The inner side of a lamella was serrated and the outer side was smooth due to the lamellar curvature. The thickness of both regions of a lamella was different, the broader region was thicker than the narrower region, which was different from the uniform thickness of the lamellae formed at a lower crystallization temperature. The different thicknesses within a lamella were considered as the result of the initial thickness difference and the impact of isothermal thickening. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Sandwich shells have recently emerged as aesthetically pleasing, efficient and economical structural systems, with a number of applications. They combine the advantages of sandwich layer technology together with those of shell action. With different materials and thicknesses used in the sandwich layers, their performance characteristics largely remain un-quantified and there are no guidelines at present for their design. This research paper provides verification, through finite element modeling and testing, for the application of this technology to dome styled dwellings with research currently being conducted into the further application to roofing and floor structures.
