Two distinct ferromagnetic phases of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 having monoclinic structure with distinct physical properties have been studied. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature T-c is found to be different for both the phases. The origin of such contrasting characteristics is assigned to the changes in the distance(s) and angle(s) between Mn-O-Co resulting from distortions observed from neutron diffraction studies. Investigations on the temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy provide evidence for such structural characteristics, which affects the exchange interaction. The difference in B-site ordering which is evident from the neutron diffraction is also responsible for the difference in T-c. Raman scattering suggests the presence of spin-phonon coupling for both the phases around the T-c. Electrical transport properties of both the phases have been investigated based on the lattice distortion.

Several pseudo-binary RxR2-x'Fe-17 alloys (with R = Y, Ce, Pr, Gd and Dy) were synthesized with rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type crystal structure determined from x-ray and neutron powder diffraction. The choice of compositions was done with the aim of tuning the Curie temperature (T-C) in the 270 +/- 20 K temperature range, in order to obtain the maximum magneto-caloric effect around room temperature. The investigated compounds exhibit broad isothermal magnetic entropy changes, Delta S-M(T), with moderate values of the refrigerant capacity, even though the values of Delta S-M(Peak) are relatively low compared with those of the R2Fe17 compounds with R = Pr or Nd. The reduction on the Delta S-M(Peak) is explained in terms of the diminution in the saturation magnetization value. Furthermore, the Delta S-M(T) curves exhibit a similar caret-like behavior, suggesting that the magneto-caloric effect is mainly governed by the Fe-sublattice. A single master curve for Delta S-M/Delta S-M(Peak)(T) under different values of the magnetic field change are obtained for each compound by rescaling of the temperature axis.

A thermally actuated flux pump is an efficient method to magnetize the high-temperature superconductor (HTS) bulk without applying a strong magnetic field. A thermal material is employed as a magnetic switch, which decides the efficiency of the system. To measure the Curie temperatures of those samples without destroying them, the nondestructive Curie temperature (NDT) measurement was developed. The Curie temperature of gadolinium (Gd) was measured by the NDT method and compared to the results from superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Because the SQUID tests require the sample to be cut into small piece, a constant shape of the testing sample could not be guaranteed. The demagnetizing effect was considered to remove the shape effect. The intrinsic permeability was modified from the apparent susceptibility by considering demagnetization. A thermal material with low Curie temperature, Mg 0.15Cu0.15Zn0.7Ti0.04Fe 1.96O4, was synthesized and its performance was tested and compared with previous thermal materials. Comparisons of three thermal materials, including the Curie temperature and the permeability, will be detailed in the paper. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

The hole-mediated Curie temperature in Mn-doped wurtzite ZnO nanowires is investigated using the k center dot p method and mean field model. The Curie temperature T-C as a function of the hole density has many peaks for small Mn concentration (x(eff)) due to the density of states of one-dimensional quantum wires. The peaks of T-C are merged by the carriers' thermal distribution when x(eff) is large. High Curie temperature T-C > 400 K is found in (Zn,Mn)O nanowires. A transverse electric field changes the Curie temperature a lot. (Zn,Mn)O nanowires can be tuned from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic by a transverse electric field at room temperature. The Curie temperature of diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) nanowires and nanoslabs is investigated using the mean-field model. The Curie temperature in DMS nanowires can be much larger than that in corresponding bulk material due to the density of states of one-dimensional quantum wires, and when only one conduction subband is filled, the Curie temperature is inversely proportional to the carrier density. The T-C in DMS nanoslabs is dependent on the carrier density through the number of the occupied subbands. A transverse electric field can change the DMS nanowires from the paramagnet to ferromagnet, or vice versae. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Polycrystalline Sr2FeMoO6 compounds with most vacancies at normal Fe sites were fabricated through Mo hole doping; its effect is similar to Fe3+ by our estimation. Sharp increase of magnetoconductance at low field was evidence of spin-polarized tunneling between the grains. The room temperature low-field magnetoresistivity at optimal doping x=0.03 is 8.5% in 3000 Oe and increases to 11.4% in 1 T associated with soft magnetic behaviors; furthermore it exhibits a ferromagnetic Curie temperature of 450 K, connected with hole doping effect. The improved magnetoresistivity behavior was related to Curie temperature.

Electron microprobe and thermomagnetic analyses of selected basalt samples from Hole 597C were performed. The main purpose of this work was to investigate and estimate the degree of oxidation of the samples using the ratios of Fe to Ti and the Curie temperatures obtained from thermomagnetic curves. The results show that the magnetic properties of samples from Hole 597C change at a sub-bottom depth of 100 m, and that low-temperature and high-temperature oxidation processes prevailed above and below 100 m, respectively.

Donor-doped n-(Ba,Pb)TiO3 polycrystalline ceramics exhibit distinctly two-step positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) characteristics when formulated with suitable combinations of B2O3 and Al2O3 as grain boundary modifiers by heterogeneous addition. B2O3 or Al2O3 when added singularly resulted in either steep or broad PTCR jumps respectively across the phase transition. The two-step PTCR is attributed to the activation of the acceptor states, created through B2O3 and Al2O3, for various temperature regimes above the Curie point (T-c). The changing pattern of trap states is evident from the presence of Ti4+-O--Al3+ type hole centres in the grain boundary layer regions, identified in the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra. That charge redistribution occurs among the inter-band gap defect states on crossing the Curie temperature is substantiated by the temperature coefficient in the EPR results. Capacitance-voltage results clearly show that there is an increase in the density of trap states with the addition of B2O3 and Al2O3. The spread in energy values of these trap states is evident from the large change in barrier height (phi similar or equal to 0.25-0.6 eV) between 500 and 650 K.

Mechanical spectroscopy measurement is performed to study the internal friction of nanocrystalline ( NC) nickel with an average grain size of 23 nm from room temperature to 610 K. An internal friction peak is observed at about 550 K, which corresponds to the Curie transition process of the NC nickel according to the result of magnetization test. Moreover, the fact that the Curie temperature of NC nickel is lower than that of coarse-grained nickel is explained by an analytical model based on the weakening of cohesive energy.

Superconductors are known for the ability to trap magnetic field. A thermally actuated magnetization (TAM) flux pump is a system that utilizes the thermal material to generate multiple small magnetic pulses resulting in a high magnetization accumulated in the superconductor. Ferrites are a good thermal material candidate for the future TAM flux pumps because the relative permeability of ferrite changes significantly with temperature, particularly around the Curie temperature. Several soft ferrites have been specially synthesized to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of the TAM flux pump. Various ferrite compositions have been tested under a temperature variation ranging from 77K to 300K. The experimental results of the synthesized soft ferrites-Cu 0.3 Zn 0.7Ti 0.04Fe 1.96O 4, including the Curie temperature, magnetic relative permeability and the volume magnetization (emu/cm3), are presented in this paper. The results are compared with original thermal material, gadolinium, used in the TAM flux pump system.-Cu 0.3 Zn 0.7Ti 0.04 Fe 1.96O 4 holds superior characteristics and is believed to be a suitable material for next generation TAM flux pump. © 2011 IEEE.

Time resolved magneto-optic Kerr rotation measurements of optically induced spin quantum beats are performed on heavily doped bulk (Ga,Mn)As diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). An effective g-factor of about 0.2-0.3 over a wide range of temperature for both as-grown and annealed (Ga,Mn)As samples is obtained. A larger effective g-factor at lower temperature and an increase of the spin relaxation with increasing in-plane magnetic field are observed and attributed to the stronger p-d exchange interaction between holes and the localized magnetic ion spins, leading to a larger Zeeman splitting and heavy-hole-light-hole mixing. An abnormal dip structure of the g-factor in the vicinity of the Curie temperature suggests that the mean-field model is insufficient to describe the interactions and dynamics of spins in DMS because it neglects the short-range spin correlation effect.
