Non-resonant multiphoton ionization combined with quadrupole and time-of-flight analysis has been used to study sputtering by both atomic and molecular ion beams. The mass spectra and energy distributions of both sputtered atoms and secondary ions produced by 3.6 keV Ar+, N+, N-2(+), CF2+ and CF3+ ion bombardment at 45 degrees to a polycrystalline copper target have been measured. The energy distributions of the copper ions and atoms are found to be different and quite complex. The ion distributions can generally be described by a linear collision cascade model, with possible evidence for a knock-on contribution. The sputtered atom distributions are partially described by a combination of linear collision cascade and dense cascade (thermal spike) models. This is interpreted as support for a time-evolving sputtering mechanism.

The effects of 200 mM copper ions on the synthesis of membrane and periplasmic proteins were investigated in iron-grown cells of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (At. ferrooxidans). Total membrane protein profiles of cells grown in the absence of copper ions (unadapted cells) and in the presence of copper ions (copper-adapted cells) were compared by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE). Crude preparations of outer membrane and periplasmic proteins were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. The synthesis of proteins was diminished or increased in the presence of copper ions. Low molecular weight proteins (< 14 kDa) were significantly repressed by copper. These proteins are probably acidic proteins located in the outer membrane. An over-expression of a periplasmic protein of about 17 kDa was detected in the copper-adapted cells and was assumed to be rusticyanin, a 16.5-kDa periplasmic copper protein present in At. ferrooxidans cells and involved in the electron-transport chain of the iron oxidation pathway. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a possible involvement of the rusticyanin and outer membrane proteins in the mechanism of copper resistance in At. ferrooxidans. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Alginate polysaccharide forms viscous aqueous dispersions and has the ability to form gels in the presence of divalent cations such as calcium and copper. In this work, we have studied cooper ions binding during Cu‐alginate gelation, obtaining quantitative information about the amount and kinetics of cation binding. Our results indicate that copper binding during gelation occurs until a Langmuir‐type equilibrium is reached between bound and free ions in the gel‐contacting solution. The kinetics of metal ions binding can be modeled using Ritchie equation–derived models, allowing the prediction of ionic binding and gel formation temporal evolution. The ratio between cationic and polysaccharide quantities in the gelation system determines the kinetics of gelation and the characteristics of the gel formed. The experimental results and models applied in the work give more insights on alginate gelation and contribute to a reliable design and control of production methods for alginate gel structures.

Oxidised low density lipoprotein (LDL) may be involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We have therefore investigated the mechanisms underlying the antioxidant/pro-oxidant behavior of dehydroascorbate, the oxidation product of ascorbic acid, toward LDL incubated With Cu2+ ions. By monitoring lipid peroxidation through the formation of conjugated dienes and lipid hydroperoxides, we show that the pro-oxidant activity of dehydroascorbate is critically dependent on the presence of lipid hydroperoxides, which accumulate during the early stages of oxidation. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we show that dehydroascorbate amplifies the generation of alkoxyl radicals during the interaction of copper ions with the model alkyl hydroperoxide, tert-butylhydroperoxide. Under continuous-flow conditions, a prominent doublet signal was detected, which we attribute to both the erythroascorbate and ascorbate free radicals. On this basis, we propose that the pro-oxidant activity of dehydroascorbate toward LDL is due to its known spontaneous interconversion to erythroascorbate and ascorbate, which reduce Cu2+ to Cu+ and thereby promote the decomposition of lipid hydroperoxides. Various mechanisms, including copper chelation and Cu+ oxidation, are suggested to underlie the antioxidant behavior of dehydroascorbate in LDL that is essentially free of lipid hydroperoxides. The application of mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) loaded with drugs/growth factors to induce osteogenic differentiation of stem cells has been trialed by a number of researchers recently. However, limitations such as high cost, complex fabrication and unintended side effects from supraphysiological concentrations of the drugs/growth factors represent major obstacles to any potential clinical application in the near term. In this study we reported an in situ one-pot synthesis strategy of MSNs doped with hypoxia-inducing copper ions and systematically evaluated the nanospheres by in vitro biological assessments. The Cu-containing mesoporous silica nanospheres (Cu-MSNs) had uniform spherical morphology (∼100 nm), ordered mesoporous channels (∼2 nm) and homogeneous Cu distribution. Cu-MSNs demonstrated sustained release of both silicon (Si) and Cu ions and controlled degradability. The Cu-MSNs were phagocytized by immune cells and appeared to modulate a favorable immune environment by initiating proper pro-inflammatory cytokines, inducing osteogenic/angiogenic factors and suppressing osteoclastogenic factors by the immune cells. The immune microenvironment induced by the Cu-MSNs led to robust osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) via the activation of Oncostation M (OSM) pathway. These results suggest that the novel Cu-MSNs could be used as an immunomodulatory agent with osteostimulatory capacity for bone regeneration/therapy application. Statement of significance In order to stimulate both osteogenesis and angiogenesis of stem cells for further bone regeneration, a new kind of hypoxia-inducing copper doped mesoporous silica nanospheres (Cu-MSNs) were prepared via one-pot synthesis. Biological assessments under immune environment which better reflect the in vivo response revealed that the nanospheres possessed osteostimulatory capacity and had potential as immunomodulatory agent for bone regeneration/therapy application. The strategy of introducing controllable amount of therapeutic ions instead of loading expensive drugs/growth factors in mesoporous silica nanosphere provides new options for bioactive nanomaterial functionalization.

The crystal structure of copper ammonium oxalate dihydrate (space group P1̃) has been derived from a refinement of the two-dimensional (hk0) and (0kl) x-ray data using the atomic coordinateis of the isomorphous salt CuK 2(C2O4)2.2H2O as the starting point of the analysis. In contrast to the chromium complexes of oxalic acid the C-C bonds in both the two nonequivalent oxalate ions in the unit cell are single bonds (1.58 and 1.61 Å) consistent with the conclusion of Jeffrey and Parry that the carboxyl groups of the oxalate ion are separated by a pure a bond with little or no π conjugation across the molecule. Both the oxalate ions are slightly nonplanar. The copper ions occupy the special positions (0, 0, 0) and 0, 1/2, 0) and their coordination is of the distorted octahedral type with four nearest oxygen neighbors ( ≃ 2 Å) at the corners of a square and two more distant atoms along the octahedral bond direction. The environment of the NH4+ ions consists of eight nearest oxygen atoms at a mean distance of 3 Å.

The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of ternary oxides of Cu(II) has been studied between 4.2 and 300 K. The systems include those with 180 degrees Cu-O-Cu interactions (such as Ln2CuO4, Sr2CuO2Cl2, Sr2CuO3 and Ca2CuO3) or 90 degrees Cu-O-Cu interactions (such as Y2Cu2O5 or BaCuO2) as well as those in which the Cu2+ ions are isolated (such as Y2BaCuO5, La1.8Ba1.2Cu0.9O4.8 and Bi2CuO4). The change in the EPR susceptibility as a function of temperature is compared with that of the DC magnetic susceptibility. Compounds with extended 180 degrees Cu-O-Cu interactions which have a low susceptibility also do not give EPR signals below room temperature. For compounds such as Ca2CuO3 with one-dimensional 180 degrees Cu-O-Cu interactions a weak EPR signal is found the temperature dependence of which is very different from that of the DC susceptibility. For Y2BaCuO5 as well as for La1.8Ba1.2Cu0.9O4.8 the EPR susceptibility as well as its temperature variation are comparable with those of the static susceptibility near room temperature but very different at low temperatures. Bi2CuO4 also shows a similar behaviour. In contrast, for Y2Cu2O5, in which the copper ions have a very distorted nonsquare-planar configuration, the EPR and the static susceptibility show very similar temperature dependences. In general, compounds in which the copper ions have a square-planar geometry give no EPR signal in the ground state (0 K) while those with a distortion from square-planar geometry do give a signal. The results are analysed in the light of recent MS Xalpha calculations on CuO46- square-planar clusters with various Cu-O distances as well as distortions. It is suggested that in square-planar geometry the ground state has an unpaired electron in anionic orbitals which is EPR inactive. Competing interactions from other cations, an increase in Cu-O distance or distortions from square-planar geometry stabilise another state which has considerably more Cu 3d character. These states are EPR active. Both these states, however, are magnetic. For isolated CuO46- clusters the magnetic interactions seem to involve only the states which have mainly anionic character.

The infra-red spectra of a large number of ternary Cu(II) oxides with at least a quasi square-planar coordination of oxygen around the copper ions have been studied. The frequency of the bands with the highest frequency,v max, is found to correlate extremely well with the shortest Cu–O distance.v max increases at an impressive rate of sim20 cm–1 per 0.01 Å when the Cu–O distance becomes less than 1.97 Å, which is the Cu2+–O2– distance in square-planar CuO4 complexes as obtained from empirical ionic radii considerations. The marked sensitivity may be used as a ldquotitrationrdquo procedure not only to assign bands but also to obtain diagnostic information about local coordination in compounds derived, for example, from the YBa2Cu3O7–d structure such as LaCaBaCu3O7–d . The only example where this correlation fails is in the two-layer non-superconducting oxides derived from La2(Ca, Sr)Cu2O6. The significance of this result is discussed. The marked dependence of frequency on the bond-distance is qualitatively examined in terms of an increased electron-phonon coupling to account for the observed tendency of the superconducting transition temperature to go through a maximum as the average basal plane Cu–O distance is decreased.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans MAL4-1, an isolate from Malanjkhand copper mines, India, was adapted to grow in the presence of high concentration (30 gL(-1)) of Cu2+, resulting in a 15-fold increase in its tolerance to Cu2+. While wild-type T. ferrooxidans MAL4-1 contained multiple plasmids, cultures adapted to Cu2+ concentrations of 20 gL(-1) or more showed a drastic reduction in the copy number of the plasmids. The reduction for three of the plasmids was estimated to be over 50-fold. Examination of the plasmid profiles of the strains adapted to high concentration of SO42- anion (as Na2SO4 or ZnSO4) indicated that the reduction in plasmid copy number is not owing to SO42- anion, but is specific for Cu2+. The effect of mercury on the plasmids was similar to that of copper. Deadaptation of the Cu2+- Or Hg2+-adapted T. ferrooxidans resulted in restoration of the plasmids to the original level within the first passage. The fact that the plasmid copy number, in general, is drastically reduced in Cu2+-adapted T. ferrooxidans suggests that resistance to copper is chromosome mediated. This is the first report of a selective negative influence of copper ions on the copy number of plasmids in T. ferrooxidans.

The polynuclear copper(II) complex [{Cu2L(O2CC5H4N)}. C2H5OH](x) (1), where H3L is a 1∶2 Schiff base derived from 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol and salicylaldehyde, has been prepared and structurally characterized. The structure consists of a one-dimensional zigzag chain in which the binuclear [Cu2L](+) units are covalently linked by isonicotinate ligands to give a syndiotactic arrangement of the copper ions protruding outside the chain. In the basic unit, the copper(II) centres are bridged by an alkoxo and a carboxylato ligand, giving a Cu ... Cu distance of 3.492(3) Angstrom and a Cu-O-Cu angle of 130.9(2)degrees. While one copper centre has a square-planar geometry, the other copper is square-pyramidal with the pyridine nitrogen being the axial ligand. The visible electronic spectrum of 1 shows a broad d-d band at 615 nm. The complex shows a rhombic X-band EPR spectral pattern in the polycrystalline phase at 77 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 22 to 295 K demonstrate the antiferromagnetic behaviour of 1. A theoretical fit to the magnetic data is based on a model assuming 1 as an equimolar mixture of copper atoms belonging to an antiferromagnetically coupled one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with the other copper atoms outside the chain behaving like paramagnetic centres.

In this paper we report about the electrical properties of La 0.7Ca0.3MnO3 compounds substituted by copper on the manganese site and/or deliberately contaminated by SiO2 in the reactant mixture. Several phenomena have been observed and discussed. SiO2 addition leads to the formation of an apatite-like secondary phase that affects the electrical conduction through the percolation of the charge carriers. On the other hand, depending on the relative amounts of copper and silicon, the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity can be noticeably modified: our results enable us to compare the effects of crystallographic vacancies on the A and B sites of the perovskite with the influence of the copper ions substituted on the manganese site. The most original result occurs for the compounds with a small ratio Si/Cu, which display double-peaked resistivity vs. temperature curves. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
