Purpose - This paper aims to demonstrate the need for an improved understanding of the opportunities offered by privacy online. This is contextualized in the case of supermarket purchases of food in particular, often described as an intimate and personal choice. In the case of grocery shopping, the "intimacy" may be at the household level between members or/and between e-grocers' food offerings, and their other "non-food" related services Design/methodology/approach - This paper draws upon social practice theory research, retailing and consumer behaviour in order to develop a conceptual framework for understanding the value of positive privacy. The research uses 39 in-depth interviews of e-grocery shoppers in the area of Portsmouth (UK). Findings - This paper suggests a framework for embedded elements of positive privacy into retailing strategy as a driver for growth in the e-grocery sector. Three meta-themes requiring different approaches to privacy are uncovered. Positive privacy is dynamic and contextual at the consumer/household levels as well as for product/e-grocery brands. Research limitations/implications - This paper advocates the building of long-term sustainable relationship through sharing, offering, and exchange of information rather than pure technological chasing of data. Originality/value - A consumer centred bottom-up approach is employed demonstrating the value of two-way dialogues with consumers on sensitive issues. E-grocery is used as an illustration that involves regular re-purchase of a basket of staple goods over a long period of time where privacy becomes a latent long-term concern. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

We live in times when the search for a citizenship education that can transcend national, ethnical and cultural borders is an important part of educational policy. In times of increased pressure by the European Union on its nation states to provide for nation-transcending democracy, this question becomes crucial for national policymaking in Europe. In this text, Swedish education policy will be taken as a case in point in order to shed light on how this question is being handled in this particular national policy setting. It is argued that the policy’s citizen fostering agenda tends to be counterproductive in the sense that it is still situated in national notions of the relationship between democracy and education, which tend to exclude certain individuals and groups of people on an age-related and (ethno) cultural basis. It is further argued that these excluding features can be related to educational ideas about socialisation. The aim of this text is underlined by suggesting a different way of framing democracy and democratic citizenship education: to increase the potential of education as regards the renewal of democracy and democratic citizenship.

La Tesi presenta un metodo per valutare il livello di reversibilità e circolarità dei componenti edili. Il concetto cardine dello studio è il Design for Disassembly (DfD), definibile come un approccio alla progettazione di organismi edilizi secondo criteri costruttivi volti a facilitare successivi cambiamenti e smantellamenti (completi o parziali), consentendo il riutilizzo dei componenti, al fine di ridurre l’impatto ambientale degli interventi. Attualmente, diverse ricerche in ambito scientifico si dedicano all’approfondimento di questa tematica, correlandola ad altri concetti come la metodologia del Building Information Modeling (BIM), che consente di digitalizzare il processo progettuale, la sua realizzazione e la sua gestione attraverso modelli. Dopo l’analisi dello stato dell’arte, il lavoro è giunto alla definizione di un insieme di parametri idonei per essere introdotti in un modello informativo, in grado di rappresentare la circolarità del componente in termini di DfD. Per ogni elemento del componente analizzato viene assegnato un valore numerico (variabile da 0,1 a 1) a ogni parametro. Tramite l’utilizzo di una formula elaborata nell’ambito di precedenti ricerche svolte dal Dipartimento di Architettura dell'Università di Bologna, opportunamente modificata, si ottiene un indice sintetico finale denominato “Express Building Circularity Indicators” (EBCI). Il metodo di analisi proposto come strumento a supporto del processo progettuale è stato validato tramite l’applicazione a diverse soluzioni di facciata per l’efficientamento energetico di un fabbricato selezionato come caso di studio italiano dal progetto Europeo Horizon 2020 "DRIVE 0 – Driving decarbonization of the EU building stock by enhancing a consumer centred and locally based circular renovation process". I risultati ottenuti hanno consentito di verificare la replicabilità del processo digitalizzato a diverse soluzioni costruttive e l’affidabilità del metodo di valutazione del grado di circolarità.

Ce mémoire explore des façons de conceptualiser la responsabilité dans des cas où des individus contribuent de façon peu significative à des torts collectifs éloignés. Pour contextualiser la discussion, la relation entre des actes de consommation et la perpétuation des « sweatshops » dans l’industrie des textiles et des chaussures est utilisée. Une approche basée sur les droits humains est déployée pour définir le tort qui est présent dans les usines de textiles et une conceptualisation de la connection est proposée selon la notion de la structure sociale. Guidé par la notion de « unstructured collective harms » proposée par Christopher Kutz, et en comparaison avec des notions de responsabilité qui mettent la responsabilité nationale en premier plan, les conclusions qui sont offertes ici sont centrées sur l’importance de la confrontation du consommateur pour remédier aux effets du problème d’action collective qui est au coeur de la création des torts collectifs lointains. Finalement, l’importance du cosmopolitanisme comme une façon de stabiliser des théories de responsabilité à travers les frontières est mis en évidence.

This project explored how consumers in emerging economies evaluate brand extension by using China as a case. Two separate but related studies were conducted, and university students were used as respondents in both the studies. Study one or replication study tested Aaker and Keller's brand extension model in China. Assuming similar methods to Aaker and Keller's, six well-recognised brands were chosen as parent brand and each was extended to three product categories. Totally, 469 respondents completed the survey questionnaire. As each was to evaluate six extensions, this made the cases 2814. The data was analysed using Optimal Least Square regression approach and "residual centred" approach respectively. The result confirmed most of the findings observed in developed countries. Specifically, consumer's attitude towards the extension is primarily driven by the brand affect, the fit between the two product categories, the difficulty of making the extension and moderated via the interactions between the brand affect and the fit variables. Study two refined and extended Aaker and Keller's model by adding new variables and making methodological adjustments. The same stimuli and data analysis techniques as those in the replication were employed. 252 respondents participated in the survey and each evaluated six extensions, making cases 1512. In addition to re-verifying the findings of the replication and providing cross validation to these findings, the extended study found that the image consistency between the parent brand and the extension, the competition intensity of the extension product market were important in determining the success of the extension. Further, consumer differed in evaluating durable extensions and non-durable extensions. The thesis detailed the two studies above, and discussed the findings and their implications by relating to branding literature, to the general situation of the emerging economies as well as the reality of China. It also presented the limitations of the research and the future research directions.

Chicken Run, an experimental project still in development, sees designers and scientists working together to explore ideas to improve poultry welfare in commercial facilities, applying user-centred design to all key stakeholders: farmer, consumer and chicken. Exploring various aspects of the chicken’s journey from egg to plate, the process has allowed researchers to better understand their needs and to maximise joined-up positive impact. The paper describes the ongoing process where Initial proposals including perches, bales and an app to enable consumers to make the right chicken purchase choices have been developed and tested. Co-authored by leaders of the design and scientific communities involved in the project, the paper describes the issues, design methods used, as well as some of the learning from the cross-disciplinary process. It also provides an update on progress of selected design ideas that are currently being developed with a commercial poultry farm, drawing out the challenges and successes encountered.

A simple and low cost method to determine volatile contaminants in post-consumer recycled PET flakes was developed and validated by Headspace Dynamic Concentration and Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detection (HDC-GC-FID). The analytical parameters evaluated by using surrogates include: correlation coefficient, detection limit, quantification limit, accuracy, intra-assay precision, and inter-assay precision. In order to compare the efficiency of the proposed method to recognized automated techniques, post-consumer PET packaging samples collected in Brazil were used. GC-MS was used to confirm the identity of the substances identified in the PET packaging. Some of the identified contaminants were estimated in the post-consumer material at concentrations higher than 220 ng.g-1. The findings in this work corroborate data available in the scientific literature pointing out the suitability of the proposed analytical method.

This study aimed to evaluate the attitudes towards food safety among consumers in the city of So Paulo, the major consumer market in Brazil. Focus group sessions were conducted with 30 adults responsible for food choices and purchases. Results indicated a preference for supermarkets over street markets, for the variety of foods, convenience and confidence in the safety assurance. On the other hand, the ""naturalness"" of the products in the street markets was the main reason for purchases in those places. Participants showed concerns with respect to food additives, hormones and pesticides - technological rather than ""natural"" hazards. Minimally processed and ready-to-eat foods were considered convenient products meeting the need for time/labor-savings in the kitchen, although suspicion about wholesomeness and safety came up among consumers. Lack of awareness regarding potentially risky behaviors was observed, including handling and storage of foods in the domestic environment. In conclusion, this study suggests that Brazilian regulators should create more effective risk communication combining technical information with actual consumer perceptions of food risks. This study investigated the consumer attitude to food irradiation in Sao Paulo, Brazil, through a qualitative research perspective. Three focus groups were conducted with 30 consumers, responsible for food choices and purchases. Both irradiated and nonirradiated food samples were served in the sessions to motivate the discussion and elicit the participants knowledge, opinions, feelings and concerns towards the irradiation process. Reactions were similar among the groups and differences between the irradiated and the nonirradiated samples were hardly perceived. When provided with positive information about irradiation and its benefits to foods and human health, many people still remained suspicious about the safety of the technology. Risk perception seemed to be related to unease and lack of knowledge about nuclear power and its non-defense use. Participants claimed for more transparency in communication about risks and benefits of irradiated foods to the human health, especially with respect to the continued consumption. Industrial relevance: Irradiation is an emerging food processing technology, which has been gaining interest by food technologists, producers and manufacturers all over the world in the last decades. Irradiation is suitable for disinfestation, microorganism load reduction or sterilization, assuring the safety, as well as having benefits in the shelf-life of foodstuffs. Food irradiation is approved in many countries and its use in food processing is endorsed by several reputed authorities, such as FAD and USDA. Despite the approval and recommendation, this technology still remains underutilized not only in Brazil, but also in other countries. The main reason appears to be the consumer concerns and doubts about the use of radiations in food processing. To develop communication strategies in promotion of irradiated foods it is necessary to investigate consumer attitudes, knowledge. opinions, as well as fears, with respect to the use of radiation in food processing. It is well-known that consumer views on technology may vary from a culture to another. So, findings from consumer research in a country may certainly not reflect the consumer views in other countries. In this sense, Brazilian studies focused on consumer views on food irradiation are necessary to gain understanding on how the local market accepts the technology. Brazil is one of the most important food producers in the world and an emerging consumer market with a population of about 184 million people. Food irradiation is regulated in Brazil since 1973, but to date only a few food ingredients are subjected to irradiation. The wide use of irradiation in food processing would favor Brazilian producers in the quality and safety assurance of food products, both for the local market and for exports. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of addition of rosemary and oregano extracts on the sensory quality of irradiated beef burger was investigated. Batches of beef burgers were prepared with 400 ppm of rosemary or oregano extract and a group prepared with 200 ppm of synthetic butyl-hydroxytoluene (BHT)/butyl-hydroxy-anisol (BHA) was used as a control. Half of each formulation was irradiated at the maximum dose allowed for frozen meat (7 kGy). Samples were kept under frozen conditions (-20 degrees C) during the whole storage period, including during irradiation. Two analyses were performed after 20 and 90 days to verify the influence of the addition of the different types of antioxidants and the effect of irradiation and storage time on the acceptance of the product. Thirty-three and thirty-four untrained panelists were invited to participate in the first and second test, respectively. A structured hedonic scale ranging from 1 to 9 points was used in both analyses. BHT/BHA formulation obtained the highest score (6.73) and regarding the natural antioxidants, oregano received better acceptance (6.36). Irradiated samples formulated with oregano received a lower score, 6.03 in the first test and 5.06 in the second one, compared to the non-irradiated sample (6.36 and 5.79). In the second test (90 days), the sample formulated with BHT/BHA and which was irradiated received a higher score (6.59) when compared to the non-irradiated one (5.85). In both tests, the irradiated samples formulated with rosemary extract obtained a better score compared to the non-irradiated one, the scores being 5.00-3.82 and 5.00-3.76 in the first and second test, respectively. Our results allowed us to conclude that the natural antioxidants, rosemary and oregano extracts, present a good alternative for replacing synthetic additives in food industries, and that the irradiation process, in some cases, may help to enhance the sensory quality of food. The new macrocyclic ligand trans-6-(9-anthracenylmethylamino)-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-13-amine has been synthesized and characterised as its copper(II) complex and the crystal structure of this complex has been determined. Fluorescence of the anthracenyl group of the macrocycle is quenched in its free base form and when complexed with Cu-II. Fluorescence returns when Lewis acids such as H+ and Zn-II are added to solutions of the ligand, indicating that photoinduced electron transfer from the amine lone pairs is responsible for fluorescence quenching in the free base form. By contrast, fluorescence of the complex is quenched by intramolecular electronic energy transfer.

This paper is part of a large study to assess the adequacy of the use of multivariate statistical techniques in theses and dissertations of some higher education institutions in the area of marketing with theme of consumer behavior from 1997 to 2006. The regression and conjoint analysis are focused on in this paper, two techniques with great potential of use in marketing studies. The objective of this study was to analyze whether the employement of these techniques suits the needs of the research problem presented in as well as to evaluate the level of success in meeting their premisses. Overall, the results suggest the need for more involvement of researchers in the verification of all the theoretical precepts of application of the techniques classified in the category of investigation of dependence among variables.

This study is part of a larger project on the measurement of effective health consumers in the context of musculoskeletal illness. This complex issue involves the progressive nature of the disease, invisibility of the illness and attendant impairments, complexity of decision-making and negotiation, and urgent need to translate emergent evidence about treatment and management to patients and health professionals. We conducted indepth interviews with patients, family members, general practitioners, specialist clinicians, and health consumer advocates (N = 84) about effective consumers in this context, using a process of convergent interviewing, with convergence conducted within and across groups and countries. The initial set of themes included information seeking and adaptation, decision-making, roles of patients, GPs, and specialists and communication between them, importance of pain and impact of depression, impact of the social environment (including the invisibility of the disease and the need for a normal life), and coping strategies.
