Head dipping (HD) is a behavioral pattern considered to have a risk assessment or an exploratory role and is used as a complementary parameter to evaluate anxiety in experimental animals. Since rats with electrolytic lesion in the area of the median raphe nucleus displayed high frequencies of HD in a previous study, the present investigation was undertaken to confirm this observation and to determine its anxiety-related origin. HD episodes were counted in adult male Wistar rats (270-350 g) with electrolytic lesion (N = 11) and sham-lesioned controls (N = 12). When HD was measured for 60 min on an elevated open platform, lesioned rats emitted 13 times more HD than controls (264.7 ± 93.3 vs 20.3 ± 7.6 episodes), with the difference being statistically significant (P < 0.05). HD counts during 10-min sessions held 7, 14, 21, 27, and 63 days after lesion showed significantly higher means (range: 28.14 ± 5.38 to 62.85 ± 9.48) compared to sham-lesioned controls (range: 7.37 ± 1.13 to 8.5 ± 1.45). Normal rats stepped down into their home cages when the vertical distance between them and the cage was short (16 cm), and the step-down latencies increased with increasing depths (36.7 ± 7.92 to 185.87 ± 35.44 s). Lesioned rats showed a similar behavior when facing the shortest depth, but had a significantly increased number (23.28 ± 2.35 episodes) and latency (300 ± 0.00 s) of HD compared to normal rats (9.25 ± 1.37 episodes and 185.87 ± 35.44 s) when facing the greatest depth (30 cm). This suggests that HD may be a depth-measuring behavior related to risk assessment.

The Griffiths phase-like features and the spin-phonon coupling effects observed in Tb(2)NiMnO(6) are reported. The double perovskite compound crystallizes in monoclinic P2(1)/n space group and exhibits a magnetic phase transition at T(c) similar to 111 K as an abrupt change in magnetization. A negative deviation from ideal Curie-Weiss law exhibited by 1/chi(T) curves and less-than-unity susceptibility exponents from the power-law analysis of inverse susceptibility are reminiscent of Griffiths phase-like features. Arrott plots derived from magnetization isotherms support the inhomogeneous nature of magnetism in this material. The observed effects originate from antiferromagnetic interactions that arise from inherent disorder in the system. Raman scattering experiments display no magnetic-order-induced phonon renormalization below Tc in Tb(2)NiMnO(6), which is different from the results observed in other double perovskites and is correlated to the smaller size of the rare earth. The temperature evolution of full-width-at-half-maximum for the stretching mode at 645 cm(-1) presents an anomaly that coincides with the magnetic transition temperature and signals a close connection between magnetism and lattice in this material. Just as readers feel immersed when the story line adheres to their experiences, users will more easily feel immersed in a virtual environment if the behavior of the characters in that environment adheres to their expectations, based on their lifelong observations in the real world. This paper introduces a framework that allows authors to establish natural, human-like behavior, physical interaction and emotional engagement of characters living in a virtual environment. Represented by realistic virtual characters, this framework allows people to feel immersed in an Internet based virtual world in which they can meet and share experiences in a natural way as they can meet and share experiences in real life. Rather than just being visualized in a 3D space, the virtual characters (autonomous agents as well as avatars representing users) in the immersive environment facilitate social interaction and multi-party collaboration, mixing virtual with real.

The electric current and the magnetoresistance effect are studied in a double quantum-dot system, where one of the dots QD(a) is coupled to two ferromagnetic electrodes (F-1; F-2), while the second QD(b) is connected to a superconductor S. For energy scales within the superconductor gap, electric conduction is allowed by Andreev reflection processes. Due to the presence of two ferromagnetic leads, non-local crossed Andreev reflections are possible. We found that the magnetoresistance sign can be changed by tuning the external potential applied to the ferromagnets. In addition, it is possible to control the current of the first ferromagnet (F-1) through the potential applied to the second one (F-2). We have also included intradot interaction and gate voltages at each quantum dot and analyzed their influence through a mean field approximation. The interaction reduces the current amplitudes with respect to the non-interacting case, but the switching effect still remains as a manifestation of quantum coherence, in scales of the order of the superconductor coherence length. The involvement of neurotoxicants in the etiology of emotional pathologies is becoming an issue in neurotoxicology. Lead (Pb) exposure during childhood has been associated with increased impulsivity, aggressivity, and delinquency. Considering the paucity of experimental studies investigating the involvement of developmental Pb exposure in emotional disorders, our objective was to investigate whether Pb exposure during pregnancy and/or lactation could be related to depressive symptoms in adult male and female rats. Wistar dams received 10 mg of Pb, as Pb acetate, or 13.4 mg of Na acetate, by gavage, daily, during pregnancy and lactation. By cross-fostering at the time of birth, pups were either exposed to Ph or Na acetate during pregnancy only, lactation only, or during both pregnancy and lactation. At 70 days of age, animals were submitted to the open-field test followed by the forced swimming test. Ph levels were measured in the blood of dams (weaning) and pups (after behavioral evaluation). The results demonstrated that exposure to Ph during both pregnancy and lactation induced, in males, an increased emotionality state detected in the open-field test, and in females, depressive-like behavior detected in the forced swimming test. These alterations were observed at residual blood Pb levels (i.e., around 5 mug/dL).

Zebrafish have been demonstrated to react consistently to noxious chemical stimuli and present reliable phenotypes of stress, fear, and anxiety. In this article, we describe the modulation of nociceptive-like responses of zebrafish to fear-, stress-, and anxiety-eliciting situations. Animals were exposed to an alarm substance, confinement stress, or a novel environment before being injected with 1% acetic acid in the tail. The alarm substance and confinement stress reduced the display of erratic movements and tail-beating behavior elicited by acetic acid. The novelty of the environment, in contrast, increased the frequency of tail-beating behavior. The results suggest that descending modulatory control of nociception exists in zebrafish, with apparent fear- and stress-induced analgesia and anxiety-induced hyperalgesia.

The acetic acid and phenyl-p-benzoquinone are easy and fast screening models to access the activity of novel candidates as analgesic drugs and their mechanisms. These models induce a characteristic and quantifiable overt pain-like behavior described as writhing response or abdominal contortions. The knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the chosen model is a crucial step forward demonstrating the mechanisms that the candidate drug would inhibit because the mechanisms triggered in that model will be addressed. Herein, it was investigated the role of spinal mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinase), JNK (Jun N-terminal Kinase) and p38, PI3K (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase) and microglia in the writhing response induced by acetic acid and phenyl-p-benzoquinone, and flinch induced by formalin in mice. Acetic acid and phenyl-p-benzoquinone induced significant writhing response over 20 min. The nociceptive response in these models were significantly and in a dose-dependent manner reduced by intrathecal pre-treatment with ERK (PD98059), JNK (SB600125), p38 (SB202190) or PI3K (wortmannin) inhibitors. Furthermore, the co-treatment with MAP kinase and PI3K inhibitors, at doses that were ineffective as single treatment, significantly inhibited acetic acid- and phenyl-p-benzoquinone-induced nociception. The treatment with microglia inhibitors minocycline and fluorocitrate also diminished the nociceptive response. Similar results were obtained in the formalin test. Concluding. MAP kinases and PI3K are important spinal signaling kinases in acetic acid and phenyl-p-benzoquinone models of overt pain-like behavior and there is also activation of spinal microglia indicating that it is also important to determine whether drugs tested in these models also modulate such spinal mechanisms. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the behavioral patterns associated with autism and the prevalence of these behaviors in males and females, to verify whether our model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration represents an experimental model of autism. For this, we prenatally exposed Wistar rats to LPS (100 mu g/kg, intraperitoneally, on gestational day 9.5), which mimics infection by gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, because the exact mechanisms by which autism develops are still unknown, we investigated the neurological mechanisms that might underlie the behavioral alterations that were observed. Because we previously had demonstrated that prenatal LPS decreases striatal dopamine (DA) and metabolite levels, the striatal dopaminergic system (tyrosine hydroxylase [TH] and DA receptors D1a and D2) and glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) were analyzed by using immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting, and real-time PCR. Our results show that prenatal LPS exposure impaired communication (ultrasonic vocalizations) in male pups and learning and memory (T-maze spontaneous alternation) in male adults, as well as inducing repetitive/restricted behavior, but did not change social interactions in either infancy (play behavior) or adulthood in females. Moreover, although the expression of DA receptors was unchanged, the experimental animals exhibited reduced striatal TH levels, indicating that reduced DA synthesis impaired the striatal dopaminergic system. The expression of glial cell markers was not increased, which suggests that prenatal LPS did not induce permanent neuroinflammation in the striatum. Together with our previous finding of social impairments in males, the present findings demonstrate that prenatal LPS induced autism-like effects and also a hypoactivation of the dopaminergic system. Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) agonists usually induce dose-dependent biphasic effects on anxiety-related responses. Low doses induce anxiolytic-like effects, whereas high doses are ineffective or anxiogenic, probably due to activation of Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid Type 1 (TRPV1) channels. In this study we have investigated this hypothesis by verifying the effects of the CB1/TRPV1 agonist ACEA injected into the prelimbic medial prefrontal cortex (PL) and the participation of endocannabinoids in the anxiolytic-like responses induced by TRPV1 antagonism, using the elevated plus-maze (EPM) and the Vogel conflict test (VCT). Moreover, we verified the expression of these receptors in the PL by double labeling immunofluorescence. ACEA induced anxiolytic-like effect in the intermediate dose, which was attenuated by previous injection of AM251, a CB1 receptor antagonist. The higher and ineffective ACEA dose caused anxiogenic- and anxiolytic-like effects, when injected after AM251 or the TRPV1 antagonist 6-iodonordihydrocapsaicin (6-I-CPS), respectively. Higher dose of 6-I-CPS induced anxiolytic-like effects both in the EPM and the VCT, which were prevented by previous administration of AM251. In addition, immunofluorescence showed that CB1 and TRPV1 receptors are closely located in the PL These results indicate that the endocannabinoid and endovanilloid systems interact in the PL to control anxiety-like behavior. Nickel oxide nonoparticles successfully synthesized by a polymer percursor method are studied in this work. The analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data provides a mean crystallite size of 22 +/- 2 nm which is in a good agreement with the mean size estimated from transmission electron microscopy images. Whereas the magnetization (M) vs. magnetic field (H) curve obtained at 5 K is consistent with a ferromagnetic component which coexists with an antiferromagnetic component, the presence of two peaks in the zero-field-cooled trace suggests the occurrence of two blocking process. The broad maximum at high temperature was associated with the thermal relaxation of uncompensated spins at the particle core and the low temperature peak was assigned to the freeze of surface spins clusters. Static and dynamic magnetic results suggest that the correlations of surface spins clusters show a spin-glass-like below T-g = 7.3 +/- 0.1 K with critical exponents zv = 9.7 +/- 0.5 and beta = 0.7 +/- 0.1, which are consistent with typical reported for spin-glass systems.
