A 7.4 mm thick strip of 3003 aluminum alloy produced by the industrial twin-roll casting (TRC) process was homogenized at 500 °C for 12 hours, after which it was cold rolled in two conditions: 1) to reduce the strip's thickness by 67%, and 2) to reduce it by 91%. The alloy was annealed at 400 °C for 1 hour in both conditions. The results revealed that a rotated cube texture, the {001}<110> component, predominated in the as-cast condition and was transformed into brass, copper and S type textures during the cold rolling process. There was practically no difference between the deformation textures at the two thickness reductions.

The ball milling of Fe-24Mn and Fe-24Mn-6Si mixed powders has been performed by the high energy ball milling technique. By employing X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer measurements, the composition evolution during the milling process has been investigated. The results indicate the formation of paramagnetic Fe-Mn or Fe-Mn-Si alloys with a metastable fee phase as final products, which imply that the Fe and Mn proceed a co-diffusion mechanism through the surface of fragmented powders. The thermal stability and composition evolution of the as-milled alloys were discussed comparing with the bulk alloy. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A critical test has been presented to establish the nature of the kinetic pathways for the decomposition of Fe-12 at.% Si alloy below the metastable tricritical point. The results, based on the measurements of saturation magnetization, establish that a congruent ordering from B2 --> D0(3) precedes the development of a B2 + D0(3) two-phase field, consistent with the predictions in 1976 of Allen and Cahn.

The catalytic performance of Fe/Si-2 and Fe-Mn/Si-2 catalysts for conversion of C2H6 with CO2 to C2H4 was examined in a continuous-flow and fixed-bed reactor. The results show that the Fe-Mn/Si-2 catalyst exhibits much better reaction activity and selectivity to C2H4 than those of the Fe/Si-2 catalyst. Furthermore, the coking-decoking behaviors of these catalysts were studied through TG. The catalytic performances of the catalysts after regeneration for conversion of C2H6 or dilute C2H6 in FCC off-gas with CO2 to C2H4 were also examined. The results show that both activity and selectivity of the Fe-Mn/Si-2 catalyst after regeneration reached the same level as those of the fresh catalyst, whereas it is difficult for the Fe/Si-2 catalyst to refresh its reaction behavior after regeneration.

The micromechanical aspects of rolling texture development in Ni-40 wt.% Co alloy during very large reductions (up to epsilon(t) = 3.9) have been studied. The alloy showed a typical Cu-type texture up to a true strain of epsilon(t) = 3; however, the texture undergoes an abrupt transition to Bs-type on further rolling to epsilon(t) approximate to 4. (The Bs-type texture, here, comprises almost equal fractions of Goss and Bs components.) Microstructural observations, at early stages, show that deformation is accommodated entirely by slip, and very little presence of deformation twinning is observed to explain the texture transition. However, at much higher reduction levels, micrographs show a high fraction of Cu-type shear bands. These bands are predominantly found in Cu-oriented grains and the crystallites inside the shear bands are preferentially oriented towards Goss, which could explain the final texture evolution. The coexistence of quasicrystals and rational approximant structures (RAS) has been observed in melt-spun Al80Cr14Si6, Al80Mn14Si6 and Al75Mn10Cr5Si10 alloys. The presence of a b.c.c. alpha-AlMnSi phase in Al-Mn-Si and alpha-AlMnSi(Cr) phase in Al-Mn-Cr-Si has been seen. A multiple twinning around an irrational axis of the RAS has been reported in an aggregate of fine size cubic crystallites in all three alloys. Selected area diffraction patterns show that the crystalline aggregate symmetry is linked to the icosahedral point group symmetry (m35). Various ways of expressing the twin relationship in the cubic crystalline aggregates have been discussed. The thermal stability of the icosahedral phase at high temperatures reveals that the icosahedral phase in Al-Mn-Si and Al-Mn-Cr-Si alloys transforms to alpha-AlMnSi at temperatures of 690 and 670 K, respectively. In Al-Cr-Si alloy, heating to a high temperature (615 K) leads to the transformation of the icosahedral phase into a new metastable phase having an ordered cubic structure equivalent to alpha-AlMnSi. The occurrence of multiple twinning leading to icosahedral symmetry in the as-spun Al-Cr-Si alloy is presumably due to this metastable phase. Copyright (C) 1996 Acta Metallurgica Inc.

The coarsening kinetics of Ni3 Si(γ') precipitate in a binary Ni-Si alloy containing 6.5 wt. % silicon was studied by magnetic techniques and transmission electronmicroscopy. A calibration curve was established to determine the concentration of silicon in the matrix. The variation of the Si content of the Ni-rich matrix as a function of time follows Lifshitz and Wagner theory for diffusion controlled coarsening phenomena. The estimated values of equilibrium solubility of silicon in the matrix represent the true coherent equilibrium solubilities.

The experimental particle-size distributions and average particle size were determined from dark field electron micrographs. The average particle size varies linearly with t-1/3 as suggested by Lifshitz and Wagner. The experimental distributions of particle sizes differ slightly from the theoretical curve at the early stages of aging, but the agreement is satisfactory at the later stages. The values of diffusion coefficient of silicon, interfacial free energy and activation energy were calculated from the results of coarsening kinetics. The experimental value of effective diffusion coefficient is in satisfactory agreement with the value predicted by the application of irreversible the rmodynamics to the process of volume constrained growth of coherent precipitate during coarsening. The coherent γ' particles in Ni-Sialloy unlike those in Ni-Al and Ni-Ti seem to lose coherency at high temperature. A mechanism for the formation of semi-coherent precipitate is suggested.

Nach einer kurzen Einführung in die Entwicklung der magnetischen Anwendungen, werden in Kapitel 2 und 3 die physikalischen Grundlagen der Messmethoden, insbesondere die Rastertunnelspektroskopie und Kerr-Magnetometrie, sowie der experimentelle Aufbau erläutert. Kapitel 4 beschäftigt sich mit den magnetischen Eigenschaften von quasi ein-dimensionalen ferromagnetischen Nanostreifen und Monolagen, die durch Selbstorganisation auf einem Wolfram(110)-Einkristall mit vizinaler und glatter Oberfläche präpariert werden. Hierbei wird die Temperaturabhängigkeit der magnetischen Größen, wie Remanenz, Sättigungsmagnetisierung und Suszeptibilität, sowie die Auswirkung einer Abdeckung des Systems auf die Domänenwandenergie und Anisotropie untersucht. Zusätzlich wird die Kopplung von parallelen Nanostreifen in Abhängigkeit des Streifenabstandes betrachtet. In Kapitel 5 werden das Wachstum und die Morphologie von Co-Monolagen auf W(110) untersucht. Der Übergang von pseudomorphem zu dicht gepacktem Wachstum in der Monolage wird mit Hilfe der Rastertunnelspektroskopie sichtbar gemacht, ebenso wie unterschiedliche Stapelfolgen in Tripellagen Co-Systemen. Atomar aufgelöste Rastertunnelmikroskopie erlaubt die genauen Atompositionen der Oberfläche zu bestimmen und mit theoretischen Wachstumsmodellen zu vergleichen. Auf die Untersuchung zwei-dimensionaler binärer Co-Fe und Fe-Mn Legierungen auf W(110) wird in Kapitel 6 eingegangen. Mit einer Präparationstemperatur von T=520 K ist es möglich, atomar geordnete Co-Fe Legierungsmonolagen wachsen zu lassen. Ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen der Magnetisierung und der lokalen Zustandsdichte in Abhängigkeit der Legierungszusammensetzung wird gezeigt.

The main stages of the sedimentary cycle of uranium in modern marine basins are under consideration in the book. Annually about 18 thousand tons of dissolved and suspended uranium enters the ocean with river runoff. Depending on a type of a marine basin uranium accumulated either in sediments of deep-sea basins, or in sediments of continental shelves and slopes. In the surface layer of marine sediments hydrogenic uranium is predominantly bound with organic matter, and in ocean sediments also with iron, manganese and phosphorus. In diagenetic processes there occurs partial redistribution of uranium in sediments, as well as its concentration in iron-manganese, phosphate and carbonate nodules and biogenic phosphate detritus. Concentration of uranium in marine sediments of various types depending on their composition, as well as on forms of its entering, degree of differentiation and of sedimentation rates, on hydrochemical regime and water circulation, and on intensity of diagenetic processes.

Chemical analyzes show that interstitial waters from ore-bearing bottom sediments of the Atlantis II and Discovery Deeps are enriched in Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, Zn, Pb, and Cd compared to sea water. Enrichment factors of these trace elements in the interstitial waters of the Atlantis II Deep relative to the sea water vary within the following ranges: for Fe from 100 to 7000, for Mn from 19047 to 32738, for Zn from 500 to 1600, for Pb from 78333 to 190000, for Cu from 107 to 654. Comparison of average weighted concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni in the bottom sediments and the interstitial waters of the Atlantis II Deep indicates common regularities and good relationship in distribution of these elements along sediment cores. Differences in concentrations and distribution of the studied trace elements in the interstitial waters of the Atlantis II and Discovery Deeps result from different chemical compositions of hydrothermal fluids entering these deeps.
