The cobalt carbide (Co2C) species was formed in some activated carbon supported cobalt-based (Co/AC) catalysts during the activation of catalysts. It was found that the activity of Fischer-Tropsch reaction over Co-based catalysts decreased due to the formation of cobalt carbide species. Some promoters and pretreatment of activated carbon with steam could restrain the formation of cobalt carbide.

The effect of support on the properties of rhodium and cobalt-based catalysts for ethanol steam reforming was studied in this work, by comparing the use of magnesia, alumina and Mg-Al oxide (obtained from hydrotalcite) as supports. It was found that metallic rhodium particles with around 2.4-2.6 nm were formed on all supports, but Mg-Al oxide led to the narrowest particles size distribution; cobalt was supposed to be located on the support, affecting its acidity. Rhodium interacts strongly with the support in the order: alumina> Mg-Al oxide > magnesia. The magnesium-containing catalysts showed low ethene selectivity and high hydrogen selectivity while the alumina-based ones showed high ethene selectivity, assigned to the Lewis sites of alumina. The Mg-Al oxide-supported rhodium and cobalt catalyst was the most promising sample to produce hydrogen by ethanol reforming, showing the highest hydrogen yield, low ethene selectivity and high specific surface area during reaction. Two types of SiO2 with different mesopore size and HZSM-5 zeolite were used to prepare hybrid supported cobalt-based catalysts. The textual and structural properties of the catalysts were studied using N-2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) techniques. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) performances of the catalysts were carried out in a fixed-bed reactor. The combination effects of the meso- and micropores of the supports as well as the interaction between supports and cobalt particles on FTS activity are discussed. The results indicate that the catalyst supported on the tailor-made SiO2 and HZSM-5 hybrid maintained both meso- and micropore pores during the preparation process without HZSM-5 particles agglomerating. The mesopores provided quick mass transfer channels, while the micropores contributed to high metal dispersion and accelerated hydrocracking/hydroisomerization reaction rate. High CO conversion of 83.9% and selectivity to gasoline-range hydrocarbons (C-5-C-12) of 55%, including more than 10% isoparaffins, were achieved simultaneously on this type of catalyst.

An attractive Fischer-Tropsch catalyst was prepared using an activated carbon as carrier to support cobalt based catalysts. Zr promoted Co/AC catalysts remarkably enhanced the activity and the selectivity toward diesel distillates and lower the methane selectivity. This modification may be attributed to specific behavior of activated carbon with high surface area and the weak interaction between metallic cobalt active sites and activated carbon. It was emphasized that the pore size of activated carbon played a very important role in restricting the growth of carbon chain to wax.

The behavior of different species during the temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) of methane over various catalysts is traced by an online mass spectrometer, It is demonstrated that the transformation of MoO3 to molybdenum carbide hinders the activation of methane as well as the succeeding aromatization in the TPSR, If this transformation process is done before the reaction, the temperature needed for methane activation and benzene formation will be greatly lowered (760 and 847 K, respectively). On the basis of comparison of the catalytic behavior of molybdenum supported on different zeolites, it is suggested that the initial activation of methane is the rate-determining step of this reaction. For the cobalt catalysts supported on HMCM-22 or Mo catalysts supported on TiO2, no benzene formation could be observed during the TPSR, However, the prohibition of benzene formation is different in nature over these two catalysts: the former lacks the special properties exhibited by molybdenum carbide, which can continuously activate methane even when multiple layers of carbonaceous species are formed on its surface, while the latter cannot accomplish the aromatization reaction since there are no Bronsted acid sites to which the activated intermediates can migrate, although the activation of methane can be achieved on it. Only for the catalysts that possess both of these properties, together with the special channel structure of zeolite, can efficient methane aromatization be accomplished. (C) 2000 Academic Press.

Electrochemical water splitting used for generating hydrogen has attracted increasingly attention due to energy and environmental issues. It is a major challenge to design an efficient, robust and inexpensive electrocatalyst to achieve preferable catalytic performance. Herein, a novel three-dimensional (3D) electrocatalyst was prepared by decorating nanostructured biological material-derived carbon nanofibers with in situ generated cobalt-based nanospheres (denoted as CNF@Co) through a facile approach. The interconnected porous 3D networks of the resulting CNF@Co catalyst provide abundant channels and interfaces, which remarkably favor both mass transfer and oxygen evolution. The as-prepared CNF@Co shows excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxygen evolution reactions with an onset potential of about 0.445 V vs. Ag/AgCl. It only needs a low overpotential of 314 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm2 in 1.0 M KOH. Furthermore, the CNF@Co catalyst exhibits excellent stability towards water oxidation, even outperforming commercial IrO<inf>2</inf> and RuO<inf>2</inf> catalysts.

Using density functional theory, we have investigated the catalytic properties of bimetallic complex catalysts PtlAum(CO)n (l + m = 2, n = 1–3) in the reduction of SO2 by CO. Due to the strong coupling between the C-2p and metal 5d orbitals, pre-adsorption of CO molecules on the PtlAum is found to be very effective in not only reducing the activation energy, but also preventing poisoning by sulfur. As result of the coupling, the metal 5d band is broadened and down-shifted, and charge is transferred from the CO molecules to the PtlAum. As SO2 is adsorbed on the catalyst, partial charge moves to the anti-σ bonding orbitals between S and O in SO2, weakening the S–O bond strength. This effect is enhanced by pre-adsorbing up to three CO molecules, therefore the S–O bonds become vulnerable. Our results revealed the mechanism of the excellent catalytic properties of the bimetallic complex catalysts.

The paper presents the synthesis of a new class of gamma-gamma' cobalt-based superalloy that is free of tungsten as an alloying addition. It has much lower density and higher specific strength than the existing cobalt-based superalloys. The current superalloys have a base composition of Co-10Al and are further tuned by the addition of a binary combination of molybdenum and niobium, with the optimum composition of Co-10Al-5Mo-2Nb. The solvus temperature of the alloy (866 degrees C) can be further enhanced above 950 C by the addition of Ni to give the form Co-xNi-10Al-5Mo-2Nb, where x can be from 0 to 30 at.%. After heat treatment, these alloys exhibit a duplex microstructure with coherent cuboidal L1(2)-ordered precipitates (gamma') throughout the face-centred cubic matrix (gamma), yielding a microstructure that is very similar to nickel-based superalloys as well as recently developed Co-Al-W-based alloys. We show that the stability of the gamma' phase improves significantly with the nickel addition, which can be attributed to the increase in solvus temperature. A very high specific 0.2% proof stress of 94.3 MPa g(-1) cm(-3) at room temperature and 63.8 MPa g(-1) cm(-3) at 870 degrees C were obtained for alloy Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Nb. The remarkably high specific strength of these alloys makes this class of alloy a promising material for use at high temperature, including gas turbine applications. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc.
