Vapour phase oxidation of anthracene over cobalt molybdate catalyst was investigated in an isothermal flow reactor in the temperature range of 280—340°C. Fifteen different models based on redox, Langmuir—Hinshelwood and Rideal mechanisms were tested in order to elucidate the mechanism of the above reaction. These models were compared on the basis of three criteria and were finally discriminated employing the non-intrinsic parameter method. Two-stage redox mechanism was found to explain the data satisfactorily.

In this work, we prepared a new magnetically recoverable CoO catalyst through the deposition of the catalytic active metal nanoparticles of 2-3 nm on silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles to facilitate the solid separation from liquid media. The catalyst was fully characterized and presented interesting properties in the oxidation of cyclohexene, as for example, selectivity to the allylic oxidation product. It was also observed that CoO is the most active species when compared to Co(2+), Co(3)O(4) and Fe(3)O(4) in the catalytic conditions studied.

With addition of methanol in acetic acid solvent, m-phenoxytoluene could be oxidized to m-phenoxybenzaldehyde selectively by a cobalt bromide catalyst. Paratemters such as the ratio of Co/Br and the reaction time of m-phenoxytoluene oxidation as well as visible spectra of cobalt bromide in acetic acid/methanol solvents, were also investigated. Addition of methanol caused the oxidation of aldehydes to proceed more slowly than it did solely in acetic acid solvent. The decrease of cobaltous-multibromides in acetic acid/methanol solvents was responsible for the improvement in the selective oxidation of m-phenoxytoluene. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. We show that catalyst pretreatment conditions can have a profound effect on the chiral distribution in single-walled carbon nanotube chemical vapor deposition. Using a SiO2-supported cobalt model catalyst and pretreatment in NH3, we obtain a comparably narrowed chiral distribution with a downshifted tube diameter range, independent of the hydrocarbon source. Our findings demonstrate that the state of the catalyst at the point of carbon nanotube nucleation is of fundamental importance for chiral control, thus identifying the pretreatment atmosphere as a key parameter for control of diameter and chirality distributions. © 2014 American Chemical Society.

Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) is a cheap, safe and readily available alternative to the commonly used hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorite for the phase-transfer catalytic epoxidation of alpha,beta-enones under non-aqueous conditions. A variety of chalcone derivatives give the corresponding epoxides with quantitative conversion and satisfactory yields in just a few hours under mild conditions. An asymmetric variant of the epoxidation can be carried out in the presence of chiral N-anthracenylmethylcinchonidine bromide catalyst giving 73-93% ees and 76-94% yields.

This review collects and summarises the biological applications of the element cobalt. Small amounts of the ferromagnetic metal can be found in rock, soil, plants and animals, but is mainly obtained as a by-product of nickel and copper mining, and is separated from the ores (mainly cobaltite, erythrite, glaucodot and skutterudite) using a variety of methods. Compounds of cobalt include several oxides, including: green cobalt(II) (CoO), blue cobalt(II,III) (Co3O4), and black cobalt(III) (Co2O3); four halides including pink cobalt(II) fluoride (CoF2), blue cobalt(II) chloride (CoCl2), green cobalt(II) bromide (CoBr2), and blue-black cobalt(II) iodide (CoI2). The main application of cobalt is in its metal form in cobalt-based super alloys, though other uses include lithium cobalt oxide batteries, chemical reaction catalyst, pigments and colouring, and radioisotopes in medicine. It is known to mimic hypoxia on the cellular level by stabilizing the α subunit of hypoxia inducing factor (HIF), when chemically applied as cobalt chloride (CoCl2). This is seen in many biological research applications, where it has shown to promote angiogenesis, erythropoiesis and anaerobic metabolism through the transcriptional activation of genes such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and erythropoietin (EPO), contributing significantly to the pathophysiology of major categories of disease, such as myocardial, renal and cerebral ischaemia, high altitude related maladies and bone defects. As a necessary constituent for the formation of vitamin B12, it is essential to all animals, including humans, however excessive exposure can lead to tissue and cellular toxicity. Cobalt has been shown to provide promising potential in clinical applications, however further studies are necessary to clarify its role in hypoxia-responsive genes and the applications of cobalt-chloride treated tissues.

While Mo in the Co-Mo/y-A1203 hydrodesulfurization catalyst is present as a sulfidic species similar to MoS2, Co shows two types of coordination, one with six sulfurs (but not a bulk sulfide) and the other with four oxygens. The significance of such species is discussed. In addition to an additive relation of the EXAFS function and the residual spectra, the ratio of amplitude terms of the catalyst and the model system has been employed in the analysis.

We used a cyclic reactive ion etching (RIE) process to increase the Co catalyst density on a cobalt disilicide (CoSi2) substrate for carbon nanotube (CNT) growth. Each cycle of catalyst formation consists of a room temperature RIE step and an annealing step at 450 °C. The RIE step transfers the top-surface of CoSi2 into cobalt fluoride; while the annealing reduces the fluoride into metallic Co nanoparticles. We have optimized this cyclic RIE process and determined that the catalyst density can be doubled in three cycles, resulting in a final CNT shell density of 6.6 × 10 11 walls·cm-2. This work demonstrates a very effective approach to increase the CNT density grown directly on silicides. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
