We analyse the relation between local two-atom and total multi-atom entanglements in the Dicke system composed of a large number of atoms. We use concurrence as a measure of entanglement between two atoms in the multi-atom system, and the spin squeezing parameter as a measure of entanglement in the whole n-atom system. In addition, the influence of the squeezing phase and bandwidth on entanglement in the steady-state Dicke system is discussed. It is shown that the introduction of a squeezed field leads to a significant enhancement of entanglement between two atoms, and the entanglement increases with increasing degree of squeezing and bandwidth of the incident squeezed field. In the presence of a coherent field the entanglement exhibits a strong dependence on the relative phase between the squeezed and coherent fields, that can jump quite rapidly from unentangled to strongly entangled values when the phase changes from zero to pi. We find that the jump of the degree of entanglement is due to a flip of the spin squeezing from one quadrature component of the atomic spin to the other component when the phase changes from zero to pi. We also analyse the dependence of the entanglement on the number of atoms and find that, despite the reduction in the degree of entanglement between two atoms, a large entanglement is present in the whole n-atom system and the degree of entanglement increases as the number of atoms increases.

We present an experimental analysis of quadrature entanglement produced from a pair of amplitude squeezed beams. The correlation matrix of the state is characterized within a set of reasonable assumptions, and the strength of the entanglement is gauged using measures of the degree of inseparability and the degree of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox. We introduce controlled decoherence in the form of optical loss to the entangled state, and demonstrate qualitative differences in the response of the degrees of inseparability and EPR paradox to this loss. The entanglement is represented on a photon number diagram that provides an intuitive and physically relevant description of the state. We calculate efficacy contours for several quantum information protocols on this diagram, and use them to predict the effectiveness of our entanglement in those protocols.

This paper discusses methods for the optical teleportation of continuous-variable polarization states. We show that using two pairs of entangled beams, generated using four squeezed beams, perfect teleportation of optical polarization states can be performed. Restricting ourselves to three squeezed beams, we demonstrate that polarization state teleportation can still exceed the classical limit. The three-squeezer schemes involve either the use of quantum nondemolition measurement or biased entanglement generated from a single squeezed beam. We analyze the efficacies of these schemes in terms of fidelity, signal transfer coefficients, and quantum correlations.

We describe a generalization of the cluster-state model of quantum computation to continuous-variable systems, along with a proposal for an optical implementation using squeezed-light sources, linear optics, and homodyne detection. For universal quantum computation, a nonlinear element is required. This can be satisfied by adding to the toolbox any single-mode non-Gaussian measurement, while the initial cluster state itself remains Gaussian. Homodyne detection alone suffices to perform an arbitrary multimode Gaussian transformation via the cluster state. We also propose an experiment to demonstrate cluster-based error reduction when implementing Gaussian operations.

Transient photoconductivity and its light-induced change were investigated by using a Model 4400 boxcar averager and signal processor for lightly boron-doped a-Si : H films. The transient photoconductivities of the sample were measured at an annealed state and light-soaked states. The transient decay process of the photoconductivity can be fitted fairly well by a second-order exponential decay function, which indicates that the decay process is related with two different traps. It is noteworthy that the photoconductivity of the film increases after light-soaking. This may be due to the deactivity of the boron acceptor B-4(-), and thus some of the boron atoms can no longer act as acceptors and drives E-F to shifts upward. Consequently, the number of effective recombination centers may be reduced and so the photoconductivity increases.

The effects of hydrogen dilution, subtle boron compensation, and light-soaking on the gap states of hydrogenated amorphous silicon films (a-Si:H) near and above the threshold of microcrystallinity have been investigated in detail by the constant photocurrent method and the improved phase-shift analysis of modulated photocurrent technique. It is shown that high hydrogen dilution near the threshold of microcrystallinity leads to a more ordered network structure and to the redistribution of gap states; it gives rise to a small peak at about 0.55 eV and a shoulder at about 1.2 eV below the conduction band edge, which are associated with the formation of microcrystallites embedded in the amorphous silicon host matrix. A concurrent subtle boron compensation is demonstrated to prevent excessive formation of microcrystallinity, and to help promote the growth of the ordered regions and reduce the density of gap defect states, particularly those associated with microcrystallites. Hydrogen-diluted and appropriately boron-compensated a-Si:H films deposited near the threshold of microcrystallinity show the lowest density of the defects in both the annealed and light-soaked states, and hence, the highest performance and stability. The realization of nonclassical states is an important task for many applications of quantum information processing. Usually, properly tailored interactions, different from goal to goal, are considered in order to accomplish specific tasks within the general framework of quantum state engineering. In this paper, we remark on the flexibility of a cross-Kerr nonlinear coupling in hybrid systems as an important ingredient in the engineering of nonclassical states. The general scenario we consider is the implementation of high cross-Kerr nonlinearity in cavity-quantum electrodynamics. In this context, we discuss the possibility of performing entanglement transfer and swapping between matter qubits and light fields initially prepared in separable coherent states. The recently introduced concept of entanglement reciprocation is also considered and shown to be possible with our scheme. We reinterpret some of our results in terms of applications of a generalized Ising interaction to systems of different nature.

Nonclassical states of a mechanical mode at nonzero temperature are achieved in a scheme that combines radiation-pressure coupling to a light field and photon subtraction. The scheme embodies an original and experimentally realistic way to obtain mesoscopic quantumness by putting together two mature technologies for quantum control. The protocol is quasi-insensitive to mechanical damping.

In this paper we report on a search for short-duration gravitational wave bursts in the frequency range 64 Hz-1792 Hz associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), using data from GEO 600 and one of the LIGO or Virgo detectors. We introduce the method of a linear search grid to analyze GRB events with large sky localization uncertainties, for example the localizations provided by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). Coherent searches for gravitational waves (GWs) can be computationally intensive when the GRB sky position is not well localized, due to the corrections required for the difference in arrival time between detectors. Using a linear search grid we are able to reduce the computational cost of the analysis by a factor of O(10) for GBM events. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our analysis pipeline can improve upon the sky localization of GRBs detected by the GBM, if a high-frequency GW signal is observed in coincidence. We use the method of the linear grid in a search for GWs associated with 129 GRBs observed satellite-based gamma-ray experiments between 2006 and 2011. The GRBs in our sample had not been previously analyzed for GW counterparts. A fraction of our GRB events are analyzed using data from GEO 600 while the detector was using squeezed-light states to improve its sensitivity; this is the first search for GWs using data from a squeezed-light interferometric observatory. We find no evidence for GW signals, either with any individual GRB in this sample or with the population as a whole. For each GRB we place lower bounds on the distance to the progenitor, under an assumption of a fixed GW emission energy of 10(-2)M circle dot c(2), with a median exclusion distance of 0.8 Mpc for emission at 500 Hz and 0.3 Mpc at 1 kHz. The reduced computational cost associated with a linear search grid will enable rapid searches for GWs associated with Fermi GBM events once the advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors begin operation.

A state-of-the-art review on holographic optical elements (HOE) is presented in two parts. In Part I a conceptual overview and an assessment of the current status on the design of HOE have been included. It is pointed out that HOE development based on the use of squeezed light, speckle, non-linear recording, comparative studies between optics and communication approaches, are some of the promising directions for future research in this vital area of photonics.

The hole subband structures and effective masses of tensile strained Si/Si1-yGey quantum wells are calculated by using the 6x6 k.p method. The results show that when the tensile strain is induced in the quantum well, the light-hole state becomes the ground state, and the light hole effective masses in the growth direction are strongly reduced while the in-plane effective masses are considerable. Quantitative calculation of the valence intersubband transition between two light hole states in a 7nm tensile strained Si/Si0.55Ge0.45 quantum well grown on a relaxed Si0.5Ge0.5 (100) substrates shows a large absorption coefficient of 8400 cm(-1).

The shape dependence of electronic structure, electron g factors in the presence of the external magnetic field of InSb quantum ellipsoids are investigated in the framework of eight-band effective-mass approximation. It is found that as the increasing aspect ratio e, the electron states with P character split into three doublets for the different physical interaction and the light-hole states with S character come up to the top of valence bands at e = 2.6 in comparison with the heavy-hole states. In the presence of the external magnetic field, the energy splits of electron states are different for their wave function distribution direction, and the hole ground state remain optical active for a suitable aspect ratio. The electron g factors of InSb spheres decrease with increasing radius, and have the value of about two for the smallest radius, about -47.2 for sufficiently larger radius, similar to the bulk material case. Actually, the electron g factors decrease as any one of the three dimensions increase. The more dimensions increase, the more g factors decrease. The dimensions perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field affect the g factors more than the other dimensions. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electronic structure, electron and hole g factors and optical properties of CdTe quantum ellipsoids are investigated, in the framework of eight-band effective-mass approximation. It is found that the light-hole states come down in comparison with the heavy-hole states when the spheres are elongated, and become the lowest states of valence band. When the aspect ratio of the ellipsoid length to diameter (e) changes from smaller than 1 to larger than 1, the linear polarization factors change from negative to positive. The electron g factors of CdTe spheres decrease with increasing radius, and are nearly 2 when the radius is very small. Actually, as some of the three dimensions increase, the electron g factors decrease. More dimensions increase, the g factors decrease. more. The dimensions perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field affect the g factors more than the other dimension. The light-hole and heavy-hole g factors of quantum spheres are equal, and change from 0.88 to -1.14 with increasing radius. When e < 1 (e > 1) the light-hole g factor is smaller (larger) than the heavy-hole g factor. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
