A set of varying-thickness Au-films were thermally evaporated onto poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) thin film surfaces. The Au/PSA bi-layer targets were then implanted with 50 keV N+ ions to a fluence of 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 to promote metal-to-polymer adhesion and to enhance their mechanical and electrical performance. Electrical conductivity measurements of the implanted Au/PSA thin films showed a sharp percolation behavior versus the pre-implant Au-film thickness with a percolation threshold near the nominal thickness of 44 Å. The electrical conductivity results are discussed along with the film microstructure and the elemental diffusion/mixing within the Au/PSA interface obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ion beam analysis techniques (RBS and ERD).

Bilayer thin films of Bi/As2S3 were prepared from Bi and As2S3 by thermal evaporation technique under high vacuum. We have prepared three bilayer films of 905nm, 910nm and 915nm thickness with with As2S3 as bottom layer (900nm) and Bi as top layer (5,10,15 nm). We have compared the optical changes due to the thickness variation of Bi layer on As2S3 film. The changes were characterized by FTIR and XPS techniques.

The role of Bi layer (thickness similar to 7 nm) on As2S3 film was extensively studied for different optical applications in which Bi (top layer) as active and diffusing layer and As2S3 as barrier (matrix) layer. Bilayer thin films of Bi/As2S3 were prepared from Bi and As2S3 by thermal evaporation technique under high vacuum. The decrease of optical band gap with the addition of Bi to As2S3 has been explained on the basis of density of states and the increase in disorder in the system. It was found that the efficient changes of optical parameters (transmission, optical band gap, refraction) could be realized due to the photo induced diffusion activated by the focused 532 nm laser irradiation and formation of different bonds. The diffusion of Bi into As2S3 matrix increases the optical band gap producing photo bleaching effect. The changes were characterised by different experimental techniques. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The growing threats due to increased use of small-caliber armor piercing projectiles demand the development of new light-weight body armor materials. In this context, TiB2 appears to be a promising ceramic material. However, poor sinterability and low fracture toughness remain two major issues for TiB2. In order to address these issues together, Ti as a sinter-aid is used to develop TiB2-(x wt pct Ti), (x = 10, 20) homogeneous composites and a bi-layered composite (BLC) with each layer having Ti content of 10 and 20 wt pct. The present study uniquely demonstrates the efficacy of two-stage spark plasma sintering route to develop dense TiB2-Ti composites with an excellent combination of nanoscale hardness (similar to 36 GPa) and indentation fracture toughness (similar to 12 MPa m(1/2)). In case of BLC, these properties are not compromised w.r.t. homogeneous composites, suggesting the retention of baseline material properties even in the bi-layer design due to optimal relief of residual stresses. The better indentation toughness of TiB2-(10 wt pct Ti) and TiB2-(20 wt pct Ti) composites can be attributed to the observed crack deflection/arrest, indicating better damage tolerance. Transmission electron microscope investigation reveals the presence of dense dislocation networks and deformation twins in alpha-Ti at the grain boundaries and triple pockets, surrounded by TiB2 grains. The dynamic strength of around 4 GPa has been measured using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar tests in a reproducible manner at strain rates of the order of 600 s(-1). The damage progression under high strain rate has been investigated by acquiring real time images for the entire test duration using ultra-high speed imaging. An attempt has been made to establish microstructure-property correlation and a simple analysis based on Mohr-Coulomb theory is used to rationalize the measured strength properties.

There has been significant progress in the past 2 decades in the field of organic and polymer thin-film transistors. In this paper, we report a combination of stable materials, device architecture, and process conditions that resulted in a patterned gate, small channel length (<5 μm) device that possesses a scaled field-induced conductivity in air that is higher than any organic/polymer transistor reported thus far. The operating voltage is below 10 V; the on-off ratio is high; and the active materials are solution-processable. The semiconducting polymer is a new donor-acceptor polymer with furan-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole and thienyl-vinylene-thienyl building blocks in the conjugated backbone. One of the major striking features of our work is that the patterned-gate device architecture is suitable for practical applications. We also propose a figure of merit to meaningfully compare polymer/organic transistor performance that takes into account mobility and operating voltage. With this figure of merit, we compare leading organic and polymer transistors that have been hitherto reported. The material and device architecture have shown very high mobility and low operating voltage for such short channel length (below 5 μm) organic/polymer transistors.

Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based organic semiconductors EH-DPP-TFP and EH-DPP-TFPV with branched ethyl-hexyl solubilizing alkyl chains and end capped with trifluoromethyl phenyl groups were designed and synthesized via Suzuki coupling. These compounds show intense absorptions up to 700 nm, and thin film-forming characteristics that sensitively depend on the solvent and coating conditions. Both materials have been used as electron donors in bulk heterojunction and bilayer organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices with fullerenes as acceptors and their performance has been studied in detail. The best power conversion efficiency of 3.3% under AM1.5G illumination (100 mW cm -2) was achieved for bilayer solar cells when EH-DPP-TFPV was used with C 60, after a thermal annealing step to induce dye aggregation and interdiffusion of C 60 with the donor material. To date, this is one of the highest efficiencies reported for simple bilayer OPV devices.

Through larger-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the impacts from vacancy-initiated linkages on the thermal conductivity of bilayer graphene sheets (of size L × W = 24.5 nm × 3.7 nm). Three different interlayer linkages, including divacancy bridging, “spiro” interstitial bridging and Frenkel pair defects, are considered. It is found that the presence of interlayer linkages induces a significant degradation in the thermal conductivity of the bilayer graphene sheet. The degradation is strongly dependent on the interlayer linkage type, concentration and location. More importantly, the linkages that contain vacancies lead to more severe suppression of the thermal conductivity, in agreement with theoretical predictions that vacancies induce strong phonon scattering. Our finding provides useful guidelines for the application of multilayer graphene sheets in practical thermal management.

Light emitting field effect transistors (LEFETs) are emerging as a multi-functional class of optoelectronic devices. LEFETs can simultaneously execute light emission and the standard logic functions of a transistor in a single architecture. However, current LEFET architectures deliver either high brightness or high efficiency but not both concurrently, thus limiting their use in technological applications. Here we show an LEFET device strategy that simultaneously improves brightness and efficiency. The key step change in LEFET performance arises from the bottom gate top-contact device architecture in which the source/drain electrodes are semitransparent and the active channel contains a bi-layer comprising of a high mobility charge-transporting polymer, and a yellow-green emissive polymer. A record external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.1% at 1000cd/m2 is demonstrated for polymer based bilayer LEFETs.

Graphene is a fascinating new nanocarbon possessing, single-, bi- or few- (<= ten) layers of carbon atoms forming six-membered rings. Different types of graphene have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The extraordinary electronic properties of single-and bi-layer graphenes are indeed most unique and unexpected. Other properties of graphene such as gas adsorption characteristics, magnetic and electrochemical properties and the effects of doping by electrons and holes are equally noteworthy. Interestingly, molecular charge-transfer also markedly affects the electronic structure and properties of graphene. Many aspects of graphene are yet to be explored, including synthetic strategies which can yield sufficient quantities of graphene with the desired number of layers.

We report experimental evidence for a huge pair breaking effect induced by spin polarized quasiparticles in a YBa2Cu3O7-delta/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 bi-layer fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. The temperature dependent magnetization measurements show evidence for the presence of both ferromagnetic and diamagnetic phases in the bi-layer. The current dependent electrical transport studies in the bi-layer exhibit a significant reduction in the superconducting transition temperature with the increase in applied current as compared to a single YBa2Cu3O7-delta layer and it follows a I-2/3 dependence in accordance with the pair breaking effect. Here, we find that the current driven from a ferromagnetic electrode with low spin polarization, such as La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (-11%), into the superconductor can act as a strong pair breaker. This indicates that the spin polarization of the injecting electrode is not the only criterion in determining the pair breaking effect, rather the transparency of the interface for the spin polarization may also be significant. More interestingly, the spin diffusion length for YBa2Cu3O7-delta has a much longer length scale than that reported earlier in the study of ferromagnetic/superconducting heterostructures.

Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMCs) are a class of Electro-Active Polymers (EAPs) consisting of a base polymer (usually Nafion), sandwiched between thin films of electrodes and an electrolyte. Apart from fuel cell like proton exchange process in Nafion, these IPMCs can act both as an actuator and a sensor. Typically, IPMCs have been known for their applications in fuel cell technology and in artificial muscles for robots. However, more recently, sensing properties of IPMC have opened up possibilities of mechanical energy harvesting. In this paper, we consider a bi-layer stack of IPMC membranes where fluid flow induced cyclic oscillation allows collection of electronic charge across a pair of functionalized electrode on the surface of IPMC layers/stacks. IPMCs work well in hydrated environment; more specifically, in presence of an electrolyte, and therefore, have great potential in underwater applications like hydrodynamic energy harvesting. Hydrodynamic forces produce bending deformation, which can induce transport of cations via polymer chains of the base polymer of Nafion or PTFE. In our experimental set-up, the deformation is induced into the array of IPMC membranes immersed in electrolyte by water waves caused by a plunger connected to a stepper motor. The frequency and amplitude of the water waves is controlled by the stepper motor through a micro-controller. The generated electric power is measured across a resistive load. Few orders of magnitude increase in the harvested power density is observed. Analytical modeling approach used for power and efficiency calculations are discussed. The observed electro-mechanical performance promises a host of underwater energy harvesting applications.

Single crystal X-ray structural analysis of a septanoside, namely, n-pentyl-2-chloro-2-deoxy sept-3-uloside (1) provides many finer details of the molecular structure, in addition to its preferred twist-chair conformation, namely, (TC3,4)-T-5,6 conformation. Structural analysis reveals a dense network of O-H...O, C-H...O and van der Waals interactions that stabilize interdigitized, planar bi-layer structure of the crystal lattice. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Using first principles calculations, we show that the overlapping defects in bi-layer graphene (both AA-and AB-stacked) interact forming inter-layer covalent bonds, giving rise to two-dimensional (2D) clipped structures, without explicit use of functional groups. These clipped structures can be transformed into one-dimensional (1D) double wall nanotubes (DWCNT) or multi-layered three dimensional (3D) bulk structures. These clipped structures show good mechanical strength due to covalent bonding between multi-layers. Clipping also provides a unique way to simultaneously harness the conductivity of both walls of a double wall nanotube through covalently bonded scattering junctions. With additional conducting channels and improved mechanical stability, these clipped structures can lead to a myriad of applications in novel devices. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this presentation, we report excellent electrical and optical characteristics of a dual gate photo thin film transistor (TFT) with bi-layer oxide channel, which was designed to provide virgin threshold voltage (V T) control, improve the negative bias illumination temperature stress (NBITS) reliability, and offer high photoconductive gain. In order to address the photo-sensitivity of phototransistor for the incoming light, top transparent InZnO (IZO) gate was employed, which enables the independent gate control of dual gate photo-TFT without having any degradation of its photosensitivity. Considering optimum initial V T and NBITS reliability for the device operation, the top gate bias was judiciously chosen. In addition, the speed and noise performance of the photo-TFT is competitive with silicon photo-transistors, and more importantly, its superiority lies in optical transparency. © 2011 IEEE.

The self-organization growth of In0.32Ga0.68As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) superlattices is investigated by molecular beam epitaxy. It is found that high growth temperature and low growth rate are favorable for the formation of perfect vertically aligned QDs superlattices. The aspect ratio (height versus diameter) of QD increases from 0.16 to 0.23 with increase number of bi-layer. We propose that this shape change play a significant role to improve the uniformity of QDs superlattices. Features in the variable temperature photoluminescence characteristics indicate the high uniformity of the QDs. Strong infrared absorption in the 8-12 mum was observed. Our results suggest the promising applications of QDs in normal sensitive infrared photodetectors. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
