In this paper we present a data structure which improves the average complexity of the operations of updating and a certain type of retrieving information on an array. The data structure is devised from a particular family of digraphs verifying conditions so that they represent solutions for this problem.

In this paper a constructive method of data structures solving an array maintenance problem is offered. These data structures are defined in terms of a family of digraphs which have previously been defined, representing solutions for this problem. We present as well a prototype of the method in Haskell.

BRCA1 is a major breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility gene, with mutations in this gene predisposing women to a very high risk of developing breast and ovarian tumours. BRCA1 primarily functions to maintain genomic stability via critical roles in DNA repair, cell cycle checkpoint control, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis and mRNA splicing. As a result, BRCA1 mutations often result in defective DNA repair, genomic instability and sensitivity to DNA damaging agents. BRCA1 carries out these different functions through its ability to interact, and form complexes with, a vast array of proteins involved in multiple cellular processes, all of which are considered to contribute to its function as a tumour suppressor. This review discusses and highlights recent research into the functions of BRCA1-related protein complexes and their roles in maintaining genomic stability and tumour suppression.

The Towed Array electronics is a multi-channel simultaneous real time high speed data acquisition system. Since its assembly is highly manpower intensive, the costs of arrays are prohibitive and therefore any attempt to reduce the manufacturing, assembly, testing and maintenance costs is a welcome proposition. The Network Based Towed Array is an innovative concept and its implementation has remarkably simplified the fabrication, assembly and testing and revolutionised the Towed Array scenario. The focus of this paper is to give a good insight into the Reliability aspects of Network Based Towed Array. A case study of the comparison between the conventional array and the network based towed array is also dealt with

The assembly of sarcomeric proteins into the highly organized structure of the sarcomere is an ordered and complex process involving an array of structural and associated proteins. The sarcomere has shown itself to be considerably more complex than ever envisaged and may be considered one of the most complex macromolecular assemblies in biology. Studies over the last decade have helped to put a new face on the sarcomere, and, as such, the sarcomere is being redefined as a dynamic network of proteins capable of generating force and signalling with other cellular compartments and metabolic enzymes capable of controlling many facets of striated myocyte biology.

Nowadays, earth stations have as a common feature the use of large reflector antenna for downloading data from satellites. Large reflectors have impairments such as mechanical complexity, low flexibility and high cost. Thus, the feasibility of other antenna technologies must be evaluated, such as conformal adaptive antennas based on multiple planar active arrays. In the scenery under study, the capability to track several satellites simultaneously, higher flexibility, lower production and maintenance cost, modularity and a more efficient use of the spectrum; are the most important advantage to boost up active antenna arrays over large dishes.

The purpose of this study is to explore aspects of coral transplantation for restoration. Montastraea faveolata cores of 2.54 and 5.0 cm were stored in aquaria, on an array and on the substrate. Survival on the array and substrate were 100% for 12 and 11 months respectively. Branches of Acropora cervicornis had 75.0 % survival on the substrate and 91.7% on the array. Disease caused mortality for the A. cervicornis and the 2.54 cm cores in the aquaria but not for the 5.0 cm cores. Growth was significantly higher for A. cervicornis and A. palmata branches stored on an array than in an open seawater system. The storage type affected growth patterns of both species. M. faveolata fed three times/week increased in surface area significantly more than those fed once and twice/week. Corals fed once per week significantly increased their polyp density. Corals had intermittent respiration while under sub-aerial conditions.

Centromeres are essential chromosomal loci at which kinetochore formation occurs for spindle fiber attachment during mitosis and meiosis, guiding proper segregation of chromosomes. In humans, centromeres are located at large arrays of alpha satellite DNA, contributing to but not defining centromere function. The histone variant CENP-A assembles at alpha satellite DNA, epigenetically defining the centromere. CENP-A containing chromatin exists as an essential domain composed of blocks of CENP-A nucleosomes interspersed with blocks of H3 nucleosomes, and is surrounded by pericentromeric heterochromatin. In order to maintain genomic stability, the CENP-A domain is propagated epigenetically over each cell division; disruption of propagation is associated with chromosome instabilities such as aneuploidy, found in birth defects and in cancer.

The CENP-A chromatin domain occupies 30-45% of the alpha satellite array, varying in genomic distance according to the underlying array size. However, the molecular mechanisms that control assembly and organization of CENP-A chromatin within its genomic context remain unclear. The domain may shift, expand, or contract, as CENP-A is loaded and dispersed each cell cycle. We hypothesized that in order to maintain genome stability, the centromere is inherited as static chromatin domains, maintaining size and position within the pericentric heterochromatin. Utilizing stretched chromatin fibers, I found that CENP-A chromatin is limited to a sub-region of the alpha satellite array that is fixed in size and location through the cell cycle and across populations.

The average amount of CENP-A at human centromeres is largely consistent, implying that the variation in size of CENP-A domains reflects variations in the number of CENP-A subdomains and/or the density of CENP-A nucleosomes. Multi-color nascent protein labeling experiments were utilized to examine the distribution and incorporation of distinct pools of CENP-A over several cell cycles. I found that in each cell cycle there is independent CENP-A distribution, occurring equally between sister centromeres across all chromosomes, in similar quantities. Furthermore, centromere inheritance is achieved through specific placement of CENP-A, following an oscillating pattern that fixes the location and size of the CENP-A domain. These results suggest that spatial and temporal dynamics of CENP-A are important for maintaining centromere and genome stability.

The time for conducting Preventive Maintenance (PM) on an asset is often determined using a predefined alarm limit based on trends of a hazard function. In this paper, the authors propose using both hazard and reliability functions to improve the accuracy of the prediction particularly when the failure characteristic of the asset whole life is modelled using different failure distributions for the different stages of the life of the asset. The proposed method is validated using simulations and case studies.
