A novel method for preparing nano-supercapacitor arrays, in which each nano-supercapacitor consisted of electropolymerized Polypyrrole (PPy) electrode / porous TiO2 separator / chemical polymerized PPy electrode, was developed in this paper. The nano-supercapacitors were fabricated in the nano array pores of anodic aluminum oxide template using the bottom-up, layer-by-layer synthetic method. The nano-supercapacitor diameter was 80 nm, and length 500 nm. Based on the charge/discharge behavior of nano-supercapacitor arrays, it was found that the PPy/TiO2/PPy array supercapacitor devices performed typical electrochemical supercapacitor behavior. The method introduced here may find application in manufacturing nano-sized electrochemical power storage devices in the future for their use in the area of microelectronic devices and microelectromechanical systems.

In this paper, we developed a new kind of substrate, the silver-coated anodic aluminum oxide (AAO), to investigate the characters of surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) of the dilute single-walled carbon nanotubes. Homogeneous Ag-coated AAO substrate was obtained by decomposing the AgNO3 on the surface of AAO. single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were directly grown onto this substrate through floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition method (CVD). SERRS of SWNTs was carried out using several different wavelength lasers. The bands coming from metallic SWNTs were significantly enhanced. The two SERRS mechanisms, the "electromagnetic" and "chemical" mechanism, were mainly responsible for the experiment results. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have studied the experimental conditions needed to produce LaNiO3 (LNO) nanostructures using a template-assisted method. In this route, a mesoporous anodic aluminum oxide template was filled with a chemical solution that had been prepared with polymeric precursors route. The precursor solutions and synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM). The XRD results for the samples that were heat-treated at 700 degrees C revealed that these samples crystallize in a perovskite-like LaNiO3 structure. HRSEM images revealed that the samples prepared with different deposition times (0.5, 1 and 2 h) promoted the formation of LaNiO3 nanotubes with different wall thicknesses.

We report the catalyst-free synthesis of the arrays of core–shell, ultrathin, size-uniform SiC/AlSiC nanowires on the top of a periodic anodic aluminum oxide template. The nanowires were grown using an environmentally friendly, silane-free process by exposing the silicon supported porous alumina template to CH4 + H2 plasmas. High-resolution scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the nanowires have a single-crystalline core with a diameter of about 10 nm and a thin (1–2 nm) amorphous AlSiC shell. Because of their remarkable length, high aspect ratio, and very high surface area-to-volume ratio, these unique structures are promising for nanoelectronic and nanophotonic applications that require efficient electron emission, light scattering, etc. A mechanism for nanowire growth is proposed based upon the reduction of the alumina template to nanosized metallic aluminum droplets forming between nanopores. The subsequent incorporation of silicon and carbon atoms from the plasma leads to nucleation and growth from the top of the alumina template.

In this paper, we report the synthesis of barium zirconate, BaZrO3, (BZ) nanotubes fabricated by the modified sol-gel method within the nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. The morphology, structure, and composition of as prepared nanotubes were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction ( SAED), high resolution TEM (HRTEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The results of XRD and SAED indicated that postannealed (at 650 degrees C for 1 h) BZ nanotubes (BZNTs) exhibited a polycrystalline cubic perovskite crystal structure. SEM and TEM analysis revealed that BZNTs possessed a uniform length and diameter (similar to 200 nm) and the thickness of the wall of the BZNTs was about 20 nm. Y-junctions, multiple branching and typical T-junctions were also observed in some BZNTs. EDX analysis demonstrated that stoichiometric BaZrO3 was formed. HRTEM image confirmed that the obtained BZNTs were composed of nanoparticles in the range of 5-10 nm. The possible formation mechanism of BZNTs was discussed.

Ternary CoNiP nanowire (NW) arrays have been synthesized by electrochemical deposition inside the nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. The CoNiP NWs deposited at room temperature present soft magnetic properties, with both parallel and perpendicular coercivities less than 500 Oe. In contrast, as the electrolyte temperature (T-elc) increases from 323 to 343 K, the NWs exhibit hard magnetic properties with coercivities in the range of 1000-2500 Oe. This dramatic increase in coercivities can be attributed to the domain wall pinning that is related to the formation of Ni and Co nanocrystallites and the increase of P content. The parallel coercivity (i.e. the applied field perpendicular to the membrane surface) maximum as high as 2500 Oe with squareness ratio up to 0.8 is achieved at the electrolyte temperature of 328 K. It has been demonstrated that the parallel coercivity of CoNiP NWs can be tuned in a wide range of 200-2500 Oe by controlling the electrolyte temperature, providing an easy way to control magnetic properties and thereby for their integration with magnetic-micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). The monodisperse array and nanowires Of Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor were synthesized using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template by sol-gel method. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images indicated that Y2O3:Eu3+ nanowires are parallelly arranged, all of which are in uniform diameter of about 50 nm. The high-magnification SEM image showed that each nanowire is composed of a lot of agglutinating particles. The patterns of selected-area electron diffraction confirmed that Y2O3:EU3+ nanowires mainly consist of polycrystalline materials. Excitation and emission spectra Of Y2O3:E U3+/AAO composite films were measured. The characteristic red emission peak of EU3+ ion attributed to D-5(0)-->F-7(2) transition in Y2O3:EU3+/AAO nanowires broadened its halfwidth.

Natural bone is one kind of compounds consisting of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nano-rods, which are embedded in the template of collagen matrix in vivo with the same crystallographic organization. Herein HAp nano-rods precursors were synthesized via wet chemical method. Large-scale HAp nano-wires with the same crystallographic organization as the template of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) were obtained by the electrophoretic deposition and the technology of the template. It provides a meaningful method to study and understand the information of biological molecules' mineralization process.

High density, uniform GaN nanodot arrays with controllable size have been synthesized by using template-assisted selective growth. The GaN nanodots with average diameter 40nm, 80nm and 120nm were selectively grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on a nano-patterned SiO2/GaN template. The nanoporous SiO2 on GaN surface was created by inductively coupled plasma etching (ICP) using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template as a mask. This selective regrowth results in highly crystalline GaN nanodots confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The narrow size distribution and uniform spatial position of the nanoscale dots offer potential advantages over self-assembled dots grown by the Stranski–Krastanow mode.

In this thesis, anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes, which provide well-aligned uniform mesoscopic pores with adjustable pore parameters, were fabricated and successfully utilized as templates for the fabrication of functional organic nanowires, nanorods and the respective well-ordered arrays. The template-assisted patterning technique was successfully applied for the realization of different objectives:rnHigh-density and well-ordered arrays of hole-conducting nanorods composed of cross-linked triphenylamine (TPA) and tetraphenylbenzidine (TPD) derivatives on conductive substrates like ITO/glass have been successfully fabricated. By applying a freeze-drying technique to remove the aqueous medium after the wet-chemical etching of the template, aggregation and collapsing of the rods was prevented and macroscopic areas of perfectly freestanding nanorods were feasible. Based on the hole-conducting nanorod arrays and their subsequent embedding into an electron-conducting polymer matrix via spin-coating, a novel routine concept for the fabrication of well-ordered all-organic bulk heterojunction for organic photovoltaic applications was successfully demonstrated. The increased donor/acceptor interface of the fabricated devices resulted in a remarkable increase of the photoluminescence quenching compared to a planar bilayer morphology. Further, the fundamental working principle of the templating approach for the solution-based all-organic photovoltaic device was demonstrated for the first time.rnFurthermore, in order to broaden the applicability of patterned surfaces, which are feasible via the template-based patterning of functional materials, AAO with hierarchically branched pores were fabricated and utilized as templates. By pursuing the common templating process hierarchically polymeric replicas, which show remarkable similarities with interesting biostructures, like the surface of the lotus leaf and the feet of a gecko, were successfully prepared.rnIn contrast to the direct infiltration of organic functional materials, a novel route for the fabrication of functional nanowires via post-modification of reactive nanowires was established. Therefore, reactive nanowires based on cross-linked pentafluorophenylesters were fabricated by utilizing AAO templates. The post-modification with fluorescent dyes was demonstrated. Furthermore, reactive wires were converted into well-dispersed poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels, which exhibit a thermal-responsive reversible phase transition. The reversible thermal-responsible swelling of the PNIPAM nanowires exhibited a more than 50 % extended length than in the collapsed PNIPAM state. rnLast but not least, the shape-anisotropic pores of AAO were utilized to uniformly align the mesogens of a nematic liquid crystalline elastomer. Liquid crystalline nanowires with a narrow size distribution and uniform orientation of the liquid crystalline material were fabricated. It was shown that during the transition from the nematic to the isotropic phase the rod’s length shortened by roughly 40 percent. As such these liquid crystalline elastomeric nanowires may find application, as wire-shaped nanoactuators in various fields of research, like lab-on-chip systems, micro fluidics and biomimetics.rn

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of ferroelectric bismuth vanadate (Bi2VO5.5) (BVO) nanotubes within the nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates via sol-gel method. The as-prepared BVO nanotubes were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM) and the stoichiometry of the nanotubes was established by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Postannealed (675 degrees C for 1 h), BVO nanotubes were a polycrystalline and the XRD studies confirmed the crystal structure to be orthorhombic. The uniformity in diameter and length of the nanotubes as reveled by the TEM and SEM suggested that these were influenced to a guest extent by the thickness and pore diameter of the nanoporous AAO template. EDX analysis demonstrated the formation of stoichiometric Bi2VO5.5 phase. HRTEM confirmed that the obtained BVO nanotubes were made up of nanoparticles of 5-9 nm range. The possible formation mechanism of nanotubes was elucidated.

A capillary-enforced template-based method has been applied to fabricate Pb(0.76)Ca(0.24)TiO(3) (PCT24) nanotubes via filling PCT24 precursor solution, prepared by modified sol-gel method, into nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide templates. The morphology and structure of as-prepared PCT24 were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction techniques. The obtained PCT24 nanotubes with diameter of similar to 200 nm and wall thickness of similar to 20 nm exhibited a tetragonal perovskite structure. High resolution TEM (HRTEM) analysis confirmed that as-obtained PCT24 nanotubes made up of nanoparticles (5-8 nm) which were randomly aligned in the nanotubes. Formation of some solid crystalline PCT24 nanorods, Y-junctions and multi-branches were observed. Interconnections in the pores of template are responsible for the growth of Y-junctions and multi-branches. The possible formation mechanism of PCT24 nanotubes/nanorods was discussed. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops of PCT24 nanotube arrays were measured, showing a room temperature ferroelectric characteristic of as-prepared PCT24 nanotubes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. In this article, we report the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of injection-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with 40 wt % ceramic filler [hydroxyapatite (HA) and/or Al2O3] and 2 wt % titanate as a coupling agent. The mechanical property measurements revealed that a combination of a maximum tensile strength of 18.7 MPa and a maximum tensile modulus of about 855 MPa could be achieved with the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. For the same composite composition, the maximum compression strength was determined to be 71.6 MPa and the compression modulus was about 660 MPa. The fractrography study revealed the uniform distribution of ceramic fillers in the semicrystalline HDPE matrix. The cytocompatibility study with osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells confirmed extensive cell adhesion and proliferation on the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. The cell viability analysis with the 3(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay revealed a statistically significant difference between the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites and sintered HA for various culture durations of upto 7 days. The difference in cytocompatibility properties among the biocomposites is explained in terms of the difference in the protein absorption behavior. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
