Co-doped alumina powders were synthesized by means of the polymeric precursor method to obtain ceramic pigments. The effect of different contents of Co2+ on phase transition gamma to alpha-Al2O3 and appearing of CoAl2O4 spinel were studied by means of X-ray diffraction. A partial phase diagram of the system CoAl2O3 was proposed from these data by means of determination of the percentages of these phases according to the calcining temperature. Critical particle size to phase transition was determined by means of calculations of crystallite size and determination of superficial area through the BET method. UV-vis spectroscopy of the samples allow to compare the band shift with the phase transition. Besides, a study of thermal stability and intensity of the blue coloration of the synthesized powders with the presence of cobalt in relation to the calcining temperature was accomplished and compared to the phase transition. The results show that the higher blue color intensity was obtained for the powders with Co-doped gamma-Al2O3 closest of phase transition to alpha-Al2O3 + CoAl2O4. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. In this work the La1.8Eu0.2O3 coating on nanometric alpha-alumina, alpha-Al2O3@La1.8Eu0.2O3, was prepared for the first time by a soft chemical method. The powder was heat-treated at 100, 400, 800 and 1200 degrees C for 2 h. X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), emission and excitation spectra, as well as Eu3+, lifetime were used to characterize the material and to follow the changes in structure as the heating temperature increases. The Eu3+ luminescence data revealed the characteristic transitions D-5(0) --> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1 and 3) of Eu3+ at around 580, 591 and 613 nm, respectively, when the powders were excited by 393 nm. The red color of the samples changed to yellow when the powder was annealed at 1200 degrees C. The decrease in the (D-5(0) --> F-7(2))/(D-5(0) --> F-7(1)) ratio from around 5.0 for samples heated at lower temperatures to 3.1 for samples annealed at 1200 degrees C is consistent with a higher symmetry of the Eu3+ at higher temperature. The excitation spectra of the samples also confirms this change by the presence of a more intense and broad band at around 317 nm, instead of the presence of the characteristic peak at 393 mn, which corresponds to the F-7(0) --> L-5(6) transition of the Eu3+. The lifetimes of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ for the samples heat-treated at 100, 400, 800 and 1200 degrees C was evaluated as 0.57, 0.72, 0.43 and 0.31 ms, respectively. The adsorption of As(V) onto alpha -Al2O3 was investigated at 25, 50 and 70 degreesC using batch adsorption experiments. Results indicate that As is strongly adsorbed at low pH and gets progressively released to the fluid with increasing pH above 7. At any pH, increasing temperature favors aqueous species of As over surface species. Surface complexation constants were determined at the experimental temperatures by fitting the adsorption data. Adsorption reactions were then converted to semi-isocolumbic reactions, i.e, reactions with balanced like-charged aqueous species. Intrinsic adsorption constants of semi-isocolumbic reactions change linearly when plotted against inverse temperature, suggesting that the heat capacity of these reactions remains constant over the temperature range considered. This permitted thermodynamic parameters of intrinsic surface complexation constants to be determined. Changes in surface complexation constants result in a change in the surface speciation with increasing temperature. This change is similar to the one observed for aqueous species, i.e. increasing temperature favors less negatively charged species below a pH of 9 and more negatively charged species above a pH of 10. Comparison with the stability of As surface complexes with Fe suggests that surface complexes with Al are more stable. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanocrystalline Al(2)O(3)powders have been synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. A study of the evolution of crystalline phases of obtained powders was accomplished through X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and refinement of the structures through the Rietveld method. The results obtained allow the identification of three steps on the gamma-Al2O3 to alpha-Al2O3 phase transition. The single-phase alpha-Al2O3 Powder was obtained after heat-treatment at 1050 degrees C for 2 h. A study of the morphology of the particles was accomplished through measures of crystallite size, specific surface area and transmission electronic microscopy. The particle size is closely related to gamma-Al2O3 to alpha-Al2O3 phase transition. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work the growth and the magnetic properties of the transition metals molybdenum, niobium, and iron and of the highly-magnetostrictive C15 Laves phases of the RFe2 compounds (R: Rare earth metals: here Tb, Dy, and Tb{0.3}Dy{0.7} deposited on alpha-Al2O3 (sapphire) substrates are analyzed. Next to (11-20) (a-plane) oriented sapphire substrates mainly (10-10) (m-plane) oriented substrates were used. These show a pronounced facetting after high temperature annealing in air. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements reveal a dependence of the height, width, and angle of the facets with the annealing temperature. The observed deviations of the facet angles with respect to the theoretical values of the sapphire (10-1-2) and (10-11) surfaces are explained by cross section high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) measurements. These show the plain formation of the (10-11) surface while the second, energy reduced (10-1-2) facet has a curved shape given by atomic steps of (10-1-2) layers and is formed completely solely at the facet ridges and valleys. Thin films of Mo and Nb, respectively, deposited by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) reveal a non-twinned, (211)-oriented epitaxial growth as well on non-faceted as on faceted sapphire m-plane, as was shown by X-Ray and TEM evaluations. In the case of faceted sapphire the two bcc crystals overgrow the facets homogeneously. Here, the bcc (111) surface is nearly parallel to the sapphire (10-11) facet and the Mo/Nb (100) surface is nearly parallel to the sapphire (10-1-2) surface. (211)-oriented Nb templates on sapphire m-plane can be used for the non-twinned, (211)-oriented growth of RFe2 films by means of MBE. Again, the quality of the RFe2 films grown on faceted sapphire is almost equal to films on the non-faceted substrate. For comparison thin RFe2 films of the established (110) and (111) orientation were prepared. Magnetic and magnetoelastic measurements performed in a self designed setup reveal a high quality of the samples. No difference between samples with undulated and flat morphology can be observed. In addition to the preparation of covering, undulating thin films on faceted sapphire m-plane nanoscopic structures of Nb and Fe were prepared by shallow incidence MBE. The formation of the nanostructures can be explained by a shadowing of the atomic beam due to the facets in addition to de-wetting effects of the metals on the heated sapphire surface. Accordingly, the nanostructures form at the facet ridges and overgrow them. The morphology of the structures can be varied by deposition conditions as was shown for Fe. The shape of the structures vary from pearl-necklet strung spherical nanodots with a diameter of a few 10 nm to oval nanodots of a few 100 nm length to continuous nanowires. Magnetization measurements reveal uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis of magnetization parallel to the facet ridges. The shape of the hysteresis is depending on the morphology of the structures. The magnetization reversal processes of the spherical and oval nanodots were simulated by micromagnetic modelling and can be explained by the formation of magnetic vortices.

The evolution of internal stresses in oxide scales growing on polycrystalline Fe(3)Al alloy in atmospheric air at 700 degrees C was determined using in situ energy-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Ex situ texture analyses were performed after 5 h of oxidation at 700 degrees C. Under these conditions, the oxide-scale thickness, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, lies between 80 and 100 nm. The main phase present in the oxide scales is alpha-Al(2)O(3), with minor quantities of metastable theta-Al(2)O(3) detected in the first minutes of oxidation, as well as alpha-Fe(2)O(3). alpha-Al(2)O(3) grows with a weak (0001) fiber texture in the normal direction. During the initial stages of oxidation the scale develops, increasing levels of compressive stresses which later evolve to a steady state condition situated around -300 MPa. Neodymium doped and undoped aluminum oxide samples were obtained using two different techniques: Pechini and sol-gel. Fine grained powders were produced using both procedures, which were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermo-Stimulated Luminescence (TSL). Results showed that neodymium ions incorporation is responsible for the creation of two new TSL peaks (125 and 265 degrees C) and, also, for the enhancement of the intrinsic TSL peak at 190 degrees C. An explanation was proposed for these observations. SEM gave the dimensions of the clusters produced by each method, showing that those obtained by Pechini are smaller than the ones produced by sol-gel; it can also explain the higher emission supplied by the first one. Catalytic activities and deactivation characteristics of oxides-supported nickel catalysts for the reaction of methane reforming with carbon dioxide were investigated. The dynamic carbon deposition on various nickel catalysts was also studied by a thermogravimetric method. Among the catalysts prepared, Ni/La2O3, Ni/alpha-Al2O3, Ni/SiO2, and Ni/CeO2 showed very high CH4 and CO2 conversions and moderate deactivation whereas Ni/MgO and Ni/TiO2 had lower conversions when the Ni reduction was conducted at 500 degrees C. When Ni/MgO catalyst was reduced at 800 degrees C, it exhibited not only comparable conversions of CH4 and CO2 with other active catalysts but also much longer period of stability without deactivation. The amount of carbon deposited in Ni-based catalysts varied depending on the nature of support and followed the order of Ni/La2O3 > Ni/alpha-Al2O3 > Ni/SiO2 > Ni/MgO > Ni/CeO2 at 700 degrees C. The carbons formed on the catalyst surface showed different structural and chemical properties, and these in turn affected the catalytic activity of the catalysts.

Oxygen vacancies in metal oxides are known to determine their chemistry and physics. The properties of neutral oxygen vacancies in metal oxides of increasing complexity (MgO, CaO, alpha-Al2O3, and ZnO) have been studied using density functional theory. Vacancy formation energies, vacancy-vacancy interaction, and the barriers for vacancy migration are determined and rationalized in terms of the ionicity, the Madelung potential, and lattice relaxation. It is found that the Madelung potential controls the oxygen vacancy properties of highly ionic oxides whereas a more complex picture arises for covalent ZnO.
